Pepsi is paying homage to the King of Pop one more time.

The brand is working with Michael Jackson's estate to create a limited edition package featuring the singer, according to an executive close to the company. The package coincides with the 25th Anniversary of the "Bad" album, which was released on Aug. 31, 1987.

The package will be a 16 oz. can available in convenience stores and grocery stores around Memorial Day, according to Beverage Digest. The can, said to have a blue background with an image of Mr. Jackson dancing, is expected to cost 99 cents. Pepsi declined to comment.

Pepsi sponsored the 1988 Bad World Tour. The tour spanned 16 months, including 123 concerts in 15 countries attended by 4.4 million fans. When it concluded, it was the largest grossing tour in history and the tour with the largest audience.

The brand's relationship with Mr. Jackson dates back to 1984 and the "New Generation" campaign. Infamously, the singer's hair caught fire during a commercial shoot that was part of that campaign. Mr. Jackson appeared in a number of commercials for the brand over the years, performing versions of "Billie Jean" and "Bad," among other songs.

Pepsi has a long association with music but has been putting a particular emphasis on that area in the last year. It poured $60 million into a sponsorship of "X Factor," Simon Cowell's music competition, and featured the show's winner, Melanie Amaro, in a Super Bowl spot (http://adage.com/article/special-report-super-bowl/pepsi-s-super-bowl-efforts-emphasize-music-x-factor/232451/). The tagline for the ad, created by TBWA/Chiat/Day (http://lookbook.adage.com/Agencies/TBWA-Chiat-Day) was "Where there's Pepsi, there's music."

Earlier this week, Pepsi confirmed to Ad Age its relationship with singer Nicki Minaj (http://adage.com/article/adages/pepsi-confirms-nicki-minaj-relationship-denies-pop/233765/), who is said to be appearing in a new global campaign for the brand.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In November 2011, the estate filed a trademark application for 'King of Pop'.

This should be..., and if you remember..., Thriller25 had huge commercial sales... in the US, and it would top the chart, if it was allowed...

NOW, BAD 25 can be no.1 at the Billboard top 200, after 25 years...., but only fans can do that=buy the album!

Why should Adele's name be on a Michael Jackson project?

I will boycott the product with Adele's name. I know my vote is a drop in the bucket, but atleast I wont feel uneasy.

Adele is the one who called MJ ***** and doubted his ability to perform the 2009 concert.

It was a tough time for MJ. He had to live up to the standards of Thriller, and the media, critics and public were already ganging up. BAD was the fruit of his blood and sweat. Nobody need to come and enjoy the limelight today.

I doubt that memo above is authentic.
IMO Fans stating Adelle disrespected MJ in that short on the fly interview is taking her words out of context and twisting her meaning. Just like they use to do to MJ. She said more than that and it was all very positive. Fans should know by now that not everyone who uses the term ***** does so out of disrespect (not everyone is privy to the fan code about the name ) It it is a common term used in the UK and Australia. Even some fan boards used it until recently before they got informed MJ didn't like the name.

We have to judge by what is being said and who is saying it to see if it is meant to belittle. Clearly that was not the case with Adelle. If you watch the video of her speaking she says she admired MJ. Yes She mentioned she felt MJ may not be able to do the 50 dates on the tour. (nothing wrong with thinking that) Many fans also felt he may not be able to do all the dates. I don't see it was stated to disrespect or to belittle him because of her other words which show she was not. I listened to the whole video of her speaking and not just the one liner fans keep crediting to her unfairly. We need to listen to all her words and not twist like the media does. Its not right and its not fair to do that to anyone.

Now in agreement with you I don't want any duet made of MJ and Adelle or MJ and anyone singing , but I doubt that Sony memo above is real ..IMO its just fans scamming again for attention, which happens with every new release. If fans don't like a particular song on the Album just don't buy it, but there certainly is no reason to call a boycott of Michael's Album over ones personal choice. I feel Boycotting Michael's music only hurts him and fans in the long run. I assure you Buzz, Adelle is not an enemy of MJ or a MJ hater .. Not in any way shape or form. She is Also one of Michael's SONY/ATV Catalog artists.

The only thing I don't mind being fake on that document is the I just can't stop loving you feat. what is wrong with a adele feature? Michael did it for the Thriller 25 album release. He released a single with will.i.am?

Im sorry but if you want another number1 in the charts in this era without michael being alive, your going to need something to get it recognised in the first place. I think someone like adele doing a duet with michael would work.

But its probably fake anyway!

