Do we really have camels walking on our beaches? :shifty:
And reghead121 is about to experience her first Aussie summer. How do we stop her from.... dying? :cheeky:

OMG you really did just post that! LMAO! :D
Yes, I will need advice about this though. I am from the frozen beer tundra known as Wisconsin... the hottest it gets in Milwaukee in summer generally is in the low 90's F (like 32C or a tad warmer). Yes, I know...that's it. But to us it's really roasting at that temp! So I think come summer...I will fry... :bugeyed

Well for starters.. does your house have aircon? Because if it doesn't.. :bugeyed
The summers are getting hotter and hotter, so this year's just gonna be ugghhh
I lived in Mt Isa for 3 months..and god, walking out of an aircon building there was like standing in front of a car exhaust.
Awesome thread! and yeah there's a famous camel ride touristy thing over in Western Australia up in Broome.
oh and reg you're reaaalllly gonna feel the summer heat  hot days are good for getting some mates over for a barbie and crackin out a few stubbies and stickin your feet in the esky  especially if you've had a few too many chardies. :drunk:
Speaking of iconic aussie stuff... I'm going on a 14 day trip up the spine of our little island in Sept. We're starting in Melb and busin our way up to Adelaide then to Coober Pedy to stay underground one night and check out the Opal mines, then we'll be heading up to Uluru to see the big rock and Kings Canyon and then crossing over to the Alice. Then we'll be going right up to Tennett creek and the devil's marbles and from there we'll go to Katherine and Kakadu before finishing in Darwin I just can't wait!!!
So which state/ city are our aussies mates here from?

Okay you all are totally freaking me out about summer.... :bugeyed
Well... the people I'm staying with don't turn the air on until it's like 100F (37C)... Which means I'm GONNA ROAST. I have very long and thick hair...I may have to cut it to make it a little cooler on me (i'm going to seriously cry though). Yep, I'm living with pissheads so there will be plenty of beer and barbies going on. They have a pool...thank god...but have been telling me horror stories about how it gets to hot to even swim. :mello:
I'm getting my digs in while I can...teasing them about how it's not that cold right now. I still go for walks outside in t-shirts when it's like 10-12C out...just because it freaks them out LOL. (and because winter where I come from can be easily -6F (-21C). Come summer I'm going to get so much crap... must tease them while I still can....
You all have like 50 spf sunscreen here yeah? Because I'm also midwestern pale with freckles....and I don't really tan. Ever.
It feels like that cozzie? *cries*
LJ, your trip sounds really fab. Take tons of pics!
I'm in the Campbelltown/Bradbury area here, in NSW.
oh yeah if it gets super hot the pool doesn't really do well with coolin you down... especially if it's not shaded either.
If you're lucky the people you're living with will know how to keep their house coolish.
I don't use the aircon until it's predicted to be a scorcher (sorta like the 37C scenario)... and my mum can't handle the heat so we do things like cover the house windows to trap cold air in and hot air out. Appliances like the tellie and other heat producing stuff aren't allowed to go on until the cool change hits.... so those days if I want to go online I gotta charge the laptop and take it outside into the shade and use the wireless
Definately Slip, Slop, Slap  we're right under the hole in the ozone  so we burn easily.
I walk around in t-shirts all winter too  I don't feel the cold so it's a great laugh watching everyone else stare LOL!

Damn.. I grew up in NZ and I used to be one of those "quit being a wuss, it's not cold!" people. Oh how things change. Now I have europeans come and tease me about feeling cold.
Reghead, yep it feels like that on the really hot days. Make sure you stock up on sunscreen, chapstick and zinc (skin coloured, for the love of god :P) because if you don't tan then you're going to get RED!
Ohhhh L.J I'm jealous. JEALOUS! I really wanna check out uluru and all these places you're going. Are you climbing up uluru?
And I'm in Geelong.. we have creepy statues on our beaches
http://www.aiec.hu/userfiles/Image/Geelong%20Beach.jpg
 aawww the bollard people  ... check out the tits on that one nearest the camera.. :ermm:
I wont be climbing Uluru no  the local aboriginal groups have requested that the area remain sacred and treated as such and they're not too keen on folks climbing the rock so I'm going to respect their wishes in regards to that.
We came to Geelong for our snorkelling day trip this year... took 75 students to the safety beach in the background of that photo you posted cozzie and snorkelled around under the walkway before leaping over to the otherside and snorkelling around back to shore. Kids had a blast. Also did a 3 day trip over to Sorrento and Pt Nepean with snorkelling and moutain bike riding ^_^ (oh yeah... I love my job :D ).
So snaps of Pt Nepean (one side of the small entrance into Port Phillip bay (with Melbourne being the main port of call in the bay).

