I stumbled on it:
Awe and Wonder: Michael and Cirque
SEP 22 (http://dancingwiththeelephant.wordpress.com/2011/09/22/aweandwonder/)
Posted by Willa and Joie (http://dancingwiththeelephant.wordpress.com/author/moonwalkingelephants/)
Willa: Joie, I’m so curious to hear about your trip to Montreal to see the Cirque du Soleil rehearsals! So, first impressions – what did you think?
Joie: Well, my friend and MJFC Team mate, Jonathan texted me just as I was returning to my hotel room after the show, asking me that very same question and I believe my only response to him was OMG!!! Honestly, the only thing that could make this show better is if Michael himself were on the stage.
Willa: You know, that’s exactly what I’ve been wondering about most. From what I’ve read, The Immortal World Tour kind of sounds like a Michael Jackson concert without Michael Jackson. Did it feel that way to you?
Joie: Well, that’s kind of a tricky question and here’s why. This is the first time ever that the Cirque du Soleil has done a show using a live band. Their Elvis show didn’t have a live band; their Beatles show didn’t have a live band. It’s never been done before. And the way they’ve worked it is really kind of cool. Kevin Antunes, the musical director for the show, has been given exclusive access to all of Michael’s original master recordings, and he has taken those tracks and basically removed the music and elevated Michael’s vocals so that they are crisper than you have ever heard them before. So during the show, you’ve got Michael’s vocals on top of a live band and the result is amazing. And, of course the band includes Greg Phillinganes and Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett who both toured with Michael for many, many years so, the band itself is phenomenal. So, I guess, in that way it is sort of like a concert experience but, there is just so much going on here visually that it is definitely much more than a concert. It’s more like a journey through Michael’s life and career.
Willa: So it doesn’t feel like there’s a big empty hole on stage where he should be? It’s a satisfying experience in its own right?
Joie: Yes, definitely. And it’s a spectacle, you know? I was there with 14 other MJ fan community representatives and, after it was over we had half a dozen or more people – Cirque people, Estate people, even John Branca and Greg Phillinganes – all coming up to us as we’re still sitting there in the stands and they were all clamoring, very eager to know what our thoughts were. And we all had the same reaction. We had to just sit there for several seconds and try to absorb it all before we could even respond, and I imagine that will be the reaction of most everyone who sees it, fans and non-fans alike. They will leave the arenas with a sense of awe and wonder. You know, the Cirque du Soleil is sort of known for specializing in awe and wonder, and they have worked the same magic with this show.
Willa: So give us some details! What all did you see?
Joie: Oh boy, where to begin? Well, I don’t want to give away any spoilers. And I want to make it really clear that some of the numbers I watched may not even make it into the final production when the show opens in October because it is still a work in progress. But, of the rehearsal I saw, right from the opening number, which was “Childhood,” you will be amazed. It’s like they’re taking you inside the gates of Neverland and, as you know, Michael had the most beautiful bronze statues of children at play and they dotted the landscape of Neverland. Well, those statues play a really magical role in that number and it is incredible. And then there was this really sweet moment a little later on during “Ben” where Michael’s elephants come out and dance, and it was just such fun to watch. Really cute. And I thought of you, Willa, because I know how much you love that song!
Then there was this whole sort of gangster segment where they did “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Dangerous.” The segment began with this very scantily clad female cellist playing her heart out on this electric cello and she is fantastic! Then all of a sudden her maddening solo turned into the opening strains of “Heartbreak Hotel” and the band kicked in and the music started rocking. The whole segment ended with these five or six guys dancing around a pole dancer to “Dangerous” – which, by the way, we had to imagine because the female dancer had injured herself in earlier rehearsals. But even without her the number was incredible so, I would love to see it again with all of the elements in place.
There was also a segment that highlighted some of Michael’s scary songs with “Is It Scary,” “Monster” and “Thriller” and the whole thing was just a whole lot of fun visually with a dancing monster clawing its way out of the pages of a storybook and giant bats with glowing eyes dancing around the stage, and it culminated with a stage full of mummies doing the Thriller dance in a graveyard. Just really imaginative ideas that you know Michael would have really loved!
In another segment – actually my favorite part of the whole show – the band was doing “Another Part of Me” and the dancer was up there doing his thing and the music was really rocking and we’re all sitting there jamming, and suddenly the song changed to “Speechless.” And just when you start to get into the shift in direction, something amazing happens! And the song changes again to “Human Nature” and the arena is transformed into the night sky. Ireally want to give you more details about this part but, I just can’t because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but, please believe me when I tell you that it was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful and I was not the only one moved to tears. And later, when talking to the Cirque and Estate people who wanted to know what our favorite part of the show was, we all agreed that it had to be “Human Nature.”
