Michael Jackson's classic short film BAD just got 100 million views on VEVO/youtube and became MJ's 5th VEVO certified video, after Thriller, They Don't Care About Us, Billie Jean & Beat It.

Soon another Michael's classic short film will become certified. The Way You Make Me Feel currently has 99.595.483 views. Next one should be Love Never Felt So Good with 89.179.891 and another classic, Remember The Time with 91.904.810 views.

^^It's over 99,599 now. I'm watching it, but don't know if I add to the count since it's already in my "likes". But hooray!!!!

Curious if and when the high def scans come, they will replace the uploads.. can they keep the viewer count?

The Way You Make Me Feel now 99.608.141! I think by tomorrow it will be 1 MIL and MJ's 6th VEVO certified video!

What does it mean those VEVO certifications success wise? I mean, I'm glad MJ classics have lots of views even though many of them came out when MTV was the way to watch music videos but at the same time I think about a bunch of craps like Nicki Minaj's and Katy Perry's videos having almost 1 billion views if all those playings mean something.

they have lots of views because they are current artists in a digital age...

It's only natural that current hits have a lot more views than old songs. That was always the case and always will be.

But when I compare MJ's views to other artists of his generation he is doing very well. I'm mainly on Spotify and he is doing very well there as well. Yes, there are some current artist who have songs with more spins or who have more followers but that is only natural.

A couple of weeks ago I made a little statistics from Spotify, so you can see how MJ compares to others:

MJ's account is followed by 1,619,378 people (actually, it was a couple of weeks ago and now it's 1,687,831).

His most played song is Billie Jean with 74,481,116 spins.

Other artists (first number is the number of their followers, second is the number of spins for their most popular song):

Madonna 788,476 (Top song: Like A Prayer 16,165,911 spins)
Elvis Presley 707,445 (Top song: Suspicious Minds 22,440,707)
The Beatles 555,944 (Top song: Ain't She Sweet 2,722,709 - note: this is not so representative as only few Beatles songs are on Spotify)
Prince 259,061 (Top song: When Doves Cry 9,759,272)
Janet Jackson 117,634 (Top song: That's The Way Love Goes 6,519,163)
Queen 1,444,119 (Top song: Bohemian Rhapsody 61,970,266)
Freddie Mercury 30,420 (Top song: Living On My Own 2,700,339)
Bob Marley 1,132,970 (Top song: Three Little Birds 32,476,728)
Stevie Wonder 464,627 (Top song: Superstition 32,849,144)
David Bowie 688,549 (Top song: Under Pressure 17,864,566)
Mariah Carey 580,934 (Top song: All I Want For Christmas Is You 60,762,424)
Whitney Houston 475,667 (Top song: I Will Always Love You 33,235,505)
Marvin Gaye 325,517 (Top song: Ain't No Mountaing High Enough 30,625,796)
George Michael 176,400 (Top song: Careless Whisper 16,609,638)
Bon Jovi 579,570 (Top song: Livin' On A Prayer 44,570,295)
Guns N' Roses 837,562 (Top song: Sweet Child O' Mine 43,380,720)
Metallica 985,561 (Top song: Enter Sandman 29,739,216)
Led Zeppelin 633,490 (Top song: Stariway To Heaven 14,526,736)
Pink Floyd 730,751 (Top song: Wish You Were Here 22,503,421)
Nirvana 1,108,196 (Top song: Smells Like Teen Spirit 74,501,773)
Bruce Springsteen 773,759 (Top song: Dancing in the Dark 24,735,093)
John Lennon 126,921 (Top song: Happy Xmas (War Is Over) 11,342,341)
Genesis 168,776 (Top Song: Invisible Touch 8,464,831)
U2 864,229 (Top song: With or Without You 52,264,130)
Bryan Adams 294,974 (Top song: Summer of '69 29,126,693)
Elton John 469,113 (Top song: Your song 34,125,365)
Radiohead 948,268 (Top song: Creep 51,187,551)
Sting 299,870 (Top song: Fields of Gold 24,803,554)

Eagles 152,435 (Top song: Hotel California 21,275,073)
Bob Dylan 632,540 (Top song: Like a Rolling Stone 23,579,901)
Aretha Franklin 239,579 (Top song: Respect 25,789,321)

Additionally:

Jackson 5 134,364 (Top song: I Want You Back 29,621,750)
Jacksons 30,420 (Top song: Blame It on the Boogie 15,240,796)

Current top artists and their number of followers:

Bruno Mars 2,765,495
Taylor Swift 2,453,431
Beyoncé 2,405,218
Adele 2,394,979
Justin Bieber 2,333,017
Usher 2,149,985
Justin Timberlake 1,310,325
Lady Gaga 1,252,119
Sam Smith 893,494

Typically a current top hit can have 150-250 million spins. But again, that is natural - that is why they current hits. Obviously this does not mean that these songs will stand the test of time like Billie Jean did.

