DON’T STOP ’TIL YOU GET ENOUGH: Forget our sales projections from Friday morning. Michael Jackson’s Number Ones moved nearly 225k at Wal-Mart, easily making it the best-selling album this week. We’re told that about half of the end caps were taken up by M.J. product and that, in some locations, Jackson CDs were merchandised in at least a half-dozen other areas throughout the store. The selling price was $9 even. When sales from other retailers are added in, Number Ones will easily top the quarter-million mark in sales this week. Whoa. (7/6a)

According to the swedish ifpi...
Gold = 20 000 copies.
Platina = 40 000 copies.

Remember that Sweden is one (if not THE) country where illegal downloading is very common. It has been a very acceptable norm to illegaly download.

By that I have to say that Thriller 25 has done very good in Sweden.To be a re-issue and selling Platinum x 4 since october 2008 is VERY VERY good here in Sweden. No other artist on the charts has that kind of impressive sale. Thriller 25 has out-sold them all.. it has even outsold Duffy's latest album and AC/DC's album "Black Ice" which both "only" have sold platinum x 2.

Michael Jackson Continues To Shake Up Charts

In the first full week following Michael Jackson's death on June 25, his catalog of solo albums shifted 800,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's up a whopping 90% compared with the previous week, when his solo sets moved 422,000 . . . His "Number Ones" greatest-hits album is the top-selling set in the United States this week, with 339,000 sold. His classic "Thriller" album is the second-biggest seller, with 187,000 . . . We also have news about the latest albums from Brad Paisley, Rob Thomas, Wilco, Jeremih and Killswitch Engage, and updates on Halestorm, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith and Miley Cyrus.

FLASH POINTS

• Michael Jackson's catalog of solo albums sold a whopping 800,000 copies in the United States in the tracking week that ended at the close of business Sunday night (July 5), according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's an increase of 90% compared with the previous week, when his combined albums sold 422,000.

• A jump in sales was expected, since this was the first full week of sales since Jackson's passing on June 25. Additionally, after most physical retailers swiftly sold out of available Jackson albums, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group were able to replenish brick-and-mortar stores with CDs last week to meet customer demand.

• In turn, physical albums accounted for 82% of Jackson's sales last week—656,000 physical albums versus 144,000 digital albums. In the week previous, when Jackson's albums moved a total of 422,000, physical albums accounted for 43% of that sum (181,000) while digital albums made up the other 57% (241,000).

• Jackson's "Number Ones" collection is the top-selling album in the United States, with 339,000 (up 215%), and will also be No. 1 on Billboard's Top Comprehensive Albums chart. "Thriller" will be No. 2 with 187,000 (up 86%) while the third-place set will be the newly released "Now 31" various-artists compilation, which will start with 169,000.

• Also, Jackson will again dominate the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. It tallies albums that are more than 18 months old, have fallen below No. 100 on the Billboard 200 and don't have a current radio single. Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200, though they can chart on the Top Comprehensive Albums list.

• Last week, Jackson had a record eight albums out of the top 10 on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart, while a Jackson 5 compilation also found its way into the upper tier. This week, the entire top 10 is all Jackson, all the time. He alone has albums at Nos. 1-6 and Nos. 8-10 while a Jackson 5 title ("The Ultimate Collection") resides at No. 7.

• On Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart, Jackson will hold down five of the top 10 slots, with "Man in the Mirror" leading as his top-selling digital song of the week (159,000; down 3%). Overall, it ranks as the second-best selling song of the week, next to the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" (215,000; up 6%).

• Jackson's total song download sales this week—including his works with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons—stand at 2.2 million downloads. Last week, the collected total was 2.6 million.

It tallies albums that are more than 18 months old, have fallen below No. 100 on the Billboard 200 and don't have a current radio single. Wow, had to double check those Canadian numbers but its true. Michael Jackson has 7/10 best selling albums in Canada as the most recent data was released today. Just phenomenal. I don't think nobody has obtained that many albums in the Canadian top 10 ever so I'm assuming this is another record Michael can take with him to the grave. His Number Ones album moved from 2 to the #1 spot. His Thriller 25 moved from 3-2. His Essential album moved up from 9 to 4. Other Jackson titles in the top 10 include Thriller at #6, Bad at #8, Greatest Hits Volume One at #9, and Off The Wall at #10. His Dangerous album surged up to #13 from its previous position at 31. US Sales will begin to trickle in tomorrow. Although Jackson will lose the #1 position by a long shot, he will still retain 3/5 best selling albums in the country. Out of the top 10 albums in the country, 6 will be Jackson. I expect Number Ones to shift between 140,000-160,000 copies this week, enough to secure the #2 spot. Other albums to look for in the top 10...Essential and Thriller still look to sell near or over 100,000 copies. Bad and Dangerous will be in the top 10 along with Off The Wall.

