The Jackson 5 -- Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and, of course, Michael Jackson -- will be getting props in the form of an "Icon" lifetime achievement award at the BMI Urban Awards, Reuters reports.

The brotherly super-group, which took the '70s pop music scene by storm with hits like "ABC" and "I Want You Back," will not perform at the September 4 show, and Michael hasn't yet RSVP'd to appear, says Reuters.

Last November, Jermaine told BBC 6 Music that plans were in the works for a full-fledged Jackson 5 reunion and tour which would include the King of Pop.

Michael Jackson (http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_272621935.shtml#) continues to spend time in Las Vegas, where he's been recording with producers Akon (http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_272621935.shtml#) and RedOne off and on since spring -- but it's anyone's guess as to when the long-embattled music icon will be coming out with another album. "It's not like it's a secret, it's just that nobody knows," says the super hot RedOne (nee Nadir Khayat).

"When it comes to Michael, I'm not allowed to talk about the recording," he adds. But I can say he's unbelievable, honestly the best that music has ever known, the ultimate star, artist, musician. Every other star I work with, I tell them I'm working with Michael Jackson, and they're like 'Oh, my God!' And when I tell him, he's so humble and polite, he's like, 'Oh, thank you.'"

Those other stars the effervescent Moroccan-Swedish music man is currently working with comprise an amazing roster, including: Shakira (he worked on her "Hips Don't Lie" monster hit and is now helping the sexy (http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_272621935.shtml#) Colombian superstar on her next album), Brandy, Lionel Richie, Enrique Iglesias (http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_272621935.shtml#), Toni Braxton and more. RedOne will also have six or seven songs on the highly anticipated New Kids on the Block "Block" reunion album due next month. (Over the weekend, Donnie Wahlberg denied reports that a Jackson duet would be on the NKOTB album, by the way.)

As far as the challenge of updating the '80s-'90s super group's sound while retaining its essence? RedOne lets us know he avoided thinking in those terms. "We just had fun in the studio and created music -- there was no 'trying,' it was just natural. I'm very melodic, and I'm their fan, too, so working with them was natural for me. The beat is updated, and we took things to the next level. It was just crazy. We worked quick -- like, six songs in six days."

One song, written by Wahlberg, Lady Gaga (a.k.a. Stefani Germanotta) and RedOne "is actually a duet with New Kids on the Block and New Edition, it's called 'Full Service.' And there's another song called 'Big Girl Now,' which is a duet with New Kids and Lady Gaga. The reaction so far from radio people and others is everyone's just crazy about that. Lady Gaga is just blowing huge right now," he adds of the artist, whose "Just Dance" worldwide hit was played on the "So You Think You Can Dance" results show last week. "She's the future of music."

Day 144: MJ the business man... what the media don't tell you

Aim for united front to survive digital evolution

By Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson
Published: August 5 2008 19:41 | Last updated: August 5 2008 19:41

<SCRIPT language=javascript type=text/javascript>function floatContent(){var paraNum = "3"paraNum = paraNum - 1;var tb = document.getElementById('floating-con');var nl = document.getElementById('floating-target');if(tb.getElementsByTagName("div").length> 0){if (nl.getElementsByTagName("p").length>= paraNum){nl.insertBefore(tb,nl.getElementsByTagNam e("p")[paraNum]);}else {if (nl.getElementsByTagName("p").length == 3){nl.insertBefore(tb,nl.getElementsByTagName("p")[2]);}else {nl.insertBefore(tb,nl.getElementsByTagName("p")[0]);}}}}</SCRIPT>The obituaries for the traditional music business have been written and rewritten since digital piracy first began to hit CD sales at the start of this decade.

The same period, however, has witnessed a succession of music-based commercial phenomena, from Apple (http://markets.ft.com/tearsheets/performance.asp?s=us:AAPL)’s iPod digital music players and Disney’s Hannah Montana franchise to the Idol and X Factor television talent shows and, most recently, video games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Star.

While recorded music companies such as Sony BMG have tried to jump on such promising business areas, their share of the value created has so far been insufficient to offset an accelerating decline in their core physical product, the CD.

As the part-owner of a recorded music business, Sony (http://markets.ft.com/tearsheets/performance.asp?s=jp:6758) has shared in this pain, and its decision to merge Sony Music with Bertelsmann’s BMG in 2004 was widely seen as limiting its exposure to such risks.

