I don't think I like the hologram idea. I feel uncomfortable about it for some reason.

The show: Michael Jackson: THE IMMORTAL World Tour
First impressions: This Cirque du Soleil stadium tour is big and has to be to live up to the memory of Michael Jackson, his music and his iconic and often weird celebrity.
What works? The music, of course. Unlike other Cirque shows which use a odd melange of incidental music with nonsense syllables, this one depends on music and lyrics the audience already loves.
So that's good? Yes, as long as the trademark Cirque clowns, trapeze acts and flawless gymnastics make sense with the beat. And mostly it works. It's a tough challenge, but as the night progresses the audience and the fluidity of the performances heat up.
What's memorable? Don't try to make sense of it. At first Cirque tries for a linear story line with a mime dressed in a silver glam outfit as he wakes up in front of the gates of Neverland, Jackson's California ranch. For those who remember the strange reports about that place (kids sleeping over, a chimp and llamas) it's a little creepy. But we soon get beyond childhood into a killer number with a beat, "Wanna Be Starting Something" and the show kicks into a higher gear.
There's a lot to like here: "Dancing Machine" has some high tech welders flying around on cables, "This Place Hotel" sports aerialists doing a high off-the-ground tango, and "Dangerous" has the sexiest pole dancer ever.
A beautifully choreographed scene of winged bats swirling around during "Threatened" and a magnificent aeriel duet of a couple defying gravity to "I Just Can’t Stop Loving You" show great blends of Jackson music and Cirque sensibility.
The Cirque sense of humor is shown as an dancer manipulates a human size sparkly glove and two others jump out of giant black shoes with shiny white socks.
The Ninja dancers in "Scream" are so effortless and in sync that it looks like one brain controls them.
The show cranks up to a beat-driven end with a mix of "Can You Feel It/Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough/Billie Jean/Black or White" as dancers in mixing colors of neon on black clothing stomp out Jackson's trademark moves.
The evening ends with "Man In The Mirror" as the large cast comes out, act by act, for a final bow.
What doesn't work?: Jackson's message for world peace and harmony with nature was often drowned out by his bizarre behavior. Here there are some videos of destruction of the rain forest and sad looking kids. Heart tugging, but not as effective as the pop songs.
Also the sound is sometimes muddy and near the end of the first act the volume was turned up way too high and stayed that way the rest of the night. You may need ear plugs.
Who willl like it? Jackson fans who remember his terrific music and gorgeous dance moves.
Who won't: Anyone thinking they will see a Jackson concert. You do, but there's a giant hole in the middle of that notion.
Twitter review: Cirque du Soleil mostly succeeds in reminding us of Jackson's musical legacy.
Thoughts on leaving the parking lot: Loved the spectacle, the showmanship and the effort of Cirque du Soleil.
Running time: 2 hours with a 20 minute intermission.
The basics: The show repeats Thursday, 8 p.m., at the Xl Center in Hartford. Tickets are $50 to $175. Information: 860-727-8010 and www.xlcenter.com.

I still wanna see this show! I'm just too broke to afford tickets right now. :pth: (I did enter a contest to win free tickets for NYC, I didn't win lol) I get my paycheck from my new much better-paying job in the first week of June. I might buy tickets for "Hershey, PA US -- Wednesday, July 11, 2012 8:00 PM". If sold out then, hopefully they add more dates for New York, Pennsylvania, or even New Jersey this year or heck even next year.

If you head to Worcester, Mass., tonight to watch the "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour," expect to see athletes perform.
What?
They are everywhere. Athletes show some acrobatics through "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" and then others do free-running parkour to "Thriller" and hip-hop dancers deftly dribble basketballs to the choreography of "Jam."
The theatrics of the two-hour show are produced by Cirque du Soleil, which uses Jackson's music along with Cirque du Soleil's signature acrobatic performance style to create a realistic concert experience.
The show, which started touring last fall, was produced in partnership with Jackson's estate. It's on the East Coast now and shortly will head to Europe. It's made more than $50 million already and has played in front of more than 500,000 fans.
"This show is really special and we love bringing it to the mainstream audience," said dancer Felix Cane, who performs the show-stopping pole-dancing act to "Dangerous." "I've always loved Michael Jackson and this is a great opportunity to show my sport to the world."
Cane was performing in Cirque's "Zumanity" show in Las Vegas the past two years and wanted a change. So she signed up for the "Immortal" tour and left her husband back home.

"This is an opportunity of a lifetime and I had to take it," Cane said. "I get to travel the world and show that my act is more about being sensual and not sexual."
Harvey Donnelly had been performing as a trampoline artist for 10 years growing up in England. He applied to join the Cirque troop and was hired one month later. He had to learn parkour and other acrobatics and feels blessed to be part of this show.
"I knew this was going to be biggest show in the world," Donnelly said. "I'm just so lucky. I want to do this for the next 10 years. Even when I'm on vacation, I listen to the Michael Jackson CD."
Donnelly had won trampoline's South West Championships in the United Kingdom from ages 11 to 15. When he was 13, he qualified for nationals. And now at 21, he's traveling the world and can't wait to return to Europe this fall.
"I knew everything was going to change in my life the day I got the news I was joining Cirque," Donnelly said. "Life is making the most of your opportunities. This is my college."

Bad news guys....
We learned this weekend that 2 magical numbers of the show will be cut before going to Europe.
Our dear friend Philipp and his ring team, all from Switzerland, will not be able to show you all their talent as their number CAN YOU FEEL IT has been cut from the show, along with the incredibly dynamic number Wanna be Starting Something, at the beginning of the show.
I, and we are deeply saddened to know that, to realize that our friend will not be able to show his number to his friends and family in his own country, and that everybody who'll see the show in Europe and after that will have a way shorter show, since it already got shorter from October 2011 to now, and will be cut again before going to Europe.
So, concerning the ring team, their last show will be on September 2nd in Mexico, so if anybody here is going to that show, please scream as loud as you've never screamed before when they'll be doing their act for the last time.
Putting my sadness on the side, I want to thank the ring team and all the other artists who'll have to go because of the cuts for the magic they bring to the show, their talent, strenght and hard work, but most of all, I want to thank Philipp for being so generous with us, always ready to spend a little time with us, a real gentleman, charming, sweet and with a huge heart! Thank you sweetie :) May you and the rest of your team find another thrilling experience and a way to show the world your talent, for this is not over!

But I loved the CAN YOU FEEL IT number!! It fit perfectly with the theme I felt they were trying to create. I love this song. Are they replacing it with something else or just shortening the show?
The sax player and trumpet player came out at the start of CAN YOU FEEL IT and got us all up and dancing. I loved it!
I am sad with you...
Edit: sorry! I just saw that you said they are shortening the show. I was hoping they might use TWYMMF instead.

