Does anyone have any up-to-date Soundscan for Michael's albums and singles (including digital downloads), in the USA?
Has the special edition of 'Thriller' topped the 1 million yet? It must be getting close :D

Hey guys - Here's an updated chart trajectory of the Number Ones album in the UK.
The album has spent 116 weeks in their Top 200 album chart so far!
I would think it surely must have surpassed 1.5 million in hard sales by now.

Some additional notes not available on Billboard's site: During the last week in October, Thriller soared up some 62% and increased from rank #21 to #6, marking the most substantial increase in ringtone sales that week with some 4,500 units purchased.
Just felt like posting this, especially with all of this recent discussion about Thriller...

UK
In THE most anticipated chart of all time, VH1 has teamed up with The Official UK Charts Company to release a definitive list of the Top 100 Best Selling Albums ever. This chart is not another poll voted for by the critics or viewers of a TV programme; it is a chart made up of actual sales figures from the last fifty years, unveiling who really has had the best selling album of all time; a fact that has never been revealed before, until now on VH1’s ‘Nation’s Favourite Album.’ VH1’s ‘Nation’s Favourite Album’ which transmits 18th November on VH1 at 6pm, reveals that legendary rockers Queen have outsold all other artists to claim the coveted title of the UK’s favourite album with their Greatest Hits compilation selling a staggering 5,407,587. The Beatles are in second place with ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.’ Cementing their place in music history, third place goes to Oasis, with ‘What’s The Story Morning Glory’: Top Ten Top Selling Albums of All Time:
Queen – Greatest Hits - 5,407,587
Beatles – Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band - 4,803,292
Oasis – What’s The Story Morning Glory - 4,304,504
Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms - 3,946,931
ABBA – Gold Greatest Hits – 3,932,316
Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of The Moon – 3,759,958
Queen – Greatest Hits II – 3,631,321
Michael Jackson – Thriller – 3,570,250
Michael Jackson – Bad – 3,549,950
Madonna – The Immaculate Collection – 3,364,785
The VH1 extravaganza hosted by Alex James, will make for compulsive viewing as he counts down the chart uncovering data that has never been revealed to the public, record companies and more importantly the artists themselves. A team of researchers from The Official UK Charts Company have worked tirelessly for over six months, trawling through hand written till receipts from the 1950’s to the most current sales figures, to announce information that will send shock waves through the music industry.
Astonishingly music luminaries such as Rolling Stones, Sting, The Sex Pistols and Bob Dylan do not have a single album in the top 100 and have been pipped to the post by artists such as Jason Donovan and Robson & Jerome.
Relative newcomers David Gray and James Blunt have pushed some of the biggest names of all time out of the Top 100, proving that music from every decade still has an incredible impact whether it is from contemporary artists such as Coldplay or old school musicians such as Simon & Garfunkel.
Heart-throb Robbie Williams walks away with the accolade of having the most album entries in the Top 100 with six, followed by Brit pop legends Oasis, Michael Jackson and Canadian warbler Celine Dion each with three album entries.
Highlighting the current trend of re-invention; the soundtracks from Dirty Dancing and The Sound of Music come in at number 36 and 37 respectively.
VH1’s ‘Nation’s Favourite Album’ on the 18th November at 6pm will be presented by Alex James and will be shown as a continuous five hour countdown. These sought after facts and figures will be interspersed with a plethora of interviews from leading figures from the music and entertainment industries. The ‘Nation’s Favourite Album’ countdown will be followed on November 20th by 10x60 hour spin-off shows.

'THRILLING' NUMBERS
Greetings Keith,
My local TV affiliate here in Las Vegas broadcasted the World Music Awards this last weekend. Apparently it took place in 2006, but wasn't shown on television until now.
Anyway, at one point, Michael Jackson was presented an award for "Thriller" being the best seller of all time at 104,000,000 units worldwide.
Question one would be: Can this number even be calculated without more than a few assumptions? But question number two can be answered: How well has "Thriller" done in the U.S. during the Nielsen SoundScan era (1991-present)?
Charles Novak
Las Vegas
Hi Charles,
The producers of the World Music Awards likely contacted SonyBMG and queried them on how many copies "Thriller" had shipped to retailers, worldwide, since its release. We have no way of verifying that number.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, "Thriller" has only sold 2.5 million copies in the U.S. since 1991.
That number may seem small, and it kinda is. But in the early '80s, "Thriller" was a monster hit. It clearly sold the vast majority of its overall figure during the early to mid-'80s.
"Thriller," released in 1982, was an absolute smash. It spent 37 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart -- the most for any pop album (only the soundtrack to "West Side Story" spent longer at No. 1, for 54 weeks).
"Thriller" was certified in 1984 as having shipped 20 million copies in the U.S. It has since had its certification total in America upped to 27 million (April, 2005).

