Michael Jackson has set many records throughout his career and won many awards from the early days of the Jackson 5 to the current day. Michael has won more awards than any other artist.

We offer the information on ceremonies of Awards, on which Michael accepted awards, about awards. We will present information, photos and video chronologically, since the first moments of a recognition and finishing … isn't present, it will be impossible to finish this theme. Because the meteoric shower of awards proceeds, and we trust, will proceed still long …

Let's admire the moments of triumph what there was a set in its bright destiny.
It is an tribute of admiration and love.

We have finished to collect it and place it here.

NAACP Image Awards

Best Singing Group of the Year

An NAACP Image Award is an accolade presented by the American National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to honor outstanding people of color in film, television, music, and literature.
Vebsite - http://www.naacpimageawards.net/41/home/

Similar to other awards, like the Oscars and the Grammys, the 35 categories of Image Awards are voted on by members of the NAACP. There are also honorary awards, including the President's Award, the Chairman's Award, Entertainer of the Year and The Image Award Hall of Fame.

The awards were first presented in 1967. The awards series, normally broadcast with tape delay and aired by Fox Network, was broadcast live for the first time in 2007 for the 38th edition of the awards show. It was first nationally televised in 1974. The annual ceremonies usually take place in or around the Los Angeles area in February or early March.

In 1970 "I Want You Back" the Jackson 5ive's first single with Motown from their debut album, Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5ive, was released in late 1969 and the week of January 31, 1970, become their fist number one hit single on Billboard's pop singles chart, where it spent one week. The single also went to number one on Billboard's Black singles chart.
The Jackson 5ive perform "I Want You Back" on Andy Williams Show.

At the 2nd edition of NAACP Image Awards, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 receive the NAACP Image award for Best Singing Group of the Year from the National Association For The Advancement Of Black People.

It was no one-off award. The boys, with their clean cut image and wholesome message, were seen as perfect role models for black kids all over America.

Three albums – the unimaginatively named Third Album, a Christmas collection and Maybe Tomorrow – each sold millions. The adulation kept growing too. During their second tour one concert had to be cut short when a huge crowd of over-excited young girls stormed the stage. The show was resumed but the same thing happened again at the end.

Best Singing Group of the Year - The Jackson 5

In January 1971, The Jackson 5 received the NAACP Image Award for Best Singing Group of the Year.

They also attended the Grammy Awards in April where they were nominated for Best Contemporary Vocal Group.

1971

Key To The City Of Gary Indiana

For the first time since they moved to California, the Jackson 5 returned to their hometown, Gary. They played two benefit concerts for the re-election campaign for Mayor Richard Hatcher. In return, January 31, 1971, was declared "Jackson Five Day" in Gary. A ceremony was held in front of the family's old home to officially rename their street from Jackson Street to Jackson Five Street.

They came via helicopter and landed in the football field at West Side High School, where their concerts were to be held. As part of homecoming, a plaque was placed at the University of Indiana stating that the Jackson 5 gave "Hope to the Young". Their Congressman then presented them with the flag from the top of the State Capital.

At the City Hall, Mayor Hatcher presented Mr. Jackson and each of the J5 individual "keys to the city" of Gary. After the ceremonies at city Hall, the honorary denizens of Gary-namely the Jackson 5-rushed back to West Side High School, where they performed two concerts before a capacity crowd of more than 15,000 home town fans.

These award presentations and performances were filmed and later used in their TV special, Going Back to Indiana.

On September 20, 1971, the Jackson Five receive commendations for “contributions to American youth”. The Congressional Record reads that “despite their fantastic commercial success, members of the Jackson Five are continuing their education , and more such complimentary assertions.

Michael Jackson - 29 Awards

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Music_Award

The Jackson 5 were one of very few in recording history to have their first four major label singles reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

The Jackson 5 became an instant sensation, with "I Want You Back" and its 1970 followups "ABC", "The Love You Save," and "I'll Be There" all going to number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Best Selling Soul Singles chart.

"The Love You Save" charted atop the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and "I'll Be There" remained at the top position of the chart for four weeks, which is tied with "I Want You Back" for the most successful single for the band in the United States. The three singles were commercially successful internationally, mainly peaking within the top ten on music charts.

In 1971, Motown began a spin-off solo career for Michael, whose first single, "Got to Be There" became a Top 5 hit. Michael also sang the title track for the 1972 motion picture Ben. His other successful solo singles included "Rockin' Robin" and "I Wanna Be Where You Are" (both 1972)

July 1, 1972. Michael appears by himself to promote his Got To Be There album. Includes a chat with Dick Clark and solo performances of Rockin' Robin, Ben and I Wanna Be Where You Are. His brothers make a surprise appearance and are presented with gold discs, Michael joins them in a performance of Lookin' Through The Windows.