Thanks for your support for the Can You Feel It number, it was a favorite of mine too.. You're right they will only make the show shorter, not replacing the cut acts by something else... so for people who will be seeing the show in Europe, I'm telling you not to arrive late, or you'll just miss everything...
I would have loved it if they included TWYMMF somewhere to replace, it's my fav song.. but ..oh well... :(

But why? WBSS is one of the most popular songs of MJ.
As for WBSS, I don't quite know why.. For CAN YOU FEEL IT, it's about weight they have to cut since many arenas in Europe can't support the material needed for the rings act...AND probably for money reason, even if I don't get this one much since they make 1 M$ per show... but well... WBSS is maybe for money reasons too because there isn't huge materials for this one, only dancers dancing and jumping around in colorful costumes and climbing on what's left of the late Giving Tree.. I loved the way this number kicked the start of the show in a very energic way! Too bad it's cut... It was epic! But they also have to cut 2 trucks of stock for Europe... so they maybe decided to forget about WBSS...
As much as I support and love the show... This is going nowhere good if they keep cutting the magical parts like that. First the Giving Tree gone (branches), they they cut Gone too Soon, most of Ben (what was on the main stage), they cut the tree with the roots in earth Song, which was absolutely brilliant and emotionnal... now it's just meh... now they cut Can You Feel It and WBSS....And with the rings act gone, that also means Dancing Machine number will loose it's WOW factor cause the ring team were in this one too :/

They can't be serious!!!
I know they owe us nothing, but can't we "complain" to the estate in a way?!
I always feared the will cut back the show, so people want to see the "real thing" in Las Vegas. It's supposed to be a separate show but I'm sure many elements of the touring show will end up in the Mandalay Bay version.
I guess they will soon have to do a new trailer for the show because nothing shown in the trailer will be in the actual show...

The first 15 seconds, those numbers will still be there and unchanged.
From 0:15 to 0:21, the Can you feel it number with the ring team will completely be removed from the show (but not the little Scream number we see in between)
From 0:21 to 0:24, will remain the same
From 0:24 to 0:27, it's WBSS number, which will also be completely removed for Europe
From 0:27 to 0:36, it should remain the same since THAT part of Dancing Machine doesn't change.
From 0:37 to 0:39, no changes except for the Twins who got fired.
From 0:39 to 0:43, THIS is the part of Dancing Machine that will be cut (you see the flying ring team behind the mime)
From 0:44 to 0:58, no changes there
At 0:59: This the Earth Song part with the mime stuck in the roots that has already been cut.
From 1:00 to 1:09, no changes
From 1:09 to 1:15, Thriller number won't ''change'' except that in the teaser you have the Giving Tree, which doesn't exist anymore.
From 1:16 to 1:40: no changes
From 1:41 til the end: you see WBSS and Can You Feel It, both will be cut for Europe, and a little of ring act in Dancing Machine, gonna be cut too, besides that, the pole dancer will still be there and besides the Giving Tree again, the rest will also stay.

How do we know WBSS will be cut? Just becuase they cant use the ring dancers becuase of safety concerns doesnt mean they are cutting the song. maybe they will incorporate the song into the show another way . Is there a source (link please) that says WBSS will be cut from the show?

I answered that question in the other post. There is no ring in WBSS, only in Can You Feel It and Dancing Machine, so it's not connected to them about WBSS. As I said, my source is the artist of the show we had a face to face discussion with. Later that night, Jonathan 'Sugarfoot' came to us too and asked us ''So, did you hear the news?''

Before we get ahead of ourselves with rumours & hear-says, can we wait until we get a formal announcement?
We should learn from our latest BAD DVD debacle to wait and see.

lol, Of course you can wait for an official announcement if you want, it's your right, I could have kept that for myself too you know ;) For curious people, you can always search the net or Facebook pages of some of the artists of the Immortal, some of them actually commented on that matter on their page. I think this is as official as it will get. (the artists talked about the cuts).
They will hardly announce it in an official statement "by the way, we cut a few songs so the show will be even shorter..."

That is also my opinion. I doubt there will be an announcement about it, it will be just a ''well, wait and see''
But..

I thought the show was much better this time. I did noticed some changes, but in my opinion, they were good changes (videos shown in the big screens, stage set-up). The show started at 8:05 pm. and ended at 10:14 pm. Elusive (and others living outside of London) ...is it possible they are not announcing dates for other UK cities because other arenas aren't suitable for a Cirque show? I remember a few months ago, someone wrote that when Immortal moves to Europe, some acts will be cut, because Arenas in Europe are not built for these kind of shows. (or something along those lines).
Have Cirque OTHER shows (Alegria, Saltimbanco etc) visited your respective cities in the past?

I know people who have been to the allegria cirque show at manchester's MEN arena this year. It's got a slightly larger capacity than o2. So that's not the reason. Guess it's economics, if they can sell out 02 for multi-nights, why travel around. The distances within the uk must seem dinky compared to usa.

It's not only about the capacity, it's also about the way it's built, the weight the roof can take, and the show is not only going to UK, there are many more arenas in Europe the show is going to, so they get rid of the material (and some acts) for the whole Europe Tour, so they don't have to pay (yes of course, it's also about money) to move those structures across the ocean. It wouldn't be logical to keep the artists for all the Europe tour for only some places they will be able to do their number, and for them to ask every city which version of the show they'll do tonight. The other Cirque shows don't have the same numbers nor installation, so it cannot be compared. Still, it sucks, but they do what they have to do I guess..

yeah numerous cirque shows have performed in many uk cities as part of a uk tour. the 02 is no different to many other arenas in the uk. bigger than some but there are arenas just as big or bigger than the 02 in the rest of the uk. maybe they are looking to save money by not moving to other cities as the uk is small interms of travel distances and want the attention of the shows all being at the 02 as they have no problem doing multiple shows in diff cities in other european countries at least i arent left with the dilema of whether to go or not which i would be if it were held outside of london. its old hat for me now anyway and id be disapointed seeing the show in its new sliced and diced format. ironic that i get an email advertising the show as i write this.

