What do these numbers mean? There seems to be quite a bit of numbers in the top batch of figures there. I'm confused the first number mean the figures of the last week. The final is the total sales according soundscan.

i don't understand how you get the numbers of the other post you made below (the "since death" figures)

especially, History is always behind Invincible in the USA each week in the comprehensive billboard chart. How do you have it before Invincible in your chart ? Thanks...

The soundscan totals explain the sales for the week and the last number is the cumulative total. In the case of 'Dangerous' the sales only reflect the SE edition of Dangerous, if you combine what the original 'Dangerous's scanned which was 5,785,000 plus the SE edition of 451,262 scanned you get total copies scanned 6,236,262 copies total from November 1991 to September 6, 2009. The rest of the albums listed are the total copies scanned in the Soundscan era which begin in May 1991 for example we know that Thriller sold more than 24 million copies in the USA before the Soundscan era, since May 1991 the original version of Thriller plus the SE version released in 2001 combined with Thriller 25 released in 2008 and you have the total of 5,454,483 copies scanned in total. I hope this long explanation helps.

Yep thanks for the explanation, seems odd though that only SE of Dangerous is shown as Dangerous and all sales were after Soundscan had started!?

His question was : why dangerous is considered at 8 M sold in USA while soundscan has it at 6,2 M only...

The answer is that Soundscan didnt' give in the early 90's the real sales.

It was 20 % off !

Add 20 % of 6 M to the 6,2 M and you get 7,4 M

Dangerous is already certified 7 M in USA.

Next year it could be certified at 8 M

Since his death Michael Jackson had #1 album for total 113-weeks in 21-countries.
This is without the Belgium Charts.,In Belgium they have two charts. And in there MJ had #1 album for 12-weeks in Wallonia & Flanders.
Also in Japan he had #2 album for 3-consecutive weeks. If there is a chart for foreign artists he would have #1 album there too.

Jackson sales 'will top 2 million in UK by the end of the year.'

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a179447/jackson-sales-will-top-2-million-in-year.html

Michael Jackson's UK album sales in the run-up to Christmas are expected to top two million after record label Sony announced plans to release new LP This Is It.

Music retailers are reportedly expecting the album to become one of the biggest selling records of the season and believe it will renew interest in Jackson's back catalogue, according to Music Week.

"It will do phenomenally well," Play.com category manager for music Helen Marquis said. "His albums are still selling strongly, but having a new piece in the mix could have a phenomenal effect and it could reignite the catalogue."

HMV head of music Rudy Osorio added: "If you consider that hundreds of thousands of fans bought tickets to Michael's O2 shows and if you take into account the incredible lift in sales of Michael albums since his death, then you have to imagine this new release has a huge potential audience - one that could make it one of the biggest-selling albums of the Christmas period."

Jackson has so far shifted 1.55 million albums since he passed away in June. His biggest seller is The Essential, which accounts for 515,000 units sold.

Over 1.2 million Jackson singles have also been sold following his death, with 'Man In The Mirror' notching up 200,000 downloads.

Sony recently confirmed that new single 'This Is It' will be released on October 12. The album follows two weeks later and coincides with the release of the movie of the same name, which follows the late singer preparing for his planned 50-date London residency.

For the first time since his death, Michael Jackson does not have an album in the UK Top 40.

The Essential slips down from 38 to 53, Bad from 49 to 57, and Thriller from 58 t0 67.

53. (38) THE ESSENTIAL (Michael Jackson) 27 wks
57. (49) BAD (Michael Jackson) 138 wks
67. (58) THRILLER (Michael Jackson) 218 wks

The This Is It album very briefly peaked at No.1 on the amazon.co.uk music chart but has since fallen down sharply to No.33. At the rate this album has sold, I don't expect it to be a No.1 album

That's odd. I just checked and it's down to #60 now in the UK. In the US on the other hand the album remains firmly cemented in the Top 10, currently at #7. In Canada the album is doing even better at #4. Why is there such a huge difference?

Its not odd, in most countries the Essential is starting to drop out of the top 50. don't know where you are checking your chart places because in Canada the only albums left in top 100 are Number Ones at #53 and Thriller 25 at #100. in US Essential is #7 but only on Catalog chart. I'm sure in Comprehensive chart probably not still in top 100.

I was talking about the Amazon sales positions of This Is It The Soundtrack. I know in the music charts, Jackson's albums have fallen off the charts for the most part. They are doing better in the US.

I believe that is the 4th biggest sales for an album worldwide this year behind U2 (No Line On The Horizon), Eminem (relapse), and Arashi (All The Best).
not bad for another greatest hits album when MJ had already sold in excess of 6million hits album since June!

