Don’t let Super Bowl advertisements ruin every classic song

Dale worries about the effect songs in advertisements may have on the enjoyment of the original

We all know that the Super Bowl has turned into more than just a game. Between the orgy of media hype and Las Vegas oddsmakers, the merchandizing and the halftime spectacle, you don’t need to like football to find a reason to watch The Game. The commercials may be one of the biggest parts of the extracurricular draw. But how do commercials, and especially commercials featured on such an overblown stage, relate to the songs and the artists that lend them music?

Last year, SoBe ran a commercial that featured CGI lizards dancing to the Michael Jackson hit “Thriller.” This year, they followed up with a group of football players dancing ballet to Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.” Midway through the spot, it switches to a song written specifically for SoBe by Neff-U called “SoBelieve.”

The relationship among music, musician and advertisement is fairly straightforward in these ads. In last year’s commercial, SoBe used the irony of watching a group of CGI animals recreate Michael Jackson’s famous music video. This random time-warp to the ’80s provides a memorable, unexpected connection.

In this year’s spot, SoBe plays to the irony of football players dancing ballet, before again introducing the CGI dance party. SoBe, in the cases of “Thriller” and “Swan Lake,” uses songs that are cultural touchstones to frame the ridiculous dancing creatures. In the case of “SoBelieve,” SoBe uses a modern iteration of the jingle. This is not a case of interaction between independent art and advertising; this is simply advertising.

However, commercials often use songs that were not originally intended for use in advertising. The United States Postal Service used Steve Miller’s “Fly Like An Eagle” for years, and I’m willing to bet that you have heard the Romantics’ “What I Like About You” used in more commercials than you’d care to remember.

But advertisers are increasingly using songs from independent or fairly unknown artists to appeal to a younger, trendier crowd. You only need to look as far as your nearest Apple commercial. Apple has featured artists like Feist, the Ting Tings, Yael Naim and CSS, just to name a few. Although all of these artists had loyal followings before their use by Apple, the ads have catapulted all of them to new levels of recognition. But at what price?

The Postal Service’s Give Up has long been one of my favorite albums. And, if you were to ask me what my favorite song was (before the UPS whiteboard ads), I would have immediately answered “Such Great Heights.” Now, instead of feeling that surge of relaxation anytime I hear the opening notes, I expect to be submitted to some shipping explanation in color-coordinated dry-erase marker. The UPS commercial has effectively ruined one of my favorite songs. I wouldn’t doubt if many of you have had similar experiences with Feist’s “1234” or Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am.”

Besides the problem of overexposure, there are also the incongruous pairings of song with product. The UPS whiteboard ads are a mild example of this, featuring a song by a band called “The Postal Service.” Perhaps more problematic are instances like Nike’s use of Saul Williams’ “List of Demands.” How is it that Saul Williams’ call for a radical shift in race relations became appropriated for selling workout gear? How can such a revolutionary message be whored out to sell sneakers and overpriced shorts?

I’m not condemning all artists who license their music for advertising. If a placement in an ad generates needed income or raises visibility, more power to you. However, allowing another person control over the connections and associations that an average person has with your art is a risky venture. In my opinion, there is a steep price to pay for widespread recognition.

Did the addition of popular music to a commercial actually increase your enjoyment of the song? Let Dale know at dpmundt@wisc.edu

Top Five Super Bowl Halftime Shows

From 1967-1990, the Super Bowl halftime shows were relatively low-key, with the headliners usually being college marching bands and drill teams.
There were a few exceptions, Ella Fittzgerald's tribute to Louis Armstrong in Super Bowl VI, or Mercer Ellington's tribute to his father, Duke, during Super Bowl IX.

But in 1993, NFL officials decided that they needed to find a way to keep fans interested during halftime, so they booked only one performer for halftime of Super Bowl XXVII: Michael Jackson.

Ever since, the NFL has had big name artists perform solo and duets during pre-game ceremonies and half time, including performances from Diana Ross, the Blues Brothers, ZZ Top, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Toni Braxton, Aerosmith, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears.