Golden Globe Awards

Best Original Song "Ben"

A Golden Globe Award is an accolade presented by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to recognize excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign. The annual formal ceremony and dinner at which the awards are presented is a major part of the film industry's awards season, which culminates each year with the Academy Awards.

The broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards, telecast to more than 150 countries worldwide, generally ranks as the third most-watched awards show each year, behind only the Oscars and the Grammy Awards.
The first Golden Globe Awards were held in 1944, at the 20th Century Fox studios. It has since been held annually, at various locations. Throughout the next decade, it will be held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

In 1964, the national telecast was distributed through a special segment on The Andy Williams Show.

The awards show income has enabled the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to donate millions of dollars to entertainment-related charities, as well as funding scholarships and other programs for future film and television professionals.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Globe_Award

In 1972, Michael Jackson wins the "Best Original Song" in a movie for his song, "Ben", at the Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The theme song of the 1972 film, "Ben", it is a melancholy ballad to the film's title character, a trained/telepathic rat.

Michael Jackson’s fourth single, “Ben”, was released in August 1972. The song was written for a film of the same name .
The response to the single was massive; going to number 1 in the US and Australia and number 7 in the UK and selling over 2 million copies.
It became Michael Jackson’s first ever solo number 1 single. Michael became the third youngest artist to have a number 1 hit at just fourteen years old.
The song was nominated for an Academy Award in 1973, where Michael performed the song. “Ben” won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1973.

Ben is a 1972 film about a young boy named Danny (Lee Montgomery) and his pet rat, Ben. This film is a sequel to the 1971 film Willard.
A lonely boy named Danny Garrison befriends the rat that leads the swarm of trained/telepathic rats found in Willard. This rat, whom the boy names Ben (after he hears about the leader of a flock of killer rats), becomes the boy's best friend and keeps his spirits up in the face of bullying and his terrible illness.

However, the balance of power between Danny and Ben begins to shift, with Ben beginning to control the boy and the swarm becoming increasingly irrational and violent. Ben becomes violent when the townfolk use pesticide and kill his partner "Socrates".

Eventually, the police destroy many members of the rat colony. However, Ben survives. The film closes with Danny, determined not to lose his friend, tending to a badly injured Ben.

The film's title theme song, "Ben," performed by Michael Jackson, became a #1 pop hit single. Later included on Jackson's album of the same name, "Ben".

The song is calm and mellow, which contrasts with the horror content of the film. A live recorded version was released on the 1981 album The Jacksons Live! and eventually appeared on Jackson's Number Ones album in 2003.

Crispin Glover re-recorded a version of the song for the soundtrack of the 2003 remake of Willard.

Academy Awards

Nominated

March 27

The Academy Award, also known as the Oscar, is an accolade bestowed by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry.
The formal ceremony at which the awards are presented is one of the most prominent award ceremonies in the world, and is televised live in more than 200 countries annually. It is also the oldest award ceremony in the media.

The AMPAS was originally conceived by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio boss Louis B. Mayer as a professional honorary organization to help improve the film industry’s image and help mediate labor disputes. The Oscar itself was later initiated by the Academy as an award "of merit for distinctive achievement" in the industry.
The best known award - the Oscar statuette (the Academy Award of Merit).
The root of the name Oscar is contested.
The trophy was officially dubbed the "Oscar" in 1939 by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
In late December ballots and copies of the Reminder List of Eligible Releases are mailed to around 6000 active members. For most categories, members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees only in their respective categories.
The major awards are presented at a live televised ceremony, most commonly in February or March following the relevant calendar year, and six weeks after the announcement of the nominees. It is the culmination of the film awards season, which usually begins during November or December of the previous year. This is an elaborate extravaganza, with the invited guests walking up the red carpet in the creations of the most prominent fashion designers of the day.
The Academy Awards is televised live across the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, the United Kingdom, and gathers millions of viewers elsewhere throughout the world.

45th Academy Awards were presented March 27, 1973 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. The ceremonies were presided over by Carol Burnett, Michael Caine, Charlton Heston, and Rock Hudson.