Remains of an old cattle jetty which was used by the old Quarantine that existed at Point Nepean..... oh yeah our beaches are beautiful ^_^

lol @ this thread
im from brizzy and yes summer is so hot but u gotta love it :)
ur gonna have an awesome time reg, and dont worry about cutting ur long thick hair coz it sounds beautiful and all u need to do is put it in a high pony tail
Reghead121
23-07-2009, 12:29 AM
Thanks Sharlene. Yeah, I will probably attempt to put it into buns, braids or ponytails and see how it goes.
It's over 1/2 of the way down my back so it can be a pain but it is really nice and I don't want to chop it unless I'm really miserable.
I wonder if my blonde will be super beach blonde by December...
Hey speaking of December.... Christmas is going to be ODD for me! No snow? no sleds? no snowmen? Can you still run around in a santa hat? Or would that be weird?
PS: since this is the Aussie thread....anyone try the "new' vegemite yet? Anyone else even LIKE the regular? All my friends thought I'd hate it but I LOVE IT. The new one isn't bad either...but I prefer the original because it's saltier.

You will also need the beach...and of course US MJJC FANS!

LOL yeah definately getting on the air con bandwagon. My friends don't turn it on until it's like 37C... I'm going to have an problem with that! I told them to expect to see me dragging my own window air conditioner down the driveway and into the house! :bugeyed
Oh yeah beach for sure. I've been running around Bondi..Bronte..Tamarama...
Actually I'll tell you... I landed at Sydney International on May 1st, went through customs, got my bags, met my friends, got in the car - and went directly to Bondi, no stopping on the way! I just couldn't help myself... :D
It's beautiful, smells so oceany, all the sounds of the surf and I discovered they also have hot lifeguards :clapping:
You all should come up to Bondi in summer...how fun would that be, a bunch of MJJC members running around in the sand :D

A lot of fans from Australia seem to be from the Melbourne area...maybe I should think of this in reverse? Come summer, maybe I should jump on a train...if one goes all the way there. Any good beaches in the Melbourne area? :D
8701girl
23-07-2009, 01:45 AM
yeh there are some good beaches in melb...well i think there are lol
Well why dont u do a aussie road trip sort of thing?
Like go all over australia and meet all the mjjc fans , in each state :) ?
Reghead121
23-07-2009, 01:47 AM
I wish I could, that would be so cool. Unfortunately I'm working odd jobs, saving extra money for school, so I can't spend it all. If I could only win the lottery!!
But I do know that my friends and I are doing a road trip this summer...albeit a small one. We are undecided. I want to see the 12 Apostles/southern coast... they want the Seaworld/Gold Coast. What do you all think?
8701girl
23-07-2009, 01:51 AM
What bout one day u go to southern coast, then the next day go 2 gold coast/seaworld. At least everyone will be happy :)

I don't know about the Melbourne area, but here in Geelong we're 20 minutes away from the great ocean road.. one of the most beautiful drives in Australia! And yes you'll see the 12 apostles there.
There's a beach every 2 minutes, but it's cold.. bloody cold! Everytime we'd stop off at one of the beaches, 5 minutes later we'd all be running back to the car to get back to the heater
Same goes for the 12 apostles, we couldn't keep our eyes open long enough to see them properly because of the cold! And this was in summer :bugeyed
BUT.. if I had to choose between gold coast and great ocean road, I'd pick great ocean road. I'm not a big city person, and I love nature.
Oh and a tip.. do NOT go on a tour. Make sure you have a friend that can drive and rent a car. I went on one of the tours and OH MY GOD they don't shut up. Not for one second.

You know I've heard about that, but some Japanese people that I lived with went to Uluru and climbed it, they didn't seem phased by it.
So do most Aussies respect the Aborigines' wishes? Because I've lived with heaps of international students and they didn't seem to care.
PS: since this is the Aussie thread....anyone try the "new' vegemite yet? Anyone else even LIKE the regular? All my friends thought I'd hate it but I LOVE IT. The new one isn't bad either...but I prefer the original because it's saltier.
Now that's impressive. Most people who haven't grown up with it hate it! I haven't tried the new one but I LOVE the old one. You know I've seen videos of Americans who bought some vegemite and spread it on dry toast like it was nutella! Ewwww....

