When Dangerous was released...
What was it like at school, college, work or wherever you were at the time?
Was it highly anticipated? Was everyone talking about it all the time?
Stuff like that...
I wouldn't know because I was -2 years old. <_<

I became a fan in 1990, I fell in love with Dirty Diana and Smooth Criminal.. I was only 10 in 1991, but what I remember is people (my age anyway) was like "Michael Jackson is sooo yesterday, my parents/older siblings liked him" until Black Or White came out, and then everyone was suddenly into him, and wanted my MJ t-shirt :P:lol:
I was at school back then and yes, sure, there was a lot of anticipation, everybody was wondering what Dangerous would be like. Then the B&W video came out and well... you know, it was a major issue and there was all this negative talk about its violence, etc. So in my little country they show the uncensored version and then only the "short" version. The video was a hit, but Remember the time was even BIGGER and BETTER! For B&W we were all amazed by the morphing thing, which was so new back then. To have Mac in the video was also a major thing. Besides all these, you had all the anticipation about Michael's appearance.
"How would he look now?" a MAJOR concern... and once the video was release people were all surprised.... "Now he IS white!!!!! That is why he sings "It doesn't matter if your are black or white"!!!! :o"
So it was difficult, since people (media) would focous so much on his appearance and the "violence" of B&W.
But it was a GREAT time anyway!! That was the time I became really interested in Michael, that was the first cassette I got from him (yes!! a cassette, I still have it :)) The whole Dangerous concept was incredible. It's cover!! Full of hidden surprises. I remember people on TV or the radio discussing abou the meaning of each item. "The number 7 is for..." "Then you have Bubbles here..." "And this child..."
How many times would you hear B&W on the radio? Some 1000 times a week. Maybe more :D It was on top of all charts (at least in my country) and it was ALL about Michael Jackson. Back then there was a music program on TV and MJ would have 3 or 4 hits on its top 20.
And then... Dangerous tour made the impossible come true. He came to our country, so far, far away from everywhere :) and the Michaelmania was completely out of control. So Dangerous is MY Michael golden time!!

Do you mean his golden suit for Dangerous tour? That was strange for me...
Ohhh... and what about "Remember the time" and...THE KISS!!!! :o
it was THE kiss!!! And people were like.... WHAAAAAAAAATTT???? Did they really kiss each other???? Did she kiss him?? OMG!!!! :O
Worldwide shock. First "real" MJ kiss on the screen. Then "others" came...
And when we thought it was such a shock, Mike came out with "In the closet" ... and if people hated Iman... then it all turned against Naomi!! What a sexy video!!!

I remember that Moonwalker was actually still quite popular around that time over here in Sweden - it had hit the satellite cable networks and they aired it like 2 times a month for 1-2 years, haha.
I was in second garde when Dangerous was released, and it wasn't many people around my age that were fans at school - most people that even were into music were into Metallica and rock stuff.
Those who weren't into music were into TV shows like Beverly Hills 90210, Baywatch, Zorro or cartoons. (I was a huuuge Turtles fan :D)
People like me who were born in 83 really didn't get into music until around that time anyway - most kids don't really have any favourite artists unless your parents have introduced them to you - they just listen to anything the TV or radio plays.
What I remember from that time was that MTV had a lot of coverage for the release, and they showed how they went from store to store talking to retailers. (I think I've seen that footage floating around on this board or on youtube somewhere)
What I remember from Black & White was that the media made a havoc of the panther dance sequence with Michael touching himself - and the same time they really started with that "oh so he is white now, then why is he singing about it doesn't matter if your black or white?".
Everything around that particular time are all very vague memories for me - but we as fans had an amazing year ahead of us with Michael releasing video after video.
I mean, you didn't even have time to get bored with a video until he released the next one - and just when you thought it couldn't get any better, Michael decides to air the Dangerous Tour in 92 on satellite TV.
That was a point when many people in my school became fans, it was like "Did you see that concert the other night?!"
But now I'm getting ahead of the topic, so I'm gonna stop there - I hope some people come in here and refresh my memory about the release :)

