Roundup Kills More Than Weeds
Alarming new research on the health hazards of Roundup weed killer is shining a harsh light on a regulatory process that was meant to protect us.
December 2009/January 2010
By Amanda Kimble-Evans
To protect our health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets maximum legal residue levels for every pesticide, for dozens of crops. But a new study in the respected journal Toxicology has shown that, at low levels that are currently legal on our food, Roundup could cause DNA damage, endocrine disruption and cell death. The study, conducted by French researchers, shows glyphosate-based herbicides are toxic to human reproductive cells.

The Story of Stuff Project THANK YOU for all the web traffic and buzz! We've had so many visits that our server can't even contain itself! We'll be back up soon but in the meantime, you can watch Story of Bottled Water here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se12y9hSOM0 Thanks!
The Story of Bottled Water (2010)
www.youtube.com
http://storyofbottledwater.org The Story of Bottled Water, released on March 22, 2010 (World Water Day) employs the Story of Stuff style to tell the story of manufactured demand—how you get Americans to buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week when it already flows from the tap. .....
Today is World Water Day, and to mark the occasion I'm joining with some of North America's leading environmental groups to release the latest Story of Stuff Project short film: The Story of Bottled Water.
Like The Story of Stuff, this new film uses simple words and images to explain a complex problem, in this case manufactured demand: how you get people to think they need to spend money on something they don't actually need or already have.
Over the last two decades, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle and other big beverage companies have spent untold millions of dollars making us afraid of tap water. They've told us that if we want to be sure what we drink is pure and clean-not to mention hip and fashionable-we should buy bottled water.
Unfortunately, it worked.
In the United States alone, we consume approximately 500,000,000 bottles of water each week. Imagine that: while 1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water worldwide, other people spend billions of dollars on a bottled product that's no cleaner, harms people and the environment and costs up to 2,000 times the price of tap water.
But there's good news: Last year, for the first time in a long time, bottled water sales fell-not that much, but they went down. Consumers who want economy, portability and convenience are switching to refillable metal bottles. Restaurants are proudly serving tap water. And cities, states, companies and schools around the world are ditching the bottle to save money and do their part for the environment.
Still, we've got a ways to go.
So please, take a minute today to watch The Story of Bottled Water. Then pass it along to your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers-anyone you think might be interested.
You are The Story of Stuff Project's strongest allies: You made the original Story of Stuff an Internet phenomenon, with nearly 9 million views total. Last December, you pushed The Story of Cap & Trade past half a million views in just under six weeks. And in the last ten days, you've helped our new book, The Story of Stuff, enter the New York Times extended bestseller list at #35. Thank you a million times over.
After you've forwarded The Story of Bottled Water to your networks, I encourage you to join a campaign for investment in clean tap water for everyone, like those sponsored by our partners at Corporate Accountability International, Food & Water Watch, Polaris Institute, Environmental Working Group, and Pacific Institute. Visit these fantastic groups' websites to learn more, sign-up and get involved.
Together, we can send Coke, Pepsi, Nestle and the rest of the industry a message as clear as a glass of tap water: We're not buying into your manufactured demand anymore. We'll choose our own demands, thank you very much, and we're demanding clean safe water for all!
Sincerely,
Annie Leonard
P.S. It takes a pretty penny to make and distribute these short films. After The Story of Bottled Water we have films coming on electronics (planned obsolescence anyone?), personal care products and more. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to The Story of Stuff Project today to help us keep these films coming and on-line for free.

We have a problem with Stuff. With just 5 percent of the world’s population, we’re consuming 30 percent of the world’s resources and creating 30 percent of the world’s waste.
If everyone consumed at U.S. rates, we would need three to five planets! This alarming fact drove Annie Leonard to create the Internet film sensation The Story of Stuff, which has been viewed over 10 million times by people around the world.
In her sweeping, groundbreaking book of the same name, Leonard tracks the life of the Stuff we use every day — where our cotton T-shirts, laptop computers, and aluminum cans come from, how they are produced, distributed, and consumed, and where they go when we throw them out.
The Story of Stuff is a landmark book that will change the way people think — and the way they live....

