Hmmm, they want a zip code, so the info will seemingly be about the American release of it only. I wonder if there's anything corresponding for outside the US.
Update: No, at least not for Germany. All there is on the German site is some article about it, saying it will be out October 28th and so on.

I'm registered. I hope they show this at all theaters..not just select theaters...or only in big cities.
I live in small town, USA in Minnesota so if they bypass my city because we have less than 10,000 people living in our town, I'll be pissed.
On the other hand...I am 1 hour east of Fargo, North Dakota so maybe I'll have to take a road trip to see MJ.......IF they show it in Fargo.
God I hope so

MICHAEL JACKSON THIS IS IT" TO BE PRESENTED EXCLUSIVELY FOR TWO-WEEK LIMITED ENGAGEMENT AROUND THE WORLD
AUGUST 20, 2009
TICKETS TO GO ON SALE SEPTEMBER 27. INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF MICHAEL JACKSON AS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE TO HIT THEATERS WORLDWIDE OCTOBER 28
CULVER CITY, Ca., August 20, 2009 - Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment announced today that Michael Jackson THIS IS IT will be released exclusively for a special, limited, two-week engagement worldwide, with the studio pushing up the debut of the film by two days, to Wednesday, October 28th. Due to the anticipated demand for this film, tickets for the two-week presentation will go on sale in most cities beginning on Sunday, September 27th.
Separately, the producers of Michael Jackson THIS IS IT announced that Kenny Ortega has been set to direct the motion picture. The film is being produced with the full support of The Estate of Michael Jackson.
Commenting on the announcement, Ortega, director of and Jackson's creative partner on the THIS IS IT concert, said, "This film is a gift to Michael's fans. As we began assembling the footage for the motion picture we realized we captured something extraordinary, unique and very special. It's a very private, exclusive look into a creative genius's world. For the first time ever, fans will see Michael as they have never seen him before – this great artist at work. It is raw, emotional, moving and powerful footage that captures his interactions with the THIS IS IT collaborators that he had personally assembled for this once in a lifetime project. This film shows a consummate performer working with and guiding singers, dancers, band members, choreographers, special effects creators and countless other creative members of the team as we all assemble this historic concert. I can think of many words to describe Michael as he rehearses for and creates THIS IS IT– inspirational, dynamic, generous, dedicated, loving and the guiding force—you see him as the true architect and driving force of this project – a true master of his craft, the Entertainer of Entertainers. I'm proud of the many years of friendship and creative association I shared with Michael and I'm happy that people will get a chance to see his spirit and drive in action. THIS IS IT may go down as the greatest concert that no one got a chance to see, but with this film, we get a rare portrait of Michael as he prepares for his final curtain call and what I believe was going to be his master work."
Michael Jackson THIS IS IT will offer Jackson fans and music lovers worldwide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place beginning this summer in London's O2 Arena. Chronicling the months from April through June, 2009, the film is drawn from more than one hundred hours of behind-the-scenes footage, featuring Jackson rehearsing a number of his songs for the show. Audiences will be given a privileged and private look at the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, and genius as he creates and perfects his final show.
"I have never been partners with a more creative, innovative or groundbreaking entertainer than Michael Jackson," said Randy Phillips, President & CEO, AEG LIVE and producer of Michael Jackson THIS IS IT. "While the concerts would have been the greatest shows in the history of music, our film will provide a historic event for Michael's fans to see for themselves the genius that he was and the creativity, talent and imagination that the entire cast devoted to create the ‘greatest concert that never happened'."
In the coming weeks, additional information about the film will be available at www.michaeljackson.com.
Dubbed the Billion Dollar Maestro by Daily Variety, Kenny Ortega has conquered Feature Films, Television, Stage, Concerts and massive Live Events such as The Olympics with equal excellence. As Michael Jackson's director and creative partner on THIS IS IT as well as the previous Jackson concert tours DANGEROUS and HISTORY, Mr. Ortega has been a friend, trusted colleague and collaborator of Michael Jackson's for over 20 years.
Kenny will segue from directing the film version of THIS IS IT to directing the Paramount feature film Footloose this fall. The multiple Emmy Award winner famously directed and visualized Disney's billion-dollar High School Musical franchise of films both for Television and as a Feature Film. Kenny directed the fastest selling concert tour in history, the Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus "Best of Both Worlds Tour" featuring The Jonas Bros. This tour broke numerous records and extended its sell out tour by more than 20 shows. He also directed to tremendous praise the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I already edited my post you didn't have to post that pointless longass article since the tickets site isn't even mentioned in it. I eventually found it through sonypictures but only some tiny link which redirected to the page, and it still hasn't even been announced on the official MJ site yet. I wish they'd pull their finger out and update more often. They only 'announced' the official opus yesterday and we've already known about that for 2 weeks.