( Sorry I just had to  )
Y'all should be glad you weren't born in the 50's or 60's - you'd be having other issues right now instead
But the music - I'm glad I still got to experience a couple of years of at least semi-pure music on the radio, before it really started going to hell in the mid 90's.
I bet those who could hear ABC and I'll Be There on the radio are pretty upset set about that "Prince crap" they played in the 80's and 90's though
EDIT: Oh how stupid I am - it's those who we're born in the 50's and especially 60's that probably really were into Prince

I wish i lived in that time, i was born in 1995.
Dangerous is like my favorite era, and i wasn't even born yet.
My brothers and my father told so many stories about that time, when my brothers school was all hooked up on Jam, Black or White and all the other songs.
and the concerts my father went to and all that. :)
I wish i lived in that time, to experience all of those great times :)

I was born in 1988 but I still remember very vividly the atmosphere back in 1991. Not particularly the Dangerous album but just that whole grunge movement of the early 90s. And MJ of those days I felt, looking back ofcourse, was different from the 80s MJ. He had more of a rock edge to him. The Dangerous album is truly a work of art. Especially the album cover which continues to amaze me to this day. I wish we could have a thread regarding the making of that album and the events/hype that took place during that time.
And regarding MJ's Dangerous tour outfit, lool..I remember when I first showed my mom the bucharest concert she was just like.."uhhh..what is he wearing exactly?" she had been used to a more "conservative" mj look like from the bad tour/era :D.

auuuuu!!!!
Well... back then I was too young to really understand what "sexy" was hahahaha!! LOL!! I just fully understood the concept way later. I liked "In the closet", but Remember the time was incredible. If we had been shocked by the morphing in BOW, the trick of MJ throwing this black sand, stepping on it, dissapearing and then appearing out of gold... amazing!! I was so, so surprised! The video is sooo good. I loved Smooth Criminal, but Remember the time got me crazy.
... and you can tell how many times I tried and tried to make the dance of RTT... and my results were... ok, I am better at drinking water :D

Yup, the Black and white premiere sticks out the most.
back then my folks did not have cable(which really sucked)so no music channels. but it was so interesting how Michaels videos used to premiere in regular prime-time. i forgot what channel it was on,...maybe FOX? that was so huge to premiere his videos like that.(and unique compared to other artists. i really, really miss those days. Everyone got to know his art form even without MTV, and became fans. that's how huge this man was, ...is.
i also remember Michael and macualy culkin being in the news with being friends, haha, i was this huge fan of 'home alone' as a kid and thought mac was so adorable (particularly since we were around the same age then, and michael was hot, so i thought that was pretty cool that they hung out. lmao. god. i was such a little girl then.
and that album! oooooooh i bought it on cassette tape and played it over and over and over again. i really miss the 80's and 90's with michaelmania. i can't stress that enough, it was the last good era's in america. im so happy i was atleast old enough to remember bits of that time and become a fan really early.

I was 14-15 at this time. I still remember "MJ's parties" in my home, "Moonwalker", bad quality videos from MTV and the dances on the table and the lipsticks signs on big poster on the door of my room . When I got the Dangerous album I was like in heaven and listened again and again. It was incredible. And remember how me and my friend kept a tape of the B or W video in my cupboard. I waited for Dangerous tour and had a dream to see Michael live but my parents didin't allow me to go to the Germany to the concert. So I saw him later... I was soo disapointed at this time and was almost crazy from all excerpts of the concerts i had at this time .
P.S. I lived in just collapsed USSR at this time and it wasn't easy to get the stuff regarding MJ at this time. Bzz he was the enemy of "soviet society" .

Dangerous was an event - everyone was awaiting the video & music.
I was in NYC, was 20 years old at the time, and my friends & I went over a friend's house & watched the premiere of B & W. SPECTACULAR video, and stands the test of time.
And when the CD dropped, we all bought it & played it out - we all were fawning at how CUTE MJ looked & melting over "Remember the Time"
Then when the "Remember the Time" video came out - OMG. Massive girly fan explosion. We all wanted to learn the choreography and when we'd go out clubbing, we'd bust the Remember the TIme choreography and have giggle fits each time one of us would bust a move.
Good times - GREAT MUSIC.

