Hope this thread doesn't offend anyone. If it does, feel free to delete it. But because of Micheal, we are one happy international and interracial family in here, so I am curious as to how many we are of each ethnicity (i HATE the word "race"). I know Michael was proud to be black, and so am I :) What's your ethnicity?

Of course it doesn't, everything here is just out of curiosity, in good spirits. :) In fact, part of the reason why I started the thread is because I find it ridicilous that we can't talk about ethnicity just because the world is so messed up. I refuse to make it a taboo who I am just because we live in a sick, twisted world. Ever since I was a little kid I never understood grown people's obsession with skin color. I never saw it like that, but I'm proud of my heritage.

I am an American Mutt (ie: Norwegion, British (English), Cherokee Indian, and German) looks white but the blood runs wild! LOL My grandparents and some great grandparents immigrated here prior to 1928- some came here to the new land in the 1800's. My family has MANY different nationalities: some African American, Spanish, Indian, to Phillipino and more. I wish for their lovely dark skin and others for their straight hair while they wish for my bland white boring skin and my long naturally curly down to my butt hair that often looks like a horse's tail when I pull it up into a pony tail on hot summer days! LOL

Anyway.. I look white but there's much more to me than that.

Uh ok, most people I know prefer the more modern term black american, as do I, just like we call people white americans. I don't come from Africa. But maybe you do. As for me, I'm American, and I happen to be black. Please keep the holier-than-thou attitude out of my face if that's what you're trying to accomplish with your little Michael quote at the end. My intentions with this thread are pretty clear by now.

And by the way, since you're so big on quotes, here's another one for ya:

I actually dislike the term African American as well and it's annoying how almost any black person is labeled as a African America. For instance, i've heard black people from England and the West Indies labeled as African American and that's totally incorrect! How can they be African American when they weren't even born here in America?! It's foolish.

Another thing, that African American term seperates us from everyone else. I don't see others being referred to as "European American's" instead of White American's. Why can't we all be called Black American's? I know some people are just trying to be politically correct, but truthfullly I have no direct ties to Africa as my entire family is from the Caribbean. However I am proud of my African roots and heritage as a black person, but why can't I just be labeled American? Why African American?

No no, I prefer to just be called Black or Black American.

Absolutely. If you look at any part of our heritage or identity as a people, i.e. music, it's black music, it's not ****ing African music!! I'm American first, an American who happens to be black. I've thought about what you said too, we are always kind of alienated by calling us Africans first, then Americans second. **** being politically correct. Everyone I know who's black talk about being black, not "African American". I'm starting to wonder about the truthfulness of the person who claimed he was "african american, not black" cause it sounds like something a politically correct white person would say. But what do I know. I don't want to offend anyone with this thread, so I'll leave it at that. I just know after all the shit my people have been through, and especially here in the South (Georgia), I know the importance of being proud to be a black person.

^ I'm not black, in fact I'm at face value a white Australian (but have Italian grandparents on one side and English on another), but I really agree with your posts and the person whose post you quoted about the term "African American". I never thought about it before, but it is divisive and how does anybody actually know at face value what someone's lineage is? It's such a double standard when, as Cinnamon234 said, nobody calls white American's "Eurpean American". However, I think if someone decides to call *themself* African American then it's their call because they would know - but when people assume for someone else, then it's wrong. Thanks for enlightening me about this :)

In fact on TV the day after the memorial (I think), a presenter questioned why his race was stated as "black" on the death certificate ( :( ), she thought the more appropriate term was "African American" and no one was really sure what to say.

So yeah, I thank you both for showing me some insight.

1. no you don't but your acestors do. therefore you have african ancestry and at the same you're an american citizen. that=african american.

2. since you want be technical about it then i guess my mom being light brown isn't "black" yet my indian friend who has dark skin is. now that makes sense.

I agree, I just refer to myself as Black or Black American. The past few generations of my family are American. I have no direct roots to Africa and I have white ancestry as well.

Plus, didn't the world's population descend from Africa anyway? Why do we have to be called African Americans because we're brown or look like Africa's current inhabitants?

Well, I guess I'll just say everyone should refer to themselves however they see fit. :)

* Black and White aren't ethnicities, just generic terms used by the government and institutions to sum up several ethnicities (Italian, Irish, English, Haitian, Kenyan, Jamaican, etc) .

* Asia is the world's largest continent w/ over half the world's population, and strictly speaking, in fact includes the Middle East, such as "Arabic," and India/"Indian."

* Likewise "Latin" covers all of Latin America, which is several countries.

These terms are just generic labels.

God made us like that for a reason...and besides it's nice to see a raibow once in a while...a rainbow of colors like all the MJ fans around the world would be like if we were all at one place ... imagine ..we could even "paint" Michael's image with our skin colors... that would be nice

SJK

Wow and little disproportional are we... I thought things would be more even.

Nevertheless we all know Michael has fans from all around the world and of different colors and I bet that would be proportional.

