The Michael Jackson Community (MJJCommunity or MJJC) would like to make the following announcement in honor of Michael and his humanitarian legacy.

MJJCommunity has been protecting, defending, preserving and honoring Michael and his legacy since 2001. MJJCommunity offers a wide variety of places to enjoy and celebrate Michael including a forum, news, Q & A’s, pictures, videography, memorabilia, awards and achievements, interviews, radio station, MJJCommunity blog, MJJC official merchandise, fan artwork and projects and charitable contributions. There have been many projects and initiatives inspired by Michael’s compassionate and humanitarian spirit within the community. MJJCommunity has sponsored fan events and also has taken a stand against the injustices and inhumane treatment of Michael in many instances for the last 12 years.

Through the efforts of the Legacy Project team and other community members, MJJCommunity has encouraged several fan-initiated projects that align with what Michael strongly believed in throughout his entire life. Michael was a strong advocate for many charities and causes. Michael’s compassion for these causes inspired him to develop and create real world solutions to the many issues which impacted him so deeply. Michael had and still continues to inspire many people all over the world to continue to send love out into our everyday lives as well as the world. He taught us that we are all connected on some level. Michael inspires many people to awaken to the issues which humanity faces, such as the mistreatment and abuse of the planet, animal rights and advocacy, disease, sick children, homelessness, unemployment, degraded education systems, lack of opportunity for underdeveloped communities and countries, war, poverty, natural and man-made disasters, oppression, apathy, selfishness, etc., the list goes on. Michael fought hard to help find ways to get people together to find solutions and make this world a better place.

Michael inspires MJJCommunity to continue the work that he started by announcing the official support of one of the charities that Michael worked with. MJJCommunity will officially be supporting Starlight Children’s Foundation. The initiatives will include fundraising through a fundraising page and will feature inspiring stories of children and their families who lives were positively impacted through the tireless work of Starlight Children’s Foundation. Additionally, there may be opportunities to participate in events that involve MJJCommunity members across the world. Both MJJCommunity and Starlight Children’s Foundation have a global presence, thus the exposure to this wonderful organization will extend out even further with the work that will be done.

We will use this forum to communicate on news, activities and initiatives related to the work that MJJCommunity does in support of this effort. Many more details are being worked out, so please stay tuned in this forum for more information about the initiatives and how you can get involved. Let’s Heal the World!

MJJCommunity and Legacy Project Team would like to highlight our first story from Starlight Children's Foundation. You can read many inspiring stories about how Starlight Children's Foundation brings hope and joy to the children and their families. These stories can be found in a section on the website called "Starlight Stories", http://www.starlight.org/stories. Here is our first story that is currently featured on the website.

Featured Story

Kylee%20Featured-2-light.jpg

Seven-year-old Kylee is one of those children you’d call a spitfire—that is, until her youthful energy suddenly sputters out.

It’s then that her pink "Hello Kitty" backpack comes to the rescue. A permanent fixture on her shoulders, it carries a packet of nutrient rich milk and high-protein formula that feeds Kylee through a tube inserted directly into her small intestine.

From the moment she was born, Kylee had severe health problems. She had digestive issues, seizures, developmental delays, a lazy eyelid covering half her pupil, and an inability to sweat or regulate her body temperature. At age 4, after enduring a dozen surgeries and countless painful and invasive diagnostic tests, she was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease III and IV. Life for Kylee’s family revolves around doctors’ visits, hospital stays and dealing with insurance companies. Kylee’s mom Kris and her 4 siblings all show signs of the disease in much lesser degrees.

Kris credits their extended Starlight family with making an immense difference in their lives.

"From our very first Starlight activity, we were made to feel both special and like an everyday family.” Kris and her husband greatly appreciate that Starlight’s programs include Kylee’s brother and sisters too. The constant focus on medical needs is rough on them, and sometimes they act out and get jealous of the extra attention Kylee receives.
Participating in Starlight programs is truly positive and meaningful for the whole family.

Even when Kylee seems weary in the face of yet another hospital visit or procedure, she rallies to be a part of Starlight activities. Kylee cut the ribbon on a new Starlight Fun Center® at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles when she happened to be hospitalized on the day of the dedication. This led to the exciting experience of meeting Jaime Lee Curtis, Sierra McCormick and other Starlight celebrity supporters, and playing video games on the new mobile entertainment unit.

In spite of her illness, Kylee embraces everything she does with wholehearted enthusiasm, seemingly for the pure joy of it. It’s as though she possesses an innate understanding that every day is precious and she knows how precarious life can be.

This is great news. I even have a Starlight Children's Foundation Australia flashing 'wand' on my desk here at work!

 Thank you Gaz, MJJC Staff, you the MJ Fan-mily and the entire LP Team, for this amazing initiative :clapping: I am so proud to be a member of this loving and supportive Michael Jackson Community :heart::group: Love you all MORE ...