Yeah I heard about that too...that you aren't supposed to climb on Uluru any more. If I went I think I'd respect their wishes. Sort of like not walking on the indian burial grounds in the US maybe.
Yesssssss, I scoped out videos on youtube before I came here, and I saw that and thought, oh it will be gross. But they definately were putting too much on! My friends taught me right, so I didn't cake it on. They are corrupting me.... There are days now where I just CRAVE veggie on toast. I'm going to have to mail a box of the stuff back to the US.
I never even had Nutella until I got here. I know we don't have Veg in the US, maybe we have Nutella and I just never noticed. That stuff is really good as well.
Any other secret aussie foods I need to know about? lol

I'm sure there's a train from SYD to MEL but you could always grab a cheap flight down too. If you've got time and $$$ I'd reccommend driving it and checking out places along the way totally worth it.
As for good beaches down in VIC, yeap! If you go the East side of Melbourne you've got Sorrento and if you go the West side... head out to Geelong and check out Torquay or Anglesea.
But I do know that my friends and I are doing a road trip this summer...albeit a small one. We are undecided. I want to see the 12 Apostles/southern coast... they want the Seaworld/Gold Coast. What do you all think?
Summer road trip...
You'll need to work out whether you want to just go to the beach and some amusement parks.... or whether you want to see some great natural stuff.
I did the Great Ocean Road at the end of last summer... totally reccommend it.
We did a 4 day trip on the Great Ocean Road and we tented it. Stayed in a Apollo Bay and a place called Laver's Hill which is like 30 minutes out of Apollo Bay.
The beach at Apollo bay is awesome, we also went to the Otway Ranges and did the tree-top walk (Beautiful!!) We camped under koalas in the Otway's one night as well. Went and saw the apostles, also check out the glow worms one night in the Melb Gully forest (2 minutes from Laver's Hill).
The road is incredible and there's so much stuff to do and great places to eat along the way as well.

OH you big WUSS..... it's not cold whatchu talkin bout willis? I spent the whole afternoon swimming in Apollo Bay.
Torquay (and more specifically Jan Juc) is probably the most visited beach for me.
But I agree Don't do a tour... waste of money... if you stop at most of the popular spots there's a bucketload of information. (for example at the start of the road there's all the information that explains how the Great Ocean Road was built by returning veterans from the great war.

Don't even get me started lady! Don't blame me, I've been a QLD'er for the past 6 years... I'm used to car exhaust weather!
And actually while I was freezing on the great ocean road, there were people SURFING! Arghhhhh
At least they were good eye candy :innocent:

Well we can't forget about Timtams of course. If you haven't had your first "timtam orgasm" yet, then get onto it! Bite the 2 ends off a timtam and use it as a straw to suck up hot coffee.. yum yum yummm.
And yes, I'm quite proud of how sexual my explanation ended up sounding :cheeky:

Yeah exactly, we just aren't all in agreement yet whether to do all natural sites or amusement type stuff as well.
Your 4 day trip sounds excellent! I am going to have to read this to them...as a way to puff up my side of the arguement! ;D
Last weekend we did a little day trip to Kiama and it was a really great little town right on the coast. We had fish and chips, saw a lighthouse, went to a fair.... Was really nice.
A pic I took from there: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1929354&l=2f5c6d9b54&id=625934420

I haven't had one yet but I definately know about them. I was in the store a few weeks ago looking for Graham Crackers (which I now know you all don't have here...) and my friend was down the isle a little ways helping me look. She then shouts to me down the isle...you had a timtam yet?
And me...friggin' American that I am...shouted back... What's a timtam?? :mello:
Like FIVE random people in the isle all stopped and looked at me!!! I was like.... WHAT? lol :bugeyed
Then two of those random people went on to tell me how good they are, how to eat them, and to make sure I try them. So yeah.. I know about them lol.
Well done on turning the chocolate treat into a sexual reference haha :swoon:

LMAO.. well if I was in that isle I would have done the exact same thing  that's like me going to the states and asking "what's a twinkie?".. I'm sure I'd get the same reaction :bugeyed
Well you've GOT to try them. I recommend the "double coat' tim tams. They're exactly the same as the original timtams but with a better coating of chocolate around the outside mmmm
And actually the double coat ones hold together better when you do the... orgasm.
I'll stop :cheeky:

:rollin: oh you totally gotta go a TimTam (super popular in Dutyfree with people leaving Aus).
Other great Aussie foods you gotta have a go at are:
Lamingtons mmmmm
If there's a fergeson plarre in NSW... get yourself a meat pie ^_^
Get yourself a piece of Pavlova!! oh yum!!
At a barbie be sure to try marinated kangaroo if it's on offer
Get yourself some homemade ANZAC bikkies... or I like the Dick Smith ones if you're going store bought.