I get tired of these check boxes telling me to specify which race I am because that is like someone coming up to me asking "Choose, which one do you love more your mother's side or your daddy's?"

I'm mixed with several races but at first glance people think "white" at second glance, don't know. I often get asked "What are you"

I just say, I'm a human, what are you?

That's great for you that you want to show off your political correctness. I was at that stage when I was about 10 years old too. These days I'm confident in my and other people's heritage, so I just have fun with it so we can all be proud and see what a great mix we are.

It's not about political correctness. Try again ;)

I love how people get all bent out of shape and try to boost their own self worth while putting someone else down. Sorry i don't have a cookie for you.

Good because I don't like cookies. Boost my own self-worth while putting someone else down? WTF?
NEWSFLASH: Michael was proud to be black and said so repeatedly! Yet he was all for unity between races and equality! Does that make sense to you? It's about being proud of who you are! Impossible for you maybe, but for the rest of us that is not a contradiction, being for unity and being proud of your heritage. P.S. I never get bent out of shape, especially not over something I read on the internet. Have a good day.

Lol I know exactly how you feel! I am mixed race as well but look more like one parent (and therefore one race) than the other...ppl never guess what race I I really am! And I hate chosing a race when there is no 'mixed race' option...its like they are asking you to choose to ignore one side of who you are...why is there still a need to tick these "race boxes" on forms...what does it matter anyway (we are all part of the same race in the end - the human race)

I mixed Asian and White/Caucasian. Mommy is Filipina and dad is a whitey, haha.

Thats what I am too!
I was born and grew up in Australia...but my mother is from the Phillipines and my dad is white (with German, Russian, American, Jewish and Middle Eastern ancestory)...

I'm a Black American. But the kid is so mixed I look White or Hispanic. I remember being a little boy and when people would ask about my race I would say I was black, and they would call me a liar. They used to say I was White, and I used to get so upset about it, I swear!! lol...it was silly of me to get mad but I just hated that no one believed me!

I am very mixed so it doesn't bother anymore. My Mom's biracial (Half Black - Half White) and my Dad is mixed with Black, Native American, White, and Puerto Rican. Now people I grew up with know I'm black but others just assume i'm Latino. :) I'll never escape that, but who cares? I'm content with who I am, and I love all races and actually have pride in my mixed heritage for the fact that my blood is made up of so many different cultures.

how does that make you black?

doesnt that mean u r no more black than u r white.

so why call urself black, and ignore the other parts..

Well my Dad's 50% black, so is my Mom. My Mom's 50% White and my Dad is only 25% white. My Mother is bi-racial and my Father isn't. His mother was half black, half white. His father was half black, part Puerto Rican and part Native American. Well even if I was just as Black as White, wouldn't that be an Obama-esque case of Bi-Racial identity or similar to it (many Bi-Racials within a Black mixture tend to say they are black, while some just say Bi-Racial there is a huge majority that will say Black)?

I technically have more "Black Blood" than "White Blood" so I kind of ran with the majority. My Mother identified as Black and so did my Father, now so do I. However on many occassions I will just say i'm mixed. I'm a mut. lol...

1. You saw The Dark Knight, good for you.

2. Yes I may have African ancestry way back but I can't trace my roots. I'm fine with that, as far as I'm concerned I'm an American. A black American. I got nothing to do with Africa.

3. I can say what I want too.
I totally agree.

It's a touchy subject because some people always want to defend what they are, even though there's no reason for that... we are all human after all. :)
My husband is white South African with a mixed heritage of English, Norwegian and Dutch. Even though his skin is white, to me he will always be African. He was born and raised there, so I will definitely not call him by any politically correct term (like Caucasian).
That's why someone from the US will always be American in my eyes, regardless of their skin colour.

All my black friends (British and African citizens) want to be called "black". They are not ashamed or offended. Why should they? It's what they are. Nothing wrong with that. :)

2 cents worth. america is an immigrant country bar the indians so the terms african amercian is just saying where your ancestors came from. same as u get italian americans or irish americans.nothing to do with having anything to do with that country.continant on a personal level. end of the day everyone comes from africa they just have different ancestors who travelled out to different parts of the globe from africa thousands of years ago

I reluctantly chose white cause i suppose most people in this part of the world are Caucasian, but like someone recently pointed out i'm a lot 'darker' than they expected from someone of my origin. Must be cause of my momma's skin tone. I've actually been placed from anywhere in Persia till Spain and probably some other countries too. People still can't seem to decide if my eyes are green or blue, but i've never really seen them blue, they've always been green as far as i was concerned. The safest choice would have been 'other' cause i am peculiar in many ways, not just in appearance.

I chose 'other'... I couldn't choose between black or white :tease:

Okay... seriously now... "White" is the ethnic colour I have though I 'tan' really easy so...

Talking about 'ethnics' now... A bodyguard once remarked that I do have a REAL 'black soul' for being 'white' :cheeky:

I do NOT think in terms of colours though more in character and aura feel ;D