Michael Jackson’s iconic moves are his legacy in Cirque’s ‘Immortal World Tour’
By Sarah Kaufman, Friday, July 6, 5:25 PM
We always knew Michael Jackson’s life was a circus — eccentricity swirled around him like the paparazzi.
But he wasn’t the only pop star defined by oddness. The sex scandals, pet chimps and radical changes to his looks weren’t entirely out of keeping in an industry that has embraced Jerry Lee Lewis, Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga.
But inspiring a true under-the-big-top spectacle? Now that’s something only Jackson could do.
Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour” rolls into Verizon Center on Friday, claiming to capture the “essence, soul and inspiration” of the late King of Pop. In interviews posted on the show’s Web site, its creators state that Jackson’s music and vocals drive the production.
They’re wrong. Granted, the music is important — more than 30 of Jackson’s songs, including such hits as “Wanna Be Starting Something,” “Dangerous,” “Beat It, “ “Smooth Criminal” and “Man in the Mirror,” will be heard throughout the show, in mash-ups, remixes and live performances of new arrangements. The show’s musical director, Greg Phillinganes, traces his Jackson expertise back to session work on several of the singer’s albums and to his “Bad” and “Dangerous” concert tours, for which Phillinganes was also musical director.
But without Jackson’s legacy as a dance icon, there would be no Cirque circus. There would be, instead, the Jackson version of “Beatlemania.” “MJmania,” perhaps.
Think about it: If he weren’t such a physical performer, known for his introspective solos as well as full-out dance numbers in which his footwork outshone the career dancers fanned out behind him, what would Cirque’s dancers, contortionists and acrobats have been able to sink their famous bodies into? Jackson was a profoundly talented kinetic artist as well as a musician. He was unique in the pop-music world, an entertainer whose physical expression came at us just as powerfully as his musical one.
To be sure, there are countless other pop stars who dance. Ne-Yo pays affectionate homage to Jackson with his white socks and crisp, jazz-inflected choreography (which Jackson, by the way, borrowed in large measure from Broadway great Bob Fosse).
With his velvet coordination, Usher brings up-to-the-minute dance trends like the Memphis jook onstage. But not he, Ne-Yo or enthusiastic singer-dancer Chris Brown has the personal flamboyance or global renown to spark a theatrical event like the Cirque du Soleil show, which has European dates booked through next spring.
And none of them has made dancing a cornerstone of his craft to the extent that Jackson did.
Jackson’s identification as a dancer went beyond the common practice of injecting choreographed sequences into live performances and music videos. Even if such appealing singer-dancers as Beyonce or Madonna were to depart this life well before their time, as Jackson did three years ago at age 50, I’m not sure that the desire to cash in** on their popularity would bloom into a dance-acrobatic-narrative extravaganza as this Cirque production promises to be.
“I don’t know who you could really put next to him,” ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov told me just after Jackson died in June 2009. “To imitate somebody like Michael Jackson is impossible. Why bother? You just relax and admire.” Barysh*nikov, who was introduced to Jackson by Elizabeth Taylor, recalled encounters marked by Jackson’s hungry curiosity about ballet and the process of working with choreographers. The pop king was a completely intuitive dancer; his questions about the studied art of it, Baryshnikov said, were like a child’s.
That natural ability is what most impressed the ballet dancer, who fondly remembered Jackson’s “superior confidence in his body as a dancer. You wanted to say, ‘Wow, this guy, what a cat; he can really move in his own way.’ ”
There was his world-famous moonwalk, which though Jackson didn’t invent it — it was a longtime tap-dance staple — the technique will be forever linked to the pop star. It’s hard to think of him without seeing him sliding backward across the stage, as if he’s slipping on ice, or being pulled by an invisible thread. (“Moonwalk,” though, is one of the world’s great misnomers, though it’s more romantic than calling the move Trying to Reverse Direction on a Conveyor Belt.)
Jackson’s dance prowess was in glorious evidence from the start. As the Jackson 5’s kid singer, he absorbed James Brown’s moves into his bones, especially the Godfather of Soul’s precise, twisting footwork and his tight spins that started with a sweep of one shoulder. Jackson’s joy in moving was an instinctive musical response, and as much a part of his appeal as his dimples and sweet soprano.
As his solo career grew, so did the power he could project through that lithe, boyish body. By the time he was singing in stadiums, the electricity in his dancing could be felt in the highest rows. Look at the jolts and shudders he delivered when he performed “Billie Jean,” for example. This wasn’t a vanity moment, an opportunity for a costume change and some mimed makeout with a backup dancer, as you see in so many other pop concerts. It was a demonstration of the barely contained fire in this performer, the volcanic self-expression that, whatever the oddities of his personal life, found a positive outlet in a perfected physical display.
This physical fire is what extends Jackson’s legacy in a way that Whitney Houston or Donna Summer, as mourned as they are, will never enjoy. The recognizable moves, the kinetic excitement and the visual spectacle of the Jackson concert experience can be resurrected and multiplied, with a cast of hundreds, even though the star is missing. Cirque du Soleil will do it with bloodied, mummy-wrapped characters inspired by the “Thriller” video, dancing in “re-imagined” choreography. There will also be a chorus of performers in red biker jackets like the one Jackson wore in “Beat It.” And hip-hop dancers take the stage in a riff on the video Jackson made with basketball great Michael Jordan.
There’s even a number that was designed for Jackson’s “This Is It” tour, the one he was working on before he died.
“This will be the show that Michael wasn’t able to do,” says Phillinganes in a promotional video clip. Perhaps. But in a larger sense, Jackson had done it all before. That’s why the show exists

Just saw this show yesterday in Hershey PA.
I must say that I was a bit skeptical when I first heard of this show however long ago and I actually had no intentions on going. I then managed to get my hands on some tickets at a very cheap fare (through an employer) so I figured I might as well give it a world and I'm glad that I did. I was not the least bit disappointed if anything I was impressed with what they were able to do and what they were able to create. There were moments of joy, of sadness, excitement, magic, you name it and they captured it all in one show. They truly captured the essence of an MJ show and that is what made it special to me.
The only thing that kind of bummed me out was the fact that if you listened to the Immortal Album...you've pretty much heard the show so it kind of takes away the shock value of what will and will not be played and what cues are coming up etc. Had I not heard the album, there would have been plenty of real surprises in store and that's what was kind of whack, I guess you could say. There weren't too many true surprises outside of what we have all already heard from the album. Perhaps it's a minor detail but I couldn't help but to watch the show and wonder how even more excited I would have been had I not heard the album before hand. Also, if you've seen any of the previews...that kind of took away the awe aspect at some points as well.
Regardless, the show was great and I would love to see it again. I went with my best friend and she isn't a big MJ fan but she too was in awe with the show aspect more so than anything. The MJ aspect was a second detail for her which is what is great about the show is fans and non fans of MJ alike can go to this and just enjoy an amazing show.
It was kind of funny that at the end everyone thought the show was over so people started to leave before Man in the Mirror and I too was almost out the door because we had to beat the traffic because my friend had to be up for work in 6 hours...but I stuck around and that was probably my fav part. Just seeing everyone dancing, young and old, and hearing stories during intermission, and seeing people dressed up...it made me happy in a sense and gave me some closure that Michael will never truly part. He will only live on and continue to become "immortal".
Just got back from the show in DC. It was great! It sucked that the giving tree wasn't in the show.
PS. I love me some Tina Guo.

The top-grossing act during the first six months of 2012 wasn’t a band or an artist with a mega-selling album. Instead it’s Cirque du Soleil – “Michael Jackson: The Immortal,” which played 95 shows in 46 cities and sold 703,793 tickets for a total gross of $78.5 million.

Jackie isn't involved in the Vegas show & Jacksons are planing their OWN vegas residency:
Jackson [Jackie] hopes to eventually bring the Unity show to Vegas on a full-time basis.
"After touring the world a couple of times, the plan is that we'll be playing on the Strip," he says. "We want find to a permanent home here."
Of course, there's the Michael Jackson-themed Cirque du Soleil show set to open at Mandalay Bay in December, which Jackson says he was not involved with, though he was consulted for Cirque's touring tribute to this brother, "The Immortal."
Until then, there's the Unity Tour, which Jackson knows will be greeted with some skepticism.
"A lot of people didn't know what they were going to get because Michael wasn't there, and I can understand that," Jackson says.
He then notes that the Jacksons are just trying to put on a good show, which he sees as the most honorable way of honoring his brother.
"We just do exactly what he would do."

I want one!! the one I have still has the twins. Do you know how I can get one?
I saw the show twice when it was here in Chicago and it was soooo great. But I was so sad when "can you feel it" was over knowing they are cutting it. It is so perfect for the whole theme they created. Wish they would listen to me!

Good to know this. We saw the show that night in DC, and I was a little disappointed because of the obvious technical gaffes. It did not seem up to Michael's standards. I wondered why - now I have an answer that makes me feel better! I have seen other Cirque shows, which were flawless, so I really couldn't understand it. I thought about trying to get a ticket for another night just to see if things were fixed, but ultimately didn't. I'll just wait for the Vegas permanent show and then hope I don't go on the same night as the First Lady again!