Who cares about n°1? As far as I am concerned I care about good music. So, if Stevie Wonder, Siedah Garett or people who actually had something to do with the BAD album are not featured, then there is no reason for anyone to ruin MJ's album by inserting some random artists. I don't even know who's Adele, and I don't care.

what is wrong with a adele feature? Michael did it for the Thriller 25 album release. He released a single with will.i.am?

First of all, Michael was alive back then so it was his choice to do those remixes with Will.I.Am and secondly, those tracks sucked anyway, just like the rest of the remixes off T25.

Im sorry but if you want another number1 in the charts in this era without michael being alive, your going to need something to get it recognised in the first place.

I could care less about that or if he ever has another #1 hit. That's not the point of posthumous releases. He already has such a strong and unbreakable legacy and he certainly doesn't need another #1 hit to prove something. Michael already proved his point, there's no need for smash hits and #1 singles anymore. He's already the King and nothing is gonna change that.

I think someone like adele doing a duet with michael would work.

I disagree. Personally, I've never been a big fan of ruined classic songs.

But its probably fake anyway!

Thank gawd indeed.

Looks like I'm in the minority of the fanbase, I enjoyed the Thriller 25 remixes (aside from Billie Jean 08 & Beat It 08). So I wouldn't mind a few on the Bad release; but I think they should only use artists Michael has worked with before.

But I don't think remixes should be the highlight of Bad 25 as they were intended to be for Thriller. Unreleased songs are a must and I just hope this is handled properly and we aren't given just one that we've already heard on YouTube.

The trademark filings allow them to use the logo for whatever they want. It doesn't necessarily mean confirmation that each one of those things will be released. It's just a legal procedure.

Guys, the design is real, just confirmed by Chinese Pepsi!

Check this article out: http://www.mcwade.com/DesignTalk/2009/02/does-pepsis-new-logo-work/

Pepsi had a new logo and typeface out back in 2009. The logo and typeface on the can you posted were replaced, at least here in United States. Is the new Pepsi logo being used in China?

I think it doesn't make sense for Pepsi to revert back to a former design just for this commerorative packaging. A corporation spends tons of money on branding. Once it settles for a new logo, Pepsi wants people to remember and associate with the new logo. Why would Pepsi want to confuse consumers by flip floping new and old designs?

If Pepsi wants to revert to old design for this particular MJ can, it makes more sense to use the design back in the 80's (BAD era), which looked very different as well. Pepsi has changed its logo several times in the past decades.

I have no idea whether the new Pepsi logo is being used globally. At least, in the US, the new logo has been used for a while now. Check out pepsi.com and see how Pepsi is using the new round logo (that looks like Obama's campaign logo) everywhere on its page. So, I highly doubt the Chinese design will be carried out in the US. Of course, there is always a possibility that Pepsi reverts to the replaced logo.

For fans outside of U.S., have you seen the new logo I'm talking about?

As far as I know, the old logo is still used in several markets internationally and I think China is one of the countries who still has the old logo. I remember reading an article at the time, when Pepsi was introducing the new logo, and I specifically remember reading about Pepsi not introducing it's new logo on in the Chinese market for some reason. I'll try to find that article.

Thanks. That may explain why the old logo is still being used in the Chinese market. When Pepsi changed its logo, it caused quite a discussion here in the US. Many people think the new logo looks "boring" and too similar to the Obama campaign logo. I have seen large scale commercial campaign everywhere when Pepsi introduced the new logo. It's now being used in all TV ads - on the x-factor one and the Sofia Vergara one.

Like I said, I highly doubt the same Chinese design will be used in the US market and markets where the new logo is introduced.

Yeah, I assume they'll use a version with the new logo in the markets that have that one, though the design will probably be similar if not identical to this one (apart from the actual logo of course). I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Also, here's the article I mentioned. It's an interesting read actually.

Seems to be true. China still has the old logo. New logo seems to be mainly used in USA.

Although Pepsi has a new logo in the United States, they still have the old one used in China.

Since when did Pepsi drop him because of the allegations? They dropped him after the tour ended. This was what they were sponsoring, it ended. The entire merchandising world were calling for them to drop him. I have the news clips to prove it. There were even Coca-Cola advertisements in the newspaper mocking Michael's dehydration. They finished with him when his tour ended which was 3-4 months. The official quote was ''Our agreement with Michael Jackson have always been event driven. Our agreement for this era was to promote this particular tour and this tour has ended, that ends our agreement.'' If they were to dump him because of the allegations, they would've done it much quicker than 3-4 months.

