View Full Version : I hate my generation (vent).

I really do. I was at a high school dance last night (I'm a sophmore in HS) and I seriously can't believe the junk my generation listens to. I've been to plenty of dances before, I love dances and such. It's my thing. But they usually played some decent music. I hardly listen to mainstream and when I do, my friends are playing it. I don't even know 98% of the stuff that was played last night but it all gave me a giant headache.
Anyway, this is sort of about Michael. Since they were playing crap music, I went up to the senior DJ and asked if he had any Michael Jackson. He showed me and he had the usual songs you know like, Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller, Smooth Criminal. I said, "Play some Michael Jackson, anything you have."
So about 10 minutes the later, the DJ announces that the food and refreshments had arrived and told everybody to go help themselves. Then he said, "During this little 'intermission' we'll give you a little bit of MJ. Rest in peace." Then everybody starts to clear out of the gym to go get food and he plays Beat It. I was so pissed off. He turned it down too, to the point where almost nobody could hear it. There were barely any people in the gym at the time and I was the only one singing. The only part everybody else sang was, "BEAT IT!" Otherwise, nobody cared. But then some song by supposedly (my friend told me) Lil Wayne and a few other people came on right after Beat It and the DJ blasted it. Everybody was screaming and I saw a swarm of people rushing back in to dance to the song. I thought that was really ridiculous.
Then the rest of the night, they didn't play anymore Michael Jackson. All of the other dances I've been to, they played Michael Jackson constantly. But they weren't really high school dances, so maybe that's why. I just can't believe the garbage my generation fills their heads with. These songs they were playing were just...disgusting or plain stupid. And then some song that goes like, "do the stanky leg" was playing and everybody kept saying, "This is such a great song! I love this song!" Uh...ok...if that's their idea of a "great" song then I really don't want to know anything else...Personally, I was lmao upon hearing the song because I thought it was a joke.
Oh might I add, there were a lot of "blank" parts in the songs. You know, where they edit out the cuss words. I listen to music from before my time and not even the rap music was like that. Now, I can't believe they allow such content in music. It gave me a damn head ache.
Oh, how I wish I was a teenager in the 80's. I can just imagine how awesome the high dances would have been. I'm so jealous of you 80's teens.

Basically, being a teenager in general sucks. So you can't win either way. lol.
I really was born in the wrong generation though. Why God did this, I have no idea. :p

I know exactly how you feel, I'm not at all on one line with my generation
I was born in 1990, but I always feel my heart lies somewhere between the 60's, 70's and 80's.

I was a 90's teen, and I'll tell you, compared to now, being a Michael fan in 93 was far from fun...

I at times wish I was born the same year as Mom (1958) so I can experience the J5 and the Jacksons era (my really favorite era is 1976, 1977 and 1978. When He had that fro.) But I'm happy about the year I was born. I'm 20 and there are plenty of Fans from our gen that do love Michael so much, mostly on forums sometimes. ;)
And what was wrong with being a teen in the 80's?

Yeah, but the high school years (these days anyway) aren't as cracked up as they're made out to be. ha. Life basically revolves around school and preparing for your future and everybody around you nagging the hell out of you. I really don't blame your daughter though. Those kind of things, like dances, aren't really any fun if they're not playing music that you're interested in. I was having a hard time having fun because for one thing I didn't know the songs and they just gave me a head ache. haha.

This is very true....there is alot more pressure on you guys now a days then there was on my generation when we went to high school....fortunately my daughter is a good student...BUT....I do still nag her too....they have created this new thing for graduation called portfolio...and it is just a pain but it is a requirement and it must be done in grades 9-12 in order to graduate. I dont know if you are familiar with this??? This is true about the school dances not being fun.....:(...sorrry)
EDIT....actually my daughter likes groups like...Boys like Girls, Aiden, ya know punk rock groups...I have spent many a nights at these concerts.....(so she doesnt get hurt)

The problem with the last 10-15 years or so is that no one have any respect for music any more.
The artists don't put enough work into it, the consumers aren't picky enough, the DJ's don't give a crap. No one cares about music, and we're flooded with too much music.
When I grew up in the 90's, even the dance music was well put together because you had to have a real studio to make music (which costed a shit load of money) - now days people make #1 records on a laptop, which in a way is a great thing because it opens up doors for people with no money.
But in the end of the day it's like, we're brain washed but what MTV and the radio channels are playing and people are dumb enough to buy those records.
It's an evil cycle where people buy and support crap music, and the labels force us to buy that crap by not putting out quality music.
Today everyone can have a label, everyone can make music, everyone can be a rapper, everyone can be a DJ. It's would be a great thing is people would take it more seriously.

i say the same thing everyday...i'm 23 and i've always been a more old soul than my friends. i listen to crazy rap or goofy songs like stanky leg while driving because I hate driving and it cracks me up and something to bob to, but holy hell does the music of today suck.
I wish so bad that I was born the year my mom was (1960). Get the J5 and motown, fun teens in the 70s, then GLORIOUS 20s in the 80s...i would have given anything to have my whole 20s in the 80s and she barely paid attention. She wasn't into anything, I'm like were you asleep your whole life? jesus.
Great concerts, cool crazy ass makeup and clothes and hair, great movies that we now just REMAKE, michael mania, just awesomely fun times. ugh, nothing like that now..only thing i like about now is the technology (cell phones, laptops, etc) but i'd still kick it to the curb if i could have had my 20s in the 80s.

Hmm, I'm not sure exactly what portfolio is but I know for our writings that we do for English class and such we have to keep them IN a portofolio binder because some colleges ask to see them. Otherwise, I don't think it's the same thing. haha. Whatever it is, it doesn't sound fun. I'm a good student too, so it's a lot more pressure than you think. It feels like I have no life. :p
Boy Like Girls is pretty alright. Some of their songs are good, I don't much of them though. They don't really play punk rock stuff at dances. Not sure why but sometimes I'd rather have that over the p.o.s. music they play now.

My thoughts exactly! Today anybody can make 'music', anybody can have a hit song, and nobody puts their heart and soul into it anymore. It's meaningless junk targetted towards (some) idiots in my generation who easily get brainwashed and sucked into it. They put anything out there just to make a few bucks off of it. I mean really, there are "music artists" getting discovered instantly through youtube and myspace. Plus, all of the music sounds the same. Last night, I really couldn't tell when they changed to a different song. And a lot of the songs today sound like a remake of songs from 20 years ago (that "you spin my head right round" song or whatever, totally butchered the original song). They're all the same. I wish music would be taken more seriously again. It's a form of art. How disturbing would it be if you saw a painting representing Lil Wayne's song "Lollipop" (heard that song last night...I was greatly disturbed. lol). I certainly don't want to listen to that...

Ah man, close your eyes for a second... imagine that it's 1969, you're sitting in your car... your turning on the radio and you're hearing I Want You Back & ABC for the first time. That is what they played on the radio.
I love to escape into worlds like that while listening to those songs or Big Boy, I'll Be There, Never Can Say Goodbye e.t.c... just closing my eyes and trick myself that I'm in another place.

Oh hell yeah, I totally wish I was born a lil' earlier! I'm 19 now, can still say I was an '80s kid so I experienced only a bit of the last puffs of those good times.
I feel being an 'old soul' since I was little...I love the music, love the style, just the whole time is awesome!
I think this generation is losing it's originality....it's so sad!
Though when you search you'll find enough people who feel the same way as we do, but the average person just goes with the flow and the hypes and that's it. That type of behaviour is what I'm so irritated about...I feel so different from people of the same age.
Especially now that Mike died I feel like that whole generation of those times is kind of closed or gone.

Hi Courtney,
I'm sorry for what you went through at your dance. I was also a teen in the 80s like other posters here in this thread. I will say that I loved our high school dances. They were great, and yes they played a lot of MJ and other people who were very popular and maybe still are depending on the singer.

What about the truly talented music artist that can't be discovered or signed because they didn't match the Image that the corporate record companies wanted? I feel so sorry for them because some have to struggle to be heard. Maybe if the music business these days were worried about quality and not Image I think I would respect music these days more. That's also the reason of why I don't listen to radio these days, they just play the same stuff over and over again.
And BTW, I hate the stanky-leg dance (with the fire of a thousand suns) and any dance fad these days. It's just plain stupid and uncreative, I mean seriously.

