I know this might seem like an odd and somewhat far-fetched point, but if you deep a little deeper and thing about the countless number of today's superstar musicians, entertainers, singers/songwriters and producers that have dominated the charts and the music industry for the decade and half (his influence is all over top 40 radio), that not just cite MJ as their primary influence but are actively trying to recapture his sound and style in their music and performance, is it really that far-fetched or a serious assessment?
Their are other more obvious names like Kanye West or Beyonce, Kanye because he effectively ended raps gangster persona and encouraged rappers to embrace their quirky fashion sense and to get in touch with their emotions (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/808s_%26_Heartbreak).