It means that MJ videos, even though they were release 20-30 years ago, are still very well received and appreciated. VEVO Certified is an award. It is not significant award and it is modern day award, but it is still an award. And it is nice to see that MJ's work still receives recognition and that he's still being awarded for his work.

Like respect said, you have to put all that into perspective, MJ is not here anymore and all those songs are old songs (except LNFSG). Also MJ is only artist from older generations on that list! So having 6 VEVO Certified videos and competing with modern day artists and starlets is a great feat and definitely something that should be applauded. Go MJ!

Well that's unfortunate.. restored 'Beat It' has more views than the unedited if i recall correctly

Yeah. When Vevo was implemented in October 2009, all official music videos were deleted and re-uploaded under new Vevo accounts. Being 3-4 months after his death, the massive boost in views attained from Michael's death were all lost unfortunately and do not count towards his current Vevo videos.

We'd probably have a few more Vevo Certified videos if they were included, but regardless, what MJ has anyway is an excellent achievement :)

And there is also the problem of not official uploads which do not count. Eg. this TDCAU has more than 52 million views, but since it's not on VEVO I don't think it counts, or does it? Not that it matters since TDCAU on VEVO is over 100 million views anyway.

Yes Yes this! I could have swore that thriller was close to the billion mark way back in 08 then all of a sudden the views disappeared.

Not true. Thriller had around 70-80 MIL back then. It was one of the most watched videos on entire youtube and most watched music video.

Love this version more than Brazil.. i do enjoy that one also but this particular one fits the dimension of the track much more!

It does not count. And in my opinion is stupid that Sony did not remove these unofficial uploads. It did make sense back then when there was no official version on youtube for some unknown reason (like Who Is It, Ghosts), but now when there is official prison version on MJ account I think they should delete unofficial upload, even though it has over 52 MIL views, because the official one has only 2,3 MIL and those views count.

So Michael has more followers in Spotify than current artists like Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and Sam Smith- Wow- Go Michael go!:punk:

It's a bit pointless when all the views were deleted.

It'd be more interesting to collate views across all of youtube of music videos. Including when they were deleted. Big undertaking I suppose but would be far more interesting to me.

MJ is unique amongst the likes of Katy Perry. Few will be watching her videos in 100 years on whatever platform exists then. People will still be watching Thriller.

http://mashable.com/2009/08/26/thriller/ shame it got deleted, as did the unofficial upload of Smooth Criminal (Blu-ray), that got over 50m views - I think.
Seriously? That sucks....

Just looked it up and you're right. On the plus side, this live performance has over 60,000,000 views :O

Meh, I'd rather have an unofficial video that has literally tens and tens of millions of views than stick to official videos with a few mere millions, just in hope of getting it 'Vevo Certified' in the far off future.

Why is it that Thriller is the only short film recognized as "VEVOCertified" of the 5 MJ short films that have surpassed 100 million views?

How big of an undertaking. It would just take some computer programs, I think-hackers do more intricate stuff than that every day.
When did Vevo start? I know YouTube originated in 2005.

Who is Sam smith?

omg gurl, allow me to lift the rock you've been living under. :D
He's kind of awesome. Such an amazing voice. Someone already posted his big hit STAY WITH ME, but also check out his dancy track with Disclosure (which was also a huge hit) "Latch".

Ok, sorry to derail thread. Had to get that out.

Also, in regards to video tracking, it is weird because some artists/songs are uploaded by random people (not official uploads), so those get a huge chunk of hits as well. So it's not a reliable way of tracking.

But this is the way things are now. Nobody watches MTV or listens to the radio (let alone calls in to request a song). So streaming services and video views need to factor in to get an idea of what people are into (in regards to top 40/pop stuff).