Exactly! And I don't know when or even if this "junk hysteria" will stop, because soon people can make music on their iphones, and then they will probably develop a tool which makes the music create itself.
It's like, Mary J Blige said in an interview, that she wished that people would still make records like "Rock With You"... but how can that be when they don't fill a studio with musicians any more?!
It's only on rare occasion where you hear well orchestrated records... it happens almost only in movie scores.
That's why I love Shakira's latest single "She Wolf" because it has that work ethic to it. It might not be the illest record right now, but you can hear that the producers really cared when they did put it together.
Man, rap music in the late 80's and early/mid 90's were absolutely awesome. They sampled soul records and built untop of that. Now days they don't do that because it cost too much money in lost royalites to sample music.
So what do they do? The let some 14 year old pimpled up kid make a drum beat to rap over.
It's pity, I'm glad that they can't take all the old records from us
*goes away and listens to Jackson 5 - Big Boy*

I feel the same way! I feel that people just look at it as "old" music or their "parents" music. I mean really, when a song from 2006 is on the radio, my friends will be like, "Ew, this song is so old!" Meanwhile, I listen to music that is well over 20 years old. If they think 3 years is old, they must think 20 is ancient.

I agree. It's all about the looks, no talent required. That's how it is now and it's sad. Also, I can't stand that auto-tune crap or whatever it's called. It's what Akon uses on his voice. I can't stand that. It's very annoying and is being used for a lot of songs now. Can't we have some real singers?
Oh yeah, and there's also something called "Jerk" I think? My friend constantly talks about. She always says, "I want to learn how to jerk soooo bad!" I'm like wtf? She told me it's a new dance to a song. I don't really want to know anymore than that. haha. Next time she says it I'll say, "How about I teach you Thriller instead?" :p

Yea... I feel you on that.
I use to not care much about music BUT now that I do, OMG!!! I've noticed how crappy the radio stations are. I can't help but be very negative when I listen to it. XD My brother gets mad at me cause I keep making sarcastic comments in the car while his driving. For instance:That song 'Best I ever had" Are you kidding me?? I wanted to smash the person's face for repeating that line so many EFFIN times! It's like, I get it.... And the autotune... I DESPISE IT! It's like if you can't sing and has no other talent, then dont even bother becoming a singer. By the way, I HATE LIL WAYNE so much! How the hell did he become so popular? He just murmurs his way through a song...and I hate his voice... GRR!!
Okay, that's enough venting for today...My diary is full of it already.. :p
I feel like an old soul really. I was born in the wrong time period, definitely.....

i was born in 1964 just a few years younger than MJ, so i grew up with him really. by the time i was into music he was there for me. by the time i was into fashion .......... well gotta say 70S fashion was the pits lol. but we loved it at the time, so colourful.
teenage years arnt easy no matter what decade you was born but the one thing that always stays with you is the music, i feel you can and always will identify with your own era. i do like alot of todays music but it has to be music not just a bloody noise.
i recently went out with some friends, most of them alot younger than me (they feel sorry for this old bird i think).... i asked the dj to play some mj and he typically played BJ, BI.... but i wanted YOU ROCK MY WORLD... SIM RE-MIX.. but no... he didn't have them.. i love all MJ music but i just wish his newer stuff got played more.
all you young uns... i just love you all . xxx

i also agree with the 80's thing, both me and my boyfriend wish we were this age in the 80's. we're both 24 and love all the 80's fashion and music, luckily it has all come back again!! for a while at least.

Oh gosh, don't be embarrassed at all! I'm growing up with the popular music and I really don't know any of it either. I mean, I hear it but there is A LOT that I don't know. When I tell my friends that, they think I'm insane. They're like, "You don't know soandso's new song!!?" And I say, "Who?" I don't know much artists of today. I know Taylor Swift is pretty popular. Beyonce and Britney Spears, etc. I consider them "today." I'll admit, when I was about 10 I had a crush on that scumbag Jesse McCartney but that was seriously nothing...
I cannot stand that either, there are even some songs from early 2008 that some of the same people will dismiss as old.
Yes, very true. To me, music is timeless not matter how dated some of it may sound. Sometimes you can tell and 80's or 70's tune from a 90's tune. Or even a 90's tune from a 00's tune. But there are some songs, for example Michael's, that don't sound dated at all. If I heard Man In The Mirror for the first time today, I would never have guessed it was a song made in the 80's. But if I heard Beat It, I'd say, "That's 80's."
Yeah indeed...it sometimes makes me feel so lonely, but on the other hand....they're missing out BIG TIME! And we can be proud of ourselves that we judge music by the quality, the love, the message and the feeling...not by it's popularity or stupid hypes.

So true! I say that to my friends all the time and they say, "Maybe it's YOU who doesn't know good music." Which makes me laugh to end.

I can relate. Last night, when they played Beat It, the only thing everybody (who was still there when it was playing) sang was, "BEAT IT" which was pretty sad and got me kind of angry.
And they played Don't Stop Believing. I know all the words to that song but everybody there only knew the chorus and the beginning. :p
You know, I seriously thought they were going to bust out playing Billie Jean last night. I had such a great feeling of that. When I got there, there were two guys moonwalking (or attempting..? haha) and I cheered to them. lol. I had such a confident feeling they would but they didn't at all! Instead, when they actually played a good song (Beat It) they played it when almost nobody was in the gym and where we could barely hear it. I was pretty pissed off, since I requested Michael Jackson...

i was born in 1964 just a few years younger than MJ, so i grew up with him really. by the time i was into music he was there for me. by the time i was into fashion .......... well gotta say 70S fashion was the pits lol. but we loved it at the time, so colourful.
teenage years arnt easy no matter what decade you was born but the one thing that always stays with you is the music, i feel you can and always will identify with your own era. i do like alot of todays music but it has to be music not just a bloody noise.
i recently went out with some friends, most of them alot younger than me (they feel sorry for this old bird i think).... i asked the dj to play some mj and he typically played BJ, BI.... but i wanted YOU ROCK MY WORLD... SIM RE-MIX.. but no... he didn't have them.. i love all MJ music but i just wish his newer stuff got played more.
all you young uns... i just love you all . xxx
You're very lucky. I would have loved to grow up watching such a great talent like Michael Jackson. But I should feel lucky that I was living in his time at all. Newer generations coming won't get to the say that in the next years but will still, thankfully, have his music.
That's insane...no Michael at all? haha. I wish they would carry his newer music and basically just his other songs. He has such amazing songs besides Billie Jean and all of those. I have a feeling that the newer generation would love You Rock My World. It has that "feel" to it. A lot better than everything that is out there today.

omg, you have no idea how many times I have said I was born too late. I can't even listen to the radio anymore, it's crap to me. I wish I was born in 1970s ish. hmmmm... Everything on the radio nowadays seems the same, a lot of it is degrading to women IMO. I can't stand lil wayne either. His voice is just so annoying.

Yeah, I'm not a Lil Wayne person either. Ugh. My friend is pretty much obsessed with him because she think he's "hot." I find him disgusting.

I loved nsync when I was little (dont judge me I was young lmao)....and from what I remember being a fan was so much more fun. me and my friends always lined up at store just to get the new cd first thing. We would also have partys just waiting for there video premire.People would pitch tents just to wait for concert tickets, none of this buying online business. Having a cd/record/tape whatever of somebody was like a gem, now its just too easy to get music.
Oh Courtney, how I understand you... :(
I won't add anything else, cuz' you really said everything I think, it's like you were in my head, LOL.
I really hate our generation and when people say 80's music is for old guys and it's a totally sh*t, I'm like... :bugeyed WTF? But let them be... if they enjoy the "music" of nowadays is their problem.

yep.im 21,but i always feel i was in a reminiscent state of mind when it come to the wild and great things about the old days, the 60s-80s rocks!especially 80s when michael is on his way up to rule the world with his overwhelming music power.i love him so much that i wanna spend my youth witnessing his prime time and then growing mature and getting old together with him .(daydreaming--lol)that could have been the best thing in my life.
i wish i could do that in my next life ,lol

well my daughter is only 10 and i have to say she is totally converted... an MJ nut. being only ten she tends to listen to the early Jackson 5 and Jackson stuff and really thinks MJ looks great as a teen, i hate to tell her that those pics are sooooooooooooo old but hey she is loving him so i'm not gonna disagree with her.
i want this younger generation to feel for him what we do and i love how my girl is loving him too. she is even trying to learn his dances (not doing to good yet) lol. but hey shes having a go. so cute.

ha, I remember the boyband "era" even though I was very young. I grew up hearing mostly 70's and 80's, a lot of it including Michael, Madonna, Bryan Adams, etc. but I still heard other new music.
I know what you mean, it is too easy to get music. You just download it off the computer. Sometimes I wish we didn't have such advanced technology but I'm thankful for it. All the more reason to want to live in the 80's. lol. No illegal downloading, no itunes, ipods, cell phones, etc. I don't know why but for some reason I think all of that stuff just makes life more difficult. LOL.