You know, one of the things I love so much about Cirque du Soleil are the aerialists; they are really beautiful to watch. In the rehearsal I saw, they were showcased in “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” which Kevin Antunes mixed beautifully using both the English and the Spanish versions of the song. And the aerialists performed a very romantic, very sensual ballet high above our heads. It was just so pretty.
Willa: That does sound beautiful. So where are they in the production process? Did you see a fairly polished show with full costumes and music and everything, or is it more of a work in progress – kind of like what we saw in This Is It? It sounds like they are still making some decisions.
Joie: Well, it is still a work in progress, they definitely stressed that to us going in but, what we saw was about a 75-80% complete show with costumes and music from the beginning straight through, just like a dress rehearsal. And there were a few technical mishaps and glitches, as you would expect with a work in progress. They were still perfecting the ending segment so we didn’t get to see the last 30 minutes or so of the show and we were told that would include the songs “Billie Jean,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Dirty Diana” and “Can You Feel It.” But, as a whole, it was a very polished show.
Willa: You know, I’m not quite sure how to ask this, but what makes Michael Jackson so special to me and sets him apart from everyone else is his ideas and how he expresses those ideas, and his commitment to that message. He had a beautiful voice, and it sounds like the Cirque du Soliel show has captured that through the master recordings, and he was an incredible dancer, and it sounds like the show evokes that through the acrobats and aerialists and dance numbers. But what about his ideas? Do you know what I mean? Did it feel like Michael Jackson?
Joie: Oh, that is a very good question; I’m so glad you asked that! Willa, they have really worked very, very hard to capture Michael’s spirit and his heart and it shows. I posted a news item (http://www.mjfanclub.net/home/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4849:the-ultimate-tribute-to-michael&catid=85:latest-news&Itemid=82) about my experience on the MJFC website where I called this show the ultimate tribute to Michael and I truly feel that way and I’ll tell you why. You have to remember that this show is being guided by people who knew Michael. People who worked with him and loved him. During my two days in Montreal I saw Greg Phillinganes, Jonathan Moffett, Zaldy, and three Estate execs get very emotional when talking to me about their time with Michael and how important this show is to them. They are all so passionate about doing something that he would love and getting it right. For him. And from the opening segment all the way through to the ending, you can feel Michael’s presence; you can feel his spirit. And his message of L.O.V.E. is front and center. In fact, in another segment of the show, I think it was “Will You Be There,” suddenly these big red, glowing hearts appear from all over the arena and made their way onto the stage. It was really moving and it just reminded you that Michael’s message was love. It’s all he ever talked about and it was what he preached. And they haven’t forgotten that and it’s clear that they don’t want others to forget it either.
Willa: I’m so glad to hear that – that the people working on this show care so deeply, and are passionate about both his music and his ideas. You also wrote in the MJFC news article that they asked for feedback and actually incorporated some suggestions. Here’s what you wrote:“They listened to what we had to say and they took our feelings and suggestions into consideration. And it wasn’t just lip service. Changes were made to the show immediately based on our feedback.” Can you tell us more about that?
Joie: Well, it was really sort of surprising actually. At the end of the show when they were all clamoring around us wanting to know what we thought, I had been talking to Navi (http://www.kingofpop.co.uk/index.shtml), the representative from MJFC UK (http://www.kingofpop.info/) about a certain number and how he believed it could have been done better. So when they asked, he told them what he thought and suggested ways to make the number stronger. And they listened to him and began making the changes immediately. Then the next day we went on a tour of the Cirque du Soleil campus and met with the creative director of the show, among others. And again, in that meeting they wanted to know what we thought – what our favorite parts were and also what parts didn’t we like. What, if anything, did we have issues with. And so, we told them. We (the fan community representatives) were honest with them about our feelings and we all sort of agreed on one certain point in the show that we felt was a little questionable and could maybe be done a little differently. And again, they listened to our concerns and they took notes on what we had to say and began thinking of ways to change things a bit.
But, I just think it’s so telling that the people putting this show together are so willing to talk to the fans and I really believe that they are trying very hard to get it right. Not just for Michael but for the fans as well. I think they are really trying to please Michael’s fans with this one. I think it’s important to them. And I was told by one of the Estate people during the meeting that this was a first. The Cirque didn’t do this for the Elvis show or the Beatles show. They didn’t invite their fans to a rehearsal to get their input before the shows opened. And I think that says something about how important Michael’s legacy really is. About how important he was and still is, both as an artist and as a cultural figure.
Willa: Well, from everything you’ve said, it sounds like there’s a really dedicated group of people working behind the scenes and the show itself sounds incredible. I love your descriptions, Joie. Thanks for sharing those with us. And then next week we have Joe Vogel joining us to talk about his Earth Song book, which is about to be released in print. So lots of exciting things happening right now!