Yes, yes... MJ was a different MJ from the one of the 80's.

My daughter was born in 1996. She grown up with MJ's music and video and even cant imagine life without him. I was 11 years old when the Dangerous era had started. But for some strange I can only remember almost half of it. But it was really awesome. I don't remember seeing the world premiere of the Black Or White video. But I do remember seeing the world premiere of the videos for Jam and Remember The Time. And OMG were they ever so awesome to see them. I even remember seeing the In The Closet video back in Spring of 92. And Michael's Dangerous Bucharest Concert at my cousin's house since I didn't have HBO at the time. And I even remember seeing the MJ Simpsons episode that Michael did when it first aired. I even remember seeing the commercial for Michael's Dangerous Short Films VHS tape. There was phone number for you to call and order it. And OMG did I ever so wanted that video tape. Of course I have also seen the Oprah interview back then. And that was really awesome to see that interview. It still remains my number 1 favorite MJ interview.
I had so many great memories during the Dangerous Era. Just like the 80s the Dangerous Era was still a great time to be a Michael Jackson fan. I am so glad I was born in 1980.

One thing that annoys me is when people say that with Dangerous, he changed his musical style too much...but if he didn't, then he'd of been slated by critics for 'not evolving or whatever (which is what I think they said about Invincible!)
He's a clever man, he knows what's going on in the music scene and needed to change his style to appeal to a wider audience, so that's what he did, making Dangerous a bit more "Rock" & "Rap".
I personally think it's his best album...however it always seems to be ignored by the media, it's always only Thriller and Bad that tend to get mentioned in any sense.

I was only 4, but I have a question. I understand that Michael told Oprah that he had vitiligo in 1993, was there no mention of vitiligo before this because the Black or White video came out in 1991 and a few comments on here stated how he was so much lighter than ever before. If I remember right there was some stir about how light he was in the BAD era and music video/album cover. Any help on this would be appreciated

So many great memories when Dangerous came out. I'm old enough to remember it, I was 5 at the time, and I remember jumping up and down when Black and White first came on I was so excited. My dad had the album and I literally used to spend hours with it blaring in the living room and staring at the CD cover. My dad also had the tape and when we were in the car I demmanded that my dad put Dangerous on over my mums Simply Red album. She wasn't too thrilled that she kept getting outvoted! And I used to drive my parents crazy as all I ever did when BOW came out was sing it. Over and over and over again!

I can tell you that this is true.
I was a junior in high school when BAD came out - and me being the hardcore fan since my early childhood, I was SHOCKED.
There was no internet, no nothing except MTV. And MJ was not to be seen anywhere before the BAD album cover.
And when Michael appeared on the BAD cover - after not seeing him since the Victory tour photos, it was shocking to see the transformation.
At first, I did believe the rumors - that he was ashamed of his roots - but that all changed when I heard the MUSIC. That did it for me - because Michael transcended the physical - it became spiritual for him and for all of us who love him.
The BAD album is an incredible album - then to add the kung-fu kick of the BAD tour & Moonwalker movie, WOW.
WOW.
Michael was crucified because he wanted to defend his private life and medical history. How would anyone like it if their medical illnesses were made public? He did what he had to do.
Anyway - that's my take. Any other oldies want to share their stories???

Hmm 1991. What the heck was I doing back then? I had just finished four (plus) agonizing, torturous years of college (by the skin of my teeth) and was enjoying my new found freedom from text books and tests and annoying professors with speech impediments. I had begun to work full time and earning full-time pay which was really nice. Yep, no internet back then. How did we ever survive??? I didn't have internet until 1996! Oh, college would have been such a breeze for me had I only had the internet. You lucky kids today!!! LOL!!!
Now, as far as Michael Jackson's Dangerous goes, I remember watching the Black or White video and how everyone was talking about the morphing faces and all the effects in the video (sorry, I know MJ referred to them as his short films but I am just used to saying videos).
I really, really remember "Remember The Time" and really loving the dancing and the cast in that video. That song is so great. My niece was a pre-teen then and was into dance and she used to mimic the dance steps of MJ's RTT video and Madonna's videos and I would "direct" or "choreograph" her...just for fun. Of course, she doesn't remember all this now.
Of course, I know the other releases from the CD, Jam, Heal The World, Will You Be There, Give In To Me, Gone Too Soon...but specific memories of those days in relation to those songs are fading away while my gray hairs grow brighter and brighter.:mello:

Everything MJ did was EPIC, since the day he was born in Gary, Indiana.

