Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #27
A fortnightly newsletter highlighting some of the many classic songs in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog.

From Alan Warner, Creative Consultant

Songs by the multi-talented BABYFACE

Prolific Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter/producer Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds became one of the cornerstones of rhythm and blues music in the 1990’s and his catalog of compositions contains styles ranging from the swingbeat productions he created with L.A. Reid to his trademark romantic ballads.

The following wide-ranging list speaks for itself featuring, as it does, not only songs written and recorded by Babyface himself but many of the key releases on LaFace, the label he created in 1989 with his longtime partner, Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid.

You’ll also discover titles recorded by The Deele (the group which included both Babyface and L.A.), Milestone (who were Babyface and his brothers Kevon & Melvin Edmonds) and After 7 who are Kevon & Melvin along with L.A. Reid’s cousin, Keith Mitchell. In addition, note that the co-author credits on many of the key titles is out-standing songwriter Darryl Simmons who, like LA & Babyface, called Atlanta home.

Another standout is the range of songs that Babyface has written for motion pictures including the memorable score he wrote for Forest Whitaker’s movie version of Terry McMillan’s novel “Waiting To Exhale” in 1995.

Michael Jackson gives some insight into gesture drawing

For todays gesture drawing class, I grabbed a few frames from some home video footage of Michael Jackson dancing in a doorway. What I wanted to show the class was how conscious Michael is of where his body is in relation to the audience (in this case the camera). Every pose he strikes, and every move he makes is tailored to the viewer to give maximum readability and appeal. Every single pose creates a clear and striking silhouette. That's what we should be aiming for when we're drawing. For Michael, since he knows the camera is locked, he adjusts his body to create clear and readable poses. For us, as artists drawing a locked subject, we need to adjust our drawings in order to create clear and readable poses. It's not just about capturing what we see in front of us. It's also very important how we present what we see. Michael was keenly aware of his relationship with the audience. We should be too.

Look at the great lines and shapes Michael creates with his body, playing around with weight (the moonwalk is the ultimate example of playing with the illusion of weightlessness) and embodying different attitudes. It's no different in animation and drawing.

Here is a link to the actual clip.

And here are some great clips of him moonwalking (notice how you almost always see the moonwalk from a side profile angle? It's because that's the angle at which it reads the best):

So next time you draw, don't be afraid to push, pull, move and turn things in order to clarify your drawing for the audience. You're the director of your drawing. Don't be afraid to direct!

I found this whole paragraph very interesting to read. And the statement I highlighted...is so very true about MJ; I've noticed that before and thought about it. And even the dancer form/body God wroughted for MJ aids in this readibility whenever he does a movement or strikes a pose...his long slim limbs and expressive torso, etc. It's really wonderful actually, when you think about. God knew what He was doing.

Thanks for posting this, Rasta. :D

Re: 25 Sep08: mentionings.............

wow, great describtion of his dance moves. Awesome find, Rasta!
In "In the Closet" video when he's dancing in the door, it's strikingly perfect. He's such a great dancer!!!

Neyo wants a Thrilling Jackson tune

24/09/2008

Michael Jackson is so desperate for his comeback album to be a success that he's given his songwriters an ultimatum - make it better than Thriller or forget it.

Hit-maker Neyo, who is on Jackson's select team, told us before his show-stopping Year Of Gentleman-themed gig at Hammersmith Apollo: "Michael's new album has to be amazing. I've already submitted some songs but we have no idea when it's coming out. He keeps putting it off."

"Michael is very nervous as he knows he's the underdog and people want him to fail."

"It's tough when all eyes are on him and there is so much young competition out there."

"This album needs to be better than Thriller. He wants killer melodies."

Neyo, who has written chart-toppers for the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna, admits he was terrified when he first met Jackson face to face.

"My hands were shaking like never before. But the great thing is that I get to work with my idol and he is really cool."

COLUMN ONE
In Macon, music softens a racial divide

42524857.jpg

DJs Rory Tibbals, left, and Dallas Jackson perform at a club in Macon, Ga., that attracts a mixed-race crowd. Tibbals, a lieutenant in the Air Force, calls himself DJ Tagg. “You go to school these days, you’re in a mixed class. You go to work, it’s integrated,” he said. Jackson, who spins records as DJ Roger Riddle, said, “Every year, kids get better about race.”

The Georgia city that saw riots and rallies a generation ago now sees blacks and whites mixing on the dance floor. But those gatherings are still the exception.

By Richard Fausset, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
September 24, 2008

MACON, GA. -- The three deejays spun R&B and hip-hop, with a focus on oldies, party anthems and black artists gone mainstream -- Michael Jackson, OutKast, Gnarls Barkley.

These were carefully chosen common denominators, songs that black and white club-goers might agree upon in 2008. And, in fact, the two races were here in equal measure on a Friday night, dancing shoulder to shoulder at this upscale club in the heart of the old Confederacy.

The dancers, about 50 of them, were too young to remember April 1968, when angry blacks rioted here after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. They were too young to recall Feb. 18, 1970, when 4,000 whites rallied against desegregation just across the Ocmulgee River. They were too young to remember "Machine Gun" Ronnie Thompson, the white mayor from 1967 to 1975 who threatened that his police would "shoot to kill" rioters on his watch.

