DETROIT -- Joining the likes of Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder, pop icon Michael Jackson will soon have a Detroit street named after him.

In announcement made Thursday afternoon, city officials revealed that a portion of Randolph Street will be renamed Michael Jackson Avenue as part of the Detroit Music Weekend next month.

The four-day festival will also feature a performance by the four living Jackson brothers -- Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Jermaine -- on June 16. Other announced acts for the festival include Grand Funk Railroad's Mark Farner, Chelsea native Jeff Daniels, Craig Brown and Will Sessions.

The Jackson Five have a deep history with the city having been signed to Motown in 1968 and recording the groups biggest hits during their seven-year stint with the label.

Marlon and Jackie Jackson were both on hand for the announcement of the street this morning.

The Michael Jackson announcement is just the latest in a series of streets in the city being named after music icons with ties to the area. Along with Franklin and Wonder, Eagles lead singer Glen Frey has also been honored with a street being named after him.

Randolph between Gratiot and Madison in downtown Detroit will be renamed “Michael Jackson Avenue” as part of Detroit Music Weekend, city officials and organizers of Detroit Music Weekend, June 14-17, announced Thursday at a news conference. The weekend event, June 14-17, will include 500 acts and a shopping day Saturday featuring Detroit merchandise and some 100 restaurants.

The naming of the street might have hit a roadblock, though. After the event, Marlon Jackson told The Detroit News that the street will be named after the Jackson 5. “We’ll work that out,” he said, as brother Jackie nodded.

The Jacksons, who signed a contract with Motown in 1968, will be honored with a key to the city and a tribute concert June 14. They will perform as The Jacksons on June 15 at the festival.

Marlon and Jackie Jackson spoke at the event, which touted Detroit's "Entertainment District," the cluster of downtown venues that includes three major sports stadiums, four sports teams, and several theaters, all within blocks.

“We spent most of 1969 here in Detroit, staying at Bobby Taylor’s apartment, and rehearsing,” said Jackie Jackson, laughing. “We signed to Motown in 1968, but nobody believed us. They said, when is your record coming out?”

“We recorded all these songs ... but then our first four records went to No. 1.”

“This is Detroit — you have Big Sean, Eminem, Aretha... it should have a music festival,” Jackie Jackson added.

In March, Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts announced that the free, outdoor event would return for a second year June 14-17 with headlining acts the Jacksons, Michigan-raised actor Jeff Daniels and Mark Farner of Flint’s Grand Funk Railroad.

“The purpose of Detroit Music Weekend is to articulate the impact our creativity has on our economy,” said Vince Paul, founding director of the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts.

At last year's Detroit Music Weekend, the city honored Aretha Franklin with a street named in her honor and the key to the city of Detroit. This year, The Jacksons and the Jackson family will receive the key to the city at 8 p.m. June 15.

The city is working on officially designating the Entertainment District to highlight downtown's theaters and other entertainment venues.

Nearly half a century after Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 ignited their career with a successful Motown audition, the City of Detroit will officially commemorate the group's local history.

A stretch of Randolph Street in the city's theater district will be renamed Michael Jackson Avenue, announced Stephen Brady, chief of staff for Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones. A ceremony will be held on the site June 15 as part of the Detroit Music Weekend festival.

The surviving Jacksons, who will headline the fest, will also be bestowed a key to the city by Mayor Mike Duggan, said Alexis Wiley, the mayor's chief of staff.

The Indiana group was signed to Motown in 1968, recording at the company's West Grand Boulevard studios before migrating to Los Angeles as Berry Gordy Jr. steadily moved operations there. The Jackson 5 was with Motown through 1975 — racking up hits such as "I Want You Back," "ABC" and "I'll Be There" — and was renamed the Jacksons when the group signed with Epic Records.

The street renaming was announced Thursday morning at a media event for Detroit Music Weekend, a festival to be headlined June 16 by the surviving Jacksons — Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon.

Jackie Jackson and Marlon Jackson were on hand for Thursday's press event at Music Hall.

The free festival, spearheaded by Music Hall, will run June 14-17.