Tim tam orgasm is basically this...
Take a timtam, bite off 2 corners opposite each other, dip one of the corners in coffee and put the other one in your mouth. Now suck up the hot coffee and it'll travel up the middle of the biscuit where the chocolate mousse is.
Drink it and then put the timtam in your mouth FAST coz it'll collapse. The double coat ones hold a bit better, but they'll still collapse pretty quickly.
Here's someone doing it (my coffee cup isn't that posh though)
http://blogs.westword.com/cafesociety/timtam%20005%20(Small).jpg
Truth be told, we never wanted Russell Crowe to begin with

Come on ozzies admit it! You do turn the aircon on above 31C ish :) you do :) or go to a mall :) or to a pool or to a beach :)
Reghead, my tips
1. aircon or some kind of a fan :)
2. always carry water with you and drink water even when you dont feel you are thirsty..buy one of those fancy plastic reusable bottles (I will help you get one) and use that
3. wear sunscreen, less clothes (you will see a Tshirt and shorts are more than fine) and remember - when the sun is out always walk in the shadows..
and oh yes one lesson I learnt ...if you go to the beach dont be tempted to walk barefoot in the sand....on a hot day the sand can actually burn your feet...guess why most of us are running into the water..cos the sand is hot hot hot :)
oh wear hats! Lifesavers :)

Great thread---welcome to Australia.
Definately hats/sunnies/and loads of sunscreen.
I'm a Queenslander---but have seen LOTS of Australia.
If you can---don't miss---The Great Barrier Reef.
Fraser Island--very unique.
Great Ocean Road.
I have been across Australia on the Indian Pacific train--very different scenery.
At present, up the QLD coast---we have whale watching---that's awesome.
The Gold Coast itself is "different" to the other beaches, beautiful.
And if you want to escape winter---GO NORTH !!
Australia is sooooooooo diversified--in scenery.
As for the Fun Parks----GOOD but so similar to Disneyland/ Universal Studios/etc.
Have fun---enjoy Australia.

i definately put the air con on ALL the time in summer, i'm a pussy when it comes to Aussie heat...i burn like bacon at breakfast time.
To all those in Queensland...i salute you....i had trouble coping with the QLD heat in June..(winter).....and in Feb i melted like mozzarella on a pizza.
hmmmmmm....why is there a reoccurring "food" theme here *scratches fat head*
The Great Ocean Road ........ glorious. Love it. My family has so much history there.
To the person who is from Geelong....i fell in love with the place...until if fell on my face crossing the street to get to a shopping centre that wasn't actually open yet and split my knee open to the bone.....so anyway, on my day spent in Geelong i found out you have really nice ... hospital staff...haha But seriously, it's a beautiful place.
And New Zealand.....i haven't been there yet but sooo many tourists favour NZ over Australia because of the natural beauty and adventure sports (bungee jumping, river rafting, canyon swinging, black water caving, giant rubber ball rolling??, jet boat riding ) all in close proximity of each other. Australia is just as beautiful if not more *sniff's proudly* but you have to travel so darn far to get anywhere. And why does New Zealand remind me a bit of Canada....i've only seen photo's but perhaps its the snow, the lakes, the scenery....hmmmmmmm i have to travel more.

Great thread---welcome to Australia.
Definately hats/sunnies/and loads of sunscreen.
The Gold Coast itself is "different" to the other beaches, beautiful.
And if you want to escape winter---GO NORTH !!
Australia is sooooooooo diversified--in scenery.
Have fun---enjoy Australia.
Dawn
Yep, getting a LOT of the sunscreen, hats etc so I definately will be doing that. Yeah there is a good chance we may go north, I'm losing the arguement so far, but I know it's beautiful no matter which way we go. It definately is diverse. Thanks Dawn :)
So we won't see any drunken ramblings?
Damn...
No!!! LMAO! I am not embarrassing myself by typing while blitzed...no way :tease:
Get yourself some homemade ANZAC bikkies... or I like the Dick Smith ones if you're going store bought.
Now this one I haven't heard of before. I totally have to check it out! Can you describe them at all?
always carry water with you and drink water even when you dont feel you are thirsty..buy one of those fancy plastic reusable bottles (I will help you get one) and use that
3. wear sunscreen, less clothes (you will see a Tshirt and shorts are more than fine) and remember - when the sun is out always walk in the shadows..
if you go to the beach dont be tempted to walk barefoot in the sand....on a hot day the sand can actually burn your feet...guess why most of us are running into the water..cos the sand is hot hot hot :)
Yeah I know water will be important. I got one of those cute little blue water bottles with a built in filter :D
Oh yes, I've learned the hard way about walking barefoot in hot sand when I went to Clearwater Beach, and I also learned how fast you can burn by walking along with just your feet in the water.....
Hence... I have a pic of my SECOND DEGREE sunburn from Clearwater Beach here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/reghead121/2703896618/ :bugeyed