The ceremony was marked by Marlon Brando's boycott of the Oscars and his sending of Sacheen Littlefeather to explain why he would not show up to collect his Best Actor award for The Godfather, and by Charles Chaplin's first competitive Oscar win for Best Original Score for his 20-year-old film Limelight, which was eligible due to a technicality. Chaplin had received an honorary Oscar the previous year.
Cabaret, Bob Fosse's revival of the Broadway stage musical, set a record for the most Oscars won without winning Best Picture.
The Best Music/Song prize went to Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn for The Morning After from The Poseidon Adventure.

American Music Award

The AMAs were created by Dick Clark in 1973 to compete with the Grammys after the move of that year's show to Nashville, Tennessee led to CBS picking up the Grammy telecasts after its first two in 1971 and 1972 were broadcast on ABC.
From its inception in 1973 until 2003, the AMAs have been held in mid- to late-January, but were moved to November beginning in 2003 so as not to further compete with other major awards shows (such as the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards) and allows for ABC to have a well-rated awards show during November sweeps.
Stories of artists being pressured to participate in one awards show over the other have been fodder for tabloid gossip and controversy. The controversy was muted somewhat after the AMAs moved to late November, avoiding being in the same awards season as the Grammys.
Also, the American Music Awards have nominations based on sales and airplay (even if the album is old), while the Grammys only nominate albums from their eligibility period.
Although the American Music Awards is primarily for artists that originate from the United States, international artists like Elton John, Def Leppard, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, George Michael, Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Justin Bieber, Muse, and the Spice Girls have also won awards on the show, although this is primarily due to their popularity in the United States.
The most American Music Awards for a group belongs to Alabama who have collected twenty-three awards.
The record for most American Music Awards won held by Michael Jackson who has amassed twenty-six awards (twenty-four as solo artist), including one for "Artist of the Century", but not the poll of "Artist of the '80s".
The record for the most American Music Awards won in a single year is held by both Michael Jackson (in 1984), and Whitney Houston (in 1994), each with 8 awards to their credit (including the Award of Merit) , with which both artists were honored in the respective years).
In 2000 the AMAs held a poll to elect the Artist of the Decade for each previous decade of the Rock & Roll era. The results were:

'50s: Elvis Presley
'60s: The Beatles
'70s: Stevie Wonder
'80s: Michael Jackson
'90s: Garth Brooks

http://www.digparty.com/wiki/American_Music_Award

The first ceremony was hosted by Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond show with Rodney Allen Rippy and Ricky Segall in 1974, and the awards themselves have gone on to be one of the major music awards of the year.
Michael to present awards with Donny Osmond to The Temptations and with Donny Osmond, Ricky Segal and Ricky Allen to the Carpenters.
Soon Michael becomes not simply host ceremony, but the main hero...

The Jackson 5 were nominated for "Best Contemporary Vocal Group" along with The Beatles, The Carpenters, Chicago, and Simon and Garfunkel.

The Jackson 5 was nominated twice for the music industry's highest honor. The first was for best contemporary group vocal performance of 1970 ("ABC"), the second was for best R&B group vocal performance of 1974 ("Dancing Machine").

The Jackson 5 lost both Grammy bids. In 1970, the boys lost best contemporary group vocal performance to the Carpenters ("Close to You") and in 1974 lost the R&B prize to Rufus ("Tell Me Something Good").

In 1974 The Jackson 5 presented an award to Gladys Knight & The Pips at the Grammy Awards.

Shelly Manne and the Jackson Five (Randy is in the place of Jermaine for this) with Manne playing call-and-response drums with the Jackson Five, performing a medley of the year's hit songs, including War's "Cisco Kid," the Spinners' "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love," and the O'Jays' "Love Train."

Shelly Manne (June 11, 1920 – September 26, 1984), born Sheldon Manne in New York City, was an American jazz drummer. Most frequently associated with West Coast jazz, he was known for his versatility and also played in a number of other styles, including Dixieland, swing, bebop, avant-garde jazz and fusion, as well as contributing to the musical background of hundreds of Hollywood films and television programs.

Donald Clark "Donny" Osmond (born December 9, 1957) is an American singer, musician, actor, dancer, radio personality, and former teen idol. Osmond has also been a talk and game show host, record producer and author.
As a very young child, he and his brothers started out as kid singers on The Andy Williams Show. In the late '60s and early '70s, fueled by the success of The Jackson Five, the Osmonds became close teenybopper competitors, with their own slew of hits. Donny was the centerpiece, and he competed with Michael Jackson for the hearts (and dollars) of pre-teens everywhere.
Between a highly successful teen career in the 1970s, and his rebirth in the 1990s, Osmond's career was stymied during the 1980s by what some have perceived as his "boy scout" image. Osmond stated on the May 1, 2009 Larry King Live show that longtime friend Michael Jackson suggested he change his name to boost his image.
Later, he forged a very successful solo career.