To club-goers like Nathan Hicks, the mixed-race dance floor at Club Envy represents a departure from all that.

"You're seeing a very unique time, locally and nationally," said Hicks, 30, a lawyer who is white. "Nationally, you have the introduction of the first serious black candidate for president. Locally, things have been divided for a long time."

But now, he said, Macon has something new: "a generation that doesn't know that racial divide."

Political observers are wondering whether younger voters, unburdened by ancient racial biases and baggage, might make an impact in November's presidential election. In a handful of Southern states, such voters could help Democrat Barack Obama mount a serious challenge to Republican John McCain, potentially canceling out lingering prejudices harmful to a black candidate.

The trio of deejays at Club Envy have been throwing multiracial dance parties like this for a few years around Macon, and they are aware that they have tapped into the forces that have been reshaping racial attitudes -- even in the South.

"It was bound to happen," said Rory Tibbals, 30, who is white. Tibbals, a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, calls himself DJ Tagg. "You go to school these days, you're in a mixed class. You go to work, it's integrated."

"I swear," added Dallas Jackson, a black 33-year-old who spins records as DJ Roger Riddle. "Every year, kids get better about race."

But the crew, rounded out by a black rap station personality named Ronald "Dirt Dog" Jackson, also know that Macon has by no means transcended the boundaries of race. The crowds they draw, by local night-life standards, are relatively small. Their black-and-white audiences are exceptions to the rule in Middle Georgia, where clubs tend to be as segregated on Saturday night as churches are the following morning.

Here, the borderlines of race may shift and blur; they can be crossed by a deejay or a dancer. But they still exist, for better or worse, shaping the flow of any given weekend.

Macon, with a population of 97,000, is an old cotton hub about 90 minutes from Atlanta. It's just far enough to feel outside the big city's orbit and part of a deeper South. Decades ago, white flight and suburban malls hollowed Macon's historic core, leaving blocks of empty and underused buildings. Some are still tagged with the ghost logos of long-gone stores.

There are a handful of bars and restaurants, the sprouts of a much-hoped-for urban renewal. Among them, Club Envy was advertising itself Friday night with a beat that echoed into an otherwise quiet expanse of MLK Jr. Boulevard.

Shirod "Slim" Cooley was manning the door. He said he has grown used to the revelers who drive by in their cars, confused by the mix of people they see milling around outside.

"They'll pull up and say, 'What kind of club is this?' " he said. "I'll say, 'Go in there and see.' "

Inside, in the main room, DJ Tagg had the run of the sound system. He bobbed behind a table crowded with LPs, turntables and laptops, his head cocked sideways to brace a set of headphones. The shuffling bass line of "Billie Jean" shook the room.

A small group of women in their 20s -- all black except for one -- danced closely, sipping cocktails and shouting happily in each others' ears.

"One of the reasons these parties are desegregated is because they mix up the music," shouted Cameron Beasley, 23, who was collecting the cover charge. "I mean, who doesn't like 'Billie Jean'?"

Ooo, Toni's up there, you go gurl!

yeah great find Rasta Pasta.

wbss21 should be around soon to agree strongly with it, lol.

Her and that rep, damn  ...

Re: Michael Wants Comeback Album to be bigger than Thriller

I think it is unfair to Michael to put his out there as his words when it is probably another artist speculating about what MJ wants.
Even if MJ said that, he didn't say it publicly, it is his confidential speak with the people he is working with. i think it is unfair to be putting this out there as gospel. Things like this would add to the delay of any albums cause MJ needs to be able to sdpeak to the people he is working with without it going to the press. It is disrespectful and I do not like Neyo for this.
It might jepordise his relationship with Michael.

Re: Michael Wants Comeback Album to be bigger than Thriller

Umm, the mirror  NO offense, just saying you gotta be careful.

Re: Michael Wants Comeback Album to be bigger than Thriller

Michael's already done better then "Thriller". If he wants to do that again, all he needs to do is ditch these songwriters and write the tracks himself. And believe me Michael, you ain't got nothin' to worry about from the "young competetion".

Re: Michael Wants Comeback Album to be bigger than Thriller

I just get angry with these people some times. how is Michael supposed to work professionally with these people when they keep running off their mouths in the medias. I wouldn't be surprised if these guy has MJ speaking on tape, so he can use it in a song ir something. Neyo sounds very warped and unsavoury to me, Maybe MJ doesn't trust him. He has said too much.

Re: Michael Wants Comeback Album to be bigger than Thriller

Well,it's obvious that there is a hell lot of pressure on him and I think he is right, the media mainly wants him to fail.Now...I guess it depends on what "Better than Thriller" means. If he is thinking numbers, then it's not going to happen, just because the music industry today is as it is.People don't buy so many records nowadays. But,if he is thinking "better than Thriller" as in the songs on it must be better than the ones on Thriller - this is more then possible. He can do this with no stress! He just has to have faith in his talent.:D

Re: Michael Wants Comeback Album to be bigger than Thriller

And the title is deceptive too, cause unless we hear michael say these words, this is only coming from Neyo, not Michael.