But as an electronics, games and entertainment conglomerate, Sony has come to the conclusion that the changing nature of the music business presented opportunities for other parts of its business that it could not seize without full control of Sony BMG.

Sony’s defence of its media assets has long been to point to the role they can play in boosting interest in its hardware, and vice versa. Early models of the PlayStation 3 games console, which included Sony’s high-definition Blu-Ray video player, were sold with copies of a Spiderman film from Sony Pictures, for example.

Yet despite having a 50 per cent stake in Sony BMG, the second largest recorded music company, and the Walkman, one of the most established brands in music hardware, Sony has seen Apple seize a dominant share of the legitimate digital music market.

Sir Howard Stringer, Sony chairman and chief executive said by way of explanation on Tuesday: “When you have a joint venture you are negotiating over every point, whether you do a deal with Nokia (http://markets.ft.com/tearsheets/performance.asp?s=fi:NOK1V) or Sony Ericsson”.

Owning 100 per cent “will put us in a better position to take advantage of the music company’s evolution” and to find more connections between Sony’s devices and its content, he said.

That could mean several things for Sony’s various divisions, from music-themed TV programmes to more sweeping use of the PlayStation 3 and PSP handhelds as players for live or recorded music.
In particular, Sir Howard highlighted the opportunities for the PlayStation Network, an online download service currently focused on games for which Sony had signed up almost 10m users by May this year.
Analysts noted that Sony would find some more prosaic cost benefits from combining Sony BMG, which will be renamed Sony Music Entertainment, with its Japanese music business.

It will also sit alongside Sony ATV, the group’s music publishing joint venture with Michael Jackson, although Sir Howard said the two companies would continue to work “in parallel”, as is typical in the music industry, where artists rarely have recording and publishing deals under the same corporate umbrella.

With further declines in recorded music sales predicted before the industry stabilises, Sony will be under pressure to show benefits from the deal quickly.

Analysts said it had managed to avoid paying a premium price, but the valuation was clouded by side deals and by the fact that Sony was the only likely buyer for Bertelsmann’s stake.

However, the valuation will be pored over by industry executives, investment bankers and private equity investors for signs of its implication for two smaller record companies which are still at risk from the industry’s challenges.

Sony’s price “has negative implications for music industry valuations, specifically Warner Music (http://markets.ft.com/tearsheets/performance.asp?s=us:WMG)”, Richard Greenfield of Pali Research warned on Tuesday.

There may be bigger implications for EMI (http://markets.ft.com/tearsheets/performance.asp?s=uk:EMI), however. After taking EMI private in a highly-leveraged deal last summer, Guy Hands’ Terra Firma private equity group has been discreetly sounding out other industry members about its options for reducing its debt burden.
Those could include a sale of recorded music, with Warner the most likely buyer, a merger with Warner or a licensing deal to one of the major music groups in the US.

Sony and Bertelsmann may have staved off the obituary writers for a while, but record companies without electronics, film or games businesses still have work to do.

Sony Corp. became the sole owner of the world's second largest music company in the world Tuesday, putting the company in a position to integrate music with electronics and possibly begin to offer shared rights deals with artists. Sony agreed to buy the 50% stake in Sony BMG (http://javascript<b></b>:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions('Sony%20BMG');) held by German media giant Bertelsmann in a deal valued at $1.2 billion.

Sony BMG will initially pay Bertelsmann about $600 million in cash. Sony Corp. of America will then purchase the remaining interest for about $600 million. As a result, Bertelsmann will receive approximately $900 million in value for its 50% stake plus $300 million of its share of cash on Sony BMG's balance sheet. Sony views this arrangement as a net cash cost of about $600 million as it does not consolidate Sony BMG's cash.

The music company, to be called Sony Music Entertainment, will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corp. of America.

"This acquisition will allow us to achieve a deeper and more robust integration between the wide-ranging global assets of the music company and Sony's products, operating companies and affiliates," said Sony chairman and CEO Howard Stringer. "It enables us to offer a total entertainment experience to consumers."

With a unification of recorded music, music publishing -- Sony/ATV was not part of Sony BMG -- and Sony's film and TV divisions, the company's labels would be in a position to bundle revenue streams into a single package for an artist. The so-called 360 deals generally tie recordings, publishing, merchandising and tour revenue under a single contract; EMI and Warner Music Group (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2119362/Warner%20Music%20Group.html?dataSet=1) have executed a few of these deals but most have come from upstart labels or publishing concerns.