BRI Awards

Pair of BRI sales awards presented to Michael Jackson to recognize the sale in the United Kingdom of more than 250,000 copies of the Epic Single Playing Record ‘Blame It On The Boogie’, 1978, and “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground),” 1979.

RIAA platinum record award

RIAA platinum record award present to Michael Jackson to commemorate the sale off more than 1,000,000 copies of the Epic records Long-Playing record albom Destiny.

Destiny is the twelfth album released by American band The Jacksons, in 1978, on Epic Records. The album would eventually sell over four million copies worldwide, two million in America during it's initial run and two million worldwide. The album would mark the first time in the band's career in which they had total artistic control, and was also the first album produced by the brothers.
Released on December 17, 1978, Destiny re-established them as a top-selling group. The single, "Blame It on the Boogie", was released in September 1978 as the advance single from the album. Although "Blame It on the Boogie" returned the Jacksons to the Hot 100 it was not the single to effect a major comeback for the Jacksons peaking at #54; However, "Blame It on the Boogie" did reach #3 R&B and would be coupled with "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" on an extended club play single which would reach #20 on the dance charts in 1979. The album's success was largely based on the second single released from the album, "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", which became a Top 10 single in the spring of 1979. The album eventually peaked at number eleven on the Billboard Pop Albums chart and number three on the Billboard Black Albums chart and went on to platinum status cementing it as the first RIAA-certified platinum seller by the Jacksons as most of their Motown recordings were uncertifiable despite their huge success on the charts, and over two million copies worldwide. The accompanying tour was a huge success running on many legs and also toured overseas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destiny_(The_Jacksons_album)

After DESTINY'S opening thumping baseline, funky guitar chords, and Michael Jackson's hiccuping "heeee-heee-heeee," there's only one sensible thing to do--blame it on the boogie. Or blame it on the Jacksons' 1978 platinum-selling album for being so damn good. The tenor of the times was finally right for the band, and everyone involved is on top form. With songs all written and produced by the Jacksons, the emphasis is on booty-shaking music with heart and real soul. Within a year Michael Jackson's OFF THE WALL album, on the charts for 52 weeks, would make him a force to be reckoned with. But on DESTINY, Michael's passion and desire is palpable, giving the album its real power and edge.

Besides "Blame it on the Boogie," DESTINY also features the disco-combustible "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)." Just about all the songs here are superlative, with standouts including Michael's delicately displayed anguish on the tender "Push Me Away," and the surprisingly poignant soul-searching "Destiny" which presciently foretells the situation the boys were soon to face as Michael's popularity soared.

Michael and his brothers celebrate the success of their album "Destiny" at the "The Jacksons" Party.
On July 1, 1979, Mayor Tom Bradley declares "Jackson Day" in Los Angeles, California, in honor of the group and their achievements. An estimated 300 guests attend the festivity at the City National Bank Vault in Beverly Hills, California, where Michael Jackson and The Jacksons also are awarded a Platinum Record for album "Destiny".

"My pride in the rhythms, the technical advances, and the success of Off the Wall was offset by the jolt I got when the Grammy nominations were announced for 1979. Although Off the Wall had been one of the most popular records of the year, it received only one nomination: Best R&B Vocal Performance. I remember where I was when I got the news. I felt ignored by my peers and it hurt. People told me later that it surprised the industry too.
I was disappointed and then I got excited thinking about the album to come. I said to myself, "Wait until next time" - they won't be able to ignore the next album. I watched the ceremony on television and it was nice to win my category, but I was still upset by what I perceived as the rejection of my peers. I just kept thinking, "Next time, next time." In many ways an artist is his work. It's difficult to separate the two. I think I can be brutally objective about my work as I create it, and if something doesn't work, I can feel it, but when I turn in a finished album - or song – you can be sure that I've given it every ounce of energy and God-given talent that I have. Off the Wall was well received by my fans and I think that's why the Grammy nominations hurt. That experience lit a fire in my soul. All I could think of was the next album and what I would do with it. I wanted it to be truly great".

Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is an 18-block series of sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA that serves as a permanent public monument to achievement in the entertainment industry. More than 2,400 5-pointed terrazzo and brass stars are embedded at 6-foot intervals over a combined 1.7 miles. The stars bear the names of an eclectic mix of actors, musicians, directors, producers, musical and theatrical groups, fictional characters, and others recognized by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for their entertainment contributions. The Walk is maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust.
According to a report by the market research firm NPO/Plog Research, the Walk attracts about 10 million visitors annually - more than Sunset Strip, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Queen Mary, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art - and it has played an important role in making tourism the largest industry in Los Angeles County

Each monument consists of a coral-pink terrazzo five-point star rimmed with brass (not bronze, an oft-repeated inaccuracy) inlaid into a charcoal-colored terrazzo background. In the upper portion of the pink star field, the name of the honoree is inlaid in brass block letters. Below the inscription, in the lower half of the star field, a round inlaid brass emblem indicates the category of the honoree's contributions.
The emblems symbolize five categories within the entertainment industry:

- Classic film camera representing motion pictures

- Television set representing broadcast television

- Phonograph record representing audio recording

- Radio microphone representing broadcast radio

- Comedy/tragedy masks representing theater/live performance (added in 1984)

To date, 47% of the stars have been awarded in the motion pictures category, 24% in television, 17% in audio recording, and 10% in radio. Only 44 stars (less than 2%) have been awarded in the live performance category. (See complete list.) Twenty to thirty new stars, on average, are added to the Walk each year.

History

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce credits E. M. Stuart, its president in the early 1950s, with the original idea for creating a Walk of Fame. According to a 1953 Chamber press release, Stuart proposed the Walk as a means to “maintain the glory of a community whose name means glamour and excitement in the four corners of the world.” Harry Sugarman, another Chamber member and president of the Hollywood Improvement Association, receives credit in some independent accounts. A committee was formed to flesh out the idea, and an architectural firm was retained to develop specific proposals. The exact origin of the "star" concept is not certain, but the historic Hollywood Hotel, which stood for over 50 years on Hollywood Blvd. at the site now occupied by the Hollywood and Highland complex and the Kodak Theatre, painted stars on its dining room ceiling over tables favored by its most famous celebrity patrons, and that may have served as an early inspiration. Another theory involves a popular Hollywood restaurant of the era called The Tropics, whose menu featured celebrity photos framed in gold stars.

By 1955, the basic concept and general design had been agreed upon, and plans were submitted to the Los Angeles City Council. In February 1956 a prototype was unveiled that featured a caricature of a "sample" honoree (John Wayne, by some accounts) on a brown star with blue background. However, caricatures proved technically too difficult to execute in brass with the technology available at the time; and the brown and blue motif, it is said, was nixed by C. E. Toberman, the legendary real estate developer known as "Mr. Hollywood", because the colors clashed with a new building he was erecting on Hollywood Blvd.

By March, 1956 the final design and coral-and-charcoal color scheme had been approved, and between the spring of 1956 and the fall of 1957, 1,550 honorees were selected by committees representing the four branches of the entertainment industry at that time: motion pictures, television, audio recording, and radio. The committees included some of the most prominent names in entertainment, such as Cecil B. DeMille, Samuel Goldwyn, Jesse Lasky, Walt Disney, Hal Roach, Mack Sennett and Walter Lantz.

Construction began in 1958, but two lawsuits delayed completion. The first was filed by local property owners opposed to the USD $1.25 million tax assessment levied upon them to pay for the Walk, along with new street lighting and trees; the second, by Charles Chaplin, Jr., sought damages for the exclusion of his father, whose nomination had been withdrawn due to pressure from multiple quarters (see below). In October 1959 the assessment was ruled legal and Chaplin's lawsuit was dismissed, paving the way for completion of the project.

On August 15, 1958, the Chamber and City unveiled eight stars on Hollywood Blvd. at Highland Avenue to create excitement and to demonstrate what the Walk would look like. The eight honorees included: Olive Bordon, Ronald Colman, Louise Fazenda, Preston Foster, Burt Lancaster, Edward Sedwick, Ernest Torrance, and Joanne Woodward.

The first star actually completed in its permanent location was director Stanley Kramer's, on March 28, 1960, on the easternmost end of the new Walk, near the intersection of Hollywood and Gower. The precise origin of the Joanne Woodward legend is not clear; but by at least one account, she was the first celebrity to agree to pose with her star for photographers, and therefore was singled out in popular lore as the first awardee.

