The musician’s death was firstly announced by his official facebook page: “It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away.”

Leonard Cohen’s first album “Songs Of Leonard Cohen’ came out in 1967.

In 2008, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Cohen’s brought out his final studio album ‘You Want It Darker’ just three weeks before his death.

RIP. Read an interesting article about him that said Hallelujah was not a hit when he wrote it in 1984 and was overlooked for the Grammys in 85. Instead the Song of the Year went to We are the World, "which is not Hallelujah's equal in songwriting."
I say WATW still holds up-everybody knows it. But Hallelujah should have been nominated. Instead it was a sleeper hit and didn't even become popular for another 10 years. It's a beautiful song.

It is perhaps ironic that CBS chief executive Walter Yetnikoff was not satisfied at all with the final track listing of Cohen’s studio album ‘Various Positions’ (the album that included ‘Hallelujah’ & ‘Dance Me To The End Of Love’, among others).

Yetnikoff was adamant (about not releasing that album) & he appeared to have said at that time: “…We’re not releasing it [‘Various Positions’]. This is a disaster…”. As a result, Yetnikoff never gave the green light for that release, & that album was subsequently released by an independent label called Passport Records.

I find it a bit strange too that Cohen’s original ‘Hallelujah’ never became broadly known in the following ten years from its release. It only gained mass popularity through Jeff Buckley’s cover that was included on his ‘Grace’ album in 1995. But even in Buckley’s case, that cover became widely known after another ten years when it was released in 2007 as a posthumous single (from that album)!