this made me lol... i must say i was thinking the same thing.. however I am surprised that it wouldn't be a worldwide release. Sony knows damn well that MJ wasn't just any ol' artist, he is a MEGA ARTIST and there is not one country on this earth that hasn't heard of him. This is just wrong of them, they should release it globally so we can all rush back here to chat about it.

Right. CALM DOWN ;) It is worldwide release. The site given in this thread (first post) was just a "register for info" thing in the US. It's not about buying tickets or the movie's actual release. We'll all get info eventually in September about where it will be in our countries, how to get tickets, etc.

Something has to be done with all this hoopla, its just a movie. Its not a concert, why on earth can't we just pop along to a cinema and buy our tickets there and then, ohh wait a minute its AEG/SONY, and its all about cost, not about fans, not about how good the movie will be, its not about Michael Jackson. Its all about money!
This is da ja vue! This is just like when the concert tickets were put up for pre-sale, initial 10 nights then went to 50 nights. The same with the movie, create a panic, only two week showing, watch this, this will run until Christmas.

c'mon. Of course it will be worldwide. With a DVD release. Since when is Sony not gonna take up the opportunity to fully milk something for all it's worth? Maybe there are no UK announcements yet because the premiere might be here or something. Would they have paid 50 or 60 million to only release the footage in the US? What would they get out of basically giving it for free to everyone else (since if people outside the US couldn't see it, they'd just download pirate copies)? It's not even released until October anyway, it's normal for any movie that plans aren't all together yet.

^ I guess not. It hasn't got a second of material we haven't already seen. It's just a very well made fan trailer. As soon as there is a real trailer, it will be up on the website for sure:)
+ you can see that the image is bigger and smaller at certain points in that 'trailer'. Not official (is my guess).

As for the trailers, expect them to be launched next week as we head into September!

Thanks for the info Smooth Criminal.
Glade to see that it sounds like it's going to available to everyone. I would hope so, it's bad enough the man has passed let alone having to shell out money we don't have to see his last work.
Michael would want the entire world to see it. I hope they do, and remember what an amazing artist he will always be.
It'll be so damn hard to watch....you'll leave more than inspired though. Only thing is, it'll leaving you wanting more, for Michael...the thought that he could now enjoy life, feel free, share his work with others, and hopefully get the respect he so much deserved. What hurts is knowing what more could have been, him on Ellen, laughing and joking, special appearances etc. We always wanted the best for our Michael. Bless his soul.

The movie will be shown in all major markets around the world so please do not worry! I can guarantee that the movie will be available on a large scale basis in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, etc. If you live in a country that usually has American movies in the cinema then you will also have This Is It. If your country does not often show American movies then you might have to search harder. But people should not be worried about not seeing it, especially if you live in the UK!

They are not ticket sales. It's just a mailing list to be notified of when they do go on sale. There's probably no info on your sonypictures site because the movie isn't even finished yet.
I still wait for the trailer.