Tell me about it!
It really is kind of strange to be on a fan message board where other fans of this icon are teenagers and I am an aging baby boomer. I guess that's one of the great things about Michael - his fans span all ages.

I remember the time! Heh! I loved the dancing and the whole Egyptian theme. I just didn't dance. I've never really danced in public - too shy. Well, I did when I was younger and less self conscious. But I remember my little niece dancing to that video very clearly.
I'm not sure how I felt about that kiss. I can't remember. I guess I really can't remember the time!!! Haha!

I was in junior high and I remember specifically thinking...when is MJ going to come out with another album? That same week is when I saw the video premier for Black or White...it was awesome. All the news channels were talking about it for weeks, specifically about the ending! I bought the album right away and me and my younger brother would listen to it after school every day. I would bring my cd player into his bedroom and we would just lie on his bedroom floor and listen to the whole thing. Fun times! Then, I remember watching the Jam video for the first time, I believe it was aired during the summer olympics. I also remember watching his Dangerous tour that was aired on VH1, over and over and over again! There would always be MJ weekends on VH1 and MTV around that time. They would play his videos all weekend long, it was great. I also remember staying up late to watch the Oprah interview and The Jacksons, An American Dream with my mother. Everyone at school would be talking about it the next day. Great memories!

Because Mike was kinda reclusive between albums (and there wasn't really much internet then like there is not to track celebrities every move) when the Bad album came out it was kinda a shock for ppl to see the change in his skin and face. He hadn't said anything about vitiligo at the time, so the rumors were flying that he was lightening his skin because he didn't wanna be Black, didn't wanna look like his father, wanted to look like Diana Ross etc. It was all in the papers and on tv. My memory at that time (I was 10) was pulling out the Thriller record and my Bad tape, putting them side by side and trying ot figure out why he looked so different. I think I stared at those two covers for 10 minutes... I couldn't figure it out.. but this 10 year old just let it go and that was that.
When Dangerous came out, again since he hadn't really been seen in public that much, when he DID appear in the BoW video the rumors started flying again because he was even lighter that he was before. I think though alot of ppl kinda came to their own conclusions and thought "Oh well, that's just Michael" because no one else was getting lighter like that. At least no one in our world, you know? There weren't any stories about other ppl with vitiligo or anything like that in the papers. And if I'm not mistaken he hadn't even done the Oprah interview yet so no one knew what he was doing to his skin. I guess it was just a genera consensus, at least w/ the ppl I remember talking to about it, and the things I was seeing on tv and in the papers at that time, that he was just getting lighter, probably doing something to his skin obviously and everyone had speculation on the reasons why.
As for the BoW premiere, I remember every one was waiting for the video that night. It was the first time a video would be on like four different stations at the same time, so it was a pretty big deal. We were all talking about it in school the next day, especially the panther dance. I remember watching all that crotch grabbing and yelling and window smashing and shirt ripping with my parents in the living room. I was 14. So that was fun. :D
I remember the apology in the paper the next day... and they never showed that part of the video again after that. Thank goodness for youtube. :cheeky:

Why didn't they put the racist terms on the windows and stuff in the first place?!

Alot of people didn't get the message honestly. I can't say if it did or didn't have anything to do with HIM specifically, but I can tell you for a 14 year old I didn't know WHAT was going on. I just saw a whole lotta touching and grabbing. It wasn't like it is today where you can go to youtube or whatever and go back and see things that you didnt' see the first time you watched something. I didn't see KKK messages written on car windows and things like that.
It's like because your eyes are glued to HIM that you aren't looking around the screen for "messages" you know? So when all you're seeing his him touching himself and dancing and smashing windows, then that's ALL you see, you're not looking for anything else. Now maybe if they hadn't stopped playing that part of the video after there was such a public outcry and apology, ppl might have been able to watch a second or third time and see these messages that we missed the first time we watched.