Wow, this is something I mean normally artists don't have catalog albums doing this well in the top 40 no less except when they have a new product out. I hope that 'Number Ones' ultimately join the 2 mil plus mark to match the success of 'Dangerous' 'Bad' and 'Thriller' in all time sales in the UK.

Hahahahaha Number Ones has sold about as much in the UK as it has in the US.....which is funny considering that the US is like a third of the world music market (as well as a third of MJ's market) and Britain is around 7%......the British just cannot get enough of the King of Pop.

Ok fellow MJ statisticians, (I know I can't be the only one who plans on throwing a party the day "BAd" is finally certified 9x platinum, after 13 yrs of waiting!) has anyone else gone over these numbers in comparison to other Soundscan totals we've received in recent years? They seem a little odd to me, something doesn't add.
For example, the Soundscan totals for "BAd" as of May 2005 were 816,190 (original cd) and 194,245 (special edition cd). That combines for about 1,010,000 copies of the "BAd" album sold in the Soundscan era, AS OF 2 YRS AGO. Now, two years later, going by the above info, that total has jumped to 1,253,000! Now, I would love to believe "BAd" has sold about 243,000 copies in the U.S. in the last two years, but as anyone who keeps track of this stuff, that seems extremely unbelievable --- "BAd" routinely sells only about 15,000 copies each year here in the U.S. (e.g. it sold 14,570 in 2005; 17,645 in 2004)...
As you see, I'm just taking the grand totals released by Soundscan in recent years (May 2005 to be specific) and comparing it against this recent one of April 2007. Something doesn't add up... You can do the same for "Off The Wall" -- 375,000 copies have sold in the 2 yr period between May 2005 and now?? (even though it routinely moves about 40,000 copies each year in the 00's) ... And "Dangerous" -- 152,000 copies have sold in the 2 yr period between May 2005 and now?? (even though it routinely moves about 15,000 copies each year in the 00's).
:wtf2
Impossible. It also doesn't make sense given what we know in week to week sales.
  So I wonder, did Soundscan revise its numbers recently? Where did all these sales come from?? I believe in wishful thinking, but there's no way sales of these albums have skyrocketed tenfold in the past two years because we're able to watch their week to week totals and know better than that (not to mention the fact we're in between MJ eras and things are super slow). So are those April 07 numbers accurate? Has Soundscan discovered an enormous amount of sales it somehow missed or overlooked?
As of May 11th, 2005, Michael Jackson's USA SoundScan sales for SoundScan era (1991-onwards) Epic/Sony Music albums are as follows:
1. Dangerous (Original): 5.784 million
2. HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (2-CD): 2.532 million
3. Invincible: 2.084 million
4. Thriller (Original): 1.545 million
5. Off the Wall (Original): 1.169 million
6. Number Ones: 894,400
7. Greatest Hits: HIStory Vol. 1: 820,360
8. Bad (Original CD): 816,190
9. Thriller (Special Edition): 799,635
10. Blood on the Dance Floor: 273,730
11. Off the Wall (Special Edition): 240,200
12. Bad (Special Edition): 194,245
13. Dangerous (Special Edition): 115,100 [/i][/b]
First and most importantly the soundscan figures listed are accurate. After Michael’s acquittal in June 2005 his catalogue sales jumped big time, search this thread and you’ll find it. We are fans of Michael Jackson but wouldn’t stoop to lying and making up false sales figures. It appears you have gotten confused by the Special Edition totals being added into the final tally. BAD stands at 1.035 million as of April 2007 not the 1,235,000 you came up with. I think you added the 1.035 million to the deluxe in parenthesis because maybe it was confusing the way it was listed, if you had read it carefully I stated the original and deluxe had already been added together. The deluxe figures on the side were to show the amount of copies sold since 2001. I hope this clears of any confusion you have. Here is a better way of explaining it and hopefully when you add again you’ll see I haven’t posted over the top figures. Also where indicated I included more recent sales than listed in this thread:
May 2005
1. Dangerous (Original): 5.784 million
2. HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (2-CD): 2.532 million
3. Invincible: 2.084 million
4. Thriller (Original): 1.545 million
5. Off the Wall (Original): 1.169 million