The 1960s and 1970s were a period of protracted urban decay in the Hollywood area. The Walk was originally conceived, in part, to encourage redevelopment of Hollywood Blvd., but the area continued its steady decline over the course of the 1960s. While the Walk of Fame Selection Committee continued to exist, eight years passed without the addition of a single new star.
Radio personality, television producer, and Chamber member Johnny Grant is generally credited with implementing the changes that resuscitated the Walk and established it as a significant tourist attraction. In 1968 he initiated a revival of the selection process, then created and continually reinforced public awareness by staging a presentation ceremony to unveil each new star. He further stimulated publicity and encouraged international press coverage by requiring that each recipient personally appear at his or her star's public unveiling.
Grant also instituted a fee of USD $2,500 (which has increased incrementally over time to USD $25,000), payable by the person or entity nominating the recipient, to fund the Walk of Fame's upkeep and minimize further taxpayer burden. Initially, in the late '60s and early '70s, Grant later said, the neighborhood's reputation had declined so precipitously that persuading celebrities to make that commitment was a significant challenge.

From 1968 star ceremonies were held on a fairly regular basis. New stars have been added at the rate of twenty to twenty-five per year ever since.

In 1978, the Cultural Heritage Board of the City of Los Angeles designated the Hollywood Walk of Fame as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #194.

In 1984, a fifth category, “Live Theatre” was added to permit acknowledgement of contributions from the live performance branch of the entertainment industry, and a second row of stars was created on each sidewalk to alternate with the existing stars.
In 1994 the Walk of Fame was extended one block to the west on Hollywood Blvd., from Sycamore Avenue to North LaBrea Avenue (plus the short segment of Marshfield Way that connects Hollywood and La Brea), where it now ends.

Nomination process

Each year, an average of 200 nominations are submitted to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Walk of Fame Selection Committee. Anyone, including fans, can nominate anyone active in the field of entertainment, as long as the nominee or his or her management is in agreement with the nomination. (A letter of agreement from the nominated celebrity or representative must accompany the application.) Nominees must have a minimum of 5 years' experience in the category for which they are nominated. Posthumous nominees must be deceased at least 5 years. At a meeting each June, the committee selects approximately 20 celebrities to receive stars on the Walk of Fame during the following year. One posthumous award is given each year as well. The nominations of those not selected are "rolled over" to the following year for reconsideration; those not selected two years in a row are dropped, and must be renominated to receive further consideration. Living recipients must agree to personally attend a presentation ceremony within five years of selection. A relative of deceased recipients must attend posthumous presentations. Presentation ceremonies are open to the public.
A fee (currently USD $25,000), payable at time of selection, is collected to pay for the creation and installation of the star, as well as general maintenance of the Walk of Fame. The fee is usually paid by the nominating organization, which may be a fan club, or a film studio, record company, broadcaster, or other sponsor involved with the honoree's current or ongoing project.

The interesting facts

Gene Autry is the only honoree with stars in all five categories.

Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney, Roy Rogers, and Tony Martin each have stars in four categories.

Thirty people, including Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye, George Burns, Ed Wynn, and Jack Benny, have stars in three categories; only five of them are women: Dinah Shore, Gale Storm, Jane Froman, Marie Wilson, and Jo Stafford.

Since 1968, all living honorees have been required to be present for their star's unveiling, and approximately 40 have declined the honor due to this condition. The only recipient to date who has failed to appear after having agreed to do so was Barbra Streisand, in 1976. Her star was unveiled anyway, near the intersection of Hollywood and North Highland. Streisand did attend, however, when her husband, James Brolin, unveiled his star in 1998, two blocks to the east.

Six recording artists have two stars in the same category for distinct achievements: Michael Jackson, as a soloist and as a member of The Jackson Five; Diana Ross, as a member of The Supremes and for solo work; Smokey Robinson, first as a solo artist and later as a member of The Miracles; and John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison, as individuals and as members of The Beatles. Paul McCartney's nomination for an individual star, in 1993, lapsed because a personal appearance was never scheduled. He has since been renominated, and will receive his second star "when a date can be arranged for him to unveil it." Cher also forfeited her opportunity to join this exclusive club by declining to schedule the required personal appearance when she was selected in 1983, however, attend the unveiling of the Sonny & Cher star in 1998, as a tribute to her recently deceased ex-husband, Sonny Bono.

There are two pairs of stars bearing identical names but representing different people. Two Harrison Ford stars honor the silent film actor (at 6665 Hollywood Blvd), and the present-day actor (in front of the Kodak Theatre at 6801 Hollywood Blvd). There are also two Michael Jackson stars: one for the legendary singer/dancer/songwriter (at 6811 Hollywood Blvd), and the other for the radio personality (at 1597 Vine Street). When the singer/songwriter Jackson died, in 2009, fans mistakenly began leaving flowers, candles, and other tributes at the Vine Street star. Upon learning of this, the radio host Jackson wrote on his web site, "I am willingly loan[ing] it to him and, if it would bring him back, he can have it."