Connecting the different product lines has been a tough sell, however. Sony has struggled, and often flopped, in its attempts to offer consumer products related to its music; the most notable examples are the mini-disc, its online retail operation, the SACD and a recent gift card collection with codes for downloads.

In the four years since Sony and Bertelsmann merged their music divisions, there was considerable jockeying for power at the top of the company. Not a single top executive is still in the job they were assigned when the company was formed in 2004 with Sony's Andrew Lack (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/609563/Andrew%20Lack.html?dataSet=1) at the top. BMG exec Rolf Schmidt (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/2176160/Rolf%20Schmidt.html?dataSet=1)-Holtz, initially chairman of the board, swapped positions with Lack in February 2006 and has been CEO of Sony BMG ever since.

Several of the company's labels -- Columbia, Arista, Epic and J -- have seen significant management changes; prior to the merger, Sony Music was regarded as the most stable of the majors.

At the time Sony and BMG merged, consolidation was seen as the lone path for the majors to survive. Universal (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2008125/Universal%20Pictures.html?dataSet=1) had acquired Polygram five years earlier under Edgar Bronfman Jr (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/50848/Edgar%20Bronfman%20Jr.html?dataSet=1).'s watch, and EMI and Warner started courting in 2000, leaving Sony and BMG as logical partners. But in recent years, the opposite tack has taken hold: Warner Music and EMI were taken private by investors groups, and Vivendi ditched its Universal holdings save for the music company. Sony Music will be the only major owned by a company with interests in film and television.

Bertelsmann, which sold its music publishing unit, BMG Songs, to Universal two years ago, will keep a toehold in the European music marketplace. It takes over a limited number of music catalog assets from Sony BMG in Germany, the U.K., France and Italy. Bertelsmann chairman-CEO Hartmut Ostrowski told employees in a memo that these assets "will form the basis for re-entry into the music rights business."

The parties will continue to share the company's manufacturing and distribution requirements between Sony's manufacturing subsid, Sony DADC, and Bertelsmann's services company, Arvato Digital Services, by extending agreements with Arvato for up to six years.
In his memo to staff, Ostrowski wrote, "The proceeds from the sale of our stake in Sony BMG create new latitude for us to make targeted investments and grow again, including and especially in North America."

No specifics were mentioned in the memo, but one potential target could be U.K. pay TV company BSkyB's 17.9% stake in ITV, Blighty's leading commercial web. Bertelsmann-owned RTL is reportedly eyeing the stake, which is likely to come on the market in the near future following a ruling by the U.K.'s competition commission.
Last year the BMG unit saw revenue fall 27% to $2.25 billion while operating profit dropped 46% to $144 million.
Sony Music now has an active roster that includes Pearl Jam (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/97818/Pearl%20Jam.html?dataSet=1), Alicia Keys (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/581154/Alicia%20Keys.html?dataSet=1), Bruce Springsteen (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/970873/Bruce%20Springsteen.html?dataSet=1), Justin Timberlake (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/53785/Justin%20Timberlake.html?dataSet=1) and Bob Dylan (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/33846/Bob%20Dylan.html?dataSet=1) and the catalogs of Elvis Presley (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/838548/Elvis%20Presley.html?dataSet=1), Michael Jackson (http://javascript<b></b>:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions('Michael%20Jackson'); ) and Miles Davis (http://javascript<b></b>:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions('Miles%20Davis');).

News of the deal was greeted positively by investors. Sony Corp. of America stock rose 3.4% to close at $38.28 while Bertelsmann was up 2.2% to $180.96.