Yes, you and me both...I just absolutely FRY so this is going to be one hell of a summer for me...
Haha...because you all have foods we just don't ever see in America. And I must try them all...I'm so curious. I finally had Rissoles (sp?) for dinner tonight and they were wonderful. I'm sure there are other things here I don't know about yet. I want to try it all.
Yeah the Great Ocean Road really sounds wonderful!
Thanks for all the tips you all and definately keep them coming!!! I want to experience as much as I can, even if it's just locally. I'm still fascinated by this whole driving on the other side of the road thing, confuses the heck out of me.... :agree:

Really...I so need to get my friends in the US on that, see if they can find the Timtams.
Nope, Veg isn't banned in the US. There are a few select stores that import it in. It's weird... you can bring it in and so can companies, it just can't be MADE in the US...something about it's against the law to add folic acid to food or something. But they don't ban it if it's done outside the country and carried in.
Either way I'm still sending a box of the stuff to my dad's before I leave. I want a lifetime supply.... :)
And Vargak.....YES I so want to see the Reef.... dunno if I'll have the money for it but I'd love to. Depends on how fast I save this $$$ for paramedic school.

000cozzie000
25-07-2009, 04:05 AM
They sell it at coles and woolies. It's kind of like the NZ version of vegemite.. kiwis don't really eat vegemite much in NZ.
They're pretty similar but marmite is stronger and it doesn't have an after taste like vegemite does. Actually international peeps tend to prefer marmite, I don't know why. I gave both to try to some Europeans, they spat out the vegemite and finished off the marmite... hmmmmm

and talking about food I must say...the best strawberries of the world are in Oz! Take it from me I have had them across Europe and Asia...Oz Strawberries - QLD ones to be precise rulez :)
No, I am not taking books...I will be buying them along the way..I need space...I need to buy books in Germany...and in London.....so I am not allowed to take books.. :( As a matter of fact I am not allowed to buy any more books (but what the heck.) there is hardly any space left at home to store them....me and my book addiction is famous....I might need to seek professional help...
as a matter of fact I am already eyeing on 2 English copies of The Dancing the Dream and 2 German copies...that is already an extra 5kgs...those books are heavy....
Instead I will bore myself on these flights with catching up on movies, sleep, listen to music and try to "develop my artistic abilities" (those non-abilities - eg doodle :)

Totally agree with the stupidity of the judging... havent watched one through in aaages.
I'm sick of judges letting poor singers through, never making any comments about musicality or vocal ability, and the way the show praises the mediocre for being accessable or havign a "touching" story... and not to mention the Vile Sandilands...
That said Kyle shouldnt be fired over the rape thing. Clearly the mother is the one who shouldnt even be able to own a dog, let alone be responsible for the emotional well being of her severely violated daughter for needs a lot of love :(

YESS!!! KYLE'S BEEN DUMPED FROM AUSTRALIAN IDOL!
Starsecret, I absolutely think the mother's to blame for what happened, but Kyle and Jackie O weren't exactly innocent in all of this. They saw what the questions were going to be, they approved it and Kyle kept questioning her even after she admitted she was raped. Lets be honest, Vile doesn't have the best track record, he's one of the nastiest people in aus show business. This was just the last straw IMO..

Can't believe how massively the Australian media is blowing out of proportion what happened with Kyle and Jackie O!!
If it's anyone's fault, it's the producer's of their show, they're supposed to do their research on guests before they come on the show...