I don't know where you can get one, probably when it will be sold when the Europe leg of the tour begins you ca ask someone to get you one :)
For the Can You feel it number, it was hard for me too to watch it for the last time in Montreal 20 days ago, but still, I was smiling, watching my friend doing his thing on that stage for the last time.

Are they definitely removing Can You Feel It and WBSS? They are two of the biggest parts of the show. The beginning won't be as good without WBSS. How will the medley work? Will it just start with DSTYGE? I'm concerned because they are removing a pretty big act, one that is very Cirque like, and they have already come under some criticism for not having enough Cirque elements. Not to mention that Gone Too Soon has already been cut. It's going to be a very short show and I fear they will get a lot of criticism from fans and critics alike for these decisions, which are obviously cost cutting. The arenas they are playing in Europe are no smaller than the ones in the US after all. Fans who've seen clips on the internet are going to be dissapointed. I don't want to see a show that's only half of what it used to be. And just what is the real story with the Giving Tree? There was so much hype about how it was the centre piece of the show. It looked great and then suddenly after a couple of shows the top part gets cut. Literally. They must have had it planned out logistically before hand, not to mention the expense and time of putting it together and rehearsing with it, so I don't buy that it was a logistical issue. What happened? Was someone injured or something?
I'm not being critical of the show. I'm just a concerned ticket holder. I have tickets for three performances at the O2 including front row premium seats for one!

Stella I have a ticket for the O2 too. With all these changes I am so happy I saw it in Vegas. The story I heard about the giving tree was that 1st it was not completed, and then later I heard that it was taking too long to set up for each show. I also heard that they had to cancel shows because it was taking too long to set up certain sets from one show to the other. Who knows. It seems they are streamlining the show, so maybe the end results may not be too bad?
Maybe they will add more cirque elements to the parts they are keeping in the show. The other thing is that you can't please all the cirque lovers and you cannot please all the Michael fans either, so they have to figure out if this show will be more Michael oriented or cirque oriented or a complete blend between the two.
What I am going to do is go to the O2 with an open mind.

As far as I know yes the cuts are still being made. I agree with you, I really don't get why WBSS is being cut, it doesn't take much machines, it's only dancers, costumes, jumping around.. and it just starts the show, it makes it so dynamic... Anyway, I guess we can't be sure of anything now until they make the first shows in Europe.
As for the Giving Tree, I also heard couple of explanation, it's probably a mix of all those.. got broken, was supposed to get repaired for Toronto, was too difficult to travel, was too dangerous for dancers (they used to dances on the branches.. risky...)
Anyway, they are in Vancouver now, only 13 shows to go before the end of the North American tour, and end of the contract for 13 of the artists... Time will tell what comes for Europe..

Michael Jackson show continues to conquer the box office
‘The Immortal’ returns to Southern California, still dominating the touring world.
When Cirque du Soleil titled its new Michael Jackson show "The Immortal World Tour," the name wasn't just symbolic. Its second appearance in Southern California this year, Tuesday and Wednesday at the Staples Center, is only the beginning of a large, seemingly endless life for this glitzy tribute to the King of Pop.
The Quebec-based company has graduated from humble beginnings as an itinerant New Age-y tent circus into a worldwide live-entertainment juggernaut that can craft multi-media events of unparalleled size and sophistication.

Cirque pays special attention to Las Vegas and Southern California, two parts of the world that have been especially good for its bottom line over the last quarter-century.
Its valentine to Hollywood, the permanently running "Iris," revitalized an under-utilized and troubled Los Angeles albatross (the former Kodak Theatre, now the Dolby Theatre) thanks to an investment of more than $110 million and an aggressive marketing campaign.
Cirque's MJ show, which debuted in Montreal last October and opened at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in early December, will have a permanent home there. After the departure of "The Lion King" from the Mandalay Bay at the end of 2011, construction crews began a one-year makeover for a completely different version of "The Immortal" with a larger and more elaborate set. It is slated to open in May 2013.
Meanwhile, the incarnation of "The Immortal World Tour" that began in Vegas is living up to the screeching pre-opening hype. Cirque's investment in the show and its ambitious multi-year plans for it have proven good bets so far.
Soon after it opened in Vegas, the revenue numbers were eye-popping. Pollstar reported that "Immortal" was the highest-grossing live show in the country, with nearly $2 million in tickets sold for each night of its initial run through Dec. 27. According to Pollstar it was the top-earning touring act during the first six months of 2012, playing 95 times in 46 cities and selling 703,793 tickets for a total take of $78.5 million.
We talked to Travis Payne, one of 12 choreographers who worked on "The Immortal" with its director, Jamie King, about the phenomenon of the show, his long association with the late pop star, and how everything came together. Payne collaborated with Jackson for many years and was the principal choreographer for the singer's "This Is It" international tour, which was cut short by Jackson's 2009 death.
The Orange County Register: We saw "The Immortal" when it opened last December in Las Vegas. Has the show changed since then?
Travis Payne: That's the last time I saw it, too. I've been busy. I will see it again in L.A. With a show the size and scale of "Immortal," something is always being retailored. The biggest deal was in the (original show) we had this gigantic Giving Tree. It was the centerpiece of the show. That presented problems in some venues because of the weight, so we changed it.
The Register: It sounds like your attention is split right now.
Payne: We're gearing up for the second show that will live permanently in Las Vegas starting next year. That's huge. (The touring and Las Vegas productions) will be two totally different shows. Jamie King is directing (the permanent show) and I am choreographing with a team.
The Register: What was your biggest challenge when working on "The Immortal"?
Payne: My principal responsibility was to reproduce Michael's classic choreography with a new generation of performers. We're working with songs that everybody knows: "Thriller," "Dangerous," "Smooth Criminal." We wanted to audience to see those songs more or less as they remembered them. It was about paying homage to all this great work, and not to simply recreate it but re-imagine it while keeping all the signature moves and shapes intact.
The Register: What was it like working with kids who weren't around when these songs were new?
Payne: I tried to communicate as much of the back story behind the movement as possible, and the reasoning for certain things. Of course, there was a team of coaches as well as more than 60 actors and dancers and singers and musicians. It was a huge machine. The schedule had to be very clever for us to be able to have the dancers that we needed when we needed them, in the midst of their make-up sessions and physical fitness classes. It's like putting on a ballet, a musical and a rock concert all at once.
The Register: MJ's talents as a dancer and choreographer are often overlooked. What was the essence of his genius in that area?
Payne: I think he was able to create a movement language that was all his own. He would take his inspiration from different places, whether it was Baryshnikov doing a ballet or urban kids on the street doing hip-hop or even matadors in the bull ring. He admired Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse, Diana Ross. Over the years he remained a student of movement. He had different collaborators along the way. I was fortunate to be one of them starting in 1992. We would bounce moves and shapes back and forth. What I loved about his movement is that there were really no rules. And it was simple enough that his fans could do the moves, but innovative enough to catch your eye.
The Register: What did you learn from working with Michael?
Payne: He was a total perfectionist. Every experience was different, but we were always creating at the highest level. The energy was great. I knew it was a special time. He was great mentor, but he taught by example. I worked hard, but it never felt like work.

