Surely, the only other artist apart from Michael that has emerged in the last 25 years that is still relevant today is Madonna.
She is still at the top of her game and unlike Prince (who I do like) can release an album or single today and it will hit the top.
I know this will get many responses that she's only famous for re-inventing herself & using her sexuality to get where she's got but that's simply not true.
My argument against the re-inventing thing is that she simply knows how to move with the times. Take 'Hung Up' for example, just when you thought her best days were over she releases a track that pop artists today would kill to make. At 47 she made a song that sounded so up to date it was futuristic.
She's also not a puppet, she has written more number one hits than any other female. Her concerts are ground breaking, and dare I say it, more enjoyable than even Michael's because every tour has something new. Although Mike slightly refines each routine. You know what Billie Jean, Beat It & the J5 medley will look like each time, where as Madonna will perform fully different versions of her hits to keep them fresh and she's learned to sing live. In fact her voice has developed amazingly in the last 10 years.
Where Madonna lacks compared to MJ is the quality of her albums. Although she is a lot more prolofic than Michael (in the last 7 years we've had 2 albums and one confirmed for this year) there are only 2 that I can fully play without skipping any tracks. Michael's are more complete.
Singles wise, however, she has made some amazing pieces of work:
Like A Prayer
Vogue
Hung Up
Music
Don't Tell Me
Papa Don't Preach
American Life
Ray Of Light
Secret
Rain
To name just 10. She has had approx 70 Top 10 hits in the UK and has inspired every female artist going today.