Trailers will begin in September. There will be several made for both television, billboard, radio, and cinema advertising. Rumors are pointing at the MTV music awards for a possible debut for the television component of the campaign but this cannot be confirmed at this time. From what I have heard from my own sources I've been communicating with the trailers are coming very soon. The advertising campaign will be quite large for this type of project. Sony is apparently investing millions into advertising. Stay tuned to Michael Jackson.com, more info is coming next week...

Doubt it, Sony will want to recoup as much money as possible therefore it will no doubt play in cities and major towns around the UK. Dont forget, Michael has a huge fanbase here, fans will go pay to see it not just once or twice but a few times, especially if they play it as a limited run.

For those who are concerned about the release in Sweden..
I contacted "SF" and got this reply:
"Som det ser ut i nuläget kommer vi att visa filmen. Ett tips är att hĺlla utkik pĺ vĺr hemsida för kommande information. "
So they're basically saying that they are probably gonna show it, and that you should look out at their homepage for upcoming information.

I have some news about the movie guys, just revealed to me by a source working closely on the movie. I can't give his name due to privacy but I can confirm it is 100% legit. There is some great stuff here, here is what I know:
1) Trailers are mostly done, and were waiting partly on the footage from the funeral which is being added in now. Expect to see the first ad premiere next weekend. I tried to press him on more info regarding the VMA's but couldn't get a confirmation.
2) The movie is not a 2 hour concert like many fans thought. In fact the movie is simply a documentary based around the This Is It tour, it shows Jackson in his final days and includes his death, aftermath, and reaction. Clips from the memorial and funeral will be used.
3) There will be some footage of MJ performing, much longer then the 3-4 minute snippet released at the end of June by AEG. You will see MJ in his dressing room, mingling and directing, plus one scene where he talks to the camera. Basically, it will show Jackson in his final months alive.
4) The movie is between 100 and 130 minutes in length.
5) The plan for the DVD is to have it out in late November by Thanksgiving or early December at the latest, although my source revealed this maybe a long shot if they extend the 2 week showing to 3 or 4 weeks (which is possible).
6) The DVD will contain the theatrical version in its whole plus over 2 hours of Jackson performing, warming up his vocals, singing, and in full costume. The most spectacular footage is by far from the Staples Center in LA which I'm told will "blow fans away". This extra footage will be a special feature on the DVD along with many other treats that fans will love.
7) Finally, the CD soundtrack I'm told will be released after the movie, most likely sometime in November to coincide with the DVD launch and WILL include a new song Jackson recorded in his last 2 years alive. Apparently the song is "off the hook" and is currently being worked on by producers who are putting the finishing touches on it and is being considered to be issued as a single all around the world.

God, I hope that's not true. Why would they do that? It's not as if we need to be reminded.
I thought this film was going to celebrate him as a performer.... why on earth would they want to show clips from the memorial and the funeral?? No fan wants to go through all that again...

It is confirmed that they got 100 hrs of rehearsel footage to make the movie..
why wouldn't they use it?
Days after MJ passed away, a source from AEG came out and said that they have the whole rehearsel for the concert on tape..

"Thanks for the information. If accurate I am disappointed, I was hoping for it to be mostly dress rehearsal footage of him performing :-( Maybe I will wait for the dvd afterall"
My feelings as well...I cant help but think the "two week" showing thing will turn getting tickets for the Movie in the Cinemas into a fiasco along the lines of the O2 tickets... and I really dont want to go thru all that again...why cant they just release it like any other movie? sorry to grumble in such a happy thread... I really want to see the trailer...and I really want to see the Movie and I really want the DVD...but I really dont want to get caught up in a "scrum" to get tickets...totally unnecessary on Sonys behalf and totally undignified for fans, just my opinion.

he movie is not a 2 hour concert like many fans thought. In fact the movie is simply a documentary based around the This Is It tour, it shows Jackson in his final days and includes his death, aftermath, and reaction. Clips from the memorial and funeral will be used.

It sounds like they're turning Michaels final weeks and beyond into a complete soap opera, and it feels wayyyy off to me. Do we need to sit through and relive the torture of every single day since 25th June? I already knew I'd be upset by the movie, now Im properly dreading it.

