Wouldn't it be great if Bad sell 3.9 million copies to reach 40 million copies for its 25th Anniversary

one of the members here (smoothcriminal_05) provided updates on Michael record sales 2 years ago and as of July 2010 The Bad album sold 36.1 million worldwide, idk how much it sold since then so it might even be less than 3.9 million

I think it's already close to 40 MIL. The Estate & Sony should give as most current updates. But with BAD25 I'm sure Bad will reach 40 MIL mark.

You would think Bad has already hit 40 million worldwide by now...especially the spike in sales after MJ's passing.

i think bad is around 35mill...but it'll be nice if this re release becomes a huge success, and bad album ends up being the second best selling album of all time, and smooth criminal becomes a #1 hit, making bad the only album with 6 #'s 1.
and then dangerous gets also a re-release and enters the top 10 biggest selling of all time. makin

Whatever, the current sales of 'BAD' are, if they're careful with this re-release then sales of the new album will be added to the original. There are different rules in different territories, so they will need to be careful. It will certainly limit what they can add to the album...
If they get the balance wrong then 'BAD25' sales will not officially count toward 'BAD' sales. It would be nice if all sales could be added together and logged officially in the all-time charts.

I thought I saw it somewhere that Bad has sold 45 million, where can we check the numbers?

We need to buy BAD from UK.
In order to beat Adele, we need to buy 1.026.300 of Bad albums, piece of cake :clapping:
and few millions on top of that amount so she has to do some work to get to same numbers:-)

Yep, Joe Voges says Bad sold 35million copies. But according to him, Dangerous sold 40million.
Don't know what sources he used. I really hope Sony or the Estate will reveal a more precise amount in the future.

^ Didn't Joe start researching for his book 5 years prior to MJ's passing in 2009? because when his sales shooting up in 2009 bad was one of the top selling and it was at 36.1 million in 2010 according to smooth who tracked the sales

BAD25 should sell as much as possible.

Hopefully more than 100.000 copies in UK alone. - That way BAD will beat Adele. :)

It wouldn't harm to make a difference between shipped units and actual sold units.

I don't think we need one million sold to beat Adele, wasn't it only several 10.000's?

That was between Thriller and 21, but in order Bad to beat Adele's 21, a little over million needs to be sold in UK:-)
I have hight expectations for Bad:chillin:

Second best selling album of all time is Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon with 50 MIL copies sold. Dangerous is 13th best selling album of all time with 32 MIL copies sold (although that number is much higher, around 42 MIL copies). Bad is 19th best selling album of all time with 30 MIL copies sold (although that number is much higher, around 35 MIL copies).

We need new update directly from the Estate or Sony because this numbers are the same since 2001.

It's hard to tell. It's possible though. But according to most sources including wikipedia Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon is second best selling.

Back in Black

"The album has sold an estimated 49 million copies worldwide to date, making it the third highest-selling album of all time, and the best-selling hard rock album, as well as the best-selling album ever released by an Australian musical act."

The wikipedia list is old as hell, as far as I know 'Back In Black' passed Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon'.

No surprise though, it's one of the best rock albums in history and a very special one too since it was their first album they released with Brian Johnson as their new lead singer after Bon Scott died.

I wish we could have the updated sales figures for the top most selling albums of all time, oh well...

Thats why Mj Estate and Sony should provide any new updated at least as part of BAD 25 promo!

BUT:
Bad is still one of the best selling albums in the world.
Released on August 31, 1987, Bad has moved 45 million albums worldwide.

The wikipedia entry is pretty unreliable, but I don't think that article is a reliable source either. I mean, it's possible Bad has sold 45 million copies, but it would be nice to have an official source for that number. An article claiming it has sold 45 million doesn't mean much because a lot of articles have totally different numbers.

9. Michael Jackson Bad 33,200,000 (if it sells 4 mill it'll be inside the top 5)
the 30 mill number was reported during HIStory era,
20. Michael Jackson Dangerous 30,000,000 (could be easily inside the top 15 right now)
as well as for Dangerous - 25 mill in 1994!
71. Michael Jackson History 19,600,000 (it should be 20 mill, even more)
in 1996, New York Post reported that Sony had had success with HIStory album that... reached 20 mill copies.
75. Michael Jackson Off The Wall 19,000,000 (it seems low it stand around 20 mill)
in one Oxford dictionary from mid 90s is stated about Michael Jackson that from Off the Wall was sold 20 mill copies

What I know about albums sales... is in the blue text color.

I would love for BAD to overtake Adele's 21 here in the UK, but I don't see it happening, 21 is still selling incredibly well here, still in the top 5 of the charts, it's not impossible though!