Total album sales in the US this week will fall roughly 40-45% from 1.1 million to 650,000-700,000

I notice this...not one media outlet has reported these figures which seems VERY odd. Michael has just made history here and not one story is available to read. I even tried to type it in on Google and nothing came up. How odd.

US CHART UPDATE:

Album results are pouring in from the US, and are on track for my previous expectations released on Friday. Number Ones will fall from the #1 spot in the US as the new Chris Daughtry album is leading by close to 100,000 copies my sources confirm.

Jackson will have the #2 selling album in the US (Number Ones) which should shift 150,000-160,000 (a 55% decline from last week) copies by the time the final results are released tomorrow night. He also looks to secure the #3 position as well with his Essential album with sales of 110,000-120,000.

Other albums in the top 10?

*Expect Thriller to take the #6 or #7 spot with final sales of 70,000-80,000 (an astounding 70% decline from last week)

*Off The Wall will take the #7 or #8 position with final sales of 55,000-65,000 (an almost 50% decline from last week)

*Dangerous should finish at #9 or #10 with final sales of 40,000-50,000.

-Bad will be close to Dangerous, only a few thousand away, and should be #11 or #12.

Overall album sales this week will be in the range of 500,000-600,000 (down 50% from last week) including Jackson 5 albums. Jackson will have 5/10 albums in the top 10, down from 6 last week. At the moment though, Number Ones is the 4th best selling album in the US (Top 20 below) and is in the Top 10 of the global album chart (THriller is too!). Since Michael Jackson's death his greatest hits compilations have done very well on the global chart but there is one that surprised me. Despite the tracklisting being chosen by each country individually, the King of Pop album seems (in most places) to be selling worse than Number Ones and Essential. Does this seem strange to you?
Also, I really think it's a shame that because we have several pointless compilations rather than just one, Michael Jackson probably won't have the biggest selling album worldwide this year. Instead he'll have 2 or 3 albums selling quite well. I'd rather all sales were combined into a single album like would be the case if Sony had not released any more albums after 'Number Ones'. The other compilations didn't serve any purpose IMO.

Billboard.com News: Demi Lovato Debuts At No. 1 On Billboard 200, But Michael Jackson Still Reigns

Demi Lovato rules the Billboard 200 chart this week, as the Disney singer/actress' sophomore album "Here We Go Again" (Hollywood Records) debuts at No. 1 with 108,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Her first set, "Don't Forget," bowed at No. 2 less than a year ago with 89,000.

Lovato's debut marks the fourth No. 1 album of the year for Disney Music Group - a record for the company. Previous chart-toppers in 2009 were Rascal Flatts' "Unstoppable,"the "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack and Jonas Brothers' "Lines, Vines and Trying Times." Disney had three albums debut at No. 1 in both 2007 and 2006.

But while Lovato ruled the Billboard 200, Michael Jackson once again had the best-selling album. The King of Pop's 2003 hits set "Number Ones" tops the all-encompassing Top Comprehensive Albums chart by shifting 154,000 copies, down 21% from the week prior. (Top Comprehensive Albums ranks the top selling albums in the country, regardless of age; whereas the Billboard 200 houses only new and current titles -- generally those less than 18 months old.)

Elsewhere on the Billboard 200, Jordin Sparks' sophomore album "Battlefield" fights its way to a No. 7 debut, selling 48,000 copies. It's the "American Idol" winner's second top 10 set, as her 2007 self-titled debut entered and peaked at No. 10 with 119,000.

Last week's No. 1 album, Daughtry's "Leave This Town," falls to No. 2 with just under 101,000 copies (down 63%). Maxwell's "BLACKsummers'night" slips one spot to No. 3 with 72,000 (down 30%) while the "Now 31" album holds at No. 4 with 58,000 (down 17%). The "Hannah Montana 3" TV soundtrack falls to slots to No. 5 with 54,000 (down 26%) while the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." is down one to No. 6 with 52,000 (down 4%).