Who on Twitter said this?? I think people need to let go of an incident that happened almost twenty years ago, decisions made by in large by different people under extreme circumstances. Even though we as MJ fanatics know that Michael was innocent, Pepsi dropping Michael was not a personal vendetta or action against Michael. Pop stars have been dropped by sponsers for far less than being accused of child molestation. Pepsi is a company, an entity, therefore I see no problem with the Estate using a former sponser to promote the anniversary of a brilliant album. Michael obvious burried the hatchet considering he began to to business with them yet again. Maybe some fans need to do the same. IMO of course. :)

A very wise post indeed.
Even if we believe Pepsi dropped MJ directly because of the allegations, it is understandable. As you said, other stars have been dropped by their sponsors for far less, so why should MJ be any different? Business is business.

The Bottom line is that Michael's children benefit from this and that's all that counts. Pepsi redoing business once again with Michael via his Estate, shows that they believe Michael is I N N O C E N T of being inappropriate with male minors.

Obvioulsy the European-Football-Championship is the reason. Pepsi in Germany will have Podolski, a German football-player on his bottles. So I think in Europe many countries will have their top-players on the cans or bottles.

Austria will have the MJ-Pepsi-theme on 0,5, 1,0 and 1,5 Pet-bottles. But Austria is not a football-country.

Obviously I know nothing about the European-Football-Championship
But thanks for that info :D

I drank it. In holland the can was for sale at almost every grocery store. It tasted like peaches with bubbles. Nothing special though.
I read in some boards that a lot of fans didn't like the taste, but I wouldn't mind if it taste like Satan's piss, the can is so pretty
This reminds me about the HIStory Bubblegum with stickers in 1995, it didn't taste good either but I bought hundreds just for the collectible stickers :P

Pepsi isn't a sponsor for UEFA Euro 2012, Coca-Cola it is.

So there must be another reason why MJ's cans are not going to be available in some countries... Now I'm waiting for an answer by Pepsi Italy's Customer Service about those cans...

Do you know why Pepsi have commenced marketing the BAD25 project BEFORE the project has even been announced? Doesn't it seem strange? It seems inefficient to me - I would have thought they would wait until BAD25 (e.g. album/DVD/bluray) was on the shelves before launching the Pepsi cans.
How long will Pepsi run this promotion in china?

It's very strange
No one announced the Bad 25 can
It just happened.

No promotion yet. I first thought some cans were leaked to the market before the announcement
But, more and more supermarkets put this on shelves.....and many staff workers didn't even know it is Michael Jackson cans. They just thought it is another new package.

I have contacted Pepsi China. Beijing headquarter said they didn't know, they said it should only be for the US.

Some Chinese cities' Pepsi distributors informed me there was a plan in secret, some said they would unveil it in mid-May.

I wrote to the Estate, and they didn't give me a clear answer.

It's a mess. but more and more fans found and bought the cans in China.

Pepsi is also prepping a 25th-anniversary campaign in mid-May for the rerelease of Michael Jackson's "Bad" that will include a series of remixes from superstar DJs like Skrillex, Diplo and A-Trak. The exclusive tracks are set to be accessed through a special Pepsi-can promotion where fans can scan a code with their phone to hear a song. Pepsi has unveiled a new multiyear global marketing campaign, complete with a new tagline -- "Live for Now" -- and commercials featuring the biggest names in music. First up in the campaign is Nicki Minaj, whose 2010 single "Moment for Life" acts as soundtrack for the ad, out May 7.

It's a deal that will make Minaj a worldwide spokeswoman and also give her enough fodder to fuel two songs' worth of material on her sophomore album, "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

THE COLA WARS
Read an Excerpt | Buy The Issue
"Nicki has momentum. She's a maverick," Frank Cooper, PepsiCo chief marketing officer of global consumer engagement, told Billboard in this week's cover story. "She represents the kind of artist who's in the moment, making things happen on her own terms."

(Cooper calls the strategy SoLoMo, or Social/Local/Mobile.)

Jackson, of course, famously struck a ground-breaking, multifaceted endorsement/sponsorship deal with Pepsi in 1983, and was also infamously burned by an accidental fire during a 1984 commercial shoot.

And, coming later this year, is an initiative that Cooper believes will make Pepsi a "major player in the music ecosystem," one that has already led to discussions with heavy-hitters like Warner Music Group chairman/CEO of recorded music Lyor Cohen, Interscope Geffen A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine and Universal Music Group chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge.

Though Cooper's unable to talk specifics, what he is able to say suggests that Pepsi is looking to partner with labels in a major way: "The industry has certain market failures and structural gaps, so we're looking at how we might fill those, and see how those will open up opportunities to generate some revenue [for the industry]."

Pepsi's chief rival, Coca-Cola, recently announced the launch of "Move to the Beat," one of the brand's largest ad campaigns to date, created to support its sponsorship of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Find out more about the revived "Cola Wars" in the latest issue of Billboard and read an excerpt on Billboard.biz.