I'm loving reading all about the preparations and really excited about the launch, and it probably won't be coming to my continent for another year or two. Great to see how a real tribute to MJ is put together.

I am glad to make your day guys, it certainly made mine.
Believe me and I mean this, this show does him so much justice and what's more Michael loved Cirque and its clear now that Cirque loves Michael, therefore it is a match made in heaven, literally.
I call on all fans all members, please forget the past lets do this for Michael lets return all the hype and excitement he gave to us, we the fans will then be heard and in turn Michael's legacy will thrive and the wider world will respect him all over again.
This is the real Michael Jackson tribute.
Thank you Gaz and I completely agree. It's so great to see you and put a face to a name. :-)

It was a normal morning for me, working 9 to 5 it was a usual day when all of a sudden an email that was to take my breathe away hit my inbox titled a special invitation I was curious to its content of course you can imagine my inbox mail after mail and like anyone I always read my mail and ensure people get a responce yep one hell of a task but thats just me being me as a servant to the fans of Michael Jackson however this particular mail caught my eye moreso than most and here is why,
Upon opening I started reading the emotions were building and building I could not beleive what I was reading in fact I read and re read thinking no surely not surely this is a joke however it wasn't it was genuine those that sent it I know to be legit and would never play a prank like this so yes to my abolute amazement it said hey Gaz do you want to come to Montreal in Canada would you like so come and see a private performance of Cirque Du Soliel's ultimate tribute to Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour omg I was wooohhhaaaaa I was climbing the walls with excitement omg I said to myself this is for real I am going to watch not only the worlds most iconic artist's tribute just as importantly Cirque Du Soleil were the ones doing it now from the very day this was announced I was like OMG what a partnership two iconic legends coming together what better way of celebrating Michael than Cirque doing it hell Michael himself loved all they did even touring their campus,
http://media2.senatus.net/files/myerscms/senatus_37AJAJ.jpg
The day came nervous as hell my trip began with lots of flying 10 hours one way in fact to Canada via the US but was it worth it HELL YEAH IT WAS.
My Day Starts Here
Wezssw17bcc
So 3.30pm came and of we went I could not beleive we were that close only a ten minute walk around the corner to the Bell Centre hockey stadium yep a whole arena was reserved for the final rehearsals one in which we were invited at one point I had to pinch myself thinking see I told you so those in charge are wanting to do Michael and his legacy justice clearly they had every intention to involve us the fans of course you can't invite everyone so why not the leaders who represent communities in the wider world.
9aLCP_imvI8
Walking into the arena we were litteraly stunned for words infront of us was the stage and set of Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour by Cirqu Du Soleil and let me tell you it ozzed Michael you could litteraly feel the energy of him all around the arena the excitement was building and like any rehearsals there was fine tuning to be done we kept getting small glimpses of his images on the big screens only for them to dissapear yep like with all setting these things up there were customary blips in that there was an issue with the video software waited and waited but you know what this increased our excitement many of the shows legendary contributors made a point to come and talk to us one being the great Greg Phillinganes musical director and master in his own right having worked with Michael directly on many of his albums and tours to other legendary artists, the energy this man has for the show and Michael's legacy was awe inspiring second to approach us was The Talauega Brothers choreographers to the show who had much to say to us including one factor that stuck out was make sure you got some tissues then the energy was building and building we could not wait no more.
The Stage
http://media2.senatus.net/files/myerscms/senatus_Diy8XX.jpg
The set was dominated by a huge spiraling tree which had to be a replica of Michael's giving tree around the tree was a huge stage and to the upper rear was Cirq's first ever live band steps dropped down to the dance and main show area with a long singular dance and walk way coming way out to beyond the middle of the arena finnished with a huge round dance area,
SHOW TIME
http://0.tqn.com/d/dc/1/0/k/T/1/michael-jackson-tour-storyboard2.jpg
The rumbling started the lights went up, its show time.....
Facing us was Michael's Neverland gates appearing out of the smoke from the very end of the stage was a young man who started to dance to Remember The Time and dance he did Locking and popping spinning and sliding/gliding it was clear this man could dance.
He was then in slow motion being sucked back along the stage to a huge screen where Michael himself was dancing the emotions started to run as all the memories of seeing him live came flooding back from the outset you could see they were trying to capture the essence of Michael actually being there the energy he oozed to the crowds even though he wasnt it was still a must for all to see and hear Cirq had me hooked from that moment, it was clear I was not just watching a tribute but some thing that was dedicated to him his memory his incredible talents Cirq wanted to create it all and that they did with their own iconic ability to put on a show of shows Cirq lived up to everything they are good at.
http://media2.senatus.net/files/myerscms_cache/senatus_mafpRX_display.jpg
I do not want to go into to much detail so as to not spoil your very own experience but many a tune boomed across the arena Childhood was for me very emotional and brought back a lot of the emotions of Michael what he endured through his years then to lift it up again was Wanna Be Startin Somthin after which from the audience the stage was raided by five super fans this story in itself was amazing throughout the show as they kept appearing and as the story unfolded it was clear they were there to try and be with Michael in Neverland skipping to some favourable parts Dangerous and Smooth Criminal was OMG they for me managed to capture the dance Michael created and performed another incredible part was Human Nature acrobats all in black with lights all over spinning up and down in rings above the stage was hugley a favourite for me,
Moving onto the to the music I for one could not be more excited to tell you all of the sounds that boomed around for pretty much the whole of the show, the mash ups the mixes the classics and incredibly the live band they were faultless in creating a master peice from start to finnish it is one hell of a musical journey and hell yeah I have got to get my hands on it to play in our All Michael Friday Show lol.
Summary

If The Immortal World Tour comes to a city near you whether your a fan or not its a must, as one thing is for sure if you not a fan you soon will be.
I commend the Estate And Cirque, together they have brough not only two iconics in Michael Jackson and Cirque Du Soleil but a team of people who have throughout Michael's life have been there for him helped him in acheiving his success those from who have produced his music to choreographed his moves even styled his cloths, what is evident is those in charged have not left no stone unturned in their quest to honour Michael's legacy
You cant beat the main man himself but boy these guys have come a close second.
My last words and sentimients are exactly as I told to both Jeff Jampol Estate General Manager and John Branca Co Excecutor Of Michael Jackson's Estate - With this show you have done Michael Justice,
Yes finnaly A real Tribute To Michael Jackson
Thank you so very much for this Gaz. I am so very excited. They finally released more dates and Chicago has scheduled 2 dates. I have purchased tickets for both shows. As we see in the video it is recommended to see it twice, so I'm glad I followed my instincts and bought tickets for both nights. Funny thing is, I'm moving to California in February, so I will come back home to see the shows. I'm so excited. :clapping::clap:

I just want to know what about hologram and MJ's video in the show?any hologram concept?? I believe they're saving those for the permanent Vegas show at Mandalay Bay, which will begin after the touring show ends..most likely in 2013 or 2014... I read that it's basically going to be a completely different show altogether! :)

It would probably have been smarter to begin the tour in Europe and then let word grow over the atlantic becouse of MJs mega fanbase in countries like England, France and Germany. Now they are gonna play 15-20000 spectators arenas in random places like Hamilton, Boise, Eugene and Saskatoon. Not sure if its gonna work out.....
The show itself seems to be spectacular though!

The opening shows were sold out...within a week. But 2 weeks ago, after they first started rehearsals at the Bell Center, the setting was probably changed and they released new tickets. Both shows last November, they were all sold out...that's why they added 6 new shows in that city. Actually, most of the cities have multiple shows.
With the trial coming up, I fear there won't be much promotion so they will have to rely on word of mouth...until the end of October.
Two friends of mine who wanted to go to the premiere weren't' able to buy tickets last year...and just last week, after they released new tickets, they managed to get a couple, and now are planning to attend premiere night next week. And they are closer to the stage than I am....which makes sense because the stage is now further back...
ETA it's smart for them to start inNorth America:
1) Cirque du Soleil as a rule, always premiere their shows in Canada or the US.
2) North American market is unpredictable when it comes to MJ...The show will be a success overseers in 2 or even 5 years.... but we don't know how long North America's renewed interest in MJ will last. It's already eroding... from June 25th's peak.
Here is a screen capture of the sold out shows last November 4th... I think the stage was re-designed to free up more tickets because all the new tickets are closer to the stage.
Also, no promotion since last November when they first announced the tickets. I have only heard of billboards in Las Vegas.

^^There is strong demand in the US. They added new dates in NY and Long Island. Cirque du Soleil has their own fan base. So, the show appeals to non-fans as well.
In terms of promotion, there hasn't been any major promotion in my area, which makes sense, as the show won't come to NY until April 2012.

Yes I saw this too. The shows were sold out last year. It`s addtitional tickets now. They sold 200000 tickets in the fist 24h hours. No other cirque-show has such a demand of tickets. And there were many press-report about add from additional shows about the demand of tickets. No worry the show will be a big deal all over the world.

Do we presume that empty seats mean fewer people love Michael or more people love Michael less? *Sigh*
There is more to Michael and his legacy than numbers!
And I support the proof that Memefan has put forward.