Although these performances were good, there are five that have been legendary:

    5. Michael Jackson, Super Bowl XXVII
The show begins with Michael being catapulted from backstage, then holding a pose for well over a minute before removing his sunglasses. He performed a short medley of some of his greatest hits, before finishing with "Heal the World," with help from a choir of 3,500 children. Classic Michael.

On the Scene: Lady GaGa's 'LoveGame' video

She humped inflatable pool toys in the video for "Just Dance" and taunted enormous dogs with her "Poker Face." For her next trick, pop provocatease Lady GaGa is going old school. Shot inside a warehouse at the Port of L.A. (where I visited for a feature on the tiny blond sequin-spreader that will run in the magazine next week), the "LoveGame" video is set on a subway platform, wet concrete glistening beneath a menacing flock of bondage-loving biker-gang dancers who back the Lady through a routine that's part Rhythm Nation, part Blonde Ambition Tour, and generally takes so many cues from Michael Jackson's "Bad" clip that after one of the nearly two dozen runs through the chorus, GaGa herself actually stage-whispered, "Who's bad?"

"I wanted to have that big giant dance video moment," said GaGa of the concept, directed by Joseph Kahn (Britney Spears' "Toxic"). "I wanted it to be plastic, beautiful, gorgeous, sweaty, tar on the floor, bad-ass boys, but when you got close, the look in everybody's eyes was f---ing honest and scary." Aside from the bikers, a collection of cops and club kids milled around the warehouse, which housed other set pieces like parked cars and a token booth; the Lady also endured hours of body paint for what she calls "the most brilliant setup of the two days," in which she's "naked, but covered in art."

Michael has put a permenant POSITIVE imprint on the Superbowl...not just once but twice!!
Sony/ATV, a joint venture between Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and pop star Michael Jackson, expects more music catalogues to be put up for sale this year as people look to cash in profits in a slowing economy, said CEO Martin Bandier in a telephone interview.

"To the extent that large acquisitions become available, Sony/ATV is in a particularly good place," he said. "It's hard to overpay for a great Picasso...if you're buying quality music that will last for generations. Great songs are a rarity."

Sony/ATV is a traditional music publisher which makes money every time a piece of music is used on a variety of outlets including radio, movies, live performances, advertising as well as a share from recorded music sales.

    Reuter, 17 Apr 2008

Michael P. Schulhof, president and CEO, Sony Corporation of America, said: "Michael Jackson is not only the most successful entertainer in history; he is also an astute businessman. Michael understands the importance of copyrights and the role they play in the introduction of new technologies. In joining us for this new venture, Michael recognizes Sony's leadership in developing and realizing new technologies that serve to expand the creative horizons of artists such as himself.

He added, "To have Michael Jack son's song catalogues joined with ours will enable both Sony Music and Michael Jackson to aggressively build on a publishing portfolio filled with songs that are acknowledged as the cornerstones of popular music today."

Name of the game - lets sue Michael Jackson...

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090203...gAcNETdzdxFb8C

African singer sues Michael Jackson and Rihanna

PARIS (AFP) – Cameroonian singer Manu Dibango lodged a lawsuit against king of pop Michael Jackson and R'n'B diva Rihanna at a Paris court on Tuesday, claiming they stole a hook from one of his songs.
French judges will decide on February 17 whether to allow the 75-year-old African's case against the artists to be heard. He is reportedly seeking 500,000 euros in damages.
Jackson had already accepted that parts of Dibango's 1972 "Soul Makossa" were used on the track "Wanna be Startin' Something" on the 1983 album "Thriller," and the singers had reached a financial settlement.
But in 2007, Rihanna -- apparently in good faith -- obtained Jackson's permission to use the same section of melody on her hit single "Please don't stop the music," without also contacting the original artist Dibango.
Separately, Paris-based Dibango's lawyers have asked the French courts to block record labels Sony BMG, EMI and Warner from receiving any income from the records until the matter is settled.

    I swear it's getting old.
