Good English-speaking radio stations ?

Hi everyone how ya doing ? :)

I was born and live in France so English is not my mother tongue and i'd like to better my English. The thing is when you study a language if you do not speak/read/hear it often enough, you start forgetting what you've learnt very fast. As a consequence, i would like you all no matter what country you live in to tell me about good English-speaking radio stations i could listen to on the internet LIVE, possibly radio stations websites that do not cut off all the time haha. Please if you know good radio stations, no matter the country it is located in (USA, England, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, etc....) do not hesitate to post the link of the website thanks to which i could listen to them.

At this point, you might be wondering "what kind of radio station is he searching for ? what does he wanna hear/listen to ?"

Well, first and foremost i'd like to listen to instructive things to be able to learn while listening to the radio so a radio station whose program (is it the right word ?) revolves around jokes and hosts who do these prank calls things is not what i am searching for right now. When i say "instructive things" what i have in mind is a lot of news (NOT showbiz gossip i hate that !!!!) being discussed by hosts and ideally by people who call the radio station to give their opinion.

I'm also referring to radio shows that can help you in you daily life e.g, shows in which people who know what they are talking about discuss sex life (for these shows send me the links via PM as there are people of all ages here), advice about pets, children, all kinds of tips basically. I do not know if my thread is clear.

PS: it would be cool if you knew radio stations that broadcast nice artists interviews too. :)

I think your english level is soooo good
I would like to speak like you as a french myself
I have been trying for 2 years now to improve my level but it seems something is lowering me each time

I try one month then i give up 2 months and its like i have to start again from the beginning

My very dream is to become "fluent" in english like realy "fluent"
But the more time is passing the more i feel like the top of the mountain is less and less reachable
I am so despearte !!

Well, talking with English-speaking people on msn and Skype could help you improve. You could play with DVDs subtitles too and travel. I hardly ever watch Al Jazeera or Skynews but i think it could help you too. Thx for the compliment btw. :)
 
Well, I'm not a native English speaker so I don't know any English radio stations, but I do have some advice on how to improve your English and it's very simple: subtitles :) For example, whenever I watch an English/American movie I add English subtitles (most movies have this option) or when I listen to an English song on YouTube, I always look for a video with the lyrics. That way you learn both pronunctiation and spelling, and it's easier to understand (because sometimes people speak too fast or unclear, but then the text shows you what they're saying). When you come across a word you are not familiar with, make sure to look it up in a dictionary. I have done this for years and it greatly improved my English (although it is still not on the level I'd like it to be) :)
 
^^^ Thx for answering but i already do all the things you've mentionned. This thread is more about me trying to find an English-speaking radio stations than trying to "learn English". Maybe my answer to serena's post got you confused. Lol, it looks like i derailed my own thread answering her. I think i'll just google ma answer. If i find anything i'll post the links here.

I'm learning French, so I understand your frustrations! I like to listen to M FM and Hot Mix Radio Frenchy on the internet. They just play music. What French radio stations do you like?

For English talk radio stations, I like NPR (National Public Radio). They cover the news and a variety of topics. The website is www.npr.org

You can listen to a 24-hour national stream on that site. NPR has correspondents from the US and UK, so you'll hear different accents.

This link will take you directly to um, how do you say in English ? Basically, if you use this link u'll hear the radio station directly. That's the one i listen to the most when i am on the computer and want to have some background noise (sometimes i cannot stand silence). There are talk shows on it, some discuss television i.e the audience ratings, shows that are successful, some people call to give their opinions, bla bla, you have more serious talk shows that discuss current events, i.e politics, economics, etc. There's a show i listen to often on that station, it's called "on va s'gêner" it's broadcast from 15:30 to 18:00, they joke around a lot, and it can get really "goo goo ga ga" if you know what i mean. It does make me laugh sometimes haha.

I used to listen to this one often, i like their talk shows, my favourite is the one that discusses *ahem*, you're old enough right ? I gotta listen to that radio station again. I like the way people call and give their opinion.

Obviously, since you're from the USA, you won't be able to listen to these radio stations shows on time, but you can download podcasts. Like, let's say you missed Thursday show, what you can do is go to the website and download the podcast (the show you missed) and listen to it. Many people do that as they work and do not have the time to listen to the radio shows when they're being broadcast. If you listen to the radio too late like let's say 2 or 3 AM France time (i think i did that during a summer a long time ago) all you'll be able to hear is reruns i think. :)

What i do not like when listening to the radio on the internet is that, on some days it cuts off all the time and you to refresh the page.

i guess the BBC stations are a good choice. you have radio 5 live which is a talk station.they discuss everything and anything. or you have a station like radio 4 which is kinda for older ppl. more news and documentry type programes.

Have you had a chance to listen to NPR yet? Honestly, I don't know if the stream drops very often, since I usually just listen to it over the air.

Yes, i did listen to it a little today, i think what was being broadcast was "Fresh Air". I heard a few songs and thought "the heck is this ?" cause it nearly sounded like country music at one point. If by "drop" you mean it cuts off like you do not hear anything at one point well yeah it did happen once, i waited then decided to listen to radio 5 and it happened too so i had to refresh the page.

Oh by the way, if you get to listen to the show called "Lahaie, l'Amour et Vous" on RMC (only if you're old enough otherwise i'll go to hell for telling you about it) tell me what u think about it please. :)

EDIT: I'm listening to "Overnight with Michael Mclaren" on 2GB, he's good. Drew sorry for being slow but how do you see fiveaa's schedule on the radio station website ? I can see the "shows" section but not the "schedule" one. I can find it on 2GB's website though.

I don't think you can on 5aa. Michael McLaren I've not heard before - I still wish I had an AM radio to hear it. The schedule I found here with the presenters and the show titles and times - unless that's what you'd already found.

Wikipedia also has a list of good talkback stations and contemporary adult stations on that list. Not sure which ones are your sort of interest but there's loads to click through and see. I'll list the Australian ones and their locations:

Yeah - by "drops," I meant that the stream cuts off.

NPR does cover a variety of topics - some interest me, others don't. For instance, today they had an interview with Tina Fey (an American comedienne and actor, if you're not familiar with her). I was interested in that.

I haven't had a chance to listen to your suggestions yet, but I bookmarked them. I'm old enough for "Lahaie, l'Amour et Vous" on RMC, but I probably won't understand any of it! I'm still at a basic level, and I assume that a lot of slang is used on that show. I look forward to getting to the point where I can understand that show - LOL!
 
^^^ I do know Tina Fey, she's extremely good-looking !!! I got her movie called "Baby Mama". I have not watched it all yet. :)

The female host i was referring to does not talk fast so i guess you might understand at least a little. :)

I would also recommend NPR - I am sure when you have given it a decent go you will be hooked :)