LOL! Well yeah there was that too! It was a bit raunchy, yes. I mean he took a chance on something and it didn't go over the way he anticipated. It happens when you're an artist and people don't really understand your work or what you're trying to do. Also the fact that it was aired in primetime on four different networks and kids were watching.. it was kinda a big deal at that time. And of course people wanted to pick at him for something... I think they were justified to a certain extent, BUT of course since it was him it got extra scrutiny. But I still think if folks had a chance to see the video again they might have thought differently.

Well, as far as I am concerned IN THIS INSTANCE there was a reason.
Usually (about 99.9%of the time) I agree with the senseless, cruel, heartless, disgusting way the media treated Michael throughout his life, and again, I am not saying that even in THIS instance they were fair, because they weren't, but I won't say that there was NO REASON for people to be upset at the second part of the BoW video. I contend that it was a creative decision that didn't work well for him, because ppl didn't understand what he was trying to do, and he suffered a minor setback and created some controversy because of it. It wasn't for no reason.

Thank you Jane and Sirena

AND the media had a FIT when Madonna did her thing! Remember that book she had out? The Like a Prayer video? Her risky stage costumes with the cone bras? That docu she had out? I'm sure there is more but I can't think of it off the top of my head. Didn't she simulate sex on stage during her tours or something? I can't remember. Anyway the media was in a uproar about all of that. The difference between her and Mike was that she LOVED that publicity, she WANTED it. She wanted her name in the media and wanted to push buttons. So she kept getting riskier and riskier. She wasn't anywhere upset about how ppl didn't understand her art and what she was trying to do. She was somewhere trying to come up with something to top her last stunt.

When Dangerous was released...
What was it like at school, college, work or wherever you were at the time?
Was it highly anticipated? Was everyone talking about it all the time?
Stuff like that...
I wouldn't know because I was -2 years old. <_<
Ahhh, fun times! I was in eighth grade @ the time, and Black or White was huge! It premiered on BET/MTV/Vh1/Fox simultaneously, I believe after the Simpsons which was also wildly popular at the time, so the release of the video was a major event. Lots of press for:
* the then-groundbreaking 'morphing' scene at the end of the video
* the controversial 'panther ending'
* Tabloids had a field day w/ title of 'black or white' and MJ's appearance
It was all everyone talked about @ school and made every news station. Same w/ the Oprah interview and the superbowl performance. Whatever Michael did, it shattered ratings records and created a buzz everywhere.
Final footnote I remember is the media and kids at school gloating that Nirvana's Nevermind knocked Dangerous off number one, 'hooray for the end of Michael's reign and the end of 80s pop, he's out of style, what a flop dangerous turned out to be, only five weeks at number one, Nirvana's awesome for beating Michael Jackson!' kind of thing. Really annoying. . . . Same thing happened w/ Bad, a huge album that people liked to call a 'flop' because it didn't match Thriller. What kind of 'flop' though has five number one singles? lol. Their ignorance is laughable!

Yeah, I remember watching the premiere w/ my parents, and they loved the song/video, but were really annoyed/perplexed by the 'panther ending,' lol. They just didn't 'get' why he would touch himself/yell/destroy the car (aahhh, parents!), and that it basically didn't make sense to end such a nice message w/ such a scene. By no means are my parents 'haters' (they are actually fans and have always listened to my CDs), but they just didn't like the end. As for Madonna and Prince, though big, yeah, they weren't as big as Michael to the point where their videos aired in prime-time and became a global event. My parents (and I'm guessing other people in the same age bracket) aren't likely to tune into BET or MTV and watch videos, so to see the crotch-grabbing must have been like WOW and "what in the world!" to a generation of people who grew up w/ Ed Sullivan censoring Elvis' hips and trying to censor Jim Morrison from saying "take me higher."

