Finland has won the Wife Carrying World Championships held in the town of Sonkajärvi for the third consecutive year. Victory went to the Finnish couple of Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen.

The annual event attracted contestants this year from 15 countries including Finland, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Estonia and the USA.

Each male contestants must carry a woman with a minimum weight of 49 kilos, over a course of just over 250 metres. She must be at least 17 years of age. The winner is the couple who complete the course in the shortest time.

The Wife Carrying Championship event has been organized at Sonkajärvi since 1992. Prior to the recent three Finnish victories, Estonia held the title for 11 years.