Iceland Volcano Erupts Again : Discovery News

ICELAND VOLCANO ERUPTS AGAIN
Wed Apr 14, 2010 12:15 PM ET
Content provided by Gudjon Helgason and Jill Lawless, Associated Press
The eruption under the ice cap was 10 to 20 times more powerful than one last month.
THE GIST:
For the second time in less than a month, a volcano under a glacier in Iceland has erupted.
About 800 residents from around Eyjafjallajokull were evacuated.
There were no immediate signs of large clouds of volcanic ash, which could disrupt air travel.
A volcano under a glacier in Iceland erupted Wednesday for the second time in less than a month, melting ice, spewing smoke and steam, closing a major road and forcing hundreds of people to flee rising floodwaters.
Authorities evacuated 800 residents from around the Eyjafjallajokull glacier as rivers rose by up to 10 feet (3 meters).
Emergency officials and scientists said the eruption under the ice cap was 10 to 20 times more powerful than one last month, and carried a much greater risk of widespread flooding.
"This is a very much more violent eruption, because it's interacting with ice and water," said Andy Russell, an expert in glacial flooding at the University of Newcastle in northern England. "It becomes much more explosive, instead of a nice lava flow oozing out of the ground."
WATCH VIDEO: Underwater volcanic eruptions and magma flows on the sea floor have been seen for the first time ever thanks to video captured by NOAA.

Rognvaldur Olafsson, a chief inspector for the Icelandic Civil Protection Agency, said no lives or properties were in immediate danger. Scientists said there was no sign of increased activity at the much larger Katla volcano nearby.
Iceland's Meteorological Office said a plume of steam rose at least five miles (eight kilometers) into the air. Scientists aboard a Coast Guard plane that flew over the volcano said the new fissure appeared to be up to 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) long.
There were no immediate signs of large clouds of volcanic ash, which could disrupt air travel between Europe and North America. Some domestic flights were canceled, but Iceland's international airport remained open.
The volcano, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) east of Reykjavik, erupted March 20 after almost 200 years of silence.
The original eruption petered out earlier this week. But Gunnar Gudmundsson, a geophysicist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said there were a series of tremors overnight, and rivers in the area began rising Wednesday morning -- strong evidence of a new eruption under the glacier.
Last month's eruption struck near the glacier in an area that had no ice. Gudmundsson said the new eruption appeared to be about eight or nine kilometers (five to six miles) west of the original fissure.
"Most probably this eruption is taking place at the summit ... under the ice," he said.
Pall Einarsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland, said magma was melting a hole in the 650-foot (200-meter) thick ice covering the volcano's crater, sending floodwater coursing down the glacier into lowland areas.
Residents were evacuated to a Red Cross center in the nearby community of Hvolsvollur, the Civil Protection Agency said.
Iceland's main coastal ring road was closed near the volcano, and workers smashed a hole in the highway in a bid to give the rushing water a clear route to the coast and prevent a major bridge from being swept away.
Iceland, a nation of 320,000 people, sits on a large volcanic hot spot in the Atlantic's mid-oceanic ridge. Volcanic eruptions are often triggered by seismic activity when the Earth's plates move and when magma from deep underground pushes its way to the surface.
The last time there was an eruption near the 100-square-mile (160 square-kilometer) Eyjafjallajokull glacier was in 1821.
A bigger worry is Katla, which in the past has erupted in tandem with Eyjafjallajokull.
Katla is located under the vast Myrdalsjokull ice cap. An eruption could cause widespread flooding and disrupt air traffic between Europe and North America.
The last major eruption took place in 1918, and vulcanologists say a new blast is overdue.
"So far there have been no signs of the reawakening of the Katla volcano, but a lot of things can still happen, so we are monitoring it quite closely," Einarsson said.

END CHILD LABOR: EVERY CHILD DESERVES THE CHANCE TO GO TO SCHOOL
I am not talking about working with their parents in a shop or the farm on the weekend...I am talking about kids who are sold to traffickers to harvest crops, girls who are sold into prostitution, boys of 9 and 10 who are taken from their homes by defense forces, or so-called liberation armies, to be "child soldiers" - this has to stop and we are committed to it.
- Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers
No Limits is proud to join our friends, the United States Department of State, Department of Labor, the American Federation of Teachers, and the International Labor Rights Forum to sponsor an important conference today, June 8th, at the Department of State: Working Together to End Child Labor: It's Time to End the Exploitation of Children.
Conference participants will consider the most effective policies and strategies to protect children around the world from child labor, especially its most dangerous and abusive forms; and to open the doors of education to every child, girls as well as boys.
• 72 million children of primary school age are not in school, denied even the most basic education. Most are girls: as the economic crisis worsens, girls are more likely to be taken out of school, to save school fees or help with chores. In areas hit by HIV/AIDs, girls leave school to care for AIDS orphans whose parents have died of the disease.
• 200 million children around the world are used in child labor; more than half in the most dangerous and exploitative kinds of work. See their faces:

