Sony/ATV’s "Musical Notes" #33 - Lowery Music
Jan 23, 2009

Sony/ATV’s "Musical Notes" #33
A fortnightly newsletter highlighting some of the many classic songs in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog.

From Alan Warner, Creative Consultant

***************

*DOWN IN THE BOONDOCKS is among the major hit songs published by Lowery Music, the company which is now part of Sony/ATV’s catalog of classic songs of yesteryear.

THE LEGACY OF LOWERY MUSIC

Bill Lowery (1925-2004)

Atlanta is among this country’s most important musical cities – a veritable hotbed of writing and recording talent - and one of its musical forefathers was music publishing legend Bill Lowery.

Beginning his career in radio, Bill became a top country disc jockey on Atlanta’s station WGST. He then decided to branch out into music music publishing. With his partner Dennis ‘Boots’ Woodall, he founded Lowery Music in 1952 and in ’56, the company claimed its first million-seller: the rock ‘n’ roll classic BE-BOP-A-LULA. A few months later, Lowery struck gold again with the ballad YOUNG LOVE which scored a double hat-trick, topping both Billboard’s Hot 100 Pop and Country singles chart with competing versions!

One of Bill’s great strengths was that he built a catalog of songs in many different styles: Country, Rockabilly, Mainstream Pop, R&B, Disco and even Inspirational Music.

Among the key writers Bill signed were Joe South, Ray Stevens, Jerry Reed, Tommy Roe, Sammy Johns, Ray Whitley and Buddy Buie.

He sold Lowery Music to Sony in 1999 and we have put together a group of those outstanding copyrights listed in alphabetical order. Because the list is long, it is being presented in two parts…this newsletter contains songs from A to J and the next “Musical Notes” will complete the list from K to Z.

And now…

Part 1 of our list of outstanding copyrights from The Lowery Music Catalog

AHAB THE ARAB (Ray Stevens)
“Let me tell you ‘bout Ahab The Arab, the sheik of the burnin’ sand” runs this fine comedy song which first put country star Ray Stevens on the map. During the narratives on the record, Ray namechecks institutions such as the Grand Ole Opry, Hershey bars and RC Cola! Doctor Demento would recommend this in seconds!
By Ray Stevens (Mercury/Universal: 1961) US #5 Pop
Other versions incl: Kinky Friedman (Epic/Sony), Jimmy Savile (UK Decca/Universal).

ALIEN (Buddy Buie/Randy Lewis/Steve McRay)
Steve McRay and the late Randy Lewis were members of much-loved Atlanta bar band called Mose Jones who cut the original version of ALIEN.
By The Atlanta Rhythm Section (Columbia/Sony: 1981) US #29 Pop, #16 AC

ALL MY HARD TIMES (Joe South)
Optimistic ballad (“All Of My Hard Times soon will be over”) which was a country smash for Roy Drusky in the fall of 1970 but it also was a perfect fit for stylish R&B singer Joe Simon.
By Roy Drusky (Mercury/Universal: 1970) US #9 Country
Other versions incl: Joe Simon (Spring/UK Ace), Joe South (Capitol/EMI), The Tams (ABC-Paramount/Universal)

AMERICA (Sammy Johns)
“And my brothers are all black and white, yellow too/And the red man is right, to expect a little from you/Promise and then follow through, America”.
A wonderfully inspring song about the spirit of fellowship upon which this great country was founded.
By Waylon Jennings (RCA/Sony: 1984) US #6 Country

ANGEL (WHAT IN THE WORLD’S COME OVER US)(Buddy Buie/Robert Nix/Barry Bailey)
By The Atlanta Rhythm Section (Polydor/Universal: 1975) US #79 Pop

ARISE MY LOVE (Eddie Carswell)
“Arise, my love. Arise, my love/The grave no longer has a hold on you/No more death's sting, no more suffering/Arise...arise....my love”
An outstandingly powerful religious song by the five-man Christian vocal group NewSong.
By NewSong (Benson/DaySpring)
Other versions incl: The Imperials (Big God), Acappella (Word), The Singing Churchmen Of Oklahoma (CHM)