Sort of a throw in post, but most of the MJ albums I have are the special edition versions.
Off the Wall - S.E.
Thriller - Original and S.E
Bad - S.E.
Dangerous - Original cassette tape, original album and S.E. album
My aunts and other family members [i.e. old folks] are the ones that had the originals, so I stole it from the them and added it to my collection. lol

This discussion confuses me. The Guinness Book of Records states that Thriller has sold 104 copies. As far as I know Guiness checks their records very carefully. Why should they not be trusted?

the 104 million include single sales + video sales. The singles sold maybe between 15 and 25 million together and the thriller video I DUNNO. I heard somewhere it shiould hav sold 20+ million copies worldwide, but i dunno. thats the only possible explanation of the 104 million

on the guinnes certificate stands not copies but SALES. And if guinnes talks about sales then it includes singles + videos of the SINGLES. If thers for example a WHOLE DVD of alll clips on that album then its counted seperatly.
Thats what i know. It can be false but its the only possible way to explain the ultra huge 104 million.
You know in the early 90's it was said it had sold 45 - 50 million copies. So sinc e then it has sold 3 million in the US alone. So that could be not more then 9 million worldwide. And not the 42 million u need to hit the 104 mark.

Vintage AC/DC, Nirvana Still Big-Sellers
BY JAKE COYLE
AP ENTERTAINMENT WRITER
NEW YORK -- Much of the rock 'n' roll and pop canon is well established.
Buying the albums of `60s and `70s acts like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley is akin to a rite of passage for any young music fan. These are the artists that baby boomers love to keep buying, and with whom seemingly every teenager at some point experiments. (Remember A.J. hearing Bob Dylan for the first time in the "Sopranos" finale?)
Now that the `80s and `90s are ancient history, what albums are people still buying from those decades? Do critical favorites like Radiohead and the Pixies grow more popular with time? Or do the Backstreet Boys and Madonna still rule the charts?
The short answer is that, above all, people are buying vintage Metallica, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Guns 'N Roses and, well, Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
AC/DC's "Back in Black" (1980) last year sold 440,000 copies and has thus far sold 156,000 this year, according to the Nielsen SoundScan catalog charts, which measure how well physical albums older than two years old are selling. (All figures for this article were provided by Nielsen SoundScan.)
Those "Back in Black" numbers would make most contemporary CDs a success. Metallica's self-titled 1991 album is altogether the second-biggest selling album of the Nielsen SoundScan era, which began in 1991. "Metallica" sold 275,000 copies last year.
Bon Jovi's greatest hits collection "Cross Road" last year sold 324,000 copies, while Guns 'N Roses "Appetite for Destruction" (1987) sold 113,000. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" (1996) continues to be a holiday favorite; it was bought 289,000 times last year.
Greatest hits compilations are counted as catalog releases, and account for the majority of vintage best-sellers. Artists that commercially peaked in the `80s or `90s that have had lucrative best-of collections include Garth Brooks, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tim McGraw, Creed, Queen, Tom Petty, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Def Leppard, Aerosmith and Lionel Richie.
U2, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Dave Matthews Band and the ever-touring Jimmy Buffett also all continue to sell large amounts of old records.
Michael Jackson, of course, still has one of the most desirable back catalogs. His best- selling "Thriller" moves over 60,000 copies a year and his "Number Ones" collection yielded 162,000 sales last year.
Avid fans may be buying everything their favorite artist puts out, but there's more than nostalgia fueling vintage sales.
"Young fans aren't excluded from catalog sales - especially the ones who really get interested in music, there's always that sense of discovery," says Geoff Mayfield, the director of charts at Billboard Magazine.
Not everything maintains long-term success. Asia's self-titled 1982 album was the biggest seller of 1982, but only sold 5,000 copies last year. Whitney Houston's 1985 debut, also self-titled, was 1986's top album, but now sells about 7,000 discs a year.
The same trajectory has befallen past mega-hits like Ace of Base's "The Sign," Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" and the Spice Girl's "Spice." Though one of the best selling artists of all time, Mariah Carey's self-titled debut sold a measly 5,000 copies last year. The Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" managed only 9,000 sales.
Alas, the turning wheel of fortune isn't always kind to boy bands.
"The only thing that kept coming to mind to me was that line in the Bruce Springsteen song: `Someday we'll look back at this and it will all seem funny,'" recalls Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke.