Canada is the home base of Cirque du soleil. so it makes perfect sense to launch the show from there. I agree with you though that the incoming trial does put a dent on the excitement which explains why the estate and the cirque du soleil have found it pointless to advertise in the US so far. I am sure there will be some heavy advertisement as soon as the trial is over. As for Canada, they will definitely be some form of advertisement starting this week. watch out for TV adverts and billboards in the country soon.

Is anyone been to Mandalay bay event center?
I am planning a trip to LV this year and want to go to see the show when I was there.
I would like to get the floor seat but 2 of my friends who are going with me is not big MJ fans.
My question is how far is section 2XX away from the stage since they don't want to spend to much money?
I know it's an arena and can hold 12000 people.
If anyone has been to that place, can u share some experience. Thanks
I am looking forward to the Immortal CD release.
Hope it is MJ's songs in a new Cirque du Soleil style!

Yeah!!! The Immortal World Tour will have Cirque's first ever live band on stage, therefore for me it would be great if on the Cirque du Soleil soundtrack we get new versions of classics, mixes of Michael's vocal and live band. :)

I didn't intend to question targeting you but I thought most of the Cirque's show have live band on stage. This is one of the reason why they are so famous. Especially the couple most famous shows all have live band perform. Immortal tour is not the first one to have it.

No, actually the Immortal show will be the first ever Cirque show with a live band. Not even the Beatles Love or the Vivas Elvis show has a performing live band. The Immortal show is really something new and groudbreaking.
In my opinion, Cirque show is not famous for its musical component. Cirque du Soleil is not a muscial band. It's a touring circus, albeit a highly artistic circus. It's famous for its highly skillful acrobats and creative staging.

I've been to one of the most famous Cirque show, O, in Vegas. I'm sure there was no live band.
From the wikipedia page of 'O':
"The music of O was composed by Benoit Jutras and features a mix of classical Western and world instrumentation, including Chinese violin (erhu), bagpipes, African guitar and harp (kora), Colombian guitar, cello, ancient woodwinds and a wide variety of percussion instruments.[18] During the show, the score is performed by a live band situated behind glass walls above and to the side of the stage. The glass protects the musicians' equipment from moisture damage."
Perhaps the Beatles and Elvis show didn't have a live band, but all the 3 Cirque shows I have attended in the past ('Saltimbanco', 'Alegria' and 'Quidam') had live bands as well.
Besides, saying that Cirque is not famous for his music is also a peculiar statement. Sure they are well known for their staging, however, while you and we are watching that the music is enhancing the emotions. I've got several DVD's and CD's of their shows, and I mostly listen to the CD's because their music is so powerful. It's also an aspect that is quite different from the more 'classical' circus music, just as the acts are different from your usual circus.
Perhaps you weren't noticing the music while immersed in 'O', in a way that would signify the harmonious creation of the whole. Just like good film music should not distract you from the film but involve you.

It's quite interesting. I know what news you guys talked about. I also read the news saying that and at that time I think the claim is quite weird. Because most of the production of circus de Soleil show did have live band performance and they did famous for their live music. For the show I've been to, I am pretty sure the O show in vegas did has live band. You can actually saw them performing during the show if you pay attention. They are after the glass wall to the side of the stage. The other show I saw in Disney land Florida called La Nouba also has a live band and singers sing live. I haven't see the LOVE and viva Elvis so I don't know about those 2 (going to see LOVE this year along with immortal tour). I remembered they actually introduced the band at the end of show for crowd to applaud for them in one of the show I saw. They are famous because they combine all different kind of the art factors also including live music performance. Some people are really into their live music and go by the CD after the show including my mom. That's why I kind of always pay attention to their live music performance. Maybe they are talking about the "tour one" and not the show which stay in one place for years. However, that's not quite right either because if I remembered correctly, the other circus show, which is a tour one, I saw in DC 2or 3 years ago also feature a live band. I really don't understand why they claimed that because it's clearly not true.

I am not saying the "all" have live band. I am just saying they claimed that immortal tour is the "first" to have live band is clearly a not true statement. Because both O and La Nouba did have live band and my mom just told me that Ka also have live band. so it's clearly that the immortal tour won't be the "first" show of Cirque du Soleil featuring live band. I also said that maybe they are talking about it's the first "tour" show to have live band since O, Ka and La Nouba are all stay in one city not tour to other places.

Thank you for this information. I hope you understand that I have no intention to discredit Cirque du Soleil when I said, in my opinoin, Cirque is not known for its musical creation. I guess I just want to say Cirque is more well known for revolutionizing circus act with the highly skillful acrobats, creative staging and the whimsical storyline. Although I'm not a big Cirque fan, I definitely think of a Cirque show very highly.
I honestly don't remember seeing a live band behind any kind of glass wall in O when I saw it in Bellagio in 2007. May be, just like what you said in the bold part, I was too immersed with the show; hence, I didn't notice it? Or, may be they change the setting of the musicians or becasue of my seat (which was quite high up)?
The interesting thing is that Cirque themselves said the Immortal show is the first Cirque show involves a live band. Why would they say that if it's not true?

Since 2005 Rihanna released new album every year except 2008. I think with Cirque show as a supporting tour and with good promotion, and possibly 1-2 unreleased songs, The Immortal album could hit #1.. Just like This Is It soundtrack did in 2009.

What? Have you even seen the show? I saw a live performance of 'Alegria', it sure did have a live band. And singers as it's characters etc. etc.
Why are you accepting everything that is being fed to you? Even here on a MJ forum, where the problems with the press and companies seem to me, well known and well documented. And questions are raised constantly.
Again, I've seen three Cirque TOUR shows, they all had a live band.

http://www.briterevolution.com/features/spotlight/cirque-du-soleils-alegria-musical-feat/
A small quote from that article:
Vanessa Napoli, the Cirque du Soleil publicist and spokesperson, says that before she worked for Cirque, she had no idea that the musicians were required to follow the artists’ lead throughout the show.
Please read some comments on 'Alegria' shows this year as well:

Or, the arena version, surely you say the singer was not singing live, just read the first comments on that one:
http://www.cirquetribune.com/forum/discussion/7436/alegria-in-arena-review-a.k.a-god-damnit-nancy
As you know Cirque so well, have you read the testimonials at the official site, at 'meet the team'?
I still don't understand where all that 'first time with a live band' crap is coming from, but is sounds disrespectful (to me) to their own people to say the least.