Also, Madonna's 'Celebration' album had a biggest week of only 323,000. LOL :)

From UKMIX:

I'll update this if and when actual sales numbers leak, but for now here's the rounded/estimated sales version…

WEEK 45

albums selling over 1,000,000 - this year - 15 / last year - 17
albums selling over 500,000 - this year - 44 / last year - 58
albums selling over 250,000 - this year - 111 / last year - 131

Taylor Swift's Fearless returns to the top of the YTD chart. It was the YTD top seller for the first 33 weeks of the year, until overtaken by Michael Jackson's Number Ones back in August.

In the top half of this week's list… Jay-Z's The Blueprint moves up another place to #7, Miley Cyrus' EP Time Of Our Lives moves up 2 to #26, and Michael Buble's Crazy Love moves up 4 to #36. Jumping 30 places to #34, who else but Michael Jackson with This Is It.

New at #1 on the BB200 this week is Carrie Underwood with Play On, which sold 317,695, enough to be the one and only debut on this list at #79. The second highest debut on the BB200 this week is Andrea Bocelli's holiday album My Christmas which will join this list next week, and is currently forecast to climb to the #1 place on the BB200.

Knocking on the door… former BB200 chart topper Reba's Keep On Loving You is the unlucky #101 on this week's list, just a couple of hundred sales behind Charlie Wilson. If she sells above 7,000 next week, she'll get a week inside the YTD top 100. Albums from Breaking Benjamin [(Dear Agony)] #106 on sales of 258,000 and Owl City [(Ocean Eyes)] #114 on sales of 240,000 should also make the list in the next couple of weeks or so.

Key: Albums in blue are 2009 releases, albums in green are catalog. (RED is MJ!)

TII 2,305,956

Dan 1,455,404
OTW 1,423,203
INV 796,874
His 732,455

Total Since 25/06 = 20,812,363

Jan-June = 600,000 (minimum)

Grand Total = 21,412,363 (minimum)

There are some MJ solo album sales missing from these figures (BOTD, 18 Greatest Hits, Ben, etc.), where I have not been able to gather enough information, but these will only be a small percentage in comparision to the overall total.

A lot of the abve figures will be based on sales in the 'Major' countries (US, UK, Ger, Japan, France, Canada, Netherlands, etc.) with an additional 10% 'average' added for missing countries. This very often underestimates MJ's sales - as he sales well above the 'average' in most foreign territories - so the above figures can be taken as 'minimum' totals.

Some crappy news in the Australian charts. This Is It has dropped 11 places this week to number 22. It was in the top 11 for its first 10 weeks in the charts which is awesome. The album has been certified platinum which means its sold over 70,000.

His DVD's are doing amazing as always. Number One's is still number 9. It's been in the charts for 183 weeks. It's 19 times platinum. While Bucharest is at number 14. 10 times platinum. All his DVD's have hit platinum in Australia.

In 2009:

MJ sold 29 million albums globally (statistic verified by Hits Daily Double). This includes Jackson 5/Jacksons/Motown/Epic albums and singles. He sold over 8.3 million albums in the US alone last year.

In addition to this never before achieved feat, Jackson also scored a #1 hit at the Box Office around the world including the US, UK, Japan, Australia, and Canada. Approximately $260 million was earned at the theaters through This Is It, making it the highest grossing documentary ever.

Already in 2010, Jackson has sold over 1 million albums globally; 400,000 of that in the US. His THIS IS IT movie has been released to DVD and Blu-Ray and surged to #1 in both the US, Canada, and Japan. TII will be released in Australia & New Zealand on March 3rd. It comes to Denmark, Italy, & Spain on Feb 23rd, Germany on the 25th of Feb. France will get it on March 1st, while the UK will see it on shelves on the 22nd of Feb.

As the Billboard 200 chart demonstrates, Michael Jackson's Number Ones album is at #122 on the chart. The album contains all of Jackson's top hits, and includes such fan favorites as "Billy Jean," Thriller," "Smooth Criminal," and many others. Jackson's current single, "Hollywood Tonight" was recently at #1 on the Billboard Dance chart, and fans around the world continue to purchase and listen to Jackson's music because it resonates with so many people.

Billboard - Chart Beat

Michael Jackson, King of Pop Charts, Remembered
by Gary Trust | August 29, 2011 2:05 EDT

Michael Jackson's 53rd birthday.

While the King of Pop passed June 25, 2009, his legacy lives on. Here is a look at the astounding dominance that Jackson exhibited on Billboard surveys.

WANNA BE STARTIN' SOMETHIN': Jackson was on his way to chart royalty right from the debut of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Nov. 15, 1969, when Jackson was 11 years old.

The act would become the first to send its first four entries to the Hot 100's summit:

"I Want You Back," Jan. 31, 1970 (one week at No. 1)
"ABC," April 25, 1970 (two weeks at No. 1)
"The Love You Save," June 27, 1970 (two weeks at No. 1)
"I'll Be There," Oct. 17, 1970 (five weeks at No. 1)

The Jackson 5 remains the only group to start so strongly. Since the act's launch, only Mariah Carey - who in 1992 reigned with her cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" - matched (and bested) the feat, when her first five singles topped the Hot 100 in 1990-91.

