Default Song of the Week - Walk Right Now

Walk Right Now was released as the fourth and final single from Triumph. It was released on June 15th 1981 and was a top ten hit in the UK, peaking at number 7. It didn't fair so well in the US, only managing number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song was written by Michael, with his brothers Jackie and Randy.

Great song, my favourite off Triumph. The British had a lot of taste.

For me, this is one of The Jackson's best songs. I feel like Triumph really marked the beginning of MJs dramatic storytelling songs that would later become standard fare on MJ albums, with songs like Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Dangerous and BOTD.

Walk Right Now is also significant in being the first MJ song to really explore the whole femme fatale theme, which would go on to become a recurring subject matter in his songwriting.

The arrangement and instrumentation on this song is super tight and funky, brilliant use of sound effects and a real urgency underpins the track, topped with a typically exhilarating vocal performance from Mike. Why this wasn't a staple on the first leg of the Bad tour, in place of the inferior Lovely One, I will never understand.

I love this song so much! I think I heard the instrumental before I heard the actual song and from the very first beat, all it made me me wanna do is get up and dance! When a song makes me wanna do nothing but dance, then I know it's a great song

I am glad you made this Song of the Week. I rarely hear fans talk about this song and it is such a great song, I love it very much. One of the best on the Triumph album.

Walk Right Now is just irresistible. This and Time Waits for No One are tops on Triumph.

One of my absolute favourites from The Jacksons, and definitely in my top 3 on Triumph. It's so funky and the vocals are top draw.

It's hard to think MJ wasn't satisfied with the song (Moonwalk)

OMG, I love this song. I have always loved MJ's songs on the whole femme fatale theme and this one is one of the best. A shame this song was never performed live as it's easily one of the Jacksons best songs.

That's because in the US, The Jacksons were considered a R&B group, so did not get much Top 40 pop airplay. Walk Right Now was too funky sounding for pop radio in 1981. This was not that long after the disco demolition riot, and many Top 40 stations started playing less R&B. Radio here has always been segregated for the most part and R&B acts had to crossover to get pop (aka mainstream) airplay, and very few did. Some got 1 or maybe 2 songs that became pop hits, but they didn't "crossover" themselves like a Lionel Richie did. This was the period when soft rock like Air Supply & Christopher Cross was popular. After Urban Cowboy became a blockbuster movie, country music started to get more pop airplay too. Kenny Rogers was maybe the biggest crossover country act at the time. Kenny was so popular, they made a movie based on his song The Gambler. I find it interesting that John Travolta was part of 3 of the biggest crazes in the USA of those years, Happy Days/Sha Na Na style 1950s nostalgia (Grease), disco (Saturday Night Fever), and country (Urban Cowboy). I've seen people online ask why The Girl Is Mine was the first single released from Thriller, it's because that was the sound that could fit in with the other songs on Top 40. It was more likely to get automatic Top 40 airplay than a song like PYT or Billie Jean. The Girl Is Mine also fit the adult contemporary format and AC acts tend to be a big seller in America. Paul McCartney was still popular then too, so that also helped with pop radio airplay.

Wasn't it performed on the Triumph tour or am I making that up?

This is why "Song of the Week" threads are so great... - I didn't really knew this song...

I will listen to it ASAP. The Jacksons (and J5) are not what I hear the most I must admit, but there truely are some great gems.

I agree with all of you, it is just so danceable and it has the hook, the chant and the whole feel is so funky and upbeat. Not only a floor filler but superbly written song written for the stage, the dancefloor and the stereo. Plus don't you love how Michael is giving the "femme fatale" the boot and basically showing the door and telling her not to look back. Cool squared!

I obviously knew Can You Feel It because of the Moonwalker kaleidoscope but oddly enough I listened to Walk Right Now fully on the radio first. It's one of my favorites from the album as well, I love it. If it was never performed live, what a shame indeed.

Matty, you made look for that photo shoot, Michael looks so handsome there.

    When he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.” -William Shakespeare
