Problem with Hard Drive I just bought

Hi, please help me,

I just bought a 320gig hard drive, when I plugged it my computer found it and said that a new material was detected.. but when I check in my computer base, it's not there so I can't 'format' it..

I have winXP..

What do I have to do?????
