Only read some of the article, but I got the gist of it. It's a very sad situation.

BMG has an estimated 1.3 million items (tapes, acetates, metal parts); Sony, more than 600,000, according to sources.

Both have held onto the majority of their catalogue holdings because of their sheer bulk. Sony's main vault is now in a state-of-the-art Iron Mountain storage facility in upstate New York; BMG's is in a similar underground facility near Slippery Rock in Western Pennsylvania.

Both companies have given over sizable budgets to complete their computer-smart vault programs.

In addition to the size and age of their core inventory, the holdings in two companies' vaults have been fairly intact because no buyout deals over the decades have resulted in their vaults being moved around and haphazardly stored--thus more vulnerable to attrition--although they face the same problems as younger companies with their acquired labels. Buyouts and catalogue moves have become the achilles heel of all companies, but especially smaller companies.
thanks for the informative article. i have yet to go back to the rest of it, but at least this part is heartening. i also wonder if Michael played an active role in making sure everything of his' was preserved, and if he had copies, maybe not exactly of the masters which are still to revert to the Estate, but of everything else, the works-in-progress, etc. are artists allowed to do that?

found this on ebay, and it's selling for $50,000! this is relatively new, and is not likely a product of space-economizing. so if it's genuine, where could it have come from?

thanks for info. what i meant by 'new' is that it's a 1994 product, by which time Sony was likely to have already been spending huge amounts for storage and preservation. this couldn't have been merely thrown out to save space.

contact MJJC member Korgnex, a bird's whistle leads me to believe he may know some information about it, and possibly is the person selling it.

I don't think the article even relates to Michael's work. Michael had his footage and recordings stored and archived and in the Estate's statement, they said the high quality film masters to the July 16 are at the most, simply misplaced or put in a different area (that's how I read it). Nothing is lost and as they said, they had tapes of other shows, but being the audio on those shows weren't exactly how they wanted them to be and Wembley being their first choice, they went with the VHS tape and the high quality multitracks they have of the show

The Estate made no mention of film masters.