I think it's bullcrap that Kyle was fired from Idol. He was funny as hell on that show. He didn't really do anything wrong. How was he supposed to know that girl got raped? And he didn't even ask the question, the girl's mother did. We are getting very tight-arsed in this country. First Matty Johns is fired from the Footy Show and Channel Nine for having group sex, now Kyle and Jackie-O have been fired for an incident that happened on their radio show that they had no control over. With the huge uproar over this incident you'd think the girl was actually raped on the show by Kyle. It's ridiculous.
000cozzie000
04-08-2009, 05:38 AM
I don't think Kyle and Jackie O have been fired. From what I heard, Austereo is forcing them to put a 7 second delay on their show... Kyle's against it and is refusing to do the show. He's just having a tanti
Everyone on the show had a chance to review the questions before they went on air. Even if the girl wasn't raped, it's unacceptable to force her to answer questions about her sex life and drug use in front of the country. And Kyle did question her also, he asked her "have you have any other sexual experiences?" after she admitted she was raped.
..........In the wake of sowballing criticism it has failed to curtail the worst of Sandilands boofhead routine on air, Austereo bosses are believed to have insisted on enforcing a seven-second delay on his return to the breakfast program this week.
But the star, "angry and frustrated" by the backlash, resisted the move, telling management he would be "unable to perform his duties on-air".
Reacting to the refusal, Austereo announced it was putting both presenters and the show's production staff "into recess until we have completed an across-the-networks review of the principals and protocols of our interaction with our audience."
The station's spin went up a notch yesterday with fill-in host Chris Page, regarded in the industry as a wannabe Kyle, paying a saccharine homage to Sandilands.
The Vaseline-lensed approach glossed over claims that last week's stunt amounted to child abuse, instead revisiting audio of Sandilands giving out prizes to charity, then reading his wedding vows to his pop singer wife Tamara Jaber.
The couple are understood to have flown back into Sydney from Queenstown, New Zealand, on Sunday afternoon and are now bunkered down in their Hunters Hill rented home.
Jackie O is rumoured to be hiding out in her Wattamolla retreat, near Kangaroo Valley...

Kyle was/ and never wil be funny. He is an ignorant fool, who needs someone to slap him!
I didn't agree with the Matty Johns firing... what he does in his own privacy is his own business.
Kyle though shouldn't have continued with the interview after she admitted to being raped... that's just poor business/unprofessional on his behalf.

Any of you like thunderstorms? Because I love them....when does THAT season start here? During spring I hope :) One of my friends I'm staying with is terrified of storms so there will be both ends of the reaction scale going on at the same time in this house...her freaking out and me hanging off the balcony taking pictures LOL!

The federal government wants to impose new taxes that would see alcohol and cigarette prices go up and they want to give vouchers to people in poor communities so they can buy healthy foods. What a scam!
The only legitimate reason for the government to raise or introduce new taxes is to increase revenue. Anything else is a corruption. Taxes that are aimed at discouraging people from buying certain products is a total corruption of the market and our freedom to make our own purchasing decisions. Our purchasing decisions should be based on market prices and our own feelings, whether positive or negative, towards the product. They should not be based on artificial pricing created by taxes or subsidies. That's a total corruption.
Buying cigarettes or alcohol should be my choice and my choice should not be influenced by the government. Do they think young people wont go to extraordinary lengths to get these taboo products that are so frowned upon by the authorities in their lives? They'll pay anything to get their hands on the stuff. Ask a drug dealer. They can charge whatever they want and high school and uni students will buy it because they want to be rebels and partake in something that every authority figure in their life tells them to stay away from.
No more taxes on alcohol and cigarettes!!

I don't even care that I am double posting...
And yes I've had a couple wines in celebration of MJ's life and funeral before posting this (it's okay -- I'm double checking for spelling errors before hitting 'submit reply' lol)...
~and just to clarify....I did not watch even a second of the funeral because the 3rd anniversary of my own stepmum's motorcycle death is in two days and it's just too hard to watch yet another funeral, so I'm really upset right now....~
But I just wanna say -
That I think MJ is the most influential, positive, completely inspirational musician I've ever seen. Seriously.
I wish he'd been treated better in life...and in death, than he was. I know deep down he just craved the normalcy that the rest of us take for granted. And I'm sorry it was so hard for him.
I wanted to just say -
Thank you Michael. Not only for giving up pretty much your entire life to make us happy.... but for showing it's okay to be the art geek...or music geek or whatever geek.... that smarts isn't so.... uncool. You made me realize that it was okay.
And there is a tiny little piece of my heart reserved just for you... right next to my stepmum...
Thanks for teaching me that it is okay..
To just be me.
:)
-Misty
... and now that I'm re-reading that to make sure I am typing straight after the wine... what I wrote... is making me cry. Aw, hell this is just so very unfair :(

Okay Aussies I have another question! I woke up this morning to the 'big red sky' and was like....what in the world?!...holy cow!!!!
*ran and grabbed the camera*
So, does Australia get a lot of these dust storms? Is it usually just a regional thing? Do they last long??? Where the heck did it come from??
All I know...is my throat HATES it :mello:

The dust storm has reached Brisbane now. I don't think it's as bad as Sydney. But if I look outside my window there's a definite orange haze in the sky. I can't even see the city skyline. And you can really smell the dust in the air. It's horrible. But also kind of cool.