BE-BOP-A-LULA (Sheriff Tex Davis/Gene Vincent)
"Well, Be-Bop-A-Lula, she's my baby/Be-bop-a-lula, I don't mean maybe/Be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby/Be-bop-a-lula, I don't mean maybe/Be-bop-a-lula, she-he-he's my baby doll/My baby love, my baby doll”
The finest moment in the career of the often-overlooked but supremely-talented rocker Gene Vincent. The song’s co-writer ‘Sheriff’ Tex Davis was not a law enforcement officer but a DJ with Radio WCMS in Norfolk, Virginia. BE-BOP-A-LULA is a bona fide rock classic and was among the songs performed by The Beatles in Hamburg, Germany, in 1962. It was memorably featured by Gene Vincent & his group The Blue Caps in the classic rock movie, "The Girl Can't Help It" (20th Century Fox: 1956).
By Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps (Capitol/EMI: 1956) US #7 Pop, #8 R&B, #5 Country, UK #16
By The Everly Brothers (Cadence: 1960) US #74 Pop
Other versions incl: John Lennon (Apple/EMI), Paul McCartney (Capitol/EMI), Dion (Saguaro Road), The Stray Cats (Castle/Universal), Jerry Lee Lewis (Sun), Bill Black’s Combo (Hi/EMI), Elvis Presley (RCA/Sony). [Gene Vincent re-cut BE-BOP-A-LULA several times over the years, most notably as BE-BOP-A-LULA ’62 in that year for Capitol]

BE YOUNG, BE FOOLISH, BE HAPPY (Ray Whitley/James Cobb Jr.)
Outstanding ballad which became a beach music favorite here and a Northern Soul staple in Britain. It was the version by R&B vocal group The Tams which solidified its popularity. Co-written by singer Ray Whitley with the legendary J.R. Cobb of both the Classics IV and The Atlanta Rhythm Section; J.R. also played guitar on sessions with Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison and Waylon Jennings.
By The Tams (ABC/Universal: 1968) US #26 R&B, #61 Pop, UK #32 (in 1970)
By Sonia (IQ: 1991) UK #22
Other versions incl: Booker T. & The MG’s (Stax/Concord), Hank Ballard &

By Joe South (Capitol/EMI: 1969) US #96 Pop
By The Raiders (Columbia/Sony BMG: 1971) US #23 Pop, #11 AC

CHAMPAGNE JAM (Buddy Buie/Robert Nix/J.R. Cobb)
Title song from the ARS LP which rose to #7 on Billboard’s album chart.
By The Atlanta Rhythm Section (Polydor/Universal: 1978) US #43 Pop

CHANGE OF HEART (Buddy Buie/J.R. Cobb)
By Dennis Yost & The Classics IV (Imperial/EMI: 1969) US #49 Pop, #25 AC

CHERRY HILL PARK (William Gilmore/Robert Nix)
“Mary Hill was such a thrill after dark/In Cherry Hill Park”
By Billy Joe Royal (Columbia: 1969) US #15 Pop

CHEVY VAN (Sammy Johns)
Sammy Johns wrote some great songs for other artists but this he saved for himself and it became an AM radio smash throughout the summer of ’75…
“’Cause like a princess she was layin’ there/Moonlight dancin’ off her hair/She woke up and took me by the hand/We made love in my Chevy van/And that’s alright with me”
By Sammy Johns (GRC: 1975) US #5 Pop

THE CHRISTMAS SHOES (Eddie Carswell/Leonard Ahlstrom)
“It was almost Christmas time/There I stood in another line Trying to buy that last gift or two/Not really in the Christmas mood”
Major 2000 holiday seller by Christian pop group NewSong.
By NewSong (Benson: 2001) US #1 AC
Other versions incl: Leonard Ahlstrom (Music Mill)

COMMON MAN (Sammy Johns)
A song whose lyrical reference to Budweiser beer resulted in John Conlee singing it in a Bud commercial.
By Sammy Johns (Elektra/WMG: 1981) US #50 Country
By John Conlee (MCA/Universal: 1983) US #1 Country

DESPERADO LOVE (Sammy Johns/Michael Garvin)

Thriller director suing Jackson

BBC NEWS.co.uk

Thriller The 1983 video remains one of the most influential in music John Landis, who directed Michael Jackson's Thriller music video, is suing the pop star over his share of profits from the short film. The film-maker claims he has not received his 50% share for at least the past four years from Jackson's now-defunct company Optimum Productions. He also alleges the star does not have the right to license games, toys and comics based on the zombie video. Landis is best known for Blues Brothers and An American Werewolf in London.