Cirque to open Mandalay Bay nightclub ahead of Michael Jackson show
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte is reportedly opening a nightclub in February at Mandalay Bay ahead of his new Michael Jackson residency show starting there in the spring. It confirms our previous Vegas DeLuxe story, but because there is no official announcement yet, it’s unclear if this will take the place of the long-vacant nightspot Rumjungle.
It would be Cirque’s first standalone nightclub, and Andrew Sasson’s Light Group will manage it as Guy’s partner. Cirque launched Revolution at the Mirage in tandem with the casino resort and its show there, “The Beatles’ Love.”
Guy promises that the Mandalay Bay space will be a unique nightclub: “It’s an opportunity to materialize what we have been doing for 20 years with Cirque’s special projects,” he said.
Guy is known for fantastic, over-the-top parties and premieres he throws at Montreal headquarters and at his summer playground home in Ibiza, where the extraordinary and wild Manumission parties first brought prominence to the Spanish island playground.
If the opening-night celebration of “Michael Jackson: the Immortal World Tour” in Montreal last October is any indication, I can tell you from attending it that Guy’s legendary parties will bring new meaning to Las Vegas being the Nightclub Party Capital of the World.
The new Mandalay Bay nightclub doesn’t have a name yet, but the design calls for it to welcome 2,000 party revelers nightly. It no longer appears that the nightclub first reported here at Vegas DeLuxe will be themed as a Michael Jackson party palace.
So far, Guy has revealed that the roof will be rigged with Cirque technical equipment to allow performers to move up and down from the ceiling and along walls so that “every person in the club gets roped into the show.” Call them integrated performances among guests, dancers and DJs. Apparently, partygoers will even be able to get costumes produced by Cirque to really join the circus.
Guy launched the U.S. tour of “Michael Jackson: the Immortal World Tour” at Mandalay Bay last December. It is currently wrapping up its U.S. run before moving to Europe this fall.
The new permanent Michael Jackson residency is set to open in mid-May. Pre-production is well underway, with director Jamie King moving to Montreal next month for first rehearsals. The cast will move to Las Vegas early next year for the load-in at the reconfigured “The Lion King” theater in Mandalay Bay.
“It will be completely different from the ‘Immortal’ show,” Jamie has told me. “This will be a theater show, not an arena tour production. It will have a completely different feel. Both shows must be different, and they will be. The theater is under construction, and it has much potential. I am excited for the future.”

Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour kicked off Oct. 2 in Canada to rave reviews.
http://www.latinospost.com/articles/5011/20121004/michael-jackson-immortal-world-tour-2012-show.htm
The show is a theatrical production by Circue du Soleil, which uses Jackson's "music and vision" to create a compelling show which drew stars such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jay-Z and Beyonce.
Described as a "riveting fusion of visuals, dance, music and fantasy," the tour takes place in a fantastical realm where audiences discover Jackson's "Giving Tree," according to the website.
Through the Tree, the secrets of Jackson's inner world are unlocked-his love of music and dance, fairy tale and magic and fragile beauty of nature.
The show came about when the Michael Jackson Company, LLC partnered with Cirque du Soleil in a $250 million contract with Sony, which allows music publishing until 2017.
The show first opened in October 2011, which resulted in 264 shows in North America and Europe. By December of that same year, it had sold more than $100 million in ticket sales, becoming the top touring act in America that year.
With a setlist that includes some of Jackson's biggest hits, including "Dirty Diana," "Man in the Mirror," "Beat It" and "Thriller," the two-hour show has grossed more than $400 million to date.
CNN spoke to the show's "music designer "Kevin Antunes when the show first opened. Antunes worked with show director Jamie King, responsible for Madonna's elaborate shows, to choose songs from Jackson's catalogue and create a "soundscape" for the live acrobats.
The article said Antunes "rebuilt" the songs to make Jackson's voice more dominant for the show.
"That's his vocal the way that it was, just genuinely beautiful," Antunes said. "A young Michael Jackson is still today schooling all the vocalists of our era."
The music is also featured on a CD Immortal, in stores now.
The show will hit American for two days in October before returning for an extended run in November.

^^ I don't think I get the fact that it's been written in 2012 but feels like it's copy/paste from a review in 2011... Talks about the tree, and about shows in America in October and later in November... ??? They are heading to London, not America...
Weird..

I am so jealous of you guys...Europeans. I cannot believe it's October already. Over a year since I first saw the premiere....**sigh**
i hope you all enjoy the moment...go with an open mind and for two hours, you will feel MJ is back with us. I can't wait to read all your reviews.
SUGGESTION: Maybe a moderator should consider closing this thread and open a new one for the European leg of the tour?

I would just like to say I saw the show in Ottawa (where I am from) in July and it was wonderful. For me, life changing. I had forgotten how much I loved his music, and the last three months have been a roller coaster ride of learning all about his music, his message, and what he was all about. It has all touched my life more then I can say!
Anyway, I would recommend it to anyone, especially fans. It is more dance-based then most Cirque shows for obvious reasons, which means the dancing is out of this world! It is all Micheal's vocals with the band singing backup, and they do a great job. There is a moment when the performance stops, and his quote "In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe" shows up on the screen... the entire stadium was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, it was such a special moment. I've never been in one lace with so many people with such silence. I couldn't stop my eyes from welling up.

I can't believe it has been a year since I first saw the show in Detroit (I saw it 4 more times!) It was wonderful and it does feel like we have Michael back. You won't want the show to end :(
I can't wait to hear about it and the changes they have made. I envy you guys. It will be so hard though I bet being in the O2 knowing Michael should have been there. But he will be there. With his MJ FAMILY that loves him soooo much...

But have fun, dance, laugh and cry. Let all out. The show really respects Michael. And when you see glimpses of him on the screen you might focus more on him than the dancers. I know that happened to me lol.

One question : how much did the tour earn so far
Wikipedia says and some other sources say that it earned : The Immortal World Tour has sold until July 2012 over 400 million dollars.

I mean is this really true ? o.O I thought the tour earned close to 200 million.

Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour by Cirque du Soleil Tops Hot Tours
November 01, 2012 | By Bob Allen, Nashville
http://billboard.biz/bbbiz/photos/stylus//2620439-Michael-Jackson-Immortal-World-Tour-Cirque.png
Cirque du Soleil's concert touring production, Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour ranks No. 1 on this week's Hot Tours ranking with box office totals reported from an multi-show run in London during October. The O2 Arena hosted the tour for eight nights (Oct. 12-14, 16-17, 19-21), selling out every show and amassing a combined attendance count of 78,777 for the run. The overall gross was Ł4.5 million ($7.2 million US$) for the Live Nation-promoted production.
Since launching its North American leg in Oct. 2011, the Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour has played to more than 1.5 million people with ticket sales revenue topping $163 million. The London run kicked off the tour's European leg with dates booked until Dec. 29. The 2013 schedule begins in Russia in January and continues through April.
During the past week, Latin American concert promoter OCESA reported box office gross and attendance counts for touring artists who have been on the road this fall in Mexico. Four of those artists land on this week's Hot Tours recap. Ranking fourth is Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz with $3 million in ticket sales at two venues. On Oct. 13, he played to a crowd of 47,144 at Mexico City baseball stadium, Foro Sol with a gross of 24.7 million pesos ($1.9 million). Two shows in Monterrey's 8,000-seat indoor amphitheater, Auditorio Banamex drew a total of 13,391 attendees on Oct. 19 and 20.
Alejandro Fernández takes the No. 8 slot among the top-grossing tours of the week with ticket sales totaling $2.2 million at two Mexican venues. On Sept. 7 and 8 he performed at Arena VFG, the Guadalajara arena named in honor of his father, legendary ranchera singer Vicente Fernández. Attendance at the arena totaled 19,078 for both performances. He also played two shows in Monterrey's Auditorio Banamex with 13,348 tickets sold for both nights, Oct. 5 and 6.
Rounding out the OCESA tours in the top 10 is Spanish rocker Enrique Bunbury who ranks No. 9 with $1.3 million in ticket sales from three concerts in Mexican venues during September. He performed in Guadalajara on Sept. 8 at Auditorio Telmex, at Auditorio Banamex in Monterrey on Sept. 22 and at Mexico City's Sports Palace on Sept. 28.
Following Bunbury at No. 10 is pop group Big Time Rush who also performed at the same venues in Mexico City and Monterrey on Sept. 25 and 26. An additional concert that occurred earlier in the month at i wireless Center in Moline, Ill. was also reported this week giving the Nickelodeon boy band a total gross of $1.3 million from all three shows.