Well I was Nine years old I’m so proud to say I had the early to late 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s jamming to Michael music . Omg when the bad album drop I hated my brother he was a Stan he wouldn‘t let me play it so I sneak and played the album my favorite song on that album was “man in the mirror“ and dirty Diana. but when Dangerous drop I became more of a stan lol RTT was my joint and still is and “who is it” , in the closet but I was so young to understand that song at that time. My oldest sister tells me a lot about the victory tour cause she went to see him and his brothers out here in nyc. my sister always use to say you know Michael Jackson is my first love if I ever have a son I’m name him Michael she sure did name my nephew Michael so sweet . She love MJJ until the day he left us god bless his heart very well missed..thank u for this thread my heart warmed up again

I like the ending to Black or White..but I have to admit..to the average person watching it..it must be pretty bizarre, especially back then. I think it was such a huge contrast form the begining of the video where you have the beautiful message and michael with different dancers from around the world and the morphing..and then all of a sudden you get like 10 minutes of Michael touching himself, breaking glass and screaming...it is pretty bizarre if you ask me and quite unnecessary. It only detracted from the message he was trying to get across I think.. Because people were anticipating it..loved it..and before they even flip the channel they were hating on it..poor choice Mike.

ETA: While on the subject of controversy, I'll never forget the "What on earth is Michael Jackson wearing? Is it a swimsuit, is it a fill in the blank..etc" in 1992...
Ha ha that's my first memory of him, I was 9 and saw the Dangerous in Bucharest and I was hooked. My dad was making fun of him saying he was wearing his underwear on the outside LOL but I didn't care, I went home and started listening to everything MJ I could find, and I even found old Jacksons goodies on my dad's tapes from college.
I remember watching the BOW video and I was so proud of Mike for being allowed to get up on the Statue of Liberty  - I was 9 what did I know....
But I was mesmerized by him and I've been a fan ever since.

I don't know, maybe it's just me but that kiss doesn't look passionate enough. A little awkward. Maybe MJ had a tough time relaxing.
They so didn't kiss. I remember my friends and I talking about it (ugh u guys... memories!) u can see there was a space between their faces when Iman kneels. We wondered why they didn't kiss... or why they decided to use that take where you could clearly see the space... why didn't they do another take and do the kiss again?
We dug the video anyway cause it was HOT! And so NOT Mike's usual style, the Egyptian theme, the kiss that never was, the outfits, the dancing.. he was killing it! :cheeky:

I was watching this lil interview mike did during a countdown on his videos and he talked bout the ending. He said he was letting his fraustion out bout bigerty, racism and all that suff i guess in mikes eyes it was ok .

I remember watching the B&W video and thinking how cool it was that they got the people's faces to morph into each other. I watched the video not too long ago and was amazed at how good computer graphics and imaging was back in those days! The video is still so fresh and essentially timeless!
Really? When I think of MJ from the 90s...the first and foremost image is open white unbottoned shirt and black pants with hair flying everywhere..I guess the black or white outfit..but more the look from the superbowl. I feel like that outfit is a really defining one for MJ..even more than the beat it jacket or billie jean sparkly jacket in my opinion..
Mmm... good point... Yes, really, the black or white outfit is quite definying.
That man... he made so many milestones with his music, his moves, his outfits, all!!!!
THE KISS, here - but you have to watch the full video - near the end- about 3/4 into the way...
edit: 6:00 into the video...

Me, me!!! I said it before, the kiss was THE kiss!!!!!!!! I remember people being like --> http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb231/pcontrro/Shock.gif
I mean, EVERY single film was shocking. There was always something incredible on them: morphing, dances, kisses, big stars. And as someone said before, Michael wouldn't allow us to rest. Nop. One after the other. We would be still amazed by BoW and then he hit us with RTT. My favourite.
But then In the closet!!! And everybody wanted to be Naomi... he being so sweet and she being so... well... "special", what a mixture!!
Jam was also great. I remember these little rapper boys... Kriss Kross?? and of course, the "Big" rapper LOL!!
Great, great times of great music!!
And back then you didn't ask people if they liked Michael Jackson. It was a cultural thing. EVERYBODY LIKED MICHAEL JACKSON. Period. Haters were around, sure, but in terms of music, people had no single question, we all loved the King's music. It was a natural, expected, known fact. No questions about it. I was 6-7 yrs. old. I remember going to Wal-Mart with my mom and seeing this humongous "Dangerous" display full of cassette tapes (remember those? lol). It was the first album I bought with my own money.
The "Black or White" premiere was pretty big lol. It was gonna be shown on 3-4 channels simulaneously, so, being a simpsons fan, I chose to watch it on FOX, after the show. I flipped from FOX, to MTV, to VH1, to BET, and it was nothing but MJ. That alone blew me away. Back then, and even now, that's a really big deal. I don't remember all the fuss over the last few minutes of the "short", partly because I was really too young to care about that stuff , everyone I knew at the time (young and old) loved it, and lastly, I really didn't care lol.
The "Jam" video, however was really special for me, because I idolized both Jordan and Jackson, and I never thought that they would team up for a music video (outside of my dream world lol).