Yuck that sounds pretty gross too. I'll have to look that up and read about it :)

Yeah I'll take all the suggestions I can get. I really want to try everything, at least once to see if I like it.
Well, I've learned you all eat a LOT of lamb compared to the US. I've found I love it so I have no problems with it! I promised my friends I'm going to cook a real all-american thanksgiving dinner in November...but I'm worried at the lack of TURKEYS! Hopefully I'll fine one. Then I get to try hunting down ingredients for stuffing, the cranberry sauce, ingredients for the pumpkin pie (thank might not be easy...) and so on.
I've tried vegemite (both old and new) and I just absolutely LOVE it. Tried double coated TimTams as well...and OMG - I'm shipping some home! I tried a cookie that I cannot remember the name of now...but the soldiers used to eat them? They reminded me of oatmeal cookies but a little sweeter.
Had Cherry Ripes... those are really good.
I noticed you all can make a sandwhich out of ANYTHING...and you hold your utensils differently than we do in the US.
My friends drink more tea.... oh and the coffee here is all instant (like just add water instant). So it took me a while but I found a real drip coffee pot, then had my folks mail me some Folgers drip coffee so they could try it here :D
And I noticed you all don't tip when you eat out? Is that the norm here? And at fast food type places you don't throw the stuff away, you leave it on the table? We clean it up and put it in the bin in the US. First time we ate at a fish & chips shop my friends were like...what are you busting tables now? haha ;)

You should be able to find turkey in November. Turkey here is a Christmas thing cos we don't do Thanksgiving and by November, frozen ones are available.
I love the taste of Lamb but I don't like to eat it cos I picture the lamb! :( It's a big meat here. They have ads on for Australia Day in Jan telling people to eat lamb! lol
The Cookie you refer to would be an ANZAC buiscut. I love them!!
Cherry Ripes rock!! :punk:

Yeah frozen will be fine, you just thaw the bird out before hand. I wonder if I should cook later in the day than I would in the US because of the heat (being a different season and all)?
For anyone interesting in knowing...the Thanksgiving Dinner I'm doing for my pals is going to consist of: The bird (lightly coated in margarine and seasonings so it comes out golden brown with a couple slices of pineapple on top), turkey cranberry stuffing cooked inside the bird (and a couple garlic bulbs cooked in there too cuz I LOVE garlic...), homemade thick dough noodles, homemade mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, homemade turkey mushroom gravy, cranberry sauce, steamed veggies, homemade pumpkin pie with fresh made whip cream and at least two bottles of a nice red wine. Not bad hey? :D
Ah, don't think of the fuzzy little animal lol. Lamb is so yummy...
That's the one...Anzac buscuit... they are so good! Yay you like the cherry ripes too yeah? :D
Yeah most of them are. I did find that Gloria Jeans has drip coffee at the store so I've started trying them out. My father sent me a big bag of pure Tanzanian coffee and my friends here just love it. It's very strong, so one of my friends actually adds hot water to hers lol.
OMG I know I love coffee shops. I have had the other two once or twice but stick to Gloria Jeans cuz the others I can get when I'm at home. I had this drink the other day, it was coffee and white choco, with coconut blended in and either ice or a tad bit of ice cream....I must find out what that is again...it was amazingly good. Very naughty - but very good ;)
I'll have to keep an eye out for tip jars....you always do it in America so it feels like you are being mean if you don't...it's weird.
Yeah, I wondered if some do it because they are just brought up to clean up their mess? The other day we went to DFO in Strathfield and had sushi in the food court and everyone I was with just left their stuff. Out of habit I started cleaning up the table. I can't help it...it only takes a second and it's done...
So has anyone tried either crocodile or kangaroo? Is it just that people from other countries thing you all eat it? Ok probably... lol. But can you actually eat it if you want to try it? I'm wondering what it's like. I've had things like duck, goose, elk, bison, venison (deer) and moose... but I wonder what croc and roo taste like....
You should be able to find turkey in November. Turkey here is a Christmas thing cos we don't do Thanksgiving and by November, frozen ones are available.