Now, some critical hits that were trounced on their initial release by the likes of 'N Sync can claim a measure of commercial superiority. The Flaming Lips' "Soft Bulletin," often hailed as one of the best albums of the `90s by critics, sold a solid 38,000 copies last year.
Radiohead's legendary "OK Computer," currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary, last year sold 94,000 copies. Nirvana's "Nevermind" has done even better; it sold 143,000 copies in 2006.
Current events can alter the charts. When Ray Charles died, his older albums spiked for months, says Mayfield. A new album from Alanis Morissette would surely increase sales of her 1995 disc "Jagged Little Pill," one of the best selling albums of the past 20 years.
Likewise, recent reunions of the Police and Genesis can be expected to increase sales of their catalogs. The Police's 1986 compilation "Every Breath You Take" has already doubled its already strong 2006 sales by selling 107,000 copies so far this year.
Many well-regarded albums continue to do healthy business, including: U2's "Joshua Tree," Dr. Dre's "The Chronic," Beck's "Odelay," Wu-Tang Clan's "Enter the Wu-Tang," the Clash's "London Calling," Weezer's "Weezer," and the Pixies' "Doolittle." Each sold at least 20,000 copies last year.
Still, many albums that are consistently revered on critic top-ten lists of the `80s and `90s have not sold much. Joy Division's "Closer," the Smiths' "The Queen is Dead," My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless," and REM's "Murmur" all sold 12,000 copies or less last year.
Labels often reissue classic releases to capitalize on the devotion of die-hard fans and to attract a new audience. In the past few years, revered indie label Matador Records has released Pavement's first three albums, including "Slanted and Enchanted," a disc frequently ranked among the best in the `90s.
"It's almost like a new release for us," says Matador founder Chris Lombardi. "We probably sold in a one-year period, pretty much what those records sold in their first year period when they were initially released."
Though hip-hop continues to rule today's charts, many of its most historic albums don't enjoy the catalog sales that those from rock's heyday do. Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" sold 15,000 copies last year; Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique" sold 22,000; and Run DMC's "Raising Hell" sold far less than both.
So far this year, catalog sales are down 11.7 percent, but that's stronger than overall sales, which are down 14.7 percent, according to Billboard. It's a major portion of the music business. This year's total catalog sales of 95.6 million copies accounts for about 40 percent of all albums sold physically.
When people switched from cassette tapes to compact discs, catalog sales received a windfall as people re-bought their collections. The onset of digital downloading hasn't had that affect because CDs can easily be downloaded to your iPod, but digital stores do have the advantage of unlimited (virtual) store space to sell older music.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has pegged catalog downloads as 64 percent of all download sales in the U.S. (Apple declined to share its iTunes data on catalog sales.)
That still leaves illegal downloads unaccounted for, as well as a more important quantity: cultural impact. Though bands like Sonic Youth, the Ramones and Public Enemy may never sell as much as other acts, their influence remains immeasurable.
"Impact is not strictly about sales," says Fricke. "Otherwise everyone would be running around forming bands that sound exactly like Poison."

Good news to report as MJ's Thriller (Special Edition) has now scanned over 1 million units in the USA. Last week, the album ranked #100 on the Billboard Top Catalog chart and scanned 2,354 units bringing it's cumulative total to 1,005,488 units.
Elsewhere, Number Ones continues it impressive chart run ranking #41 on the same chart scanning 3,498 last week. The cumulative total for that set in the USA is 1,252,331 units.

Yes the Dangerous number is correct. RIAA only goes by albums shipped not sold. SONY shipped 7 million copies of Dangerous and so far nearly 6million of them have scanned with an additional million probably sold through book clubs. Sony shipped 3.5 million copies of HIStory which is a double album as you know and RIAA counts double albums by two which means HIStory is counted as 7 million shipped. It has scanned nearly 2.5 million with an additional million probably sold through book clubs. I hope this helps explain the discrepency :flowers:

This is just amazing. Thank you for the updates. I see his album ranks on US Amazon have also gone up. Thriller and Number Ones have both been staying between 400 and 900 rank and even the double album (actual 5 isn't it) Ultimate Collection is at only a little over 2300 rank. It just keeps getting better. I can't even imagine what it will be like when he releases new music.