It came direct from the mouth of the creative director and producer face to face with me, personally I don't think they are in the habit of lying so I know who to believe in this instance.

You know what, compared to 'Love', Cirque's Beatles show, they are right. Compared to other shows not. Or can you point me and others to facts that show how all the musicians that Cirque employ around the world at their various shows are miming and not playing live?
I can't wait for this show to come!
I really think it will be great and do MJ justice!

Just came back home after the very last rehearsal and the very first public performance of the Immortal World Tour.
We got the whole show plus some bonus they'll use for tv commercials, they were filming them today!
NO Cascio songs, they switched Monster for Threatened yesterday so it would be ready for today. As for breaking news, no music, only little tiny bits of the video during another song (the multiple screen part of the video)
Pretty similar to the reviews already written by others except that we saw it from start to very end.
Won't say more since it's written no spoilers ;)
As usual, the guys are ADORABLE! Talked with Philipp again, Giannini (who said to me 3 times he wanted to steal my Pepsi coat!), Lico, Jamie King, Keven Anthunes, Greg Philiganes, one of the twins guy, said hi to Guy Laliberté... well, busy day!

Thanks for your info about the final rehearsal, it sounds as though they really have taken the previous criticism on board and made the necessary changes. I'm glad Monster are BN are gone. There really wasn't any need to use such controversial songs in this show when we already have known genuine equivalent songs (such as Threatened), and I'm sure that most people wouldn't have a problem with them using the small video clip from Breaking News. I really wanna so those commercials now! Unfortunately I live in the UK and can't get to the US to see the shows so will have to wait a loooong time to see the show, so for a while the reports on here, the soon to be published media reviews and TV commercials on YouTube are all I will have. Fingers crossed the media reviews are positive!

So to answer couple of previous questions, no there wasn't any non-disclosure to sign, no one said we had to hide something. No new songs. There are 2 times we hear a beat I don't know, but it lasts like 3-4 seconds and blends into a known MJ songs, so it was maybe just a musician thing to make new sounds for an intro. No new lyrics or anything like it.
And yes it is a great show :) A great show with great people!

Michael Jackson 'On Steroids': Cirque du Soleil Show Promises 'More'
http://www.billboard.com/photos/stylus/1221739-cirque-du-soleil-sketches-617-409.jpg
Eleven months after announcing the Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour, writer/director Jamie King and his collaborators at Cirque du Soleil are itching to get the production under way on Oct. 2 in Montreal. And the Jackson estate -- which authorized and partnered in the project -- is making more plans for the late star for 2012.
"It's an ambitious show," King, who was part of Jackson's Dangerous World Tour in 1992 and has also worked with Madonna, Prince, Rihanna, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, the Spice Girls and others, tellsBillboard.com. "Everything about this project has felt large. Being around (Jackson), he always wanted everything larger, bigger -- more confetti, more pyro, more magic. He wanted fans to feel like they were getting the best experience ever, so we started with that and moved forward.
Cirque du Soleil: See Show Sketches of IMMORTAL Show (http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/michael-jackson-tour/videos-extras/photos.aspx)
"With every aspect of this show we've pushed the envelope -- costumes, music, going above and beyond what Michael was as a star and really putting it on steroids, taking it to the next level."
King is loathe to reveal too many details about The Immortal World Tour, which incorporated 10 choreographers and a live band led by longtime Jackson keyboardist Gregg Phillinganes that will perform more than 60 songs from Jackson's catalog -- backing the late singer's recorded vocals.
"It was important to have a live band; Michael always had a live band in his show," King notes. "You can imagine what it feels like to have people who actually played music with Michael there, playing it again."
King says he directed musical designer Kevin Antunes to be as inventive as possible with arrangements and mash-ups -- not unlike Cirque du Soleil treatments of the Beatles' catalog in the LOVE show or the Elvis Presley repertoire for Viva Elvis. "Definitely all the hits that the fans want to hear are there," King promises. " 'Beat It,' Thriller,' 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' ' -- the big, iconic songs are there, with some other songs mixed and matched throughout. There's some younger Michael in there as well, 'Ben,' the Motown stuff...It's a mixed bag of tricks in terms of songs. It's a music-driven show, so we're making sure the music is the narrative that drives us and takes us on the journey."
A soundtrack album from The Immortal World Tour is tentatively slated to be released by year's end.
King says the production is "overall really just a celebration of the man," and he says he took into account fan reactions and suggestions that came after the show was announced in November of 2010. "How they remember Michael has been a good jumping off point," he explains. "A big thing was they wanted to make sure Michael's iconic choreography is a big part of the show, and certainly in collaboration with Cirque...we've taken that to the next level as well. If there's something you'd typically see on the stage floor, they ask, 'Can we put that in the air? Can we fly that performer doing the same type of choreography?' They really provide the magic."
Unlike the upcoming Jackson tribute concert his family is presenting Oct. 8 in Wales, The Immortal World Tour is an authorized partnership with the Estate of Michael Jackson. Attorney Howard Weitzman says he and other estate officials -- including executors John Branca and John McClain -- have kept "really close tabs" on the production during development and rehearsals and have been satisfied with what they've seen so far.
"I think the estate would like the show to be a celebration of Michael's creativity, his legacy and his music and wants it to be an everlasting tribute to Michael's art and his genius," Weitzman explains. "Michael was a big fan of Cirque du Soleil. It's a great marriage." He adds that Cirque and the estate "jointly participated in the selection of the music. They then took those songs...and blew it up into a spectacular presentation."
The Immortal World Tour will visit 60 North American cities before wrapping up in early July in Chicago. The production will then take up residency at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
Weitzman says that in addition to the Cirque show, the Jackson estate is contemplating several other projects. The 25th anniversary of the "Bad" album in 2012 may be commemorated with a special package similar to 2008's "Thriller 25," while another set of unreleased material to follow 2010's "Michael" collection is also being considered. "It's a pretty vibrant estate in the sense that it continues to generate not just catalog opportunities but plenty of other ideas," Weitzman says.
As for the tribute concert, which is slated to feature performances by the Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, Leona Lewis, Ne-Yo and Cee Lo Green, Weitzman says the estate is "kind of watching it like everybody else. They've never really had any discussions with us, so we're just watching it all go by."