It's funny how you guys went from the weather to cereal lol
Yeah we sort of go all over in this thread :) I keep coming up with random questions during my time here. I can't help it lol.
Like.... why do they call shrimp prawns here.... I find many things have different names or are prounounced different. It's the favorite teasings between me and my friends lol. I say tomato a certain way or oregano a certain way and I hear giggles lol. But then my friend will say... i feel like putting on my thongs.. and I start giggling (because thongs are g-strings in America not sandals...) :cheeky: It's all very amusing.

1x Packet Mint Slices
1x Packet Oreo cookies
1/2 can condensed milk (or more if needed)
Coconut shavings
Put oreos and mint slices in food processor until it becomes a fine powder (or put in a bag and crush them). Add condensed milk to form a dough, roll into little balls and roll into coconut. Refrigerate until hard.

I love phrases like pub crawling (vs. bar hopping in the states) or saying something like.... this computer is really giving me the sh*ts! Yes, I just caught the Footy Show tribute. It was totally unexpected. While it was comical, it still brought a tear to my eye.... much to my surprise it was quite lengthy featuring Remember the Time, Smooth Criminal and Thriller. It's weird some theaters are selling tickets today...some tommorrow...and some are waiting until Sunday. The theater right by me, that is already selling them, even is doing one special screening on the 28th at 9pm...the evening before it's supposed to be released here. Well you've lost 7kg so I'll bow down to you master :agree: I was in Sydney last week as a tourist, walking around the whole time and was too busy to eat properly so the weight just fell off. But now I'm back home with a stocked up fridge and pantry, nothing too unhealthy, but can easily over eat.
You should have told me you were dieting, so then I would have stopped recommending double coat tim tam orgasms and mint slice sweets :bugeyed
You freaked me out so I quickly went and checked villiage cinemas site again, but tickets aren't on sale yet. Never tried gold class, always seemed a bit too posh for my liking. I like a nice packed, rough and dirty cinema :P

Now now, any weight loss when you are trying is amazing...so there! :cheeky:
Yeah walking around Sydney for a few days...you'll shed a few kilos that way. You end up walking more distance than you think you do. I'm always really exhausted after a full day in the city.
Yeah I easily overeat as well.... I really try hard to pay attention or before I know it - the whole package or whatever...is GONE! :bugeyed
LOL! It's okay. They say once every week or two you need to eat something off diet so A. You don't freak out and break the whole diet and B. If you are doing a lower carb diet so your body doesn't try to hold on to the fat you want to lose. So I don't mind. Jeez I love those TimTam Orgasms!!!
That sucks, I wish they were already on sale for everyone. I have tickets for the 2nd time I'm seeing it, here by where I'm staying, but not yet for the 1st time I see it, in Chatswood. Just depends on the theater. Hopefully soon we'll all have tickets :clapping:

Hmm I better not make those mint slice things after all. You guys reminded me how I have lost 6kg this year. Have been going up a few kg per year since I was 19 (and was pretty underweight mind you). But this year I freaked out when I got weighed and was technically in the overweight catagory! So yeah, back in the healthy weight range now and happy about it.

I like Ballarat. Actually my dog was from a breeder in Willaura but we picked him up from Ballarat!!
I'm getting the impression Ballarat is doggie central!!
Yet, I have 4 cats. :D
What sort of dog did you get?
It's one of those nice, in the middle of everything sort of places. I think one advantage will be I should have no probs seeing TII every day of the fortnight.
A little Jack Russell  We got him just in time too. There was a young couple walking towards us, and when we told the receptionist "we'll take him" they turned back and walked out LOL
And Ballarat's very cute.. it's got this nice old fashioned charm to it.
Aww. Jack Russell's are cute! My bro has one and it's a little bonkers!!
It has. Can blame sovereign hill for that. Never managed to find any gold here though.

Here's the little monster in action..
He permanently has one standing ear and one folded ear

Hahaha. He's so cute!
What you see him playing with is a red heart that used to be attached to a teddy bear. We won't get into what he did to the teddy ...

How often do you have to replace toys?!
(oops! I'm a postwhore)
That is the most adorable dog cozzie! Its like something out of a childrens book with the ears hehe

They are bonkers, endless energy too. He could be fast asleep, but squeeze one of his squeaky toys and he's UP and ready!
We get him new toys all the time, you wouldn't believe how quickly he goes through tennis balls. He'll play with them for a while, then sit down and rip them apart :mello:

hahaha that's cute!
We got him when he was 18 months old.. at first I thought maybe the RSPCA had made a mistake with his age and that he was a lot younger (which is why his ear was folded).
We kept waiting for his ear to stand up, but that day never came!