The list by peru94 is that in the US or worlwide numbers? In the Joe vogel book it said Thriller sold 110 million.
this is worldwide. thriller hasn't sold 110 million. maybe including singles, but i doubt it.
at most thriller stands around 70 mill. it is a strong catalog album that sells around 1300-1800 copies weekly in the united states. and an estimation of 4000-5000 world wide.
bad , dangerous, off the wall haven't see them inside the top 200 catalog album, but since this is it sells 500 copies weekly,it is very likely they sell 600-800 weekly and 2000 worldwide
not counting number ones (sells only in the us around 1800-2400),the essential (1800-2000) and jackson 5 millenium collection (around 1800-2300 weekly)

based on this and world wide charts , i would say mj sells about 20,000-30,000 albums weekly. and don't counting his music videos charts ,which is HUGE worldwide.

Thanks. I get confused about the numbers because in Joe Vogel's book it says 110 million.

i know it says that, even world record guinness said it, but when you look at actual sales of every country. you'll notice it hasn't sold that.
as i posted somewhere, this forum http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=63110 was dedicated only to mj worldwide sales. now the users that kept updated created a new forum, dedicated only to mj sales

Thanks for the link to the new forum. I liked the old UKmix thread and was sad to see it's no longer updated.

I am thinking Bad 25 will sell about 500,000 units in the USA when all is said and done. First week debut will probably be in the 50,000 to 75,000 range good enough for a top 10 ranking. Worldwide, first week sales will probably come in around 170,000 to 200,000 or so with final figures around 1.5 million when it's all finished. I think that's realistic for a re-release especially when Thriller 25 (a more popular past album re-released when MJ was alive) sold over 900,000 copies in the US and 2.5+ million worldwide.

That sounds very reasonable.

On the point of Thriller sales, the Guiness Book of world records said it had sold 110million but this figure came from MJ's people. Guiness said later that they never received official confirmation from Sony and no proof from MJ. Kinda shows Guiness isn't all that.

But then again there seems to be more happening to advertise Bad 25 this time around, plus if there actually is a Bad Tour DVD coming, that one is strong visual stimulation.
They should and I mean really should make the Bad Tour a cinema release. It would help reach sales of the This Is It album at least!

1.5 worldwide seem reasonable
but we have to keep in mind, this is getting a lot of promotion, and now mj has a legend-untouchable
status.when he released thriller25 , even though mj was a legend back then, many seemed to forget that, didn't get treatment he deserved , but now he has more supporters and fans...
if they do the same promotion they did with this is it
i'd say it might sell 3 mill worldwide , or even the same sales of this is it sold (5 mill)

If they pack the bad 25 cd with the bad tour dvd or BR (like a two disc special edition) for a reasonable price, it should sell 5 mill (I hope).

Guys, do you remember?

After a big debut week for the 25th anniversary edition of "Thriller" with 166,000 copies sold (it was released on February 11, 2008 internationally), in its second week, the updated "Thriller" dropped 65 percent and sold just 55,000 copies, according to hitsdailydouble.com (http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/).

BUT:
01 May 2008
According to Soundscan (U.S.A.): 518,840 copies
According to Global Album Chart (Worldwide): 1,702,000 copies

Now, after the official press release... yes, WIKI has to accept the source and put the BAD album among the top best sellers! (because any attempt to update wiki pages of best sellers are blocked by MJ haters, but now...)

on Wikipedia MJ haters will block any update in MJs favour.
Thats why Mj Estate and Sony should provide any new updated at least as part of BAD 25 promo!

BUT:
Bad is still one of the best selling albums in the world.
Released on August 31, 1987, Bad has moved 45 million albums worldwide.

I think numbers given by record companies and in articles tend to be exaggerated for PR reasons - but that is the case for every artist, not just MJ! The Pink Floyd "Dark Side of The Moon" 50 million number is referenced from an article's claim, the AC/DC 49 million number too. So if Wiki's policy is to accept numbers stated in articles/record company press releases then it's only fair if they accept the 45 million number for Bad now and allow it to be put on Nr 4.

Bad album has generated over 45 Million units in sales.

If Bad really has sold 45 M and if the wikipedia list is something to go by AND if the Bad 25 sales will be added to the sales of Bad, then I totally see Bad officially becoming the second best selling album in the world!

Now to the question, how will sales of Bad 25 be counted - as 4 units? And will they be added to Bad???

i don;t think bad has sold 45 million. at most 36 mill, but if the exagerateed sales of AC/DC and the dark side of the moon are list on wikipedia. we might as well do that, and place bad as the 4th best selling album of all time. i think by the end of all this bad could end up with 40 mill. although i wish bad to sell between 5-1o mill (sigh, one can dream )LET'S just wait and see what happens, maybe this will like adele sales.....i don't i want remind positive, same with the dvd