To be fair, the difference between retail and wholesale figures comes mostly from the quantity of albums that are in distribution channels, meaning thousands of retail points as well as warehouses of wholesale buyers (various sales chains).
DenisRS

Please note:
1) RIAA does not update their certifications for years, sometimes for decades even;
2) most people do not know, but SoundScan by far does not update sales on the most of albums as often as a group they consider more actual/interesting, even though one would guess it would be easy for them, the more so in the latest years of all-digital information systems used everywhere;
3) Thriller's sales do not come as whatever sum of album, single and video sales. Just actual album sales, according to written description in all related statements.

Thanks piepinto, I have an update on the sales of Number Ones in the UK courtesy of MJDangerous of UKMIX. The sales are up to the week ending July 30, 2007. According to what I've learned from MJD the sales are in relation to the CD only, no news on the DVD sales. Number Ones has sold about 1,550,000 copies. With those sales it is #42 in the list of best selling albums of the decade and should enter in the all time top 100 in 2008.

Thanks to BoroButch at UKMIX here is the latest chart run here in the USA for 'Number Ones' on the Billboard Catalogue Album chart for the issue dated August 25, 2007 which is the current one. 'Number Ones' moves up 4 places this week to #45. Michael is the only artist on the chart who isn't touring, has a new album out, in the news, or deceased which is remarkable that he sells so well.

the 104 million include single sales + video sales. The singles sold maybe between 15 and 25 million together and the thriller video I DUNNO. I heard somewhere it shiould hav sold 20+ million copies worldwide, but i dunno. thats the only possible explanation of the 104 million[/b]
That's a better explanation then.

no, Guinness said it was just the album that sold 104 million copies

Please note:
1) RIAA does not update their certifications for years, sometimes for decades even;[/b]
yeah, but not so many years for Thriller.
Well I heard that some Guinness guy said the Thriller's 104 million is the combined figure of American sales (54 million) and foreign sales (50 million).
the last time RIAA updated the Thriller's certification was on April 25, 2005
the figure was 27 million. so how could Thriller sell the other 27 million copies in just one year of 2006 in the United States?
That's why I'm confused.

So is that for all time in the UK? What are the numbers in parenthesis?
This is for the sales of all time in the UK, the numbers in the parenthesis are the number of copies each album has sold from Jan thru November 2007.
The amazing thing is there are only 50 million people in the UK and Michael has two of the biggest selling albums all time there both having sold over 3.5 million copies a piece that's extraordinary.

'STARTIN'' ALL OVER AGAIN: After an absence from the Hot 100 of four years, one month and one week, Michael Jackson returns with "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008," an update of a song that was originally a No. 5 hit a quarter of a century ago. It is Jackson's first title to appear on the chart since "One More Chance" peaked at No. 83 in 2003. Since "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" bows at No. 81, it is Jackson's highest entry since "Butterflies" flew to No. 14 in 2002.
Back in 1983, the Epic single "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" was a solo effort by Jackson. The remake teams Michael with Akon and is the 47th Hot 100 hit (away from the Jackson 5) for the former and the 19th entry for the latter. Of course, Akon has only been charting since June 2004 and Jackson had his first solo chart entry on the chart dated Oct. 30, 1971, a year-and-a-half to the day before Akon was born.
While "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" is the first chart entry for Akon in 2008, he had an abundant nine chart entries in 2007. Jackson's most prolific year was 1983, when the original "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" was one of six chart entries.

WBSS 2008 down to 92 on the Billboard Hot 100..
i guess it was to be expected.. more Akon than Michael
should have gone with TGIM 2008 as lead off single

^^ Well I don't know about that coz WBSS to me is better than TGIM, also although TGIM is released in the UK, its not really doing as well as i thought. I will make the top 40 I believe that but don't think it will stay in the chart for much longer afterwards.
Still pretty good either way considering the songs are really old and many peeps prefer the original.

I think SONY is going more for the sales of T25 than promoting the singles, on amazon it's pre-orders sales are so amazing that it is causing Michael's back catalog as a whole to sell very well.
i wasnt expecting the singles to do well anyways. no video, and they're not great.

Michael is storming Australia with "Wanna be startin' Something" moving on up from No. 20 to No. 8 in the ARIA Charts and No. 4 for Single Downloads.
Even more impressive is that Thriller has re-entered the Album Charts at No. 40. First decent album in the charts for a long time!
