hey I wanted you all's thoughts/interpretations/etc. on the song "Threatened" at the end of Invincible. Particularly in regards to the lyrics.

Any takers out there for this one?

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

Don't have much time now, but I will say that I looooved what he did with the voice from The Twilight Zone! That's my favorite part! I can't think of his name either, but you know what i'm talking about. I wonder what ideas he had for visualizing this song. Because it has so much potential to also be a music video too.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

you talking about rod serling?

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

have any of you taken a close look at the lyrics throughout the whole thing? what do you think?

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

I think it could be a message to those who wronged him around the accusations/trial telling them to watch their backs. lol

On the other hand, the lyrics are strangely sexy "Watching you when you sleep, when you're in bed I'm underneath...... I'm the floor when you fall, and when you scream it's ‘cause of me

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

THREATENED

Rod Serling Intro

Tonight's story is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of
introduction
A monster had arrived in the village
The major ingredient of any recipe for fear is the unknown
And this person or thing is soon to be met
He knows every thought, he can feel every emotion
Oh yes, I did forget something didn't I?
I forgot to introduce you to the monster.

You're fearing me, ‘cause you know I'm a beast
Watching you when you sleep, when you're in bed I'm underneath
You're trapped in halls, and my face is the walls
I'm the floor when you fall, and when you scream it's ‘cause of me
I'm the living dead, the dark thoughts in your head
I know just what you said
That's why you've got to be threatened by me

Chorus:
You should be watching me, you should feel threatened
Why you sleep, why you creep, you should be threatened
Every time your lady speaks she speaks to me, threatened
Half of me you'll never be, so you should feel threatened by me

You think you're by yourself, but it's my touch you felt
I'm not a ghost from Hell, but I've got a spell on you
Your worst nightmare, it's me I'm everywhere
In one blink I'll disappear, and then I'll come back to haunt you
I'm telling you, when you lie under tomb I'm the one watching you
That's why you got to be threatened by me

Chorus

Rod Serling Verse

The unknown monster is about to embark
From a far corner, out of the dark
A nightmare, that's the case
Never Neverland, that's the place
This particular monster can read minds
Be in two places at the same time
This is judgment night, execution, slaughter
The devil, ghosts, this monster is torture
You can be sure of one thing, that's fate
A human presence that you feel is strange
A monster that you can see disappear
A monster, the worst thing to fear.

Chorus x 3

Rod Serling Outro

What you have just witnessed could be the end of a particularly
terrifying nightmare. It isn't. It's the beginning.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

I've listened to the track a ton, and it's a weak end track for what most believe to be an all-around weaker effort of an album. The song utilized the current use of electronic manipulations of the voice and I don't think it came off very well. The song IMO doesn't seem very polished and feels like it was over produced with too much going on. Also the song without the Rod Serling parts would feel more like a regular MJ song, but with his lines included it feels like a semi-remake of Thriller.

weak end track? perhaps, perhaps not.

reVealing track? Or fOr-fun track? what DO yOu all think?

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

IMO Threatened was one of the best tracks on the entire album.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

YES, Rod Serling!!! Couldn't think of his name to save my life! Well, i've still gotta say it's my second favorite upbeat song on Invincible. Unbreakable is the 1st. And it does fall into the Thriller, Ghosts, Is It Scary category for MJ songs, but I still like it for what it is. I don't care how many people call Invincible overproduced, unsuccessful, whatever...I still think the album is great in my book.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

What's interesting about the Rod Serling voice overs is that most of them are taken from a particular episode of "The Twilight Zone" about a little boy who just had to think a bad thought about someone he didn't like and that thing would happen to them. So everyone in the episode was always trying to make this kid happy and not piss him off, and no one could be angry or depressed around him or he would do things like turn you in to a jack in the box or send you to some mysterious place you could never escape from called "the corn field". It was really pretty scary.

good observation. wonder why michael would pick that particular episode to include??

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

and who knows if the rod serling verse was made for this song or put together from lots of different words to make it? it does, after all, talk about never neverland. this song talks about all kinds of things.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

I love the complexity of this song, however I don't think the lyrics has a subminimal message. I just think this is like "Thriller Pt. 2"
But if it has to be something subminimal then I think it's just "Yeah you can call me ***** or whatever, but watch this". Just to kind of turn all that tabloid junk into another level and make "art" out of it.
At the end of the day, you can find any subminimal message you want depending on what your initial thoughts wore.
I mean, let's say I want to make it as a subminimal message that it's about cigarettes.
Read the lyrics again while you think about cigarettes and you'll find that many things in the lyrics has a connection with cigarettes, or the craving of it.

You think you're by yourself, but it's my touch you felt
I'm not a ghost from Hell, but I've got a spell on you

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

the production of that song is nothing less than horrible. but the lyrich is actually a bit interesting. it give me assosiations to go in many directions, some that I cant even mention in here. I think he is playing a but with us when i wrot that song. like it!

cigarettes????

i do not belieVe, either, that there are subliminal messages in this sOng.

and this lyric is deeper and darker than a "thriller part 2" kind of thing. sOmething is going on, right unDer Our nOses...but what is it????

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

It took a while to grow on me and when i first heard it I presumed that it was a colab with Justin Timberlake (I know that's an insult to mj so i apologise) in the chorus part!

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

I don't think the messege is supposed to be subliminal. It's pretty obvious what the songs about. "Thriller" was just straight up about campy horror films and Michael singing to his girl about how he would protect her from all the ghosts and gouls, etc... But with songs like "Is It Scary" and "Ghosts", "Threatened" uses metephores in describing Michael's relationship with the world around him. It's about him and the way people regard him, etc... The horror element works well because a lot of people regard Michael as though her were some kind of monster and someone who should be freared, and the songs are telling how that feels from Michael's perspective.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

it was one of the best tracks on the album, to bad if you play it backwards theres alot of swearing and satanic messages asking us to attack people

O really? I bet your one of those people who think all those Zombies dancing in Thriller were actually dancers in heavy make up..... with some people the truth can be infront of there eyes and they will be to afraid to handle and so the lie to themselves by acting as if its not real.... well it is very real, Michael has the control over the dead, he can animate dead bodies through his dancing.... I still like him though.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

you have a point chaos.... i wonder if it will be lost

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

there's a zillion songs out there that have a good beat, and are just plain good musically and artistically. so well done, in fact, that so many people neglect to look at the lyrics of a song to see what they say and mean, and maybe even why.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

looks like thats a yes:smilerolleyes:

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

I think Threatened is Da Bommy BOMB!!I personally think that INVINCIBLE is better than THRILLER and I luv me some THRILLER.

Re: thoughts on "Threatened"

I have always enjoyed the beat of this song. It is one of my favorite's from Invincible. Hadn't listened to it in ages, but when I did, the volume was kicking!!

In the song. Michael is being playful and having alot of fun with incorporating the "monster" scary theme. He is such a fan of ghouls, lol.

But the song itself or my take on interpreting the song is this: This is a song about knowing someone is resisting you and you( the singer) not taking "no" for an answer. It's about making a "threat" to them that you are Everywhere, even in their thoughts whether they like it ot not.

The art of Pocessing your obsession.