Cirque goes big with Jackson tourBy MAXIME DEMERS QMI AGENCY
http://storage.canoe.ca/v1/dynamic_resize/?src=http://www.lfpress.com/entertainment/stage/2011/09/30/cirque_248.jpg&size=248x186
MONTREAL -- With Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour set to premiere Sunday at the Bell Centre, before touring across Canada this fall, the Cirque du Soleil is coming out of its comfort zone.
This is its first show conceived specifically for arenas.
"Le Cirque likes to take risks, and that is even more true this time around," Cirque du Soleil president and CEO Daniel Lamarre said in an interview earlier this week.
"Immortal is really taking us elsewhere. It's an interpretation of a rock show by Cirque du Soleil. In seeing the show this week, we decided, Guy (Laliberte) and I, that this would start a new type of show."
Arena shows comprise a big market already occupied by global music stars such as Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and others, whose tour profits are enormous.
"There is big potential there," Lamarre said. "For us, our big challenge is to offer this type of show, but without having the star (Michael Jackson) there. We had to deal with those obstacles.
"We don't take anything for granted here. We are going into it with a lot of humility. This is a very risk undertaking for us, because we are hitting a new market and a way of touring that is very different to what we have done until now. But if we don't want to become stagnant, it's important to do it this way."
Dedicated to the creative universe of the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour will tour Canada and then the U.S. for a year before moving on to Europe and Asia.
"We hope to tour for four years," Lamarre said. "People may not be aware of it, but there will be many foreign promoters from Asia, Japan, South America and Europe that will be in Montreal on Sunday night to see what the Circus is doing in the context of a rock show. The reaction in Montreal will surely have an influence on the show's longevity."
In North America, the promoters were fairly easy to convince, Lamarre admitted.
"We had a card up our sleeve in Michael Jackson," he said. "Michael Jackson is still extremely contemporary. And all of this is done following (the planned) concert (This Is It) that would have had huge success in London. He sold thousands of seats in 24 hours for his shows in London. And we experienced something similar when we sold tickets in North America. We sold more than $40 million in tickets in 24 hours. This is unheard of."
Though familiar with moving from city to city with the equipment for its show under the tent, the Cirque du Soleil had to adapt to new logistics for the arena tour. A promoter at the Bell Centre told Lamarre that the previous biggest production ever staged at that arena required 26 trucks to move in all the equipment. "We have 38," Lamarre said.

Cirque hosts world premiere of Michael Jackson’s ‘Immortal’ in Montreal

The new Michael JacksonImmortal spectacular may wind up being the largest touring rock show ever. Rumors are that it will take 47 double-stretched trucks to move the 180,000 pounds of stage equipment and a 200-strong cast and crew around North America for the next two years -- and then around the world for the next two years.
We’ll know all the mind-blowing logistics for certain Sunday night in Montreal when Cirque du Soleil throws the world premiere and gala party for the $100 million production. I’ll be there for the festivities, and we’ll have a full report Monday. Fans from all over the world have already started arriving in the Canadian city and received a tour of last-minute rehearsals this week.
I previously interviewed director and choreographer Jamie King (http://www.vegasdeluxe.com/blogs/luxe-life/2011/may/04/director-jamie-king-reveals-secrets-emmichael-jack/), who is at the helm of Immortaland worked with Michael on the Thriller, Bad and History tours.
As a comparison, the newest Britney Spears tour checked in at 125,000 pounds with 40 semis, so you have a good idea of the monster-sized Immortal road show that lands at Mandalay Bay on Dec. 3 for two performances a night through Dec. 27.Immortal precedes the second Michael Jackson show that will become Cirque’s eighth residency production on The Strip when it moves into the reconverted Lion King Theater at Mandalay Bay in early 2013.
I’m told that we can expect “a riveting fusion of visuals, dance, music and fantasy to take audiences right inside Michael’s creative world and turn his signature moves upside down.” Jamie added: “The show captures the essence, soul and inspiration of The King of Pop celebrating a legacy that continues to transcend generations.”
To kick off the tour stop here in December, the shows will be combined with the first-ever estate-authorized Michael Jackson Fan Fest. The experience promises up-close looks at memorabilia, items from Neverland Ranch, photo opportunities in a re-created set, videos, plus a behind-the-scenes look at the creation ofImmortal, which I’ll report here Monday and Tuesday.
Members of the Immortal creative team will fly here to take part in Q&As with fans. Attendees get the chance to compete against one another in contests centered on Ubisoft’s newly released video game “The Michael Jackson Experience.” This larger-than-life interactive and immersive salute to Michael will open for four hours before each Mandalay Bay show.
We’ll have all the secrets of Immortal and the residency show here at Vegas DeLuxe on Monday and Tuesday, so be sure to check back.