Yeah, I hate when our generation calls that music "old people music." Ugh. It definitely isn't. It's for everybody. If it weren't for that "old people music" much of the artists today wouldn't even be around.

I have a feeling that Michael's legacy will grow stronger with the next generation (not mine. ugh) because of parents introducing him to them and such. It will be a great thing to see. :)

I agree very much with what others have said - a lot of todays music is throwaway. They just want to hit the public with it when its popular to capitalise on it, before the overkill. The production levels behind successful musicians from the 80s were unlike anything you see from most artists today - record companies don't want to spend the money. In the last 10 years its all gone tits up - I blame Simon Cowell for a lot of the trash around today.
I grew up in the 80s - I was there when Madonna and Janet started and Duran Duran. I was 10 when "Thriller" was released, 14 for "Bad", the perfect age to appreciate Michael. As a ten year old I just thought he was the coolest thing that ever grew legs and strode the planet, and then he came back a few years later looking like sex on a stick. I was at boarding school at the time which I hated, and had a big poster of Bad era Mike over my bed - every single night that thing would be down off the wall and in the bed with me!!
I love that younger people rate the 80s. A lot of people, particularly in the UK slate the 80s as crap, but its mostly because it was the Thatcher era, I loved growing up in that time - the films were better, music, TV, but there was a lot of hardship still, and prejudice even on TV that you wouldn't see today. I did always wish I lived in the states and went to high school when I watched " The Breakfast Club" and "Pretty in Pink", I loved John Hughes (RIP).
So I think nobody is really happy until they can look back at a time in their lives and say yeah, that was great - I'm sorry that you feel disillusioned with your own generation - but I feel privileged that we all grew up with Michael in our lives, that we all share that common bond no matter what age we are. You have his music if others don't want it, its their loss.

I loved reading your post. Thank you sharing that. You're so lucky to have experienced all of that! Ah, jealousy. lol. It just seems like such a great period of time to live in. Most of my favorite movies are 80's movies as well as artists and songs. My parents were teens/young adults in the 80's and I feel they don't appreciate it as much. I am very grateful to have Michael in my life. I have memories of him growing up and memories from just a couple years ago. I feel happy that I can say that. I just wish my generation would come to appreciate him and older artists more. They don't understand and don't really know any better. I'm glad my parents introduced it to me when I was young. I certainly wouldn't want my kids listening to the junk from today.

I was really into the Backstreet Boys! The boy band era was defintly interesting, I remember going to Nsync and BSB concerts - I'm not sure which had the loudest fans, I was deaf after each one lol.
I feel with many of the younger generations, this is now the DISNEY era!! Would it also be the new bubble gum?? Singers like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Jonas, Demi Lavoto, Every disney star has their own album now. Its crazy...
I think that I'm still a little lucky being born on 94, cuz' music at the beginning of this millennium was good and Michael released Invincible on 2001 too, for example. But those who were born later in the final years of the other millennium or in this one...
If my generation lost a lot, they (will) lost a lot more than us.

ha, I liked Backstreet Boys. Hell, I'm even guilty of singing along to some of their songs if I hear them. lol. As much as I hate to admit that.
Wasn't much of an Nsync person. I was really young and my cousin had a BSB CD and she used to play it all the time. She was a teenager then so went to their concerts and stuff.
I really don't understand the hype over the Disney stars (the only names I know of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas guys). Nothing special at all. Basically, you get a show on Disney you most likely will be told you can sing (when you can't) and have maybe 1 or 2 albums out. It's horrible how music is getting thrown around like that. It's like they'll give music to anybody. Good or not they'll just fix up your voice anyway...

I see your point but I'm referring to the new artists. I kind am glad I wasn't born any later than I was because I wouldn't have any memories of Michael. I love being able to say, "Oh yeah! Yer agree, i thank god my parents liked what they liked, i grew up on really good music, like my mum was a massive David Bowie fan and now so am i, and you just teach yourself some greats along the way then because your not scared to be into different types of music , i think kids today are scared to admit that they like, what they call 'old music' but im me because i love music like Bowie , Bob Dylan and of course Mj, todays music just seems so boring to me! There seems to be a new artist out everyday as well, u just cant keep up!

I totally see where you're coming from. The one thing I can't stand to do more than anything else is DJ for the under-21 crowd. All they wanna hear is Stanky Legg and Best I Eva Had and a couple others. And a lot of what they want to hear (over and over) is really annoying.
Honestly....I blame the 90's lol. But seriously....I remember as a teenager in the early 90's I was thinking about this very subject. I was witnessing the culture becoming more jaded, everyone trying to be "harder", movies getting more "risque", music becoming darker, more depressing, and more overtly sexual in the mainstream, etc, etc. And I didn't like where it was going at all.
In the 80's we had fun music. Even most of the mainstream rap was all about partying, having a good time. And of course the movies were great, the tv shows were great.
Really....there was just an awesome feeling back then. Here in America we were still in the midst of the cold war and in school we'd "duck and cover" under our desks in drills to practice for nuclear attacks, but besides that....the world was a much better, more laid-back place in general (I'm mainly referring to the general feel of the culture, not people's specific lives, politics, etc).
Anyway, lemme steer my post back on topic. :)
I understand totally where you are coming from when it comes to today's music and today's culture at large. I have to deal with it regularly at specific clubs and events I work. I always do my best to work in some Michael Jackson, but I honestly cannot play the songs I want to play because the kids don't know them or don't appreciate them and it just kills the dance floor....and my job obviously is to keep people on the dance floor, no matter what I think of the music I'm playing.
Speaking on that Drake song "Best I Eva Had"....to be honest, I didn't totally mind the sound when I first heard it, so I remixed it for the club and thought overall the song was okay....but I do hate how he has to say "you da f****ng best, you da f****ng best...." I mean, this is a pop song. And LITTLE kids are listening to this (thanks to their irresponsible parents who let them). This is what I'm talking about. The culture has coarsened over the years, and while yeah some of us as adults may like it being nastier, grittier, more "cutting edge", what about the kids? The little kids don't know any better and they're being exposed to WAY more than they should be. I'm telling you, it's not healthy.
Okay....I'm stepping down off my soapbox. :) lol
All I'm saying is I completely understand what everybody here is talking about, even though I'm not from your generation.

I agree, it is very annoying. Hence, why I was getting a pounding head ache. I actually had to step outside a few times to get away from it. I asked my friend to come with me and she said, "In a little bit, I love this song!" What's to love about it? All it does is swear every 3rd word and talks about how the guy wants to get in the girl's pants.
Really? I had no idea this started in the 90's. I like some 90's music and it's pretty ok to me. But I know there were rappers like Tupac and Biggie (no disrespect to them RIP) and I know they had some suggestive lyrical content.
I really do help the next generation catches on to Michael's music and other stuff from his time and earlier. I know my generation is pretty much doomed. lol. It drives me crazy because my friends will be talking about a song and they'll say, "Do you know this song." And I'll tell them no. They'd be like, "Oh yeah I forgot. You like old stuff..." I think they get kind of frustrated too.
haha ok I just looked up that rapper Drake and...Oh Lord he's the Degrassi kid. I'm seriously lmao right now. Are you serious? I don't think I heard the song but it possibly could have been played last night. I agree. There definitely are children listening to this music and these artists don't stop think about that. Even though they may be aiming towards an older audience, kids these days are different now and will listen to it reguardless.
That stanky leg song, btw, I honestly never heard before in my life until last night. Everybody was doing the dance and I was just standing there like, "What the hell is this..."

Thought I'd share this here also:
I was hanging with my neighbors one day and this little girl on my street is about 7 and she loves all those Disney people you know. So last week, we were all just hanging, a bunch of us, and she comes over to me and wants to see my phone. I show it to her and my wallpaper is Michael. She looks at it and she goes, "Ew, it's Michael Jackson..." and I was like yeah. Then she said, "I hate him." :( Then this other kid stepped in to defend him and said, "Michael Jackson is like the best of them all." And she said, "No...Miley Cyrus is!"
I know she's 7 but when I was 7 I was like, "Yeah Michael Jackson is the best! Beatles are awesome!" Makes me upset that some kids won't get to grow up knowing great music and instead will get their heads filled with junk. This other girl my age also told me that she didn't like Michael Jackson because she prefers Taylor Swift instead....