WOW :clapping:

What a wonderful organisation!

I'm so proud MJJCommunity  is supporting this 'heartfelt' organisation to bring light and hope in these kids

I'm so proud of being in the MJJC, let's continue to honour Michael,
making justice and caring for our children, they are our future
and our future also starts with us!

Starlight Children's Foundation launches their new website.
Here is information on their new website that was included in an email announcement.

Dear Starlight Families and Supporters,

For 30 years Starlight has found innovative ways to support kids and families from hospital to home. This month Starlight launches an engaging new Starlight.org that beautifully highlights our mission, programs and families.

Starlight.org also houses the newest innovation in service of Starlight's mission: Starlight's Hospital Wish List platform. It is the world's first online giving marketplace that brings everyday philanthropists and corporations interested in making large scale donations together to support the needs of pediatric health care facilities.

I hope you enjoy reading more about the new Hospital Wish List program and all the enhanced features on Starlight.org.

Get to know the new starlight.org
On the new starlight.org you will find engaging photos of real Starlight kids and families, content about Our Work, clear ways to Get Involved, featured Events, and information about Starlight chapters, partners, board and staff that tells you all About Us.

Hospital Wish Lists
77.jpg
Starlight.org is more than a new website, it also houses a new technology platform that will revolutionize the way donors support hospitalized kids.

For the very first time, hospitals, clinics, houses and hospices can publish their Wish Lists on starlight.org - requesting items that transform the pediatric care experience for children. Donors can point, click, and ship those items directly to their facility of choice.

During the month of August Starlight will be working with approximately 1,500 pediatric facilities throughout the United States that currently benefit from Starlight's programs to engage them in building their Wish Lists on starlight.org.

Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach, and several others, have been first-adopters in Starlight's new Wish List program. See how the starlight.org online giving marketplace expands Starlight's ability to serve kids and families from hospital to home.

Camp Winaukee Supports Starlight
81.jpg
Today 215 incredible children ages 7-12 attending Camp Winaukee have volunteered to swim at least 2,000 laps to raise money for Starlight Children's Foundation!

Bart Sobel, the Camp Director, is himself an avid swimmer and for the past few years had an event for the boys at the camp to swim laps in the lake between two docks to raise money for Starlight.

So far, these dedicated boys have raised enough to place three Starlight Fun Centers in community hospitals.

Lindsay is a young woman who has exceeded all expectations.

From the beginning it was not easy for her. Suffering a stroke in the womb, Lindsay was born with cerebral palsy, which affects the motor skills in her left leg and arm. It also led to the total loss of eyesight in one eye, making her legally blind. Lindsay also has hydrocephalus, which is a fluid inside the skull that causes a swelling of the brain. She's had ten surgeries in her eighteen years and has at least one doctor appointment a week. The lack of motor skills on her left side led doctors to believe that she would have to be in a wheelchair but she has proved otherwise.

Starlight Stories

Hannah's Story

Hero_Hannah-128-sm.jpg

Twelve-year-old Hannah has always loved dance, but she is prone to concussions and skull fractures when she is physically active.

Her physical limitations couldn’t stop her from meeting one of her favorite television stars, Maddie Ziegler from the Lifetime show “Dance Moms,” and sharing her personal experience with a chronic illness.

Hannah stopped breathing when she was five days old. She suffered from frequent apnea, asthma, headaches, and acid reflux. She lived her life in and out of the hospital, undergoing countless tests . For the first two and a half years of Hannah’s life, her mom, Lori, was overwhelmed with fear for Hannah’s life. When all hope for an answer seemed lost, Hannah’s gestural doctor at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh suggested she have an MRI of her brain. This led to a Chiari malformation diagnosis.

Hannah’s brain tissue was protruding into the spinal canal which required the life-saving surgery to remove a piece of her skull and part of her top vertebrae to relieve pressure on her brain. Hannah continues to visit Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh once a year for an MRI.

“Starlight has been really helpful to my family,” says Lori, who has watched Hannah relax with a Starlight Fun Center and in a Starlight Site at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She and her family have also enjoyed several Starlight-sponsored outings with Hannah and her siblings. “When your child is sick, it is nice to know that people have donated money and items for your child to feel safe, secure, and that someone out there cares.”

Hannah credits her neurosurgeon, Dr. Ian Pollack, at Children’s Hospital Pittsburgh with saving her life. This year, she was deemed strong enough to enroll in her very first dance class and perform in the end-of-year recital, proving that her dance dreams can come true.

Michael's Story

MJphoto.jpg

Michael Jackson leads by example and shows the world that nothing should get in the way of happiness.

Born at 32 weeks gestation with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, Michael’s physical disability, was caused by a bleed in the brain affecting all four limbs in addition to speech and breathing issues.