I really don't get why many fans are against this commemorative cans spreading aggressiveness about it! When Michael decided to cancel the Dangerous Tour his contract with Pepsi and association ended, at the end of the tour the contract concluded because that was the way it was arranged. Pepsi didn't drop him due to the allegations, aren't I right!?

True. I also imagine that since they're supposedly coming to Romania too (kind of doubt it, but still), they should also come to major European countries such as Germany or France. Especially since Michael has a lot of fans in those two countries.

It would make sense that if the cans would come to the little and unknown Romania from the forgotten Eastern Europe, they'd probably come to Germany or France too.

If not, then f*ck logic...

i never forget how it taste.
for me also like peaches, but a mixture of of peaches and raspberry. absolutely not a natural taste. something like Red Bull. but in another taste (peaches & raspberry, and a lot lot dioxide)
but the raspberry is in real fruit tea. and its in real a mixture of peaches, fruit tea, guarana, and caffeine. but u will only taste the peaches and the fruit tea, and very sweet (sugar).

the ingredients are:

calcium lactate
fruit tea extract
magnesium carbonate

Pepsi brings back Michael Jackson in ads

NEW YORK — PepsiCo Inc. is going on a reunion tour with The King of Pop.

The Purchase, N.Y.-based company on Thursday is announcing its deal with the estate of Michael Jackson to use the late pop star's image for its new global marketing push. The nature of the promotion will vary by country, but will include a TV ad, special edition cans bearing Jackson's image and chances to download remixes of some of Jackson's most famous songs.

Pepsi, which first partnered with Jackson in 1983, did not disclose the terms of its deal with the singer's estate.

The promotion is part of a global marketing blitz planned for the year ahead by Pepsi, which is looking to revive its brand and win back market share from The Coca-Cola Co. Next week, Pepsi is also launching a TV ad featuring singer Nicki Minaj and announcing details of its partnership with Twitter to stream concerts online.

Brad Jakeman, Pepsi's chief creative officer, says the broader "Live For Now" campaign was developed over the past 10 months and is intended to amplify the company's longstanding ties with pop culture.

Pepsi has a lot riding on its new push. Although the company has a diverse portfolio of brands including Frito-Lay, Quaker Oats and Tropicana, it's often judged by the performance of its namesake cola. And in 2010, Pepsi was knocked out of the No. 2 spot among sodas in the U.S. by Diet Coke, with Coke remaining in the No. 1 position, according to the industry tracker Beverage Digest.

Last month, Pepsi also reported that volume in its key Americas beverages unit slipped by 1 percent in the first three months of the year.

The Jackson promotion is one aspect of Pepsi's strategy to reverse that slide. Consumers in the U.S. and China will be the first to get a taste of the campaign in coming weeks, which is timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of "Bad," the singer's multiplatinum album. The campaign will spread to about two dozen countries by fall.

In the U.S., the company is rolling out collectible 16-ounce blue cans that bear an image of Jackson striking one of his iconic poses. Consumers will be able to scan codes on the cans with their phones to download remixed tracks from "Bad."

In the Chinese market, consumers will also see a TV ad featuring Jackson. Contests will also let consumers win tickets to a Michael Jackson-inspired show by Cirque du Soleil and leather jackets inspired by the singer's style. The global campaign builds on Pepsi's deal with the singer's estate last year to use his image in a commercial that premiered during the "The X Factor" TV show last year.

Although Pepsi is banking on the nostalgia Jackson can evoke, the partnership also resurrects painful memories.

In 1984, Jackson's hair famously caught fire while filming a commercial for Pepsi at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The blaze happened after a spark from a pyrotechnics display landed on the singer's head. Jackson suffered severe burns and many trace his addiction to painkillers to the incident. Pepsi gave Jackson $1.5 million as a result.

Other music partnerships have led to controversy for Pepsi as well. In 2002, conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly ran a segment criticizing Pepsi for an ad featuring the rapper Ludacris. The company pulled the ad the next day, but ran into trouble a few months later when it ran ads featuring Ozzy Osbourne, who is known for peppering his speech with swear words. Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons urged a boycott and the issue was resolved after Pepsi agreed to donate $3 million to charity.

The partnership with Nicki Minaj hasn't yet raised many eyebrows, even though her lyrics also contain profanity and sexual content. Jakeman noted that Minaj's song "Moment for Life" was selected for the ad campaign because of specific lyrics that perfectly captured the Pepsi ethos of living in the moment.

At a time when Pepsi is looking to take on a bigger rival, another stanza in the song might have relevance as well: "In this very moment I slay Goliath with a sling...And I will retire with the crown."

It's a message Pepsi could very well be sending to Coke.