Yes, but kids will be kids, honestly when I was 7 boy bands and britney spears were my life, this is no longer the case. My top 3 artists now are Michael, The Beatles and Alicia Keys. Alot of people mature, it's the teenagers and 20 year olds that listen to that crap is what you have to worry about.
You ever sit here and wonder though, my mom talks about this all the time, she was like well as a" 60's/70's kid, we all thought the 80's sucked, 80's kids thought the 90's sucked and now all the kids you're all age want to go back to the 90's and think this decade sucks."
Do you think kids who are about 7-11 now are going to be saying "wow when I was younger music was so much better."?

Miley Cyrus certainly is a better role model than some of the other current stars out there. But it just sickens me that people think she's the best. BLECH! (I like some of her songs, though.)
When I was a kid, we watched Nickelodeon. The only thing they did was make movies out of some of the shows, not have albums from fake singers come out (except for recently, when they started showing The Naked Brothers Band).
I grew up with amazing rock music (as well as other styles, but mainly rock) -- and it was all old music. While I liked some of Britney Spears's music and BSB and some certain mainstream songs, I mostly listened to music from the 50s, 60s and 70s (and some 80s). I was born in 1991. I started getting really into the Beatles when I was in 4th grade.
Let's just say music has gone downhill. I DO like some stuff from today's mainstream music, but not a lot of it.
I miss my childhood... :(

I actually have talked to 3 12 year old kids and they are the biggest MJ fans on a board, they were the saddest on the board about his death (they took it so hard and they also defend him to against the snide adults there) . So there are kids that age that are not that on MJ, and besides, that 7 year old will end up hating Miley anyway by the time she matures anyway.

True. Everybody will hate Miley by the that time...it happens to all of us. haha

Oh yes it was. Earthy....I'm telling ya....every time I read one of your posts I nod my head in agreement. :)
There's no era better than the 80's. Sure, now we have some amazing technology. But I would honestly trade in my dual core pentium pc for an apple II and I'd trade in my mp3 player for a walkman if only I could go back to that era and live in it for the rest of my life....and raise my kids in it. I mean that. I would seriously trade all of this....the internet, cell phones, etc. just to live in those days again and have it stay that good for the rest of my life.

me too. I'm just glad people in my school atleast appreciate his music especially the people I know dance it to on purpose cause they know I'm a fan! almost everyone knows wich is a good thing, sure there are some times where everyone would do just like how they did at ur HS dance. Now, everyone wants money. Before, artists just wanted to show how good they were and what they loved. Now its just money, money and, money.

I am 14 years old. Born in 1994.. But I really feel like a 80s teenage.. Because I only listen to 80s songs... Ok, not only 80s song.. but also 60s, 70 and 90 sometimes..
I only listen to Diana Ross, Elvis , Michael Jackson, Queen/Freddie Mercury, Janet Jackson..
Really I REALLY want to be a teenage in 70s and 80s..It was the greatest year.. I like the music and the style they had in this time..

I also hate today's music as well. If that is what these young people are listening to these days. I say give me Michael Jackson or Bollywood music any old day. I also would rather listen to the music of the 60s to the 90s. Well mostly the 80s for me because I was so in to singers and groups like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Genesis, and The Bangles. Well mostly Madonna and Michael Jackson for me. Since they were my 2 most favorite singers then. And I was just a kid then. But I was a kid who knew what good music is. Especially when it came to Michael Jackson OMG he was the greatest back then. Still is of course. Any way I would rather listen to those artists. Than to listen to artists like Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, or who ever else that is suppose to be really popular now. Maybe it is because of my age is why I hate today's music like I do. I will be 30 on January 4th. But Michael Jackson will always forever be my main choice of music to listen to. After all I have been a fan of his for over 25 years now.

And to clarify, I would have loved to be born in 57 or 58 if it wasn't for the fact the city I live in, I would not want to be here in the sixties for obvious reasons (I wish that reason didn't exist) . But if that reason didn't exist I would love a time machine to go to that era, I am a addict of 70's family's bands like the Jacksons, Osmonds and many others. And I would fangirl over Jackson era Michael so much, I would be in Heaven. And The variety show air on tv for the first time would be a cool experience. :D

We had a dance last night and they did an MJ mix of Billie Jean, RWY, Bad, and DSTYGE. Before hand, the DJ asked who liked Michael Jackson, and everyone was screaming, then everyone was hyped during the mix. The DJ also played old school hip-hop and people knew the songs and danced. Also some older rock songs also. People knew them.
The problem really is not our entire generation. And there is a lot of good music being made today. People overgeneralize things way too much.

And I wish all the time that I could have gone to see Michael in concert in the BAD tour (or any tour for that matter). Oh my god, just thinking about it :(

I hate my generation's taste in music as well, and I'm a senior in college.
It really bothers me that the genre of "pop" has degraded so much in last couple of decades.
To be honest, it always kind of bothered me that MJ was dubbed the "Kind of Pop". I mean, don't get me wrong, he deserves that title if anyone does, but his the term "pop" these days is associated with the likes of Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus, and I think it's an insult that Michael's music is put in that category, because the genre has changed so much and his music is so much more complex and exotic.
I really think the only popular act today I like is Beyonce. I adore her and I think her newest work is brilliant. Other than that, I have listened to independent music since I was in high school.
I've heard Michael talking about how songs today lack melody. There was this great quote about how he believed a great song should be able to be hummed by teenagers in the US and people cleaning the floors in Ireland alike (obviously paraphrasing here).
--
Also I get frustrated with younger people who have only grown up with this image of Michael Jackson as a creep, a pedophile, a weirdo who hated his own race, etc, and now they "hate" him.
It really saddens me. Truly. It's incredible the impact the press has molded these kids' impressions of him. Most of them haven't even heard his music.
Anyway. Sorry for the long post. Bottom line is today's kids have questionable taste, the industry is sick and this is why I stick to indie music and music from decades past!
Yeah, music's crap today. Everybody I know listens to all the news stuff which basically makes no sense and there's me with Stevie Wonder, MJ, Hendrix, Meatloaf (new album soon, WOOT LOL) etc. and hardly anybody else knows even one of their songs!

I feel exactly the same! I have friends who love Michael, and friends who absolutely hate him to death, because they judge based on tabloids. I had a dance a few months ago, before Michael died, and Thriller came on, everyone was singing the lyrics, much different to what your high school dance was like. But I didn't know half of the other songs, they were ALL really REALLY bad songs. I agree, I'd much rather have been an 80's teen than now. The songs today have almost lost all meaning...

I swear, I feel you on more levels than one. I'm 21, so I was only in HS 3 years ago, and let me tell you this. People are always saying high school can be the best years of your life.....B*** S***! My HS years were good, but def. not great! There was waaaay too much drama, and, like you, the music sucked.
BUT! The good thing about graduating and either getting a job or going to college is you're musical tastes grow significantly. And very fast if I might add.
So, obviously, you're musical taste came early, lol! Now you just gotta wait a few years for your HS mates to join in. The silly #1 singles and one-off rap songs will still be there at a few parties you may attend later, but the other genres will def. outweigh them!
Also, not all will be spared, and many friends will still be listening to the same old crap they've been listening to since they turned on a top 40 radio station. So just give it some time and you're friends will come around. Even I still can't convince some of my girls that good music lies outside the top40 list!
Best of luck!

oh my god 'pour some sugar on me' is FANTASTIC! lol always makes me laugh. what a classic tune!! hehe
i also agree with the 80's thing, both me and my boyfriend wish we were this age in the 80's. we're both 24 and love all the 80's fashion and music, luckily it has all come back again!! for a while at least.LOL about Pour Some Sugar on Me (you are talking about Def Leppard right? I hope someone else didn't do that song and I don't know about it, lol.) That was high school time for me. And it strangely has an MJ memory attached. You see, the US version of the video was filmed at the same arena where I saw Michael just one month later on the Bad Tour (here's the live version which is used in the US vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7QyuEHUKog ) Ah, the good ol' days...
Oh, one more thing for those who say they wish they'd been born in the 60's or 70's.... there was no internet, no cell phones, no iPods, etc. That's a major downside. When I was a kid I dreamed of some type of instant access to information (instead of waiting 3 days until my mom would drive me to the library) and a damned phone I could take to my friend's house ;) But we got to grow up alongside Michael and see Ghostbusters in its own time, hmmmm, lol...