THRILLER: Jackson stands as the male artist with the most No. 1s in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. How synonymous have Jackson and the Hot 100 been? They were linked practically from the start. The first Hot 100 was dated Aug. 4, 1958. Jackson was born 25 days later.

Among all artists, only the Beatles (20 No. 1s) and Carey (18) have notched more leaders than Jackson. Below is a look at the male artists with the most Hot 100 No. 1s:

13, Michael Jackson
10, Stevie Wonder
9, Elton John
9, Paul McCartney
9, Usher
8, George Michael

Jackson's last leader to date became the first song ever to enter the Hot 100 at No. 1. The R. Kelly-written and co-produced "You Are Not Alone" bowed at the summit Sept. 2, 1995.

DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH: "Thriller" remains the album by a single artist with the most weeks at No. 1 (37, 1983-84) in the 55-year history of the Billboard 200. Only the "West Side Story" soundtrack reigned longer (54 weeks, 1962-63).

Here is a recap of the albums to lead the Billboard 200 the longest:

54 weeks, "West Side Story" soundtrack
37 weeks, "Thriller," Michael Jackson
31 weeks, "Calypso," Harry Belafonte
31 weeks, "Rumours," Fleetwood Mac
31 weeks, "South Pacific" soundtrack

JUST CAN'T STOP LOVIN' YOU: "Thriller" also became the first album to send seven songs into the Hot 100's top 10. Here are their peak positions and dates on the Hot 100:

No. 2, "The Girl Is Mine" (Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney), Jan. 8, 1983
No. 1 (seven weeks), "Billie Jean," March 5, 1983
No. 1 (three weeks), "Beat It," April 30, 1983
No. 5, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," July 16, 1983
No. 7, "Human Nature," Sept. 17, 1983
No. 10, "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)," Nov. 26, 1983
No. 4, "Thriller," March 3, 1984

Only two other artists have subsequently accomplished the feat. Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." produced seven top 10s in 1984-86, as did Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation 1814" in 1989-91. (She would've likely had an eighth, as "State of the World" reached No. 5 on Hot 100 Airplay in April 1991. Because it was not a commercially-available single, however, it was not allowed to appear on the Hot 100, per chart rules at the time).

Michael Jackson narrowly missed repeating tallying seven top 10s from an album with "Bad," the follow-up to "Thriller." Six of the set's seven singles reached the top 10; sixth single "Another Part of Me" peaked at No. 11.

NOT 'BAD': "Bad" did, however, become the first album in the Hot 100's history to produce five No. 1s:

"I Just Can't Stop Loving You" (with Siedah Garrett) (one week), Sept. 19, 1987
"Bad" (two weeks), Oct. 24, 1987
"The Way You Make Me Feel" (one week), Jan. 23, 1988
"Man in the Mirror" (two weeks), March 26, 1988
"Dirty Diana" (one week), July 2, 1988

Jackson stood alone with his fivefold record until two weeks ago, when Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" became the fifth Hot 100 leader from "Teenage Dream." Still, Jackson is the only male artist to manage the achievement.

ROCK WITH YOU: In addition to his command of the Billboard Hot 100 (48 total entries), R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Adult Contemporary and Dance/Club Play Songs, Jackson even crossed three songs over to Billboard's Album Rock chart at the height of "Thriller" hysteria.

Buoyed by Eddie Van Halen's guitar work, "Beat It" rose the highest, to No. 14, in 1983.

ANOTHER PART OF ME: "You Rock My World" spent a week at its peak of No. 10 on the Hot 100 the week of Sept. 22, 2001. While it stands as his sole top 10 on the chart in the '00s, it provided yet more evidence of Jackson's elite status on the Billboard post-Y2K.

With the song's rise to the top 10, Jackson became the only solo artist to post top 10 titles on the Hot 100 in each of the '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s (and that's not including the 17-8 rise of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on the last Hot 100 of the '60s, dated Dec. 27, 1969).

ONE MORE CHANCE: Even in 2011, Jackson has continued to set Billboard chart records.

"Hold My Hand," featuring Akon, the first radio single from Jackson's posthumous album "Michael," soared 65-39 on the Jan. 1, 2011, Hot 100. The surge granted Jackson the longest span of top 40 hits in the Hot 100's history. At 39 years and two months, Jackson passed the 38-year, one-month span of top 40 placements logged by Santana.

Jackson first reached the top 40 as a solo act the week of Nov. 6, 1971, when "Got to Be There" rocketed 50 spots to No. 39. (He had already banked seven top 40 titles with the Jackson 5 by then).

"Hold My Hand" became Jackson's 38th top 40 entry on the Hot 100. Dating to his first week in the top 40, only four acts boast more such titles: Elton John (55), Lil Wayne (49), Madonna (48) and the "Glee" cast (46).

I would have been puzzled if that remix "best of" under the alias "Cirque du Soleil" charted higher. As expected it's a flop...
