Default SONG OF THE WEEK - Remember The Time

Remember The Time was released on January 14th 1992 as the second single from Dangerous.

Recorded in March 1991, it peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and similarly number 3 on the UK top 40 singles chart. Internationally it was also a top 20 hit in most major markets, peaking at number 1 in New Zealand and Belgium and reaching the top 5 in Spain, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Ireland and Canada.

The song was received well by most music critics upon the release of Dangerous. The Washington Post described Remember the Time as being "wistful" commenting that he felt that the song featured Michael's "least affected vocal performance" but that it "builds an engaging, radio-friendly momentum".

    The only live vocal performance:

    My favourite song on Dangerous!

I always wondered why this was taken off the setlist of the Dangerous tour. Would've been a real highlight of the show if they'd kept it in.

    Okay, here we go.

Best single cover EVER! Many refer to it as a shot from ITC due to the hair & white T shirt, but actually it's a crew neck T shirt as opposed to the V neck from ITC.

I have a very distinct memory of buying the CD single from HMV Leeds and recall the excitement when it had Come Together as the B side. This was fantastic for me as previously there was no way of owning that recording.

The the maxi single came out with the remixes and the C&C Music factory remixes of Black or White.

The Short film, like BoW, got a full length premiere on Top Of The Pops and I was astounded by the different chorography & MJ's new hairstyle.

As to the song itself, have to say not one of my favourites on Dangerous. An obvious choice for a single as it's so radio friendly, but I always prefered Dangerous's darker side. As always, MJ's vocal takes it to another dimension and like on YANA when we get to the last third of the song when it's Michael ad-libbing over a repeated chorus, it takes it higher. I loved on the short film when they separated the ad-libs during the breakdown.

For such a strong second single it it strange it wasn't on the tour. But I think maybe he wasn't that confident with the choreography.

File this one under 'Classic MJ' but for me, like with most of his classics, in the lower half of my MJ chart.

‘Remember The Time’ is definitely my least favorite new jack swing track (from the ‘Dangerous’ album). I even find ‘She Drives Me Wild’ as being by far a better song.

But the radio-friendliness of ‘Remember The Time’ cannot be denied, which of course worked to the album’s commercial advantage.

Also, I think that the largest part of that song’s success is because of its accompanying video clip.

To the best of my knowledge, MJ did not perform that song during the Dangerous Tour because of technical factors (mostly due to the elaborate stage dancers’ costumes which would have demanded a lot of on stage, precious time).

It is really a pity because that came to the detriment of the ‘Dangerous’ album, which eventually was left with only four songs being performed during that tour. It also strikes me as a bit ironic because the Dangerous Tour was supposed to support that album a little more.

I've heard that, I don't believe it. If you can do Smooth Criminal, Thriller and even the costumes for WYBT were harder. You can do a tour version of the costumes.

Also, I'm skeptical of the Soul Train performance also but that's derailing I guess.

That would've been cool! To get an actual unreleased song instead of one that was also on Dangerous.

I heard discussions that the mix on that CD single for Come Together was different than the one that ended up on HIStory. Is that true and if so by how much?

The mix of the CD Single version (UK) of ‘Come Together’ is different (& longer) than the mix version that it ended up on the ‘HIStory’ album.

Notice, for example, the ending of the CD Single version (UK):

Basically it's the full Moonwalker version. 5 mins 38 I think...

I like it and I think it is a great radio single, but like others said above there are songs on Dangerous that are maybe less radio-friendly but are better. But it is a good song and I agree with Tony the ad-libs at the end take it to another level.

The video is one of MJ's best - but then he had many, many highs when it came to music videos. The choreography is a bit different for him, adopting hip-hop dancing, but he proves he masters that too and the result was yet another iconic and memorable choreography that is emulated until today.

    I LOVE RTT!
I also love how Michael absolutely slayed choreo that was a out of the norm for him (with the tutting and what not).
Michael could have mastered any type of dance if he wanted to.

I love RTT. I love the video, I think the dance break is up there with one of my favourite moments in a short film, the choreography is something else. The whole song has a different vibe to anything else he's done as well. It's a perfect example of the short film adding so much more to the song and a whole new perspective, it really is great. Such a shame it wasn't included in the set list of any any concerts, it would definitely have been a highlight for me seeing him do that choreography live.