I AGREE. High school is NOT that great. My mom always bragged how great high school was for her and I went expecting such an amazing experience. So much more drama, pressure and stress. Also the music of course. blah.
ha, I really don't think my friends will come around. They're so brainwashed and suck into that stuff, it's unbelievable. lol. I hope they do start to appreciate older music more though instead of thinking it's "old people music." It's quite annoying when they laugh at me all the time for it. :p

Yes, I know what you mean about the King Of Pop thing. People don't understand that pop can apply to any kind of music. The music that Miley Cyrus and all of them sing is more like "bubble gum pop" (to me anyway). Pop is short for popular music. It's not exactly a certain genre of music. I wish the rest of the title would have stuck. "King Of Pop, Rock and Soul." Or just "The King" is good enough for me. :D haha move over Elvis...
I agree. I hate that younger people are growing up looking at Michael Jackson that way also. It doesn't just frustrate me but upsets me. That's something that can, in a way, damage his legacy. But honestly, I think overtime the truth will prevail and kids will appreciate Michael for his music. At least I hope. Times will be different 10 years from now just as now is a lot different than 10 years ago.
I wish the media would just stop. They just don't care at all. When people hear, "Michael Jackson" these days, they don't think of him as a musical artist or even an actual human being. I really don't want to know what or why some people think of Michael in a negative way. Nobody ever keeps an open mind anymore about anything.

I understand that but I would manage. I'm not your typical teenager where my ipod and my cell phone are my prized possessions, best friend, and my life. I went the whole summer without my cell phone and didn't really care. haha. And I forget to charge my ipod for months. I can deal without those things.
It's funny, because I was thinking this exact same thing while listening to Kiss FM the other day. I couldn't agree with this more.
The problem with music today is that very little effort or artistic vision and ability are required to get a hit single on the radio. It's all about the hook, the chorus, the catchy line. And when any random kid (Soulja Boy comes to mind) can make a crappy song on a MAC that is just catchy enough to make it on the radio, then who needs good production? Who needs real, live instruments? Why bother putting any time or effort into creating art when some random crap you put together in 20 minutes will make you thousands? When it's all about getting the number one song on Itunes, and not the number one ALBUM on Billboard, it becomes all about churning out fast selling singles as quickly and cheaply as possible.
I personally don't think that music really started going downhill until around 1998/99. That's when artists like Britney Spears and NSync really blew up, and to a music industry that has been struggling to keep up with consumers for years, that really set a standard for them. An artist has to sell millions of singles (not albums) to be considered worthwhile to labels nowadays. That doesn't leave much room for creativity when it means it might not appeal to consumers. And since radio stations are controlled by the labels, we get force fed worthless, thoughtless crap over and over until it gets stuck in our heads and we fork over our money to buy the crap on Itunes.
Don't get me wrong, I know that there has been good music made since 1998. I was born in 1985, so although I was very young, I did get to experience and enjoy the last couple of years of the 80's. I've been really into music my whole life, starting with New Kids On the Block, Madonna, MJ, Prince, George Michael, Janet... In the 90's I loved TLC, Fiona Apple, Alanis Morrissette... And even when I was in high school, there were a few great singles like "Lady Marmalade" or even "Slave 4 U", although back then 1999-2003 I knew that the majority of popular music was crap. I don't hate pop music at all, but I've always been able to tell the difference between good pop music, and bad pop music. And today, with music being so easy to make, and the music industry dying a painful death and being desperate to make money no matter what it takes, bad pop music reigns supreme.
Sorry, as you can see, this is a topic I'm very passionate about. I hope to be a music producer someday, so I always try to stay current on music trends. But listening to Kiss FM the other day and hearing some song "Meet Me At the Hotel" more than once in the same hour, I just wanted to vomit. It's disgraceful that crap like that could get on popular radio! I'm just scared to think about how much worse it can get in the next decade!

It's so easy to glorify a certain period of time when you weren't actually living in it. I'm pretty damn satisfied being born when I was born...not that I wouldn't have minded switching places with my older sister so I would have been old enough to see Michael live...but that's another story. haha I'll take my ipod over 8 tracks any day.
In the internet age it's just a lot easier for music to spread faster, it's a lot easier for people to record songs and have them all over the radio in no time. There was plenty of horrible, talentless, over-produced, gimmicky music in every time period since the advent of radio, it can just grow more quickly these days.
School dances have always been lame from what I hear. High school in general...most anything glorified in teen movies really is boring in real life. WOW CYNICAL MUCH?
I remember my 8th grade "moving up day" dance. They played Billie Jean and I got go-kart tickets because I knew the name and artist. :D
There is plenty of amazing talent in today's music, you just have to know where to find it and on the MTV or the radio is not always the best place to look.
Really though, the general population will always love whatever is deemed "hot" at the moment no matter how good, bad, mediocre you think it is. Just know that you are the one with taste and it will all sort itself out.

I know in the 90's there were those really big cell phones, like the one they always had on Saved By the Bell. lmao. My parents had one.
There were computers in homes back in the 80's, but internet was not common in households until around 1996. My family didn't get our first dial up connection until '98 or early '99. Before internet, I would just use our computer to type up papers for school or play games.
As much as I love technology nowadays, I know that it's a huge distraction. A couple of school semesters ago, I was walking around my college campus on the first day of school, and noticed that every single person I passed by was either listening to their ipod, texting, or talking on their cell phone. How do you even meet new people or interact with anyone like that? At the grocery store or restaurants I see families with young 11 or 12 year old kids who are busy texting their friends, and aren't even aware of their surroundings or spending time with their family. Or even better yet, I've seen two (sometimes more) teenagers out somewhere together, but instead of actually hanging out or speaking to each other, they're texting OTHER people! It boggles my mind lol.

I love this thread!
I'm 19 and I've always liked music older than my time, not including my Spice Girl and Destiny's Child burst. I feel at home in here :)
But the musicians who have really shaped me are the ones that have lasted, the ones with a craft and message. It started with MJ in 2001 and eventually I got into Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan, The Smiths, The Cure, The Beatles, Kate Bush, David Bowie, Ramones etc etc etc the people whose music and imagine was an ART and not just a marketing tool.
The only "current" bands I listen to are the ones without a enormous mainstream presence (although they do recieve recognition) but are still very successful critically like Antony and the Johnsons (!), Radiohead, Patrick Wolf, yeah yeah yeahs and so on...
I wish the above mentioned could overtake the mass produced RnB and house music or the bubble gum pop. I wish RnB actually had some Rythmn and Blues in it now!! There ARE exceptions like Alicia Keys though, she's amazing :)

Wasn't there internet back then? Or did that come around in the 90's? I'm pretty sure there were computers in the 80's unless I'm wrong. They just weren't as advanced. You definitely couldn't get online in the 80's ;) And while the internet existed earlier in primitive form, the average person wasn't really using it until the late 90's. It was like mid-90's or so when all the www addesses started showing up on advertisements. I got online before any of my friends or family when I forced my computer geek roommate to buy a modem so we could see what the "web" really looked like. And that was early 1996.... and with a less than 100Mhz processor, 8Mb of memory and a 28.8kbps modem. If you know anything about what you're using now you can only laugh your butt off when reading that ;) And someday when we're using holographic 3D quantum computers with direct brain links we can laugh about today's technology ("Haha! Remember when I had that old 4Ghz Pentium quad-core? With just 4 gigs of memory? LOL! And a screen, lol! Remember screens? :hysterical: And remember the music? God, it was really awful there for a while... ")
Oh, I just remembered this book below. I haven't read it, but I heard the author on the radio. The title cracks me up (and is in the spirit of "I hate my generation", so no offense intended ok? lol):
"The Dumbest Generation" http://www.amazon.com/Dumbest-Generation-Stupefies-Americans-Jeopardizes/dp/1585427128/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253551335&sr=8-1

I don't like my generation either. And let me tell you this, the germans have a very VERY bad taste in music. I could post something thats recent, but I don't know I you really want to hear this. Haha!
I guess i'm a veeeery old soul in a young body. Since I was a child I loved listen to Swing, Big Band etc. like the whole 20's era. I also love this 'old Hollywood' music and the whole style. And nobody in my age understands me. It's really annoying. If I meet someone new and if I would tell this person what kind of music I like, I would be called a freak immediatly.
Dont understand me wrong, I do listen to today's music. But I just don't 'feel' it.