I bought my tickets 9 months ago and tomorrow is the day I will attend the show. Time really flies. Im beyond excited and I bought tickets very close to the stage.
My friend, who enjoys his music but nothing more, went to the show this evening and something happened during the show because the text Ive recieved is so out of character of her. Ive never seen her proclaim her love for MJ like this. She has bombared my phone with texts like "I loved the show and you will love it... It was amazing... Dont be sad that he is no longer with us, be happy that you lived during his lifetime too because thats a blessing... His music is all about love and thats the greatest power of all... I can't stop thinking how it would have been if MJ popped out on stage... I got teary and a heavy heart... He is our time Messias... MJ is pure love... I want to hug him... He should have been there with the dancers... Something was missing and that was MJ... The crowd was amazing"
So if this is from my friend who simply just enjoys his music, than how will the show affect me? Im gonna be a mess!!!!
I´m going to see it tonight,I´m so excited.
I bought my ticket as soon as I could and now it´s only hours left.
4 of my workmates decided finally to go too but they don´t have places beside me.
It´s good then I can feel free to cry and scream as much as I want and I get company to travel there.

An update on the new permanent show plus news that the Immortal tour is being extended to the end of 2014:
CIRQUE PLOTS MICHAEL JACKSON SHOW POST-‘ZARKANA,’ ‘IMMORTAL’ SUCCESS
Reveling in the success of the Michael Jackson touring show “Immortal,” Cirque du Soleil President Daniel Lamarre has revealed details of the full-time-residency King of Pop production set to open at Mandalay Bay in May.
Daniel told me: “We are talking May 23 for the first-night of previews, with the grand gala opening June 21. The Montreal studio right now is moving and shaking with Michael Jackson rehearsals. It will be totally different from the touring show.
“The tour was a rock arena concert, but this will be highly theatrical. That’s the big difference, but there will still not be a Michael Jackson character in it.”
Cirque has still not decided on the show’s title, and the creative team is working on the visuals. Daniel explained: “For the moment, we want to keep all the lights focused on our new ‘Zarkana’ at CityCenter. Once it’s well established, which will take a couple of months, we’ll come back to you and start really talking about the new Michael Jackson show.
“However, I don’t want to confuse the two Michael shows. They are totally different. We have already learned from the touring show that people want to listen and see his complete hits. They don’t want a medley of songs; they want the full song.
“So it won’t be 23 songs in the theatrical version. We will probably have fewer, but we will play it full blast. None of the acts in the touring show will be used in the theatrical show. They will all be brand new -- nothing will have been seen before.
“There will be a lot of acrobatic acts, but they will be characters with the storytelling. It will be very different than anything else we have done.”
Daniel told me that costumes and makeup are being finalized in the next two weeks: “We are a collaboratory! We are right in the middle of it. We keep trying new things and new challenges. Everything is very much on target with the construction at the theater in Mandalay Bay.
“You will be surprised with the changes there. … It is part of our signature. We love to change theaters in order to present our content the best way. … We will move the cast and crew to Las Vegas in March.”
I asked Daniel if it would be a re-creation of Neverland the audience would walk through. “We like the Neverland signature. You will see something of Neverland, but I don’t want to take you in the wrong direction,” he explained. “There is some Neverland, but it is not about Neverland. We have our own story line compared to other Cirque shows.
“It is an amazing combination of director Jamie King, who worked on the touring show, and a young man, Welby Altidor, who is the creative director. He has been with Cirque a long time -- he has grown with Cirque. He is really bringing something different to the signature of the show. “
Daniel told me that once the production is together and installed in Las Vegas, Cirque founder Guy Laliberte will then be here to finish the production and give the green-light go.
Meantime, “Immortal” continues to break records and win awards. “We won the most creative arena show in North America award from Billboard on Thursday, the night before ‘Zarkana’ opened. We are sold out everywhere in Europe right now. We set new all-time-record attendance records in Denmark. It’s the same wherever the show goes in. Last week, we were in Sweden and phenomenal records.
“It’s so big we are extending the tour by at least another year. It means for now, we will run it until the end of 2014 for sure. It’s headed for South America and Asia. Then we’ll return it to America and Europe to a lot of repeat cities where we were very successful and could have had longer engagements.”
I talked with Daniel at Gold Lounge in Aria before the “Zarkana” premiere Friday night. He summed up: “This is a very exciting night. It also is very interesting for us because it is the first time in Las Vegas that we opened an existing show, but all the excitement of a brand new show is here.
“The sound is a huge change from New York. It is much bolder here. The one thing that we had underestimated is how well the music, the set, fits in the Aria theater. This is pure luck because it was not planned that way.
“When I walked in the theater with Guy 10 days ago, he was overwhelmed. That is rare because Guy is very, very severe about the content of our shows, but when he felt, heard and saw the ultra-sound and everything else, he was really, really pleased.”

IJCSLY was such a beautiful performance. I loved the the the way they portrayed the black and white swans that were at Neverland. The were so high up in the air only holding on to each other and a strap! Did they think it was too dangerous?

It is true. Multiple users in german fan forums confirmed it.
Maybe it's permanent, but maybe it's also the rigging that didn't allow to do this performance in these particular stadiums. Or the two particular dancers were injured/sick and couldn't perform it? OR they "save" it for the Las Vegas residency show from now on... maybe?
But that's just speculation on my part.

They may have considered having elments from Immortal in the past but now that the show is designed and they are into rehearsals, thwt is clearly no longer the case.