Detroit Music Weekend debuted last summer with a headlining performance by Aretha Franklin, in what may have been her final hometown show. In a tearful, emotional event that week, the Queen of Soul was honored with her own street — a stretch of Madison unveiled as Aretha Franklin Way.

Michael Jackson Ave. !!! I dig it... awesome

Great. - He should have more streets named after him.

That's a nice gesture, I like it! More and more cities should follow this idea and have streets named after the King:cool:

That's a cool gesture and a sign of respect. But is it only renamed for a few days, as long as that festival lasts?

There is also the Michael Jackson Alley in Bucharest

Michael Jackson street naming scrapped

An honorary street naming in Detroit for the King of Pop was canceled Wednesday.

Michael Jackson Avenue was supposed to be officially unveiled Friday in Motor City, just as the late artist's surviving brothers prepared to perform at a weekend concert.

But the ceremony was called off, as members of the Jackson 5 -- the family act where Michael Jackson got his start -- wondered why the entire group wasn't being honored.

Under city rules, honorary street names cannot be granted to groups or organizations, only persons, the Detroit Free Press newspaper reported.

A city official told the newspaper that the naming ceremony was called off while a solution is sought.

"We're still working through the process," Stephen Grady told the Free Press.

The street naming was announced in mid-May with much fanfare and two of the Jackson 5 present at a news conference.

The tribute was to come 50 years after the family group birthed their career with a successful recording contract audition in Detroit, which has a rich history of nurturing American artists.

But Marlon and Jackie Jackson told reporters at the May event that they wanted the entire group to be honored.

Michael Jackson, who started with the group, went on to become one of the most famous performers in pop music history.

He died in 2009 at the age of 50 from a fatal dose of drugs, including the powerful anesthetic propofol.

Had the street naming gone ahead, the King of Pop's honorary stretch of road would have been near the one named after the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. Her street naming was last year.

That's a bloody outrage! They get to rename the bridge after Gordie Howe and now they're backing off naming their street after Michael!? Well that tears it!

Michael Jackson's brothers are SO... PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!! :gross:

Certainly sounds like it.

A tribute to the Jacksons would be a nice touch - and the mayor has already said it will happen from what I gather - but the Jacksons need to accept that MJ was the biggest star in their group and that even today they must think him for their own revival. They wouldn't have been able to tour these last 10 years without MJ's death.

They need to let MJ receive his honours with dignity and appreciation. They need to stop stomping their feet to get a piece of the pie.

What a "nice" move from Michaels brother. They are so jaleous.

Just goes to show you what kind of family Michael has. All they had to do was STHU and allow their BROTHER to receive the honor. However, they are so jealous, they couldn’t even do that. Sad and pathetic!!!::mat:

Why do those jealous, petty, ungrateful and backstabbing Jackson brothers have any say in that?

They were supposed to be the big headliners in the Detroit Music Festival this weekend and I have no doubt that the promoter that got them there promised them not only a key to the city, but a street named for the group. I guess they were a little blindsided that it was not the case.

However, I think they should have sucked it up and gone with the Michael Jackson Avenue-after all, they have ALL accepted posthumous awards given to Michael during the last nine years. I wouldn't have been surprised had it been Jermaine making a squawk. But I'm very surprised at Jackie and Marlon at the press conference. This just makes them look bad.

Anybody know if they are still going to perform?

45 min shake your body??? Are they really doing that? Cuz the whole reason why a long shake your body was cool was cuz of Mike's dancing and adlibs

I've seen the Jackson 4 perform live and Jermaine thinks he's the second coming of MJ, judging by his body language and his clothes.
They didn't do a 45-minute Shake Your Body in the concert I saw......but seriously....NO ONE asked for that!!! No one.

Now I'm scared. Have my tickets for one of The Jacksons concerts in Europe, not sure if I'll enjoy it or not after reading this :/

The Jacksons get keys to the city ahead of Detroit fest performance

They hailed from Gary, Ind., on the outskirts of Chicago. But the Jacksons got the welcome of returning heroes in Detroit on Friday night.