There was no internet in the 1980s and the computers back then were the old green screen ones, lol. There was also the flimsy "floppy" disks. There was a channel back then called Music Televison. I wonder what happened to it. I guess it went off the air. :P

Speaking of Computers i think it's kind of funny how that back in the 90's if you owned a computer you were seen as really rich and owning a computer seemed like strange thing (Well from where i come from it did) but now in this day and age it's the other way around where it seen as strange not to own a computer

Oh I know exactly what you mean. I can't stand it when I see a group of people at a time punching away at the buttons on their phones. Sometimes they don't even pick their heads up unless they're the really great texters who can text without looking. lmao. I've known people where I would be talking with them and just having a conversation with them and right in the middle, they'd rudely whip our their phones to answer a text message. Appearently their conversation with that person was more important than mine.
My 7 year old neighbor I mention a few posts ago, she has a cell phone. I didn't get a cell phone until I was atleast 13, when I started actually going places with my friends. But a 7 year old...SEVEN!
I absolutely hate when I'm out with one of my friends and they get a text and keep texting that same person for about 20 minutes. I mean, one text is ok. Maybe a hi or if it's important. But my friends, sometimes the same ones, do this all the time! Might as well just call up the person and talk to them that way.
As far as Ipods go, they're...whatever. I LOVE music, don't get me wrong but, for example: Everyday in school, most of my classmates listen to their ipods (blasting them if you will) until the teacher litterally starts class.
Once again. Ugh...I hate my generation. You also can't have a normal conversation with anybody my age anymore without them using IM language. You know, "OMG!" or any other IM slang terms...
Wow, I sound like an old woman sometimes. :P

haha, I remember floppy disks from Kindergarten! lol. Back in the late 90's I was in Kindergarten and we used them to play these little games. Those things were huge. Sadly, I hardly remember MTV when it actually played music. My parents had MTV on when I was little and it still played music then, but they mostly had VH1 on because it was like "a second MTV" in a way and that's how I got introduced to all of Michael's videos and such.

There is a lot of amazing music out there right now - you just have to know where to look. (i.e. not the radio or mtv, haha).
I think you guys might enjoy this guy.
He draws a lot of inspiration from Al Green, Michael Jackson, Otis Redding, etc. but mixes that sound with "electronic" music (not what you normally think of as being "electronic music" though).
Billie-Jean homage anyone?

I know right? Can you even call them music?
I don't find Usher appealing either. For that matter, I don't really care for any of the artists that are actually considered "good" or "iconic" of this generation. Such as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Britney Spears, Eminem (sadly) etc. I know some...many...will argue with that but the truth is...I really don't see any of them as real artists or that talented for that matter. It's not that I'm comparing any of them to Michael Jackson. It's that their music doesn't compare to ANYTHING before their time. Neither does their talent.
Who's Justin Bieber? I heard his name before, some Freshmen at my school were talking about him. I'm totally clueless. lol.

I hated the keys on those things. They were sometimes so hard to push. :p

I know exactly how you feel, I'm not at all on one line with my generation
I was born in 1990, but I always feel my heart lies somewhere between the 60's, 70's and 80's.
ditto! i was born in 1990 too and have forever been telling everyone that will listen that i wish i was my age now during the 80's so essentially the same age as my mum! the 80's to me was the best because all the artists who were big in the 80's i.e michael, prince, tina turner, whitney even madonna and janet for the most part grew up during the 60's and 70's which really was one of the great era's of music...probably THE best actually so they took what they grew up on and what their parents played around the house, added there own stuff, and it was magic. the 60's truly was the show buisness decade in terms of music, stars really looked like stars, and wore sequins so they could literally shine. all the best 80's stars came from a time where THAT was what real showbuisness looked like. i'm so happy though because it thanks to my mum that i LOVE all the people i just mentioned, aswell as the begees and Dolly Parton because that is what my mum listened around the house when i was growing up, its because of her i love music. the radio was on ALL night long and i'd fall asleep to it which is why to this day i don't need quiet to go to sleep and prefer there to be music playing. My mum's fav's were always (and still) Michael, Tina Turner (she LOVES HER lol), Prince and The Begees and i know all these people's songs off by heart without even trying but its ok because its great music.

I am so with you.. I could just picture this scene you have described, with all your schoolmates running around all brainwashed loving this shit music.. I feel that I'm living in the wrong age as well.. I used to love everything out there.. well that was a long time ago now.. pre-1993.. argh I can't take it.. I just feel sorry for younger kids growing up in this jungle of bad music, where only 2% - no less than 1% is worth listening to:no: or none at all.. can't remember when was the last time I heard some great new music.. And the way the DJ put on Beat It.. and turned it down.. well he is just stupid!!
I hope that we who love and appreciate great music will go to another world far beyong the rainbow one day.. where we will meet Michael and he will do an intimate one night only concert for us (and repeat it again and again :wild:, and there will be Stevie Wonder and we will all be happy and so on... sorry.. Seriously, about 10 guys tried grinding on me and I had to pry their hands off of me. I want a man who can dance, and I mean DANCE! Slow dancing is just horrid with guys of these days. Ugh, they don't even pick up their damn feet. I remember I used to slow dance with a close friend of mine at dances and I would step on his feet all the time because he'd never move at all! One time he even danced with me while drinking a pepsi. *rolls eyes* The swing dance thing does sound like a blast. I'd totally go to one. Back then, guys didn't care about how silly they would look dancing around and having a good time. Now they all think they're "too cool" and they think that any kind of dance that doesn't involve friction between their groin and our asses is lame.

I know, I was pretty pissed about Beat It. He tells people to go out to the lobby to eat while he 'pays a tribute' to "MJ." And then turns it all the way down. That was the only time the whole night I could hear myself talk. >:[
I'm sorry, but I can't stand when people actually say, "MJ" !! On the internet, it's fine but in person, call him Michael! All of my classmates call him MJ and it bothers me so much. I've always preferred the oldies/classics than the mainstream stuff, even when I was a kid. I preferred listening to what my parents listened to. My mom was pretty much the same way, when everyone was listening to mainstream rock, she was listening to Barry Manilow and motown. So she grew up with the Jackson 5. Wish I could have grown up during that time. Music was great then. At least I had a bit of the 80s when I was really little, being born in '85. So early childhood music for me was Michael Jackson, Madonna, Jefferson Starship and Bette Midler. And of course I had vague memories of Bad era Michael, but they were memories all the same that made me fall in love with him.
Then I think it's when you start to get older is when you start becoming a victim of peer pressure. You want to start liking what your friends like. So, by the time I reached middle school, my friends were listening to the likes of N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, and Britney Spears. There was like a big fight over which boy band was better, N'Sync or BSB. There were the N'Sync people and the BSB people. My friend and I were BSB fans and we went to their concert when I was 14, which was at a time when they were starting to die out. It's all pretty silly. Sure I listened to this stuff, and I liked it, but now I wonder how could I have ever liked it hearing now. You just end up going with your friends and what their musical tastes are. Of course it's still better than what's popular in music now. Since the early 2000s, I've only listened to music from the 60s-90s mostly. I don't know much about what's popular now, but I can see that it's not really worth it to know. Lil' Wayne. I don't even really know who he is, nor have I listened to his songs. I've just learned who Lady Ga Ga is from this forum.
Although now I'm looking a bit into mainstream music more because I'm waiting for something to come out that becomes that "next big thing" that's actually worth listening to. Just waiting to see something change in the music industry I guess. I suppose it's just really sad I think Michael Jackson's comeback could have been the thing to do just that. :( Maybe it will still happen.

I'm trying to be optimistic here... :(
These are my predictions....
Electropop will probably continue to dominate the airwaves... Hopefully, autotune users fade away... soon! Hip hop will finally die out due to over-consumption... LOLS! Current Disney stars will become has beens. Hopefully an innovative and cool star comes out....with real talent.

first of all, hey everyone! I'm new on this board *but not a new MJ fan :)*
I couldn't agree with you more court.ney!
I am a freshman in high school and the stuff that I hear is just rediculious!
We had a back to school dance a couple weeks ago and during almost every single song, I was telling my friends "I've never heard this!" they were like freaking out.
And the dancing! Omg it was so rediculious. its disgusting. apparently dancing with a boy doesnt require looking at his face anymore.
But I was totally not feeling the dancing. I am usually a party animal but the music was so bad I just couldnt dance. Then they started playing thriller and everyone screamed and I started getting down. hah. Everyone loved that they were playing mike *thank goodness* but the dude didnt play it anymore :(
But it's crazy because I am always saying how I think I seriously was supposed to be born in the late 50s so that I could be a teenager in the 70s. That just feels like my home you know. I mean I love all the fashions, music, tv shows, just the culture during the 70s. I wish more than anything that I cold have been a teenager back then. I mean I am just in love with Motown. That's all I listen to. Well all I listen to is Michael but my second favorite is the old motown classics. I mean stevie wonder.... and now we have people like kanye west and lil wayne... and the jonas brothers *the worst EVER* uggggg. I just want to scream!
hah 70s please come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And rubbing their crotch against your ass. :p
I can't wait to get to tango!!! ;)