God, I hope that's not true. Why would they do that? It's not as if we need to be reminded.
I thought this film was going to celebrate him as a performer.... why on earth would they want to show clips from the memorial and the funeral?? No fan wants to go through all that again...
I agree I thought the movie was gonna be something positive after all this tragedy why on earth would they put that stuff in there?
anyway I think Im gonna wait for the DVD coz it seems that there are gonna be more interesting stuff on it and Im pretty sure that even if I want to see it in the cinema the tickets are gonna sell out really fast and I will not be able to get one on time

The fall calendar is full of what should be good movies. Here’s the latest look at those slated for wide release...

I have been reading some of the comments and I want to make the facts clear. I did not say the whole film is going to be voiceovers and documentary style antics. I simply said, the film will not be a 2 hour full fledge concert. There will be many aspects to the movie, including a balance of performing, directing, talking, a retrospective of Jackson's final days, and mentioning of the death/aftermath. Remember, Sony has to make this appealing to the masses as well. People will want to go more if the movie offers a bit of everything and sparks intense emotion among the viewers. Don't worry about it being negative, the Jackson estate has made it clear the movie CANNOT make Jackson look bad in any form. It will be positive but emotional. While its true the DVD will have more to offer fans (hours of performing, rehearsing, vocal training, etc), that does not mean the theatrical release will be garbage. This Is It will be an amazing movie, and while it will be slightly geared to the general public opposed to fans, it will still contain some amazing moments that a big screen will only amplify.
So don't skip out on the movie, try your best to get tickets and let's experience the last time Michael Jackson himself will be the starring role in a theatrical release!

Believe me Sony will want to milk the 100 hours footage they now hold after paying millions of dollars. This is it movie will not be about the rehearsals, its gonna be about Michael Jackson the genius, about him, his mind about his creative thought process and the legacy he will leave behind and behind the scenes run up to his final days. Sony will release the un-cut version of the rehearsals probably next Christmas on DVD.

It's too soon for some of us. Some of us are still very emotional and even in mourning state. It's simply still too painfull.
Especially if there's gonna be footage of news about his death and the memorial... I'm really afraid that I can't contain myself at the theatre, it'll be just like watching the memorial again, crying my eyes out.

^ Yes the movie shown in cinemas will be identical to the DVD. The only difference between the two, is that the DVD will have bonus material with much more content than the cinema release. This is to give fans incentive to buy the DVD as well. Most DVD's now have bonus material such as deleted scenes, interactive material, related material, etc. This Is It will be no different, sources have told me the DVD will have over 2 hours of extras!

The latest issue of Rolling Stone (Sept 17) says this:
.... "The film, which will debut in theaters in October, documents the run-up to the London shows Jackson was scheduled to play this summer. 'It shows you him in complete control -- directing the dancers, directing the band,' says Jackson's manager, Frank DiLeo, who has seen the footage. 'He's very happy, smiling, laughing, joking through the whole thing. I can't tell you the ending, but that's the best part.'"
The first time I read "I can't tell you the ending, but that's the best part" I was confused -- if it's going to be documentary style and chronological, how could the end be the best part? That would be the saddest, worst part! But then after reading the setlist thread I wonder if this is referring the helicopter idea for Earth Song, or maybe something with the new initiative to heal the world that some say MJ was planning to announce.... any thoughts from anyone else on what he could mean?

Thanks for the updates. It would be nice if it premiered on the VMA's. I can't wait to see it! I wish they would focus less on the funeral at the end, I would rather see some more performances but I guess it's nice that they saved that for the dvd. Someone said they shot 100 hours of footage. I hope it's all released.
The estate have really thought this out by releasing a cd too. They've organized this well.
not sure what they mean by the ending being the best part. Maybe they'll show some funeral footage and then maybe he'll perform something like "earth song" "heal the world" "man in the mirror" "will you be there" so it'll end on an uplifting note?