well, creating a controversy about something that trivial is a great success
and was most probably planned exactly like this. just like the teaser for the
HIStory album.
its art... art of expression and calculated art of promotion.
always funny how conservative consumers react to it while they are getting played. ;D

I was in my last year at primary school in 91. I remeber the big hype with the dangerous album at the time, which was huge. After the magical ride during the Bad era evertone was thinking, whats gonna come next with dangerous.
The Black n White video was the talk of my class I remember Everyone was saying whats Mj gonna do this time around and stuff. I got the dangerous cassette for my xmas that year. I would say back then the hype was massive for dangerous.

True..but I'm wondering if might have had a more positive effect with just the first part of the video. Because I mean, everyone loved it and I think he got his message across..but then after the ending..people forgot about the coolness of the video and just worried about Mike's "weirdness". I honestly think Mike would have preferred that his message get across as he intended it. Even John Landis said that what was shot was the actuall video..but then mike said keep the cameras rolling and he was just improvising and they kept it in..i mean i like the ending sequence, its fun, cool moves..but it seems a bit out of place you know? maybe couldve been part of another video or something..

The part that appears most awkward to me is when Michael puts his hand on her back. Can't put my finger on why. I just get that feeling.

Well I was a little black girl around 5. A lot of people were wondering if MJ could make another hit album, especially since the hip hop was big in the black community and starting to become more popular. People thought MJ couldn't rule another decade. I think that's why Jam was the first released song off the album. I remember Black or White was premiering and my family taped it on VHS. When "remember the time" came out it was another big event because MJ was doing more current dance moves and the video had a lot of cameos in it.

The problem is that there is the "instant star" mentality, too many people become too big too fast. They are fads, IMHO.
Also, many of the disposable acts don't have the self-respect to keep their private life private. In the age of Twitters, Facebooks, multiple endorsements - the artist overexposes themselves to death. There is no more mystery and intrigue anymore.
I love when a music artist disappears for a couple of years and comes back with a killer album. Look at Sade, look at Prince, look at Michael - they did it right. People will never stop buying their records, nor stop being interested in learning more about them.
What makes a legend is a combination of things: originality, talent, tenacity, dedicated to charity, a humble heart, a supreme love of their fans, the ability to inspire millions through their talent, the desire to always take it to the next level and not rest on their laurels, the discipline to grow and not let their ego be too big to learn new things, etc...
In other words, be like Mike.

What I remember most is the B & W video backlash - the night it aired I was 23 - and so super excited to be watching it live with everyone... I LOVED IT - and everyone was having a fit about the last dance/masterbation simulation.. give me a break
I tell you when he issued his apology later - I was stunned... I was like WTF - your an artists don't apologize for your art - there were tons of other artist just doing it for shock value... I didn't see Madonna or Prince apologize for any of their antics - but because it was MJ - I guess he felt he had to - but to this day I still wish he hadn't

I mostly remember the art layout for his cover of the album! It was the EYES!!!!! And so dramatic. I remember my friend being so excited she got tickets to see him. I wasn't a concert goer myself, too young to go! Then there was also the gold leothong thing. As a kid, I did think that was strange thing to wear!