Ahead of their free Saturday performance at the Detroit Music Weekend festival, the surviving members of the onetime Motown Records group joined more than 200 guests for a splashy suit-and-tie event in a party tent outside Music Hall.

Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon Jackson — grinning and upbeat for the occasion — were presented ceremonial keys to the city by Detroit Police Chief James Craig, part of a festival preview gala that included a fashion show and a tribute to Jackson music by local singers.

The Detroit Music Weekend celebration, produced by Music Hall, comes nearly 50 years to the month after the Jackson 5's Motown records audition, just around the corner from Friday's gala. The resulting record deal turned the group into global stars and set the stage for the stratospheric solo career of late brother Michael Jackson.

“Come back to Detroit is like coming home,” said Jermaine Jackson. “I feel like this is the mega music center of the world.”

Police chief Craig led the presentation of five keys to the city — each encased in a frame with a gold-hued Detroit skyline — including one posthumously tailored for Michael Jackson.

Craig jokingly advised that the keys wouldn’t get them out of traffic citations.

Jermaine Jackson leaned in: “Do they open the banks?”

The group merits a place in Detroit’s music legacy, said Craig, telling the four: “You are Motown. You are Detroit. You are always part of our family.”

Following a fashion runway show presented by Saks Fifth Avenue — staged to the Detroit music of Eminem, Aretha Franklin and Madonna — the four Jacksons watched on intently as local singers and dancers paid tribute to their family’s music. Accompaniment came from a band of top-shelf Detroit players, including keyboardist Valdez Brantley, whose brother Kern (in China this weekend) was the show’s creative director.

After an energetic opening from 10-year-old Jason Kolbusz — singing the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and “I’ll Be There” — the set shifted into a survey of music from across the whole family catalog.

Vocal trio Love I Am melded La Toya Jackson’s “If You Feel the Funk,” Rebbie Jackson’s “Centipede” and Janet Jackson’s “All For You.” First-class Detroit singer Herschel Boone gave a soulful reading of Jermaine Jackson’s “Let’s Get Serious” (with sax from Dave McMurray, unfortunately marred by audio issues) and Anesha Birchett offered a smoky rendering of Janet Jackson’s “Come Back to Me.”

There was a big emphasis on Michael Jackson solo material, including Beth Griffith’s “She’s Out of My Life,” singer C3’s deft “Rock With You” and Elijah Johnson’s smooth “Human Nature.” Five years after debuting on Broadway as a young Michael in “Motown: The Musical,” Detroiter Jebreel Mawry took the stage for “Billie Jean” — white glove, sequins, spins and all — before Alise King delivered a wailing “Beat It.”

The selections made for a lively show, but there was plenty of Jackson 5 hit material left untapped — an odd choice, given the whole point of the evening. Five of the male singers returned late in the show to perform a medley of the group’s “Can You Feel It,” “Lovely One” and “Shake Your Body,” bringing the onlooking Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon to their feet in appreciation.

Greg Phillinganes — the well-traveled, Detroit-born keyboardist — took the stage late in the show, recounting his early love of the Jackson 5 and enthusing: “To be back here in my hometown celebrating with them is pure, unspeakable joy.”

The night’s entire crew of singers then filed back out as the band launched into “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” — with Phillinganes manning a keyboard to rekindle the parts he played on Michael Jackson's 1979 hit record.

The Jacksons will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday on Detroit Music Weekend’s main stage, at the corner of Madison and Grand River. The event is free. The full schedule of performances on five stages is at detroitmusicweekend.org.

Instead of badgering mj for years to either tour with them or allow them to go onstage with him at his shows they should have gone around as the J4 and made themselves some money that way to begin with. Instead they wait until there is no chance of mj rejoining them in a money spinning reunion and cash in on the renewed intrest in them because of what happened to michael.

It would be laughable if it wasnt so pathetic

Now I'm scared. Have my tickets for one of The Jacksons concerts in Europe, not sure if I'll enjoy it or not after reading this :/

I fully expected to not enjoy it, when I went, because I despise Jermaine....but I did enjoy it, in spite of myself.
I guess the MUSIC (and Marlon and Jackie) did that. Lol. I don't like them performing (and murdering) Michael's solo songs.