Rounding out the top 10 is Kings of Leon's "Only By The Night" moving up two positions to No. 8 with 39,000 (up 19%), Taylor Swift's "Fearless" staying course at No. 9 with 37,000 (up less than 2%) and Lady GaGa's "The Fame" climbing one rung to No. 10 with 28,000 (down 9%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending July 26) totaled 6.25 million units, down 7.8% compared to the sum last week (6.78 million) and down 20.3% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (7.84 million). Year to date album sales stand at 201.7 million, down 14.1% compared to the same total at this point last year (234.9 million).

Sony needs to work their magic for the Christmas holiday season. If I was them I would do a special with Wal-Mart and ship millions of MJ albums out in Nov/Dec with a cheap price tag ($10) and keep them in a prominent location for a solid month. (Nov 30th-Dec 31st). This would help boost the MJ sales.

KEY FACT: Right now Michael Jackson's "Number Ones" album is the 4th biggest selling album of 2009 in the United States. As of next week, it will officially move into the 3rd position kicking Eminem's new album into 4th place and be within 100,000 copies of beating Taylor Swift's album which currently has the #1 position. Let's hope MJ can sustain sales for the rest of the summer. We also have to watch for big releases this fall from Madonna (best of album called Celebration) as well as Whitney and other big names releasing this fall. It will be a horse race to the finish line thats for sure!

As per my earlier post (above), Number Ones will move into 2nd position behind Taylor Swift next week because he is likely to outsell Hannah Montana soundtrack by almost 100,000 and is only 39,000 behind her in the chart at the moment. That would put him about 61,000 ahead.
As you said though, 'Ones' is likely to be between 80,000 and 100,000 behind Taylor Swift and then hopefully will become the biggest selling album of the year in the following week. I expect it to be overtaken by the end of year though unless Sony will have a plan in place to boost sales again at Halloween and Xmas.

Current global sales estimations up to the end of the last charting week bring total sales of MJ albums since June 25th to 8.8million.

Once this weeks sales are added, I would expect that figure to reach 10.1million (assuming an average 20% drop in sales across the range of albums this week).
Obviously shipments from Sony/Universal to stores would be much higher.

This is based on the global Top40 sales, constructed of sales from the world's biggest music-selling territories since June 25th only, and so is an underestimate for 2009 total sales. As MJ was not in the Top 40 prior to the charting week of his death I have no easy indication of what his worldwide sales were since the beginning of 2009 and haven't yet bothered to compile a list. BUT I think these figures are good indication. We should probably add a few hundred thousand to these figures to get total 2009 sales, but I'll leave it as this for now.

How do they convince people to keep buying Elvis, The Beatles, et al? Easy! Just release another package once the 'heat' dies down. It happens all of the time.

Michael also has many unreleased tracks/DVDs that they can call on to 'stimulate' further demand of his back catalogue. Don't you worry, MJ will keep selling long into the future. There will be peaks and there will be more quiet periods, but MJ will always sell records and DVDs, quite simply because he was the greatest!

Michael Jackson Has #1 Album In US; Dominates With 3 Out of 4 Best Sellers


Michael Jackson's albums continue to dominate the Billboard charts in the United States. According to initial numbers from Hits Daily Double, MJ has the #1, #3, and #4 albums in the country. His Number Ones compilation sold 100,000 copies easily beating out the competition. The Essential and Thriller shifted around 50,000 copies each giving them Top 5 status. Jackson had 6 other titles in the top 50, giving him 9 out of 50 of the best selling albums in the US.

Total album sales this week were around 320,000 in the US alone.

Michael Jackson Has #1 Album In US; Dominates With 3 Out of 4 Best Sellers


Michael Jackson's albums continue to dominate the Billboard charts in the United States. According to initial numbers from Hits Daily Double, MJ has the #1, #3, and #4 albums in the country. His Number Ones compilation sold 100,000 copies easily beating out the competition. The Essential and Thriller shifted around 50,000 copies each giving them Top 5 status. Jackson had 6 other titles in the top 50, giving him 9 out of 50 of the best selling albums in the US.

Total album sales this week were around 320,000 in the US alone.

I notice that despite Vince not seeing the massive sales of some other MJ albums since Mike's death, it's sales have been very steady and haven't fallen off anywhere near as much. In fact it's sales increased.
This is it's mediatraffic world chart run for the past 6 weeks:

Week Ending Aug. 16, 2009: King Of Country Boots King Of Pop

Michael Jackson's Number Ones sold 80,000 copies this week and would have slipped from #1 to #2 if catalog albums were eligible to compete on The Billboard 200. It is now just 23,000 copies behind Taylor Swift's Fearless as the best-selling album of 2009. The Essential Michael Jackson sold 43,000 copies and would have dipped from #3 to #5. Thriller sold 34,000 and would have dropped from #4 to #13. This marks the first time since he died that Jackson hasn't had three of the week's top five best-selling albums in the U.S. But this is the eighth straight week that he has had two of the five best-sellers, still a remarkable achievement.