Not according to the most recent comments from Cirque president Daniel LaMarre in the piece at the top of this page:
"None of the acts in the touring show will be used in the theatrical show. They will all be brand new -- nothing will have been seen before."
They may have considered having elments from Immortal in the past but now that the show is designed and they are into rehearsals, thwt is clearly no longer the case.
You are probably right but it could also be possible that, at this point where the resident show is not that far away, they just say it will be completely new instead of mostly new because it sounds way better...

i was yesterday on the vienna show. it was, i think 99,9% sold out. but i would say sold out.
the people freaked out (me too :D). amazing atmosphere.
a very great tribute concert. amazing to see sugarfoot and gred again. after so many years.
if some fans here, with not seeing a real michael jackson concert... imaging this immortal concert + the real michael jackson double size stage, 100% more perfection & dancing and choreography = a michael jackson concert.
it was like a mini michael jackson concert. the feeling was like a michael jackson concert in some way.
if that is what they want to reach, then they did. really. :)

^^ We were at the same show then. ;D I agree, it was amazing. It was so great to see fans of so many different ages - from children to grandmas and grandpas - and they were just as enthusiastic as young people. I actually saw a woman, about 65 years old, in Michael fedora and all. An older man, about 60, sat in front of me with a younger woman who seemed to be his daughter and he was singing alound, clapping etc. just as his daughter. It's really fantastic to see that reaction to Michael from all kinds of people. I think the emotional highlight of the show was They Don't Care About Us and then until the end. But every song was great. One of the girls I was with said she almost lost it during I'll Be There... That was very emotional. We had two non-fans with us (husbands of two women I was with and who are fans) and they too liked it a praised the show.
I think the show is a success in Vienna as well, since they added one more to the originally planned two shows. It was a really great experience. No, it's not a Michael concert, but it's about the best we can have now that he is not here. And it's a really worthy tribute. I think Michael would be proud.

There were no photos allowed to be taken during the performance, but here is one from the break or right before it started:
http://i47.tinypic.com/befu6c.jpg
This is the "Michael Jackson tree" in Budapest, in front of the Kempinski Hotel where Michael stayed both times when he was in Hungary (1994 and 1996). I don't know how it started but it became his tree, decorated by people with his pics and flowers. Obviously when there is an anniversary (birthday or death anniversary) there are a lot more flowers. So we stopped at the tree on the way to Vienna and placed our flowers (the red roses).
http://i46.tinypic.com/jkyikw.jpg
We also went into the hotel and asked them to show us Michael's signature in their guest book which they kindly did:

Taipei, Jan. 27 (CNA) A theatrical production that combines the music of late singer Michael Jackson with the acrobatic moves of Cirque du Soleil will be staged in Taipei in June, offering fans a new sensory experience, the organizers said Sunday.
The 105-minute show, produced by the Canadian entertainment company Cirque du Soleil, uses more than 40 songs by the "King of Pop," as well as his visuals and dance moves, according to the United Daily News Group, which organized the event in Taipei.
"We hope audiences will be able to experience the charm of the legendary singer at the show," said Zoya Chou, a member of the organizing team.
Tara Young, artistic director of Cirque du Soleil, and dancer Mansour Abdessadok will arrive in Taiwan on Jan. 29 to promote the show, the news group said.
The production "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour," which was launched in 2011, will be held at Taipei Arena from June 28-30.
It was the highest grossing performance tour in the United States in 2011.

I'm going to the show next month in Amsterdam and I wonder what is the duration of the show? Ticket says it starts on 20:00 and the last strain home goes on 0:33. Now I don't think the show will last 4 hours but I never been to a show from cirque du soleil so what's average duration?
And a few weeks ago they also added an extra show here in The Netherlands too.. I ordered my tickets before christmas and most of it was already sold out.. well the ticket category I wanted.

I visited Belgium yesterday. I missed You Are Not Alone (was that because of the copyright issue overthere with the track???) And I also miss that "tree thing" which can be seen in the teaser. I also thought there was more cirque in stead of dancing on the floor. After all, I really enjoyed the show, but not worth to watch it another time for those € 80,00. As much as I loved it, it's not one of those shows where I'd say I would go there again..While I'm def a person who likes shows parks etc. I don't know if it was because of the stage that they didn't get to do lots of stunts, or it was like this at other shows too.

I saw the show in Amsterdam last night and came away rather disappointed unfortunately. Me and my friend (fellow MJ fan) had never seen a Cirque show before, but we both do like acrobatic shows. Most importantly, with a band consisting of Greg Phillinganes and Jonathan Moffett, and this show being marketed as a rock concert meets Cirque du Soleil act, we thought we would enjoy the music in any case.
I just was not impressed. Bar a few songs (Beat It, TDCAU, IJCSLY, WYBT, I'll Be There) the music never got a chance to shine, either because it was interrupted by yet another sound effect, or because it was remixed in a way I really did not enjoy. The acrobatics were not that special to me, nor was the dance choreography. Most of it just came across to me as rather chaotic - a lot of stuff going on, but none of it really being all that special. I did enjoy the songs that did not have so many people dancing around at once, like IJCSLY.
I read here that many people feel like the show captured MJ's 'spirit' but it really did not feel like that to me (apart from I'll Be There and Will You Be There). Overall, this really seemed like a Cirque du Soleil show with Michael Jackson music, rather than a Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil show. This was also reflected in the kind of people that attended. Most of the people around me were Cirque fans who also happened to enjoy Michael's music, or just people who thought it would be a fun night out. I know that that is a good sign for business, but I think these people could also have been attracted by a show that was focused more on Michael and his work, which might have made them more interested in MJ in the long term.
In any case, I do not mean to be negative and I certainly do not want to discourage anyone who is looking forward to going, but I do want to give my honest opinion. Most people here do seem to enjoy the show a lot, so perhaps it is just me.

^ agree. I can't recall who said that it may had to do with the stage so that may be a reason why they couldn't do alot of stunts. The most chaotic part was that one of Dancing Machine, they were everywhere and I didn't know where to look. Also, I had a small chat with a girl who works at Ziggo Dome, she told me she've seen CDS shows before and that if you get to sit at the side of the stage, or just far from it, they try to make it enjoyable for everyone. I didn't get to see alot of things, and the dancers also were mainly focusing on the front audience, to my disappointment.

Cirque Du Soleil pays tribute to Michael Jackson
ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News
The famous show of Cirque Du Soleil ‘Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour’ starts today at Istanbul’s Ülker Sports Arena. The show will continue for two days

The three-day visual extravaganza “Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour” by Cirque Du Soleil starts today in Istanbul’s Ülker Arena and will continue through March 16 and 17 with five shows.
The unique performances of Cirque du Soleil have attracted a wide audience in Turkey, Anatolia news agency reported Pozitif Live Vice General Manager Orçun Ejder as saying at a press conference for the event held March 13 at the Edition Hotel in Istanbul. Ejder cited this reason for bringing the group back to Turkey.
“The show brings Jackson’s perfectionist approach and Cirque du Soleil dancers’ entertainment,” Art Director Tara Young said, “We are proud of our show. If Jackson could see this show, he would be very proud as well.”
Young said there are 49 artists in the show from 17 different countries as well as more than 30 musicians that worked with Jackson for more than 5 years. “This makes our show authentic. There is only one Michael Jackson in the world and we are not trying to imitate him, we aim to keep his memory alive,” she added.
Noting that they meticulously auditioned artists, acrobats and singers from around the world, Young said they made very careful choices. “For Michael Jackson’s memory we have gathered the best dancers from the world.”
According to Young, the program underscores Jackson’s global messages of hope, love and peace. A fusion of visuals, dance, music and fantasy that immerses audiences in Jackson’s creative world, the show unfolds his artistry before the eyes of the audience. Aimed at lifelong fans as well as those experiencing Jackson’s creative genius for the first time, the show captures the essence, soul and inspiration of the king of pop, celebrating a legacy that continues to transcend generations.
“The Immortal World Tour” takes place in a realm where the audience discovers Jackson’s inspiration and the wellspring of his creativity. The secrets of Jackson’s inner world are unlocked through his love of music and dance. World-famous performance group Cirque du Soleil was created in 1984 by two former street performers, Guy Laliberte and Daniel Gauthier. Initially named Les Echassiers, they toured Quebec in 1980 as a performing troupe. Its theatrical, character-driven approach and the absence of performing animals helped define Cirque du Soleil as the contemporary circus that it remains today.
Each show is a synthesis of circus styles from around the world, with its own central theme and storyline. The company draws the audience into the performance through continuous live music, with performers rather than stagehands changing the props.
From circus shows to world stars
The Cirque du Soleil expanded rapidly through the 1990s and 2000s, going from one show to 19 shows in over 271 cities on every continent except Africa and Antarctica. The shows employ approximately 4,000 people from over 40 countries.
Cirque du Soleil’s creations have received numerous prizes and distinctions, including a Bambi Award in 1997, a Rose d’Or in 1989, the Drama Desk Awards in 1991 and 1998, three Gemini Awards,
four Primetime Emmy Awards, as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Previously, Cirque Du Soleil visited Turkey with their show “Alegria” and their longest-run program, “Saltimbanco.”