June 12th marks the Global Day Against Child Labour. We'll be sending you a report on the conference and our recommendations for action.
WOMEN'S HEALTH: AN UPDATE AND AN ALERT
Speaking on our members-only conference call, Senator Barbara Mikulski talked about the Mikulski Amendment in the health care reform bill, which guarantees preventive care and screenings for both men and women at no out-of-pocket cost or co-pay. The amendment is scheduled to take effect six months after the bill's passage.
Now the Department of Health and Human Services is working out what will be included in this important provision. It seems pretty obvious that family planning is preventive care, and most Americans agree. According to a recent poll conducted for Planned Parenthood, 79 percent of women believe family planning is preventive care, and 74 percent of women and men support it being covered at low or no-cost by health insurance.
Yet some anti-choice groups are opposed to the coverage of contraception under this amendment - even though reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies also reduces the number of abortions!
Decisions made by HHS in the next few months will ensure that women's health is fully included in any definition of preventive care - and we'll be watching! Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said, "This is finally the moment to address a fundamental problem facing millions of American women: they need birth control, but for too many women it is not easily accessible or affordable."
JOIN OUR NEXT CALL
We're starting to plan our next members-only call now. Will you be on it? Join No Limits now: Support our work on projects like ending child labor, and speaking up for human rights at home and around the world.
HILLARY ADDRESSES THE FIRST U.S.-INDIA STRATEGIC DIALOGUE
Continuing her work to strengthen alliances with America's partners, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton opened the first-ever U.S.-India Strategic Dialogue at the State Department, noting that India is the world's largest democracy:
"Our governments collaborate on nearly any issue you can name," she said, "from fighting terrorism to empowering women to eradicating disease to monitoring the weather to improve crop forecasting. Indeed, India holds a very special place in the hearts of many Americans, including me. My first trip to India 15 years ago was a transforming experience for me and for my daughter, and then for my husband when he was able to go in the year 2000...Together, I believe the discussions that we have in these dialogues will help shape the future of our own nations and improve the lives of millions of Americans and Indians and help also to determine the course of the world in this century. This is both our opportunity and our responsibility."

GAY PRIDE MONTH AND A HISTORIC YEAR FOR LGBT EQUALITY
June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, an opportunity to celebrate historic strides for LGBT equality while reminding us of the work that still needs to be done, here at home and around the world. As Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in releasing the Human Rights Report: "The idea of human rights begins with a fundamental commitment to the dignity that is the birthright of every man, woman and child."
Among the good news:
• Making Clear that LGBT Rights are Human Rights: In March, the State Department's annual Human Rights Report - the most comprehensive record of human rights practices around the world - contained for the first time in the report's 34-year history documented "societal abuses, discrimination, and acts of violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity", making clear that LGBT rights are indeed human rights. (For an annotated version of the report that reflects all of the LGBT references in the various country reports, check out this document prepared by The Council on Global Equality.)
• Showing International Opinion Can Make a Difference: Last week, Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalang of Malawi were pardoned, after having sentenced to prison for fourteen years, with hard labor, because of their wish to be in a committed relationship. The United States had strongly criticized the court's action as did UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
• Moving to End Don't Ask Don't Tell: The House of Representatives voted to repeal the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, which has caused the expulsion of thousands of LGBT Americans from military service. The Senate Armed Services Committee has also voted to begin the process of repeal. This issue will now be decided before the full Senate. Repealing DADT is both the right thing but also the smart thing to do, because America is stronger when everyone has a chance to serve.
THANK YOU
In our last newsletter we asked you to write or call your Senators and ask them to sign the bipartisan letter supporting full funding for the International Affairs Budget, which funds State Department operations. The letter was originally circulated by Senators Kerry, Lugar, Bond, Durbin, and Feinstein.
You were not alone in making this request: every former Secretary of State, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Mike Mullen, and more than 50 retired military officers also weighed in, making the case that Hillary's "smart power" policies will make American stronger and safer. And you were heard: 37 members of the Senate signed the letter - nearly triple the number of Senators who signed a similar letter last year!
THE LAST WORD
"I came across a quote which I think summarizes what we feel. Mark Twain once wrote, 'India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great-grandmother of tradition.' And I love the fact that it's mothers..."

That´s great news.
They could have done a lot more research about electronic things and the environment long time ago.
It can´t be impossible to build computers, mobils etc where you can recycle every part of it.
If someone find out about that ,it´s worth Nobels peaceprice.