Cirque du Soleil premieres Jackson show
http://www.montrealgazette.com/entertainment/5484312.bin
Cirque du Soleil performers rehearse for Sunday’s world premiere at the Bell Centre of its new show, Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour, which unexpectedly coincides with the trial of the doctor charged in connection with Jackson’s death.
MONTREAL - The timing is, to say the least, bizarre.
The Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour show is making its debut at the Bell Centre on Sunday within days of the kickoff of the trial of the doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s death.
Meanwhile, the late singer’s brother Jermaine is launching a book titled You Are Not Alone, Michael: Through a Brother’s Eyes.
Publicity like this you cannot buy. And, for that matter, who would want to?
Jermaine may have timed his book to coincide with the trial and/or the show. But when the Cirque du Soleil booked the Bell Centre a year ago, CEO Daniel Lamarre says, no one had any idea when the trial would take place.
Lamarre was the only Cirque person available to talk to the press this week about the MJ show. The pressure is on. Press exposure is being limited before opening because “everyone is working like crazy,” he said, and it was imperative they stay focused on their task. (Earlier, another Cirque representative had told the Gazette that artists weren’t available for interviews because the Jackson Estate had requested that the show be kept under wraps until opening.)
Lamarre, who like this writer, spent last weekend in Los Angeles because of yet another Cirque opening (Iris at the Kodak Theatre), said the back-to-back timing of the two shows was accidental. Each one had its own momentum, and in the case of Iris, a construction schedule interrupted by the Academy Awards, which take place in the same building. “In an ideal world, we would have done that differently,” he said.
The Iris opening was less stressful on its creators, however, because the show had had a couple of months of previews. When I talked to director Philippe Decouflé two days before the opening, he wasn’t nervous at all. Everything was already rolling smoothly. In contrast, the MJ show – which has been in rehearsal since May and has a budget of around $60 million – is going to have its first public airing on Sunday.
This is a completely different situation. “Promoters are coming from around the world on Sunday to see the show,” Lamarre said. “So we’d better be ready. We’re certainly not treating it as a preview. We’re treating it as a worldwide premiere.”
Why no previews? “Here, we’re in a different world,” he explained. “It’s not a theatre show. It’s not a big top show. In the rock ’n’ roll world, it’s different. This show is more like a rock concert than anything else.”
What about circus acts? “There are circus acts because we’re Cirque du Soleil. But we’re treating it like you would a rock concert, without a rock star. So I’d call it a translation, a translation by Cirque du Soleil of a rock concert. You will have a lot of dance, a lot of video. You will have acrobatic acts. But you will have most and foremost, all of the hits of Michael Jackson.”
Fans of the late singer will, no doubt, be ecstatic about that.
“One thing that inspired us all along,” Lamarre continued, “is that we have a lot of people in the show who have worked with Michael Jackson, starting with director Jamie King. He is kind of the hot guy in the world of rock concerts. He has been working with Madonna, Britney Spears and Rihanna. But what people forget is that Jamie was once a dancer with Michael Jackson. So he knows Michael very well. He knows his universe. That’s why we selected him. Because we wanted to make sure that we would respect the artistic taste of Michael Jackson.”
Another close Jackson associate, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, is the musical director of the show. “Greg was the conductor on most of Michael Jackson’s touring shows,” Lamarre said. “And he knows his musical universe perfectly.”
Other marks of authenticity include several performers who had been signed to do Michael Jackson’s This Is It (the show he never gave). Plus, “We have been able to get some video that Michael was supposed to use in that London Show.”
At least two of the Jackson brothers, Tito and Jackie, are expected to attend Sunday night’s opening at the Bell Centre. Other members of the family may show but haven’t confirmed. Although they are all keeping close watch on the trial of Conrad Murray in Los Angeles, courts are usually closed on weekends.
Lamarre doesn’t foresee the trial having any effect on the show’s tour of almost 60 cities, as most of the tickets are already sold. (About 23,000 for the first two shows at the Bell Centre.) “At the end of the day, the show will do the talking,” he said. “If people love the show, it will sell a ton of tickets.”
Undoubtedly. It would be pretty tough to go wrong with a Michael Jackson tribute show. Especially when you’ve got 10 top-notch choreographers (including Debra Brown, Travis Payne and Jamal Sims) working the dance numbers. “We have about two hours of the music of Michael Jackson,” Lamarre explained. “So it’s very important that each scene is different.”
There are 76 performers in the MJ show (four more than in Iris), a live orchestra, plenty of Jackson video footage, but no clowns or singers. The only voice featured will be that of the King of Pop himself.
What about the look? “There are three vans of costumes,” Lamarre said. The set is by Mark Fisher, who has ruled the rock world for decades, did the Cirque’s Ka in Vegas, and designed U2’s last tour.
It takes 38 trucks to ship the entire show.
Keeping in mind that this is but the first of two Michael Jackson shows that the Cirque is producing. The second one will be installed permanently in the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas in 2013.
“That one will be more of a theatre show, like Viva Elvis or Love,” Lamarre explained.
Will it be directed by the same person (Jamie King)? “That’s something we’re exploring right now,” he replied.

It is not "just the millionth mj compilation of songs we already have". It is a remix album with songs from the show!
MJNA can confirm The Estate, @Cirque & Epic Records will be releasing a remix album featuring the music from The Immortal World Tour! The soundtrack album from The Immortal World Tour is slated to be released Nov. 21. The project is being overlooked by L.A. Reid.

That is very important. I will be seeing the show tomorrow night, and i expect a show like I've never seen before.
I hope they get an amazing reaction...
Also, $40 million in 24 hours is a huge feat. Look at the movies, only the big blockbusters do that in one day, and usually they have a huge publicity machine behind them. The Cirque hasn't advertised the shows much...I think they want to be restful because of the trial. But great word of mouth will help...until November.

Hi guys,
Just got back from the General Rehearsal at the Bell Centre.
IT WAS AMAZING!!!
I know someone who has a connection to the Cirque, and they (out of the blue) gave me two tickets on Michaelmas Day (September 29th) ! I see it as a miracle. :)
This show is going to blow your minds!
I got there in time to see Travis Payne (I think) leading a group of people of all ages dancing to They Don't Really Care About Us outside in the rain. The rain did not succeed in dampening the crowd's enthusiasm, and there were tons of people milling around. It was hard to find a spot to be able to see, as there were at least three rows of people n front of me. Shoulda got there earlier. lol
I'm gonna post this now, and add more in another post. Mods, feel free to merge them afterwards.

Our seats were pretty high up. The first thing one sees when entering the show is a big pic of Michael.
We watched as the building gradually filled up with people. By 8 pm, it was practically full.
The show got underway on time.
SPOILER ALERT>
If you don't want to hear about the show, look away now. lol
So the lights dimmed, and DJ Bubbles comes out. He dances, and he does a bunch of stuff while MJ music plays, such as leading a few members of the audience on stage, who dance to MJ's music. He also throws bananas into the crowd. lol He was great.
Then, some MJ-dressed dancers come out (looking like the Jackson brothers) and they dance and do some awesome routines including hanging in suspension in front of a screen, where they 'spray paint' cool grafitti on the scenes of buildings etc. on screen.

Dang, I'm already starting to forget stuff. Oh well, I'm sure others will come share info.
After about 25 mins, it was announced that it was now intermission. Which confused us, as the show had really just started. There might have been a glitch, they may have been saving some material for the premiere tomorrow... Who knows. Anyway, i spent that time chatting with my friend.
When the show resumed, there was a huge BANG, and there was MJ, plastered all over the screens!
By the way, the sound is very loud! I see what they mean, that this is a rock concert.