Saw the show last night in Birmingham, was pretty much as I expected, although it wasn't up to the standards of a Cirque Du Soleil show, it was more of a celebration of Michael's dance and music. The real highlight for me though was to see Jonathan Moffett, Greg Phillinganes, Jon Clark in action, gave me goosebumps when they performed Smooth Criminal and This Place Hotel, could just of imagined Michael up there on stage performing with them, was very emotional at times.

Went to the show last night, it was amazing. In the intermission my husband was in line with one of the singers waiting for the bathroom.
Loved how in the intermission some of the dancers came out and picking out people from the audience to teach them moves, they were even teaching an old man to moonwalk at one point.
Would deffinately go again if I get the chance.
AEG China announced today that the blockbuster show Michael Jackson
“THE IMMORTAL World Tour” will come to Shanghai and Hong Kong in August 2013.
The event’s promoter posted a short message on their micro blog, saying: “The globally acclaimed Michael Jackson “THE IMMORTAL World Tour” will land on China! The show is produced by Cirque du Soleil, and is a riveting fusion of 3D visuals, dance, music, and fantasy and will take you into the story of the greatest entertainer of the 20th century.”
AEG said that there will be five shows in Shanghai from August 15-18, and then the tour will land in Hong Kong to perform August 22-25. The promoter didn’t elaborate as to when tickets will go on sale, but rumors point to early May.
Coincidentally, AEG also promoted Jackson’s “This Is It” concert in London in 2009, but the singer died days before the show. AEG is now being sued by Jackson’s mother Katherine Jackson and his three children in a wrongful death civil suit, alleging that AEG negligently hired and managed Dr. Conrad Murray, who administered the dose of propofol that killed the singer.
Jackson’s “THE IMMORTAL World Tour” was written and directed by Jamie King, who has previously worked with Britney Spears, Madonna and Rihanna. The Tour just finished its European leg and will soon head to Asia, starting from Japan in May.
“THE IMMORTAL World Tour” has so far generated US$270 million box office worldwide and was the second highest grossing tour of 2012 in the U.S., just behind Madonna’s “MDNA Tour,” according to Pollstar.
The new Michael Jackson resident show “ONE,” also produced by Cirque du Soleil, will open in June 2013 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Official Chinese tour news:

The Estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil will bring Michael Jackson The IMMORTAL World Tour to Shanghai's iconic Mercedes-Benz Arena from August 15 to 18, it was announced today.
AEG Live Asia will host this electrifying, once-in-a-lifetime production. As a riveting fusion of visuals, dance, music, and fantasy, The IMMORTAL World Tour will immerse audiences in the story of one of the 20th century's defining artists.
Written and directed by long time Michael Jackson collaborator, Jamie King, this show contextualizes Michael's artistic legacy in the tradition of the legendary Cirque du Soleil. Created for the enjoyment of lifelong fans as well as those experiencing Michael's creative genius for the first time, the show captures the essence, soul and inspiration of the King of Pop, celebrating a talent that transcends generations.
During his storied career, Michael Jackson enjoyed a special relationship with the people of China. He was one of the first western music artists to be embraced by the Chinese mass public when the country was only first reopening to the world in the early 1980s; and Chinese fans continue to share their love for his genius with the millions of Michael Jackson fans across the world.
Although an icon in China, Michael never had an opportunity to perform live on the Chinese mainland during his lifetime. Now, thanks to the Estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil, the IMMORTAL World Tour will bring a legend back to the stage and gives thousands a chance to enjoy the music of this creative genius in Shanghai.
The IMMORTAL World Tour brings the audience through a fantastical world, where they discover Michael's inspiration and the wellspring of his creativity. Through a series of scenes, the secrets of Michael's inner world are unlocked, from his love of music and dance, fairy tales and magic, to the fragile beauty of nature.
The underpinnings of The IMMORTAL World Tour are Michael Jackson's powerful, inspirational music and lyrics -- the driving force behind the show -- brought to life with extraordinary power and breathless intensity. Through unforgettable performances Michael Jackson The IMMORTAL World Tour underscores Michael's global messages of love, peace and unity.
The production is woven together by more than 35 of Michael's songs including classics such as Beat It, Billie Jean, and Earth Song, alongside popular hits from the Jackson 5 era. The musical component of the show was fashioned by Musical Designer Kevin Antunes and Musical Director Greg Phillinganes, who worked with Michael for over 25 years.
Using mash-ups, remixes and new arrangements, The IMMORTAL World Tour brings a breathtaking array of material to the stage, incorporating elements from his many artistic periods. The result is a complete soundscape, assembled from hours of recordings and unreleased material. The audience will hear Michael's fingers click and his feet stamp, creating an engaging and intimate experience.
Michael's beautiful, rich voice dominates the mix, and soars over the playing of a live band. The stellar on-stage band includes Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett, who played drums for Michael for 30 years, as well as a host of musicians that enjoyed a close, personal relationship with the star.
"It starts with the music," says Director Jamie King. "Michael's voice is what drives the show. I have the opportunity to carry on Michael's legacy, to take all that energy – all that he was and was going to be – and build it into this production. Our goal is not to simply cover Michael, but to take his music to a whole new level. "
In paying tribute to Michael's legacy, Jamie King has also utilized dance choreography, video projections, and creative storylines that evoke his phenomenal music and peerless stagecraft. Video projections integrate footage of Michael's on-stage performances, making his presence an almost-palpable part of the show. The set and costumes are masterpieces of conceptual design, bringing together iconic styles and objects from Michael's life, immersing the audience completely in his remarkable story.
"Michael Jackson is an artist that left an indelible mark on the history of pop music," said Adam Wilkes, Senior Vice President of AEG Live Asia. "Just years after his passing, fans in Shanghai will have their best ever opportunity to experience the magic of seeing Michael on stage. This multi-media spectacular embodies the spirit of his music, and celebrates his legacy for his Chinese fans. No performance of this type has ever before been seen on a Shanghai stage, and no show will ever come as close to recreating the golden age of the undisputed King of Pop."
