Sony boffo in Japan

Distrib Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan made $190 million at the box office in the first 11 months of the year, an all-time company record that beat its 2007 high of $176 million. The result makes SPEJ the top earner among foreign distribs in Japan. The figure was boosted by the release of Michael Jackson docu "This Is It," which finished with $48 million.

With sci-fi smash "2012" recording $33 million since its Dec. 5 bow, SPEJ looks likely to finish the year north of the ¥20 billion ($217 million) milestone.

Daily Hitlist: Michael Jackson lives... in plastic form

A Japanese toymaker releases a portrayal of the late singer

michael_l.jpg

It's a thriller, chiller tonight.... on Japanese toy-shelves.

Must see: Japanese toy company Marusan, long known for their soft-vinyl figures of monsters from the Godzilla and Ultraman series, unveiled a new figure of Michael Jackson. Somehow, the use of plastic seems a fitting material for the late legend.

MICHAEL Jackson and Kermit the Frog have been preserved.
The unlikely duo are among film stars honoured by the US Library Of Congress which, each New Year’s Eve, selects movies to be preserved for posterity in its archives.
The latest list includes Jackson’s short Thriller film (right) – the extended video which made his zombie dance movies a worldwide phenomenon – and The Muppet Movie, in which Kermit & Co made their big screen debut.
Among others homoured are 1957 sci-fi b-movie The Incredible Shrinking Man, 1911 silent Little Nemo and 1968’s Sergio Leone spaghetti western Once Upon A Time In The West.
“The National Film Registry spotlights the importance of protecting America’s matchless film heritage and cinematic creativity,” said librarian James Billington. “By preserving the nation’s films, we safeguard a significant element of our cultural patrimony and history.”

'Thriller' to be preserved by US Library of Congress, plus 24 more films

A selection of 25 films, including historical Hollywood classics, significant documentaries, and student films, were added for preservation by the US Library of Congress for its National Film Registry. The music video for Michael Jackson's song "Thriller" is also among the latest selections.

A total of 524 films have been chosen as "cultural, artistic or historic treasures," and here are this year's other highlights (chronologically):
Little Nemo (1911)
A classic from the comic strip "Little Nemo in Slumberland," a seminal animation and comic artwork, which influenced Walt Disney.
Heroes All (1920)
Created by the Red Cross Bureau of Pictures series, the film provides historical and visual records of World War I, and examines returning wounded WWI veterans.
Jezebel (1938)
Bette Davis won her second Academy Award for this William Wyler-directed film about a head-strong southern belle. Noted for the performances, such as co-star Henry Fonda.
The Mark of Zorro (1940)
Rouben Mamoulian's inventive direction, Tyrone Power plays Don Diego dueling Basil Rathbone.
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
The sci-fi classic where a house cat and common spider become the ultimate threat to existence. Directed by Jack Arnold with imaginative special effects.
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
A so-called ‘Spaghetti Western' by director Sergio Leone with Ennio Morricone's score depicts a tale of the railroad and pays homage to Westerns.
Hot Dogs for Gauguin (1972)
A student film at New York University, it stars Danny DeVito as an unlucky photographer and wife Rhea Perlman. Directed by Martin Brest (Beverly Hills Cop, Scent of a Woman).
Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Director Sidney Lumet's suspense story about a true-life bank robbery turned media circus, starring Al Pacino whose plan goes awry.
The Muppet Movie (1979)
Musical comedy from the Muppet creators Jim Henson and Frank Oz with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Animal encountering actors such as Steve Martin and Mel Brooks.
Thriller (1983)
The 14-minute music video for the hit song, was revolutionary at the time. John Landis (Animal House and Blues Brothers) directed.
Also included: the maverick production Stark Love (1927), Roy Rogers cowboy story Under Western Stars (1938), Doris Day and Rock Hudson romantic-comedy Pillow Talk (1959), the Native American documentary The Exiles (1961), and animated short Scratch and Crow (1995).

Another Posthumous Michael Jackson Song?

Today 7:47 AM PST by Josh Grossberg

Michael Jackson's music lives on…one leak at a time.
A snippet of "Another Day," a never-released track reportedly featuring the King of Pop and Lenny Kravitz recorded before Jackson's death last June, has found its way online.
The seemingly unauthorized 90-second snippet first appeared on the fansite MJ Star and shares similarities with "Storm," a tune off Kravitz's 2004 album, Baptism. The Huffington Post claims the song is a duet between Jackson and Kravitz, but in the fragment making the rounds online, the latter is nowhere to be heard.
While his estate has yet to confirm it's Jackson's voice (calls for comment were not immediately returned), it sure sounds like the real deal.
Kravitz himself alluded to a potential collaboration in a letter to Spinner reminiscing about the time they spent in the studio together.
"I got to work with Michael on a track that has not been released and it was the most amazing experience I’ve had in the studio," wrote Kravitz. "He was funny. Very funny and we laughed the whole time."
Presumably "Another Day" is one of the many songs sitting in Jackson's vault waiting for the inevitable posthumous release.
"This Is It," the title track to the hit Jackson concert documentary, was released last October.

The Library of Congress’ National Film Registry to Add Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”

In 1983, Michael Jackson’s legendary album “Thriller” shocked the music world with sales that shattered virtually every conceivable record. The album also spawned one of the most famous music videos of all-time and helped turn Jackson into an entertainment icon.
Now, “Thriller” will become the first music album in American history to be inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. This registry is an archive that maintains and preserves original copies of motion pictures and television programs for posterity. Located at the Packard Campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Centre in the proximity of Culpeper, Virginia, the conservatory will surely keep the Jackson memory alive for decades to come.
The aforementioned video, however, will not find its way into the archives any time soon. A lawsuit over royalties between the Jackson Estate and the video’s director John Landis has led to the scenario. In time, perhaps, the matter will be settled and the video can join its album in the archives of the registry.
“Thriller”, the album, was officially entered into the registry on December 30, 2009.

Jermaine Jackson Not Happy With The FBI

Jermaine Jackson

, the brother of the late pop entertainment icon Michael Jackson, has been waging a very public verbal war with the FBI

. His anger with the FBI centers on his annoyance with the fact that the FBI has only recently declassified files that it has held on the late singer. The release of the files essentially show that the FBI “had nothing” (Jermaine’s words) on the singer. It is Jermaine Jackson’s contention that releasing the files while Michael Jackson was alive would have reduced a number of vicious rumors surrounding him.

Actually, it would have been a violation of the law to release documents about Michael Jackson while he was alive. A living person is considered a private citizen and must be protected under the United States’ privacy laws. Upon his passing, his FBI may be legally accessed. So, had the FBI released his filed while he was alive, the agency would have been open for a lawsuit.