I'm just going to jump around with my thoughts here. lol
The music was fantastic. Some snippets of MJ songs interwoven with MJ speaking. I loved that. And then for full routines, they would use entire songs.
Although our view of the screens was partially obscured, there was footage that I had never seen before of MJ from This Is It.
The show features mind blowing pyrotechnics, and the use of light, especially in costumes, was unbelievable. There was at one point, a huge pair of MJ shoes and socks, and dancers came out of them. Lots of MJ dressed dancers, with lights all over there costumes, so they looked like light MJs.
We heard:
Man in the Mirror
Smooth Criminal
Threatened
Thriller
Billie Jean
Beat It
Remember the Time
Blame it on the Boogie
Rock with You
Don't stop till you get enough
Shake your Body
Earth Song
Ben
ABC...
And many more, covering MJ's whole life.
The only major song we didn't get that I can think of was Heal The World
I feel they did a great job presenting MJ's message.
One thing I found strange was the shape of the stage, and the centre tree. They both looked to me like a character.. I won't say who, as you probably won't know who I'm talking about. But it was ccol, because MJs were dancing all over them! lol

The tour ends around July in the US. so they probably move to London around Aug 2012???

WOW So glad you got to see the show tonight, I was at the Quebec final rehearsal and I was at Travisù,s flashmob tonight, it was incredible!
Very happy you've been able to experience it already!Merci beaucoup Carine, c'est gentil. :)
Sounds great !!!
Was Who Is It played?
I can't wait to see more TII footage. - I still hope they release a TII fan edition with a hell lot of extra material!I think there may have been parts of that song, but not the whole song. They did play most of Another Part of Me though.
The ending of the show is beautiful. Michael (a dancer clad in white, a representation of Michael, perhaps his spirit, or soul,) is standing in front of the tree. Each dancer comes up to Michael carrying a big red glowing heart. As they come forth to Michael, they raise their hearts with his.
There are scenes of starving children and devastation during Earth Song. I hope these shows wake a lot of people up.
Thank you God, for giving us Michael.
Edit- Oh yeah, forgot to add; the scenes on the screens are often very short, fast clips. It was hard to take everything in. And as I said, our view was partially obstructed, so I didn't see as well as I would have liked. But hey, I'm not complaining. lol Just glad to have been there.
Edit- Just remembered another part of the show. There is a big book centre stage. The text is in ancient-type font. I couldn't read what is said, because I was too far, but a green dancer dances on it. Then Michael comes and dances on it? Dunno if I'm remembering correctly from last night. I see it like this- the book is first tainted somehow, and Michael purifies it? Someone will correct me please, if I get anything wrong.

Well, I remember seeing a headshot of MJ in his Smooth Criminal getup from This Is It. Also, they show that awesome scene where he breaks through the window, although I know you've seen that. The images fly so fast that it's hard to store them in memory. They're probably in there somewhere though. lol The show is jam-packed. Ooh, that reminds me, there was a scene during Jam (yes, they played that one) where the dancers do a cool basketball routine, with balls. And they did a fantastic rendition of Childhood, with the child sitting on a crescent moon, watching.
Edt- and during Childhood, there is a balloon carrying the child that floats over the scene.
I wish I could remember more.
Keep asking me questions guys, it helps jog my memory.
Oh yeah, there are lots of images of clocks.. time..
And they also did Scream, and I Just Can't Stop Loving You.
If I remember correctly, for Scream, they had robot, machine men.
Speaking of which, they also did Dancing Machine.
I remember the word "back' echoed...
They also did They Don't really Care about Us. There was This Is It footage there too, which included the orange background scene, with the big M lit up from behind.
During Childhood, I saw three five point stars, pointing up.
There is also footage from Moonwalker, where MJ opens the door and there's great light and wind.
At one point, there is a huge glittery glove with a dancer in it, and a huge fedora with dancers under it.
Two dancers dressed as elephants danced. There were also other large animal representations made out of wire-like material, with dancers inside them that made them move and dance.

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Michael Jackson's mother and his three children will be immersed in the pop icon's music, dance and imagery as they attend the premiere of Cirque du Soleil's "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" in Montreal, Canada, Sunday.
Katherine Jackson, who sat through four days of disturbing testimony in the trial of the doctor charged in her son's death, agreed with the Michael Jackson estate and Cirque du Soleil just this past week to attend the opening performance this weekend, according to a source close to the Jackson family.
The agreement is a sign Katherine Jackson and the men who now control her son's estate as executors have reached an understanding that should ease the tensions that erupted in probate court soon after Michael Jackson's death in 2009, the source said.
Jackson's mother waged a legal challenge against lawyer John Branca and music executive John McClain, who were named as executors in her son's will, but dropped it several months later. Relations between the Jackson family and the estate have been tense from that beginning.
How Jackson family is coping The trip, which includes Prince, Paris and Blanket Jackson, will not end until October 9 when they return to Los Angeles following the Michael Forever Tribute show in Cardiff, Wales, next Saturday, the source said.
With several of Michael Jackson's brothers and sisters also traveling to the Wales concert, most of the Jackson family's eight seats in Dr. Conrad Murray's trial will likely go empty until next week.
Jackson's children never saw their father perform live on stage, but the Cirque du Soleil show promises for two hours to "capture the essence, soul and inspiration of the King of Pop, celebrating a legacy that continues to transcend generations."
The road tour will reach at least 47 cities in the United States and Canada over the next year.
The circus company, legendary for its creative and acrobatic performances, first talked to Jackson seven years ago about the possibility of a Jackson-themed show, Cirque's president said when the agreement with his estate was announced in April 2010. The estate and Cirque du Soleil are equal partners.
The MGM Mirage has signed on to host the Las Vegas, Nevada, residency starting in 2012. The hotel also will open a nightclub based on the Jackson show, the hotel said.

@the bold part: This could explain why the Estate hasn't really put a stop to this GL concert. It seems they are allowing this to happen in exchange of KJ not interfering with the Estate affairs in the future. Don't know.