Thriller this week pulls ahead of the Eagles' Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 on Nielsen/SoundScan's recap of the best-selling albums in its history. Thriller has sold 5,366,000 copies since May 25, 1991, compared to 5,356,000 for the Eagles' compilation. The Recording Industry Assn. of America, which goes back much further than 1991, continues to list the Eagles' album as its all-time best-seller, at 29 million, with Thriller a beat behind at 28 million. Expect movement there soon.

The Essential Michael Jackson is #1 in the U.K. for the seventh straight week. This is the longest run on top in that country since Leona Lewis' Spirit logged a total of eight weeks at #1 from November 2007 to November 2008.

Thriller has sold 2.5 million albums since his death.

Number Ones has sold 2.3 million albums since his death. The total global sales of Number Ones was at 6.5 million in 2006. By May of 2009 this rose to 7 million. Current sales this summer take the total global sales of Number Ones to over 9 million!

The figures show another 20% drop in sales since last week.

Using the same data, Mike has sold an estimated 12.1 million albums since he died. Of course, this figure is going to be slightly higher when ALL markets are considered - mediatraffic only uses several large markets.

How did you count that? It has to be a lot higher because Michaels albums have been topping everywhere. And because he is still selling around 800 000 albums world-wide after the sales drop. Or did you leave J5 out? I think it must be more like 13-15 million. Or even more.

Notice that KoP was already #1 for 2 weeks when it was initially released 1 year ago.

2008 at #1 and 2009 at #1 :) And eventhough Austrian newspapers tend to distance themselves from Michael Jackson, they cannot stop him from rocking the charts.

As far as I know, Austria is currently the only country to have a #1 album being a Michael Jackson album, right? :)

Just to keep everybody up to speed on MJ's global record sales since his death, I have been recording album, digital download, dvd, and ringtone sales. You will be amazed of the numbers I am about to post. Remember, if anything these numbers are conservative and are only based on factual numbers from countries who publicly release music data. In reality, these numbers are probably 15-20% lower then actual sales but it's the best I can do without being accused of inflating the figures.

Also, official RIAA numbers for sales in the US came out today, Jackson actually had the #2 and #9 best selling albums in the country. HitsDailyDouble's numbers were way off, Thriller actually surged over 30%, selling 35,000 copies and came in at #9 in the best albums chart.

Total album sales in the US for this week were up 10% to 210,000.

Does anyone else out there think that Michael is going to break all records again by end of year? The fact that Number One's has now sold as many copies as Off the Wall, back in 1982, when Michael Jackson had the highest selling album of all time by a black artist seems to pale in comparison to the heights he has attained in both life and after. His music will obviously live on. The number of digital downloads alone is mind boggling. Can you imagine what the total numbers would be if file-sharing sites, FTP, and torrents didn't yet exist?!?!?! I guarantee you the numbers would be three times what they are now.

I got them from UKMIX and he got them from a guy who has a subscription to Soundscan sorry I can't help further.

Since Jackson's passing through Aug. 30, Jackson's solo albums have sold 4.74 million in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. He has sold 8.34 million digital tracks in same span of time.

As Billboard 200 chart manager Keith Caulfield recently noted, Jackson's total album sales since his death are greater than what his catalog sold between all of 2004 and 2008 (3.9 million).

Year-to-date, Jackson's "Number Ones" has passed Taylor Swift's "Fearless" as 2009's top-selling album. The former set has sold 1,688,000 copies, the latter 1,642,000.

Including J5 album sales I think it is more likely 5.5-6 million albums sold in US alone!

I've calculated J-5 album sales which are only 250,000 since his death, which would take his total sales to 5 million which is still amazing. I expect this number to surge to 6 million by years end with the busy Halloween and Christmas season approaching plus publicity with the This Is It movie coming out Oct 28th.

What I find weird and ridiculous is that jackson5 albums and Michaels first solo albums are totally ignored by people/fans and ignored with any promo of Motown!!!

What the hell is wrong with that?

I know I am missing lots of DVD sales in that total. I do not have access to all the DVD totals globally, and I know his DVD's have been flying off the shelves all around the world. I would imagine my figure of 3 million is VERY conservative. It also does not include single sales, but in today's environment 90% of singles are basically digital downloads. Very little singles in stores are purchased so that number would be very low.