Good point.... MJ had us always guessing and expecting, and we always wanted MORE since we knew he was able to always give us more. And he did it non stop back then. Yes, it is true, there were lots of rumors and questions about his looks, but when it came to music, no questions. Of course, that was also the time the haters started their "This is not a good album" song, like "Bad was his last good album", etc. but I honestly don't think so. They were doing "This is not a good album" line since Bad came out. You can look at old reviews at the time and you will see that Bad was panned by some people. They called it 'Thriller' 1.5. The only song that was universally liked off the album when it first came out was Man in the Mirror and even that got sly remarks because of Michael's changing features. They even dogged the music video Bad for being a remake of Thriller, but not as good and giving a negative image of black people.
Even funnier, Thriller was panned by critics for not being as good as Off the Wall. Some black critics went as far as calling it a sell out to the 'white media' because of songs like This Girl is Mines. They even slammed the rap by Vincent Price, which is a classic today. Billie Jean also got more than its fair share of people talking about it.
So, all of Michael's adult albums were called "This is not a good album" until the sell numbers came in. Just shows you how much of a short term memory people tend to have.

I think is more to do with the complex dancing in it. Although, Bad was more freestyle than Thriller.
The point being, they were all just talking heads. All of Michael's albums since Off the Wall were compared and criticized by the media. Thriller is only held as he last great album because it sold alot. If some of them read their old reviews about Thriller, I think they were deny ever writing those articles.

I think the most ironic thing about the whole thing is that Dangerous actually sold more worldwide than Bad. Also, Off the Wall which people claim to be Michael at his best sold as much as History, not including the double sells.
So, the general public do not agree with critics.

And also Remember the Time. I thought it was funny he was singing about phones when he was in Ancient Egypt.
I think i can answer why that was.
You see in the Remember The Time short film Mike was from the future. He just borrowed a time machine Delorean from Doc Brown and travled back to Egypt times

I believe I was about 7 years old. (without a care in the world! no responsibilities...except homework...life was good! lol)
I remember seeing my dad's cassette tape for the BAD album and I noticed his skin tone but little old me thought "Well, when people get older, they get darker and others get lighter...duh!" That made perfect sense to me. I thought he was the most beautiful man I've ever seen. Gosh. I would wear that Moonwalker video tape out! And yes, I thought every scene was real, especially when Mike turned into that huge robot going after Joe Pesci...I was so scared. From then on, I thought Michael was not from this planet, but in a cool way.
I'm kind of off topic but one memory that jumps out in my head is my first time seeing the video for Bad. I remember thinking "Oh no! Michael is not a nice person" LOL I truly thought he changed for the bad and he would walk down the street and knock over old grannies, I seriously thought that. Lol!!
Now as for the Dangerous album...wow. Back then, I was too poor to buy any of the albums and would choose a barbie over an album for Christmas (slapping myself now). My parents were going through a separation and the only thing that brought them together (at least for one moment) was the WORLD PREMIER of "Remember the Time" Ohh EMM GEE (OMG) There I was, tiny little Gina sitting in between both parents on their huge bed and we were mesmerized (I was thanking Mike in my head for bringing them together for that night). The video was totally like a movie for me, so much "ooooohs" and "awe" Then when Mike turned into sand...I believed that too!! That solidified it for me, MJ = Magic, pure magic. After the video was over, I'm sure I went and watched that Moonwalker video for a good couple hours.
There was no artist (that I knew of) back then where they had to have AMBULANCES on ready during a concert. It was such a common thing for people to faint during an MJ concert, lol! Unreal. Unreal.

I was only 9 yrs old but I do remember the excitement of rushing downstairs to the living room to sit and watch Black or White on Top of The Pops! We were all amazed by it, I remember afterwards writing a letter to Michael and then getting my friends together to clean up our parks and greens being motivated by heal the world. I remember at school the kids teasing us all for loving Michael and trying to dance like Michael in the playground. I too had the cassette and played it over and over - not really understanding In the Closet! I also remember crying and crying as my mum wouldn't let me go to Dangerous concert as a girl who was older and was supposed to take us had gone into trouble and my mum didin't trust her and that was the end of it! Wish I had been born just a bit earlier -I remember crying my heart out at 6 yrs old for not being allowed to go to the BAD concert!

I was only a year old. Sadly I did not get to witness much of his career first hand. But I do have great memories of watching Thriller and Bad on tv when I was like 7.