"When it comes to Michael, I'm not allowed to talk about the recording," he adds

*throws confetti on RedOne* LOL! Gotta say I love how the people Michael is working with are respecting his wish to not give out any details. A-mAzingly beautiful. That's respect right there. I'll be honest and say I didn't think it would last this long. *knocks on wood it continues until Michael's ready for details to be known*

'it's not like it's a secret...it's just that nobody knows.' lol...

i gotta take that one down. lol

 It does sound weird the way he said it but in a way it makes complete sense. The way I translated it: It's no secret Michael's working on new music/a new CD, BUT nobody knows exactly what the holey cheese he's doing specifically. lol Either all the peeps he's working with are respecting his wishes and part of that means saying they know nothing when they really do OR MJ is treating this project like Coca-Cola (I think it's Coca Cola) where only a select few have access to small parts of the formula but no ONE person has the entire recipe? And in that way, I guess you can say nobody really knows? :scratch:Okay, I think I confused myself. Moving on. lol

Thanks for the news, Rasta! :flowers:

I see Triumph International, Inc. is also a licensee. That's one of Michael's companies, right? If yes, then I suppose this is another one of his many efforts in addition to working on new music? Someone has definitely been busy. :shifty: It's a nice surprise.

Based on your information, Michael Jackson should be a billionaire several times over, but yet he has these massive loans in the hundreds of millions that he owes. The mortage on Neverland has gone from Fortress to Colony Capital to who knows next after being nearly lost to auction. Something is not adding up.

RedOne: MJ Is "The Best That Music Has Ever Known"

(6-8-2008) There are a lot of speculations in the media when Michael Jackson will be coming out with a new album. Moroccan-Swedish musician RedOne (Nadir Khayat), who has been working on songs for the album, said in an interview:

"It's not like it's a secret, it's just that nobody knows.

When it comes to Michael, I'm not allowed to talk about the recording.

Other starsRedOne is currently working with include Shakira, Brandy, Lionel Richie, Enrique Iglesias, NKOTB, and Toni Braxton and more.

Now tupac, why do you believe he is NOT a billionaire several times over? Rasta is only posting the news that shows MJ is making $$$, even as diligent fans we don't know every revenue stream MJ has. why can't he be a billionaire with loans??? as if he has to pay off everything and not have any loans to live the good life??

...he may have a couple loans in the hundreds of millions...but when you're a 'billionaire'....well ya know

just cause we don't see MJ in Forbes list everyear doesn't mean he is on the brink of destitution.

Just as a point of note, you will find that almost every person of substatial wealth is in some form of "debt". Michael's problems seem mostly to stem from the fact that he doesn't have an liquid assets, most of his money is tied up in investments.

True. Every large business has debts. Only when the debt is larger than the assets that there is a problem. This has never been the case for Michael.
Large businesses keeps debts for tax purposes. The debts are used for the benefit of tax relief. Also, big businses rarely ever use their own money for investments. They usually use the banks money. This means that they are never free from debts.

It is the value of asset that makes them rich or poor, not the amount of debts they owe. MJ is mighty asset rich.:D

tupacvelli4life - Do you really think finance companies would undertake/agree to refinancae and buy Michael's personal mortgages if he was a broke-ass with no repayment options or cashflow? Especially given the volatile nature of the economy..and especially with a number of properties succumbing to the sub prime lending travesty that has affected much of america and europe? do you think colony capital did that out of charity? if he was as broke as the media cries about then MJ would have had to have filed for bankruptcy long years ago. Personal debt especially loans taken for your private property don't always equate to performance of your professional endeavours or vice versa and I truly speak with much conviction out of real experience and knowledge.

Akon Revealed Michael Jackson's Pajamas Experience

Working with a mega star like Michael Jackson will certainly give a unique experience to anyone, including to R 'n' B star Akon, who recently team up to write some songs with the king of pop. To the press, the "Smack That" hit maker said that he had one interesting story with Michael, which got to do with movie and pajamas.

Revealing the story Akon stated that one day he was asked by the king of pop to join him and his kids to watch a movie. The R 'n' B singer was excited and honored with Michael's invitation, but he was left stunned by Michael's choice of wardrobe, who decided to wear a pajamas to the cinema.

"He actually took me to the movies with him, that was an experience," Akon said. "I was like, 'Are you going out like that?' He was in his pajamas and I was waiting to see if he was going to change. He grabs a scarf and puts it around his head. Then, he grabs the kids and puts a scarf around their heads. So I grab a scarf and put it around my head, and off we go."

To be honest, many people wear their PJ's out. that is why Nancy Grace looked like a nut to me in dwelling on the fact that Michael wore his PJ pants to court. Have anyone seen the female shirts that look like nightgown tops? it comes from people wear their night clothes out. My mother was doing this way before Michael. Really, you can not tell it is pjs unless you are just looking for something to talk about.