John Landis sues Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is being sued over royalties by the director of Thriller. Michael Jackson faces more legal trouble Pop star Michael Jackson is being sued by the original director of the Thriller music video, it has been revealed. John Landis, who also directed The Blues Brothers and An American Werewolf in London, has launched a lawsuit alleging there are unpaid royalties connected to the 1983 video. His legal writ reads: "After a spectacular theatrical premier, the Thriller video became a worldwide mega-hit and an iconic pop culture phenomenon." It says the 14-minute promo continues to make profits for the defendants - Jackson and the production company - which have not been recently shared with Landis, who claims to be entitled to 50 per cent. The suit also reveals Landis is seeking damages for "fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct". Guinness World Records recognises Thriller as the most successful music video of all time, after the production sold more than one million copies. In addition, choreographer Ines Markeljevic was also noted by the organisation when he staged the biggest Thriller dance in history, recreating the video with 60 dancers in Toronto.

Michael Jackson filed a patent application for the "leaning forward a bit" dance moves displayed in the Smooth Criminal video.

It is possible to recreate the seminal Jackson stamping and holding on to trees" finale of the Earth Song video in any doorway.

In their Calvin Harris-produced but not-as-big-as-Michael Jackson Dance Wiv Me track, the Mitchell Brothers noted that "the only thing missing was the glove. But that didn't stop me strutting my stuff, Kick my legs out, clutch me hat

When Michael Jackson released Liberian Girl, Smash Hits magazine went out on to the streets of London to see if Your Average Punter could locate Liberia on a globe. One of the people they bumped into was the Rebel MC.

Rod Temperton, who wrote a load of Thriller, is from Cleethorpes. Other famous people to have come from Cleethorpes include the actress Patricia Hodge and the bassist from Saxon, neither of whom have written songs for Michael Jackson.

The flute on Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' was played by Larry Williams. The "mama se mama sa" business in the song was recently sampled by Rihanna (on Don't Stop the Music), although when Michael included those lyrics in his own version he ended up being sued for copyright infringement by Manu Dibango, and settled out of court.

Re: 29 Jan09...all about mentionings...

Some 'good' news, well it should bring a smile to your face.

Yesterday a friend of mine who is a dj called me to make a confession. Over the years he has said some horrible things about Michael. That wasn't the confession. The confession was that he sat and REALLY listened to Michael's music and has decided that Michael Jackson is a genius.

He said 'Michael Jackson IS music - the way he puts sounds together is incredible, mindblowing. The man is absolutely brilliant!'

Well I just about fell off my chair.

Just further proof that Michael's music will stand the test of time and it will speak for him long after all the stupid tabloid stories are forgotten.

Re: 29 Jan09...all about mentionings...

Any MJ rumors connecting him to the 09 Grammy's ?

Re: 29 Jan09...all about mentionings...

I had a friend who was the same way - he was always bashing him - he wasn't a DJ, but he is a local entertainer. and then, he met Michael and he began to understand the mystique behind Michael.

the bashing has stopped.... all you need to do is open your mind and see the truth behind the lies....

Re: 29 Jan09...all about mentionings...

People should not be bashing Mike in the first place. Period. There is no point of it. Why should it take for someone to listen to his music or get to meet MJ when they "change their minds" about the man? Phony. No offense to the people who posted the information, but people like that are phony to me.

Hey, RASTA!! How are you? As usual, thanks for posting the news thread. :)

LOS ANGELES - Broadway producer James L. Nederlander says he's hopeful a legal duel over "Thriller" rights can be resolved.

John Landis, who directed the iconic music video, sued Nederlander and former collaborator Michael Jackson in Santa Monica, California, on Wednesday. His lawsuit states that Landis owns half of the video's dramatic rights and says Jackson doesn't have the proper rights to pursue a deal with Nederlander to bring "Thriller" to Broadway.
In a statement Thursday, Nederlander said: "I'm confident that these past differences can be worked out."

Landis' lawyer said Wednesday the director will sue to stop the production if necessary.

An attorney who has represented Jackson hasn't returned a phone message seeking comment.

so Landis.. has ulterior motives... ummm??? the facts will come out...

Re: 29 Jan09...all about mentionings...

If Mike breathes on a Mic and makes money, people will sue him. They'll claim the air he breathed on the mic was the air they gave him or they created for him to breathe.

That explains why we never saw nothing done with Thriller in over 25 years (yeah, we had the music and the video, but no merchandising, no casinos, no theme parks, no attractions, no plays, etc.).

Re: 29 Jan09...all about mentionings...

Re: 29 Jan09...all about mentionings...

LOL! yeah I only saw the ring when he was married to deb as well.... it's funny because in some east parts of the world the man wears the wedding ring on the Right Hand whilst the woman wears it on the left - so he isn't completely wrong!