Right on!! :)
I'll take Bowie's theatrics over Lady Gaga any day.
You know, when I first saw her "Just Dance" video where she has a lightning bolt painted on her face, I was hoping that any second Ziggy Stardust would stomp up to her and smack it right off, boa feathers flying everywhere. :hysterical: I don't dislike her as much as I do most artists on the radio today, but if you're going to blatantly rip off an amazing artist such as Bowie like that, then obviously all you care about is being famous without taking the time to be original and create your own image. I think she learned her lesson after that though, since now she wears all of those ridiculous outfits that are at least original if nothing else. :ermm:
It's cool that a couple of high school age posters on here are Bowie fans. I discovered him when I was 8 after seeing Labyrinth, and he's been my favorite artist ever since. In high school, every other outfit I wore was a Bowie tshirt or a Ziggy wanna be glam rock get up. I lived in my platform boots! :D Sure I got some weird looks in high school, but at least I can say that most of the music I listened to back then is still worth listening to!

i understand you are frustrated. i feel the same way... im 16 years old and the crap my classmates are listening to now gives me headache. p-p-p-pokerface, p-p-pokerface.. say what?! the songs have no meaning, the beat usually sounds the same, and the chorus is just the same over and over again. i hate the music of today... sigh. thats why i cant wait til we get michaels new song.
ive actually had a very similar experience, this was after mjs death as well. we were holding this party at my school, and were of course listening to music. music of today! so i got up to the dj and asked him if he could play michael jackson.. he just looked at me like ehh. no. i could totally see he was lying. i said, come on. you must have some mj. and he said "yes, but that would kill the party." that really pissed me off!

I have to say that I'm pretty surprised by stories on here saying that DJs don't want to play MJ songs. The weekend after he passed, I went to a couple of different clubs, and they played lots of MJ. Everyone in the clubs was cheering when they'd come on. There were a lot of people, girls and guys, wearing sequined socks, gloves, and hats. I know that was the weekend after, but considering how much of an impact his death had, I don't see why a DJ would be against playing one song. Then again, people who go to clubs are obviously older, so maybe DJs think that high school kids are too young to appreciate his music?

Does anyone think that the music in the decade of 2010's will be better??? Well, at least better than the music of the 2000's....
A lot of people have been saying this same thing lately. I, honestly, think that maybe it will but I won't speak so soon. I think it will get better but I don't think it will get good. A lot of the artists from the 2000's will die out and many already have (thank God).
Hip-Hop will die. I am sure Miley will too after hannah montana 4, and jonas brothers are already starting to become irrelevant
I agree on this. I remember last year (2008) was almost like 'The Year of the Jonas Brothers' for my generation. I've never heard or listened to their music except I accidentally heard one song before (trust me, it was an accident). I haven't heard a thing about them this year, thankfully. Miley Cyrus...I have nothing to say on her. Sure she's doing Michael tributes and all that but I seriously cannot stand her at all. Her new song that my class is practically obsessed with had to do with one of the head aches I got at that dance. Everybody started screaming when it came on and I was like umm...ok? And they all were screaming, "Miley Cyrus!!" I was thinking, "Wow seriously? How old are we?" The DJ friggen blasted the song and I had to, once again, step out.
I sure hope hip-hop/rap will die. I just want a brand new wave of TALENTED artists to come through and wash all of these crap 'artists' out of their place.
I was on another forum and somebody was calling Beyonce's Single Ladies video, "iconic." PLEASE. I don't find anything "iconic" about any of the artists from the 2000's and I quite like Beyonce. She's actually one of the very FEW artists of today that I like but I wouldn't go as far as saying she's iconic. I know many of you here would probably disagree with me on this but that's how I feel. I also really like Regina Spektor. I think she's great and she deserves more than she gets.

Yep, that's how my friends are too. Sometimes they yell at me for knowing these "things" they call "songs." That's when I pull my ipod out and play my "old people music." If my friends knew that I had Stevie Wonder on my ipod, they'd probably beat me up. lmao. I'd proudly announce to them though because atleast I can say, "I listen to great music!" and it actually be true.

That's ridiculous, these "DJ's" are supposed to play what people request for one thing. It's not about what they want to play.
I remember in 8th grade, the guys in my class all of a sudden became obsessed with Michael Jackson. lol. My parent were in charge of our dances so the music was just awesome. One dance, we played Michael Jackson for most of the night with other great songs in between. That was a great year, those guys were just crazy over Michael Jackson. They used to bust out into one of his songs randomly in class and my teachers would freak out on them. I specifically remember one of my teachers asked something like, "What's the best way to do this?" and someone answered, "Ask Michael Jackson. He's the best at everything." Makes me really smile thinking back on all of this. How much appreciation Michael got from us. :)

Sadly, there is a very big difference between high school kids and the 21+ crowd when it comes to clubs.
The high school kids want to hear what they want to hear and at the same time they don't even really know what they actually want to hear. That probably didn't make sense, but it does to me! lol But yeah...they're finicky and awkward and really difficult to play for when compared to the 21+ crowd who are much more open-minded and easier to keep on the dance floor.
After MJ passed, I played 3 MJ songs that next Friday for a high school crowd. Some of them left the dance floor, but a few stayed and realized the magnitude of his passing. But then as weeks went by, I couldn't play much for them at all besides mixing into Thriller for like a minute or two. Like the DJ said to loveyoumore, when it comes to the teen crowd, it literally could hurt the dance floor. But especially with it being right after Mike's passing, that DJ could have at least mixed into like 1 verse of an MJ song if he tried, but it sounds like he didn't even want to go to the effort to do that or he was too worried to do it. I understand about being worried when it comes to pleasing the teen crowd. I understand that totally.
But like I said, when it comes to the 21+ crowd it's much better. I can play MJ all the time and they feel it.

But he is getting that appreciation again now, people in my class are suddenly into him! I think so many people didnt get the chance to hear his music the last couple of years, u just wouldnt hear it on the music channels or on the radio, all ud get was thriller on halloween or something like that, now people have had the chance to hear him they've realized he is amazing, now hes got a whole new load of fans, its so sad, they didnt get the chance to love him while he was alive. I tried to show my friends how amazing he was when he was here but they wouldnt listen, but now they have they love him!

Anyways, I miss Mike.... T_T
I doubt it 2007 was bad and 2008 was crap and this year please. And it took Jay-z to make death of auto tune for some rappers to stop using it smh. These rappers need to stop looking at Jay-z to save hip hop and step up.I really do want in 2010 for R&B to be back n the forefront. As far as Disney the jonas brothers are my gulity pleasure (Joe really)but they are fading you can tell.

That sounds pretty amazing. I hope so too. :)
None of them are actual fans either. This one girl always tries to imitate Michael's moves and says she loves Michael Jackson and then says that the only songs she likes from him is Billie Jean and Thriller. Makes a lot of sense huh? Actually, the only songs that any of my classmates like by Michael are Billie Jean and Thriller, because there were discussing it one day. I wanted to be like, "Yep, I love Earth Song" just to see the looks on their faces.
Another reason to hate my generation. They claim to like Michael Jackson, but say that the only songs they like are Billie Jean and Thriller.
Yeah it sounds pretty stupid when people call Michael MJ, I think the guitarist from This Is It said it as well, it sounded really weird to me.. and she even worked with him... I don't like it either when people call him Mike.. I think the only ones who should call him that are his family..just my opinion.
Consider yourself lucky that you know better than your classmates, that YOU KNOW that ALL of Michael's songs are worth listening to and loving. I can't come up with one song of Michael's that I don't like.. your musicality (is it called that..sorry I'm not english) is what will qualify you to go to this land of hope where we will meet Michael again... hehe :D
KEEP THE FAITH!! IT WILL HAPPEN!!
the others will stay here and listen to Jay-Z and Eminem :hysterical:

Funny you mentioned that because after they talked about their "favorite" songs by him, they went on for about 10 minutes about how much they hated, 'Man In The Mirror' because it was "waaaay too slow." They obviously don't listen to the lyrics or find the real meaning in older songs either! MITM has a great message behind it and I can't believe how many people my age fail to see it. Just because it's not an annoying upbeat, fast-pace song, they don't like it. I had to sit there and listen to them speak ill of an amazing, meaningful song for 10 minutes. I was going to say something but it wasn't worth it. :p haha.
For me, that just really proved (to me) that most people from my generation don't care about the meaning or messages behind songs. As long as it sounds good and it something they can dance to, it's "a good song." They wouldn't know the meaning of a good song if it came up and bit them in the ass. I also believe that's why music is the way it is today. Because nobody really cares anymore...as long as it sounds good to them they'll buy it. It's upsetting really how low music has sunk.