But with a modified van, a power wheelchair, and a can-do attitude, Michael’s diagnosis does not define him! At 18, he is a college student, majoring in psychology. He enjoys kayaking, downhill skiing, archery, wheelchair soccer, hanging out with friends, and has a passion for water skiing.

In 2007 (at age 12), Michael was invited to speak at annual Starlight Children’s Foundation event. Since then, Michael has served as an unofficial “Ambassador of Laughter” with Starlight and is actively involved with Starbright World®, Starlight’s first-ever online social network for teens with chronic and life-threatening medical conditions, and their siblings.

While undergoing treatment at the Polinsky Rehabilitation Center in Duluth, Minnesota, USA, Michael felt that other children would enjoy the Starlight Fun Center® as much as he did - so he took action. In recognition of his community service, he became a NASCAR Foundation Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award finalist. His designated charity was Starlight and the money received in Michael’s honor was used to place five additional Fun Centers.

If you meet Michael, he invites you to: “Come say hi--get to know me--just like you would any other new friend. It shows you care and makes you a more understanding, open, and educated person. Not everyone lives the same life you do, so come learn about mine. I won’t even run over your feet with my power chair.”

Lyndsay's Story

lindsaystory.jpg

Lindsay is a young woman who has exceeded all expectations.

From the beginning it was not easy for her. Suffering a stroke in the womb, Lindsay was born with cerebral palsy, which affects the motor skills in her left leg and arm. It also led to the total loss of eyesight in one eye, making her legally blind. Lindsay also has hydrocephalus, which is a fluid inside the skull that causes a swelling of the brain. She’s had ten surgeries in her eighteen years and has at least one doctor appointment a week. The lack of motor skills on her left side led doctors to believe that she would have to be in a wheelchair but she has proved otherwise.

Lindsay recently graduated from high school with a 3.75 grade point average. She was one of the school’s homecoming princesses, believing that it set an example against stereotypes. Learning braille after her sophomore year, Lindsay worked hard to keep up with the other students. She sung in the Braille Institute’s Johnny Mercer Children’s Choir and also attended the Junior Blind of America camp where she aimed to learn how to excel in higher education.

Lindsay received a Hydrocephalus Association Scholarship and will be attending college in Fall 2013. She wants to teach the visually impaired through the school district, believing that since she can relate to these students, she can help them succeed and do for them what her teachers did for her.

Lindsay is an active member of Starbright World®, Starlight’s online social network for teens with chronic and life-threatening medical conditions, and their siblings. She heard about Starbright World after watching a promotional video for the site on YouTube. Lindsay now recruits other chronically ill teens to join the online community knowing it will make a difference for them, “especially in their darkest hours.” Watch her Starbright World video, now on Starlight’s You Tube channel.

Andrew's Story

Andrew.png

When Andrew was born he was pink and perfect. He was the first child born to proud parents Andy and Cyn. But by age two it became clear that all was not right.

After suffering infection after infection, multiple hospitalizations, and a platelet transfusion, doctors first thought Andrew had Leukemia. Another week of testing led to the diagnosis of X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia or XLA.

As a Primary Immune Deficiency Disease, little Andrew’s body lacked the ability to make B-cells, which meant his body was unable to make antibodies.

Andrew is now a teenager. He looks healthy on the outside, but his body is vulnerable and he has to be very careful to avoid getting sick.

Andrew’s illness has impacted the entire family. All activities including family outings, school, camp, and work are scheduled around his infusions. Andrew’s dad has to make career decisions based on health benefits. At times, Andrew’s sister has to take a backseat. As Cyn explains, “Andrew gets a lot of attention. As hard as we try to make things even, it never is.”

Cyn discovered Starlight while researching ways to help Andrew and the rest of the family better understand XLA. Starlight Escapes lift their spirits and provide an opportunity for the family to make happy memories outside of the hospital. Cyn jokes that everyone in the family appreciates that Andrew’s illness has been their ticket to more fun and adventure through Starlight! They spend quality time exploring local attractions, going to the movies, and hanging out together.

Cyn says, “We try to have an appreciation for what we have and that we are lucky. We can't sweat the small stuff.”

We know Michael was deeply effected by the needs of these children and their families. Starlight Children’s Foundation was a charity close to Michael's heart that he supported.

He would be so proud his fans are taking the initiative to help those in need, especially the children he loved so much as that has always been his mission. By helping these children through MJJC's fundraising page, you will also be honoring Michael by keeping his charitable legacy alive.

Be assured 100% of your donation goes directly to Starlight Children’s Foundation . Every dollar counts, no donation is too small. Just give from your heart and together we can really make a difference in these childrens lives and in this world.

Anything you can do to help support this great cause in honor of Michael Jackson is appreciated. You can also help us raise funds by donating your time to share our fundraising page with your family and friends on your social networks. ( via Facebook, twitter, blogs, fan boards etc.etc )

We ask What More Can We Give?
The answer is everyone gives a little bit
and together we will create a world of Love
