Louis Vuitton Sent Michael Jackson-Inspired Gloves As Show Invites

As if invitations to the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2019 Menswear show in Paris weren’t already highly coveted, this season’s physical invite is a single white leather glove, which seems to be paying homage to Michael Jackson. Highsnobiety shared images of the “invite,” which is covered in small crystals and features the details of the show on the palm. Previously, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of menswear, Virgil Abloh, revealed in Interview that his next collection would be inspired by the king of pop.

The high fashion brand shared a video of the glove on Instagram, captioned “There’s only one,” a sentence which also appears printed on the glove. A computerized voice narrates, “See, the thing is, there is only one. There was only one. Not me, but you. Us. There was only one us. Copyright symbol 2019. Virgil Abloh. Care of Louis Vuitton.”

When Abloh originally announced his inspiration for the collection, he pointed out how the soundtrack of a show can truly transform the collection, explaining, “When I have Michael singing in the background, it’s a different type of shirt, it’s a different kind of boot, it’s a different fit of pants. Music is key.”

The show will take place on Thursday, January 17.

The late, great Michael Jackson is set to be honored this Thursday in Paris. No, he’s not receiving a posthumous award from the music industry, nor is there a hologram concert. Jackson will be honored by one very high-profile, very pop culture–obsessed designer at the Fall 2019 menswear shows. Back in December, Virgil Abloh announced that his second collection for Louis Vuitton as artistic director of men’s would be inspired by the man who gave us Thriller, “Smooth Criminal,” and the moonwalk.

Today, invites for the runway show went out and it seems that Abloh is taking a rather literal approach to his style tribute. Instead of a piece of paper with the place, time, and date of the show, the designer chose to distribute a single embellished white glove to each guest signed by him and printed with the address at the Jardin des Tuileries. Also on the glove, the words, “There was only one us,” which are part of a poem written by Abloh. The sparkly glove is, of course, a Jackson signifier and a small totem of his giant, starry, untouchable persona.

As Abloh explained to Interview magazine when asked about his next step at Louis Vuitton, “When I have Michael singing in the background, it’s a different type of shirt, it’s a different kind of boot, it’s a different fit of pants. Music is key.” Whether or not the invites themselves will actually be a part of the collection remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt the multidimensional creative will show a playful, nostalgic collection on the heels of his Wizard of Oz trip over the rainbow for Spring 2019. One thing is for sure: If anyone can bring fashion hype back to a diamanté-encrusted glove, it’s Abloh. Long live the King of Pop.

Thanks so much for this, Paris78. Great to hear about loving tributes, especially in the current climate. The article has all kinds of interesting things, some of them having peculiarly coincidental personal connections. In any case, I hope the show will be brilliant, just like the man who inspired Virgil Abloh.

Indeed, long live the King!

There probably won't be a single thing in this collection that I can afford.

Great timing for this. We need more of it to keep the waves from crashing in.

Vuitton’s Abloh Celebrates Michael Jackson in Paris Menswear

AP19017521869099.jpg

PARIS (AP) — Louis Vuitton’s designer Virgil Abloh transported celebrity guests at Paris Fashion Week to the graffitied streets of New York in a dramatic menswear ode to Michael Jackson.

Abloh, the first African-American to head a major European fashion house, used his unique platform Thursday to celebrate one of America’s most globally recognized and celebrated Black performers.

Here are some highlights of Thursday’s fall-winter shows.

LOUIS VUITTON GOES OFF THE WALL

Model Naomi Campbell and actors Timothee Chalamet and Joel Edgerton seemed amazed to discover a reconstructed cityscape that evoked the King of Pop’s famed music videos, all inside the Tuileries Gardens.

A young, skinny actor resembling the late Jackson as a boy drew applause as he ran and danced across the impressive set of a poor New York neighborhood.
No detail was spared.

Guests clutched their show invites that comprised a single bejeweled white glove, as their eyes were led past a Chinese business store, New York street signs, sidewalks littered with dead leaves, and a barber shop ending at a saxophonist playing on the street.

Campbell nodded to the beat of the soundtrack — an infectious checklist of Jackson’s greatest hits that had some humming well after the show had ended.

“It’s Michael Jackson. My hero,” she exclaimed.

VUITTON’S ABLOH REVISITS JACKSON

It was the flamboyance of Michael Jackson as seen through the classical prism of Louis Vuitton.
The silhouettes of some of the late star’s most eye-popping looks were taken by Abloh and revisited in a slightly more pared-down style.

A military jacket and large sash — that might have come across overly showy — were designed in a tasteful pearl-gray monochrome cashmere.

Elsewhere, a giant cropped jacket with stiff padded lapels was saved from excess with soft charcoal flannel twill.

The signature layering of the singer, who died in 2009, was ubiquitous in the 64-piece parade that went from the subtle to the not so subtle toward the end.

An overlaid silver parka coat in aluminum foil leather and a silver safety vest were among the most literal of the Jackson odes and recalled some of his most spectacular concert performances, as did the models who wore jeweled gloves.

Later in the show, Abloh made a series of prints based on a cartoon in Jackson’s 1978 film “The Wiz” that became a cult classic among Black audiences.

Abloh called his hero, Jackson, “the universal symbol of unity on the planet.” Though touching, the collection could have perhaps done without the scarf shirts fashioned out of global flags that came across as a tad busy and somewhat obvious.

Great timing, indeed; in more ways than one also. Lovely to see all the pics and articles about the show. It was bound to be phenomenal.

And here are some words from the Estate from January 16th, one day after Paris78 started this very thread. She posted this somewhere else, but I think it also belongs in here.

Hello MJFam:
The past week has been a difficult one for the Estate just as we know it has been for you. We understand that the fans want to see the Estate take public action to stop the documentary screening at Sundance in the coming days but doing so isn’t necessarily the best or only way to counter the actions of these 2 admitted liars and their co-conspirators. The Estate is here to protect and grow Michael’s legacy, and that also means keeping the public focused on his music and the true Michael that we know through projects that will capture the hearts and attention of both fans and the general public.
In the coming weeks, the Estate will be sharing information about several partnerships that celebrate Michael’s life, art, and enduring influence – some are partnerships that the Estate has already told you about and others that have been in development and not yet acknowledged publicly. The first is the reveal of the invitation to Virgil Abloh’s Paris Fashion Week show, which was a single, sparkly glove, inspired by Michael. Read more about it in this piece on Vogue, which also says "The late, great Michael Jackson is set to be honored this Thursday in Paris…Jackson will be honored by one very high-profile, very pop culture–obsessed designer at the Fall 2019 menswear shows. Back in December, Virgil Abloh announced that his second collection for Louis Vuitton as artistic director of men’s would be inspired by the man who gave us Thriller, “Smooth Criminal,” and the moonwalk.” Read the rest of the story here. In addition to your efforts to publicly shame HBO, Channel 4, Sundance, and the filmmakers for making such a vile documentary, spreading news focusing on Michael’s legacy will help combat the impact and help shift the focus where it should be. The Estate is working to do the same.

I know some people are condemning the Estate for their stance, but I think they are doing the right thing - both defending Michael against the latest wave of infamies thrown at his good name, while continuing to focus on the art projects. And just because they are not up and front giving away defense strategies and providing more publicity to the epic failure which is about to be launch, it doesn't mean they aren't doing plenty behind the scenes. I trust that the proper measures will be taken to secure Michael's legacy and all that truly counts will be revealed in due time.