I totally agree.. I don't know if you should stand up and tell them like it is that Man in the mirror is an AMAZING song.. you could say.. : " I just KNOW for a fact that this song is AMAZING, I feel sorry for all of you, if you are not able to hear it.. "

I don't like putting down any fans because we all love and appreciate Michael but still...when you meet ones in person like the ones I know...you really just want to scream.
Quoted for truth IMHO.

I feel your pain, seriously. A lot of music these days is total crap. But there is some good stuff out there, you just have to search for it. I'm sure even Michael had some favourites from today, since he was working with Akon and whatnot.
But still. I wish I was an 80's teen. :( I'm waiting for time machines to kick into existence.

Me and a couple of friends always go charity shopping to get some 80's, 70's clothes, its the best!

I agree with what everyone is saying, im 24 and im just sick of all this mainstream, commercialized GARBAGE that is being put out these days!! i mean sure there are couple of good gems here and there but thats it.The problem in our society is that people simply don't value real music anymore, they've been brainwashed by "music" that has no message because these companies don't want people to think they rather speak about materialism, party, sex,"whats in" then to have music based on creativity and music that has messages wether it be personal or political because honestly it is these record labels and companies that are looking to dumb down people.

They were called The Noisettes, they have a really retro flavour, and the lead vocalist really made my faith in the old fashioned ladies who can sing LIVE with feeling come back with force. The only up to date band im into really is The Kings Of Leon, but ive loved them for a few years now and have been to see them there amazing live, im so disoppointed with there latest songs though, i only like there older albums and im so angry, i feel like my good band are being pulled ito the trap of todays popular music!!!!!
The music industry is only going to get WORSE - especially with things like the X-FACTOR deliberately looking for ready-made comercial image/sound poptential that they can sign and control - im supprised sony isnt involved with the x-factor in some way.

I'm quite lucky. I'm 18 and all my friends and classmates respect Michael Jackson, even before he passed away we watched Moonwalker in Class as it was the end of the year and we were just chilling out. I was really suprised that this kid had put it on, didn't even know he was a fan! Whenever I go out on the town and into clubs, I'm always guaranteed to hear at least 2/3 Michael songs, I have heard Black & White, Scream, Wanna Be Starting Something,Billie Jean,Bad/You Rock My World,J5 songs and believe it or not even Man In The Mirror twice in two different clubs from the start to finish un mixed, it worked. People danced to it! Once they were playing that part of Human Nature where MJ really shows off his voice over a random r'n'b rap and hip hop songs I got really excited but they never actually played Human Nature :( Also heard Michael being blasted out of car sound systems going up and down the town centre frequently, in lots of restaurants.. MJ, kill a party? No way. We had Thriller/Wanna Be Starting Something/Bad/Billie Jean at our prom and everyone was going willd so much more then when they were playing stuff from other artists! I've had so many people want to buy my MJ T Shirt or ask where I got it from.
You should come move to our town.. My townspeople have a good taste in music :D

I'm 15 and I really hate this generation's taste in music! They need to educate themselves about MUSIC, not some electronic junk.

LOL I am annoyed by the same thing. The music that's out today is rediculous. There's a few good songs, but 80% of it is CRAP. And I am someone who listens to a broad range of music...........I like many artists.

it's funny how everyone here only mentions fashion and music as the main reason why they hate their generation, is that all there is to life? that alone says a lot about young people today

I thoroughly enjoyed being a teenager in the '80's and consider myself lucky to have had that experience, but just because your friends don't appreciate the music from then doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't enjoy it! Also, I've come across a decent number of younger people on this forum and others who have impressed me with their knowledge of and love for 80's music - so if you seek out people with similar musical taste, I'll bet you can find at least a few. :)

I dont like today's music.
But this is your decade. Embrace it, you only get to be young once and you want to be able to sit with your friends at the retirement home when your older reminiscing about the stupid stuff from your childhood.
The 80's look cool to you but i guarantee the people who grew up then used to say the same things
"Man I wished i lived in the 60's when the beatles where around, now adays all we have is Michael Jackson, pfft!"
So appreciate what you have, you only get to be young once.

Of course there's more to life!! But this thread is about the music culture of this generation so we're talking about it. I am very capable of discussing other aspects of life and I am sure other posters are too... but in THIS thread we have created a discussion about mainstream music culture and a general disliking for the music that recieves airplay and attention.
If you would like to discuss something with a different focus that affects young people today then feel free to begin another thread with a different theme :) I'll join you. I love aaall kinds of discussion, I'm educated and socially aware. We all know there's more to life, we're just discussing ONE aspect. :)

In general, music in the 2000s has been complete dog sh*t. I love 70s, 80s and 90s music the best, especially 90s. The only years of music that I like from the 2000s are from the years 2000-2003 and some of 2004. After that, most music, in my opinion, went straight to hell.

Agreed. I love 70's, 80's, and 90's music. Such good, "clean" music that doesn't result in headaches after 5 minutes of listening to it. ha. There's only a few songs from the early 2000's that I really like.
Mainstream radio drives me absolutely crazy. That is all my friend listens to and everytime I'm with her, she has it playing on her mp3. They repeat the same songs over and over again. Sometimes two of the stations are playing the same song at the same time. Drives me crazy.

I am so disgusted by the mainstream radio! Can't listen to it as well, when I was little and we were in the car I used to nag at my parents every 5 minutes to PLEASE change the radio frequency 'cuz I really went nuts of all the bullshit.
They quickly found out it was better to give me a walkman instead...LOL. Houuurs I've been taping the only songs off the radio I wanted.
Good 'ol times....:hysterical:

Don't even f*cking get me started on mainstream radio. That's the reason why I RARELY listen to the radio anymore. I need radio stations with variety. I don't want to only hear stuff from 2009! I want to also hear stuff from previous years. For example, I remember in high school when "Sexyback" by Justin Timberlake was played AT LEAST 10-15 times an hour! I'm like, "Jesus Christ! You do know there's OTHER music out there too don't you?!". I believe that's why the only radio stations I listen to are an old school radio station back in my hometown (60's, 70's, 80's, 90's & early 00's R&B, Soul, Funk and some Pop/Rock), a radio station that plays hits from the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's, and a soft rock station that plays songs from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's. I'm sorry, but I NEED variety. The radio NEEDS more variety; they should really mix up the old with the new. But since most radio stations don't do this, I listen to my iPod 24/7.

OMG! We share the same hate... I hate radio stations especially the one that claims, "we bring you the greatest hits every day all the time.." Bleh! No, you don't!!!! I cant believe at how much the quality of music has decreased. It's so sad... The 2000's is probably the worst decade for music, overall.

I was a teenager in the 80s and spent two-and-a-half hours in
the bathroom on Friday nights doing my hair before going out.
I even tried paper glue once ( don't ask).
I remember seeing Bubbles in a magazine and going home with a
drum stick from Iggy Pop's concert. LOL
It was fun. YES :)

Well, up until 1982 I was a teen in the 80's. So I just qualify for this thread. Although the music was great they were not easy times. Being a teen is a real drag in general. I didn't even go to my high school prom (1982). I don't envy you teens today for your music but I do envy that you have the internet. There was no internet when I was in school. How lucky you are in that way. :)
Anyway, I quit listening to radio on a regular basis in the early 90's. That's when popular music started to take a bad turn. I feel fortunate that I got to witness 60's, 70's and 80's music as it happened. It wasn't all great. There were some really bad songs then too. But it was fun and mostly non-offensive.
I'm 16. I would like to lived in 70s or 80s... My generation is so silly and have no sense and talent ¬¬

I was definitely born in the wrong generation, I just feel like I can't connect with my generation. I mean I don't drink, smoke or do drugs and yet I'm ridiculed for it. Whenever I tell someone I don't drink I'm greeted with gasps of astonishment and then what usually follows is a discussion on why exactly I don't drink and that I should. It makes me so mad, I don't tell people how to live their lives so why do they tell me how to live mine? Shouldn't it be the other way round anyway? Shouldn't people be more shocked if you do drink? It doesn't say much for society, it's falling apart around us.
I feel like I should have been born in the fifties as I think they had slightly better morals back then and I loved the music and fashion, however I also love the eighties for music so it's a tough one for me but it would be anywhere between the fifties and eighties.

That really sucks that people would try to "convert" you. But all that stuff was popular in the 80s, 70s, and 60s too. I guess the 50s would be a fun place to live... if you're fortunate enough to be white, otherwise you're a 2nd class citizen ;).