Charlie Chaplin is the only celebrity to be selected twice for the same star on the Walk. He was unanimously voted into the initial group of 500 in 1956, but the Selection Committee ultimately excluded him, ostensibly due to questions regarding his morals (he had been charged with violating the Mann Act - and exonerated - during the "White Slavery" hysteria of the 1940s) but more likely due to his left-leaning political views. The rebuke prompted an unsuccessful lawsuit by his son, Charles Chaplin, Jr. His star was finally added to the Walk in 1972, the same year he received his Academy Award; but even then, 16 years later, the Chamber of Commerce received angry letters from across the country protesting its decision to include him.

In 1978, in honor of his 50th anniversary, Mickey Mouse became the first animated character to receive a star. Other animated recipients are Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, Woody Woodpecker, Snow White, Winnie-the-Pooh, Shrek, Rugrats, and the Simpsons.

Four of the stars, which weigh about 300 pounds (136 kg) each, have been stolen from the Walk of Fame.

The largest group of individuals represented by a single star is the estimated 122 adults and 12 children[40] collectively known as the Munchkins, from the landmark 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.

Star on the Hollywood Blvd. - The Jacksons

September, 3

In recognition of their contribution to music, The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honour The Jacksons (including Jermaine) with a Star on Hollywood Boulevard’s “Walk Of Fame”.

Adress: 1500 Vine Street

More than 2000 adoring fans of the famous Jacksons--Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Michael and Randy--turned out to witness the talented brothers receive their star at the famed corner of Sunset and Vine in Hollywood.

The crush of screaming, shoving admirers was so great that bodyguards, in order to prevent injury, had to whisk the singers away before they could be photographed with the stars.

The "stars" bearing the names of show business celebrities are placed in the Hollwood Walk of Fame by the Hollwood Chamber of Commerce.

Following the ceremony, the Jackson clan gathered for a dinner party at Chasen's Restaurant.
In attendance were proud parents, Katherine and Joseph Jackson, and grandmother, Mrs. Crystale Jackson, Maureen Jackson-Brown with 2-year-old daughter Yashi, and sister LaToya and Janet Jackson.

Also on hand were Enid, Dee-Dee and Carole Jackson, the wives of Jackie, Tito and Marlon, respectively, as well as singer-composer Barry White and wife Glodean, television producer Dick Clark and wife, Carrie. Clark received a plaque from the Jacksons thanking him for his support of their careers.

"I believe we are powerful, but we don't use our minds to full capacity. Your mind is powerful enough to help you attain whatever you want. I knew what we could do with that record. We had a great team there, a lot of talent and good ideas, and I knew we could do anything. The success of Thriller transformed many of my dreams into reality. It did become the biggest-selling album of all time, and that fact appeared on the cover of The Guinness Book of World Records."
Michael Jackson, "Moonwalk"

Thriller is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Michael Jackson. It was released on November 30, 1982 by Epic Records as the follow-up to Jackson's critically and commercially successful 1979 album Off the Wall. Thriller explores similar genres to those of Off the Wall, including pop, R&B, rock and post-disco music.
In just over a year, Thriller became-and currently remains-the best-selling album of all time, with sales estimated by various sources as somewhere between 65 and 110 million copies worldwide, and is the best-selling album in the United States. Seven of the album's nine songs were released as singles, and all reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jackson reunited with Off the Wall producer Quincy Jones to record his sixth studio album. The pair worked together on 30 songs, nine of which were eventually included. Thriller was recorded between April and November 1982, with a production budget of $750,000. Several members of the band Toto were also involved in the album's recording and production. Jackson wrote four songs for the record: "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", "The Girl Is Mine", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean". Unlike many artists, Jackson did not write these songs on paper. Instead, he would dictate into a sound recorder; when recording he would sing from memory.