Agree on that! The numbers he can forget. But I can definetly imagine Michael giving that message to the ones that are writing for him. NOT nececarly take it littarally but to motivate them and pushing them to the max. Giving them an idea you know.

Her and that rep, damn  ...

You're tellin' me! lol. That's what I get for being rabid about making people appreciate his talent, lol.

But, in predictable fashion, I do agree with that article and I'm glad to see someone acknowledge the asthetic beauty of Michael's dancing. See, what seperates Michael as a dancer from almost everybody else is how clean he is combined with seemless fluidity and lightening quickness. It's true that a photograph can be taken of every pose he hits, or whichever position he finds himself in, at any given moment, and it will make for a perfect cut out, or silouhette, in which you can make out the positioning of his limbs and/or torso with total clarity. Check out any photo of him dancing and you'll see it. He's incredibly tight and accurate. And when you watch him in live action, and that cleanness is combined with this incredible speed and this perfect, uninteruppted connection of steps, it's the most incredible thing to look at. Like watch his opening sequence during "Billie Jean" on Motwon 25. He's so controlled and fast and his limbs just seem to cut through the air with no resistence. He has no excess movment, that's what makes him so clean. Like if you really pay attention to him when he's dancing, you'll notice how he connects each pose with a series of smaller steps in between, which sort of carry him from one pose to the next with perfect efficiency and percisian, and it makes his dancing completely fluid and stream lined. Other dancers often throw themselves in to the next pose, or thrash about in an unorganized, unthought out way to get there, and they appear sloppy and out of place between poses because of it. Michael dances to the next pose, each minuet movement is as important a step as the main one. It's not that Michael conciously thinks of connecting each pose with a series of smaller, just as thought out and cared for steps, it's just what he does naturally. He's truly a superior dancer.

Family of woman who died during Jackson visit drops Marian suit
By Samantha Yale/Staff Writer
A lawsuit filed against Marian Medical Center alleging intentional infliction of emotional and mental distress and elder abuse related to a visit by pop star Michael Jackson to the hospital has been dismissed.
The suit was filed in Santa Barbara County Superior Court in Santa Maria in February 2007 by the family of Manuela Gomez Ruiz of Santa Maria, who died at the hospital in February 2005 at the age of 73.
Marian Medical Center's parent company, Catholic Healthcare West, was also named as a defendant.
According to the complaint filed by the plaintiffs, the hospital moved Ruiz while she was being treated to make space for Jackson to be examined. Jackson was brought to the hospital in 2005 while he was on trial for child molestation and other charges.
Ruiz died at Marian Medical Center shortly after she was reportedly moved to another hospital room to give room to Jackson, who was ultimately acquitted of the charges.
Jackson originally was named as a defendant in the suit, but in April Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville removed Jackson as a defendant.
The plaintiffs - Maria Elena Ortiz, Rosa Meraz and Marcos Meraz, together with their attorney James McKiernan - filed a request to dismiss the case on Aug. 19.
A reason for the dismissal being sought was not listed in the court documents, and McKiernan could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
A trial date had been set for Oct. 27, but the civil clerk's office in Santa Maria reported that all future court appearances for the case has been canceled.
Four days earlier, on Aug. 15, McKiernan filed a a document that said he was making a motion to be relieved as the plaintiffs' attorney.
“A difference in case and trial strategy has occurred resulting in an irreconcilable breakdown of the attorney-client relationship, adversely affecting the ability of the plaintiffs' current lawyer to continue with the plaintiffs' representation,” McKiernan wrote in the court papers.
The attorney for the hospital, Hugh Spackman, could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

thanks for the clip-Michael is a great dancer:-D
this album will take a long time...Mike wants PERFECTION!genius, what to say;-)

i dont believe michael thinks that people want him to fail. not after all the love and adulation he's gotten since day one from the whole world. through all the hard times in his life his fans stood by him and showed him limitless support and unconditional love. he knows that very well. as for the general public, i believe that once michael releases his album they're gonna love it and its gonna top the charts all over the globe. not everyone in the media hates him. there are many ppl in the media that are fans and truly adore him. they talk about every move he makes (where he went for dinner, what movie he went to see, how much pop corn he ate, how long he stayed in the bathroom lol etc etc) so we can only imagine how crazy they're gonna get when he releases new music. they ask the ppl who are working with him more questions about him than about them lol. they're totally crazy about him as they always were. the ppl of the general public are going to forget all the ish of the past and their opinions about him and they're going to support him as an artist again.
as for his young competition comment..... :bs: they are the ones who should feel intimidated by him not the other way 'round. i believe that is not true either and it is just what ne-yo believes or wants to believe.

I agree Roxanne. I think it is Neyo that is not confident. When he speaks about MJ he leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth., he acts as if it is MJ that must learn from him. He shows no deference in his commentary. i am getting tired of this man. he needs to learn respect.

I am pissed off if NeYo said those things. I like his songs though, especially "Closer"

Despite all my moaning about the quality of promo Mike receives, I guess somebody somewhere is doing things right. Apologies to those people.
