CNN...About 'The Lean'

Re: CNN about 'the lean'

Every few years an article about the lean does the rounds in the media as though there's something new to say....

As long as they keep the article respectful I have no problem, but it's just lazy journalism.

Re: CNN about 'the lean'

Love the fact that 31 years later Michael's vision and imagination is still capturing the world

Re: CNN about 'the lean'

did Michael used the shoes in the music video or since the Dangerous Tour ?

Re: CNN about 'the lean'

guys you can even see the strings causing the jackets to tighten around the pockets.. that's caused by the strings holding them up, pressing against them.

The anti gravity shoes were for the backing dancers. Michael didn't need them

I think this story springs from the RECENT study that was done by a group of neurosurgeons, into the physics and the biomechanics of the lean - the impact on the body.....the repercussions of it and the necessary physical requirements. It's not just a stage trick that anyone can do.

Here it is:

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-44195073

I, for one, hadn't seen the lean analysed from this angle before and it brought Michael's innovations and most of all, his core body strength into the foreground....especially for people who might just be casual fans...it's this kind of thing that shows those people why he (and his dancers) stand apart from others.

Michael did use the shoes. I've seen footage of him on stage, unlocking his feet from the pegs.

It was not serious meant from analogue. Like AtlasAir said you missed a joke.

Yeah I was acting all shocked that mike didnt really defy gravity.. analogue responded jokingly.

Re: CNN about 'the lean'

Even if we know how MJ & his dancers did the lean (with the help of a patterned, special shoe system), that 45 degrees lean on stage is something that personally never ceases to amaze me.

But there were few cases in which the lean did not work as expected.

For example, one of them comes from the concert in Tokyo during the HIStory Tour (1996). In fact, MJ here fell.

Moreover, the lean did not work at all for MJ & his dancers during the HIStory concert in Amsterdam (on June 10th, 1997). As a result, they did the lean completely physically (which, of course, was less than 45 degrees).

Also, one of the reasons that the HIStory Tour from Munich (1997) was not officially released was because that one of the dancers unintentionally revealed the trick with the lean (he could not properly detach his foot from the heel slot right after finishing the lean).

That's because it wasn't funny. There are people, all over Facebook, youtube, twitter, etc., denying that he could do it at all, even with the shoes. I was responding to one such person, just today, who was trying to tell me that the lean is not physically possible.....so it wouldn't surprise me at all if there are other people wanting to say the opposite....that he was "magic" and didn't need the shoes.

Exactly. Actually, even the leans that didn't work well, still look exciting, in some way. It's a favourite element in the stage performance with everyone, world wide.