" Eventually we came under tremendous pressure from our record company to finish Thriller . When a record company rushes you, they really rush you, and they were rushing us hard on Thriller . They said it had to be ready on a certain date, do or die.
So we went through a period where we were breaking our backs to get the album done by their deadline. There were a lot of compromises made on the mixes of various tracks, and on whether certain tracks were even going to be on the record. We cut so many corners that we almost lost the whole album.
When we finally listened to the tracks we were going to hand in, Thriller sounded so crappy to me that tears came to my eyes. We had been under enormous pressure because while we were trying to finish Thriller we also had been working on The E.T. Storybook , and there had been deadline pressure on that as well. All these people were fighting back and forth with each other, and we came to realize that the sad truth was that the mixes of Thriller didn't work. We sat there in the studio, Westlake Studio in Hollywood, and listened to the whole album. I felt devastated. All this pent-up emotion came out. I got angry and left the room. I told my people, "That's it, we're not releasing it. Call CBS and tell them they are not getting this album. We are not releasing it."
Because I knew it was wrong. If we hadn't stopped the process and examined what we were doing, the record would have been terrible. It never would have been reviewed the way it was because, as we learned, you can ruin a great album in the mix. It's like taking a great movie and ruining it in the ending. You simply have to take your time. Some things can't be rushed.
There was a bit of yelling and screaming from the record people, but in the end they were smart and understood. They knew too; it was just that I was the first to say it. Finally I realized I had to do the whole thing - mix the entire album - all over again.
We took a couple of days off, drew a deep breath, and stepped back. Then we came to it fresh, cleaned our ears out, and began to mix two songs a week. When it was done - boom - it hit us hard. CBS could hear the difference too. Thriller was a tough project.
It felt so good when we finished. I was so excited I couldn't wait for it to come out. When we finished, there wasn't any kind of celebration that I can recall. We didn't go out to a disco or anything. We just rested. I prefer just being with people I really like anyway. That's my way of celebrating. "

Michael Jackson, "Moonwalk"

" Ever since I was a little boy, I would study composition. And it was Tchaikovsky that influenced me the most. If you take an album like Nutcracker Suite, every song is a killer, every one. So I said to myself, ‘Why can’t there be a pop album where every…’-people used to do an album where you’d get one good song, and the rest were like B-sides. They’d call them “album songs”- and I would say to myself, ‘Why can’t every one be like a hit song? Why can’t every song be so great that people would want to buy it if you could release it as a single?’ So I always tried to strive for that. That was my purpose for the next album. That was the whole idea. I wanted to just put any one out that we wanted. I worked hard for it."
From interview to magazine Ebony 2008

The album won Jackson a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards in 1984, including Album of the Year. The eighth Grammy went to Bruce Swedien. That same year, Jackson won eight American Music Awards, the Special Award of Merit and three MTV Video Music Awards. Thriller was recognized as the world's best-selling album on February 7, 1984, when it was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records. It is one of only three albums to remain in the top ten of the Billboard 200 for a full year, and spent 37 weeks at number one out of the 80 consecutive weeks it was in the top ten. The album was also the first of three to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top ten singles, and was the only album to be the best-seller of two years (1983-1984) in the US.

On August 21, 2009 Thriller was certified 29x Multi-Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, for shipments of at least 29 million copies in the US. The album topped the charts in many countries, sold 3.7 million copies in the UK, 2.5 million in Japan and went 15x Platinum in Australia. Still popular today, Thriller sells an estimated 130,000 copies in the US per year; it reached number two in the US Catalog charts in February 2003 and number 39 in the UK in March 2007. As of 2010, the album is estimated as having sold approximately 65-110 million copies worldwide.

Michael at ceremony wasn't present.

In December, 1983, Michael Jackson accepts 4 Black Gold Awards on occasion of the 1st Annual Black Gold Awards. On winning the Black Gold Award for Male Singer, he says: “Thank you. I’m very honored and I’m very happy to win this award, and I’d like to thank the public, as well as all the people who voted for me and, also, I’d like to thank the other nominees, because, when you think about it, we’re all winners. I love you all, thank you.”
On being honored with the ‘Single Record Of The Year’ award for ‘Billie Jean’, he says the following: “Thank you very much. I thank everyone again, who voted for me; I thank the public, as well as the disc-jokeys. Of all the songs on the ‘Thriller’ album, I think I’m more happy about ‘Billie Jean’ than any other, ‘cause there’s a lot of truth in the song. I love you all and thank you.”
For the ‘Best Video Performance’ award for ‘Beat It’, he states: “Boy, again, I must say, thank you so much. I’m very honored to get this award, I work very hard on my videos and I play a major role in bringing them about and making them magic and everything that I see in my dreams. And I thank you all. This is very wonderful. Thank you.”
His last Black Gold Award that night is for ‘Album Of The Year’ (which he produced), shared with producer Quincy Jones. “Thank you very much. It’s a – I’m very happy, I don’t know what to say…”, declares Jackson. “Doing [the] ‘Thriller’ album was very incredible, a wonderful experience working with Quincy Jones and working with so many wonderful musicians. I’d like to thank you all, I’m so honored and I’d like to say I love you and I have nothing more to say… [laughs mildly]”
