VIDEO: 70 Mill. People Watched Evolution of Dance

Jud Laipply put his video up on YouTube almost by accident. Soon it became the most viewed video on the Internet.

When Judison ‘Jud’ Laipply decided to film his dance sketch called ‘Evolution of Dance’ and put it up on YouTube, he thought he was doing a favour to school kids in Cleveland. But what he did not know is that more than 70 million people would watch his video in under a year.

I got the idea for the sketch as I was watching a stand-up about people loving to dance to certain songs. You have the empty dance floor and the moment a song people know starts, everybody gets up, dance and return to their tables. Several seconds later the dance floor is empty again, Jud recalls the beginning of the most viewed video on YouTube. He immediately got the idea of combining various dances and sort them in chronological order.

I decided to start with Elvis because dances before him included a partner and then I just added dances up until the year 2000, Laipply explained his choice of songs and dances in the “Evolution of Dance” that includes songs from AC/DC, Michael Jackson, Rednex, Styx and many, many others. In time, the sketch grew to six minutes with over thirty songs.

Jud works as an inspirational comedian in companies and schools. He says the video came to be by accident.

Thrilled friends

Kids from a school in Cleveland asked me to put up the video on YouTube so they could learn it. I did that and sent them the link, Laippy said. At the time he did not think he would reap any success among the other videos. But after several days when he came back from a trip, his telephone started to ring.

Do you know that more than 100,000 people saw your video, a friend asked Jud over the telephone. Another friends, who phones several minutes later, said the number of viewers had risen to 400,000. Laippy could not believe it. In the following couple of weeks the number of viewers rose by several million, to far exceed 70 million today.

The rest, as they say, is history.
