Feral cat volunteer work not for the weak
Those of us who volunteer our time, energy and resources to feral cats, find the work to be less than glamorous. The work can even put us in the line of public criticism and complaints. We are, in fact, serving the community with our efforts and definitely helping the animals. We do this out of our love for cats.

Just because we are volunteers, does not mean that our time is not worth as much as yours. The truth of the matter is, most of us have full time jobs and families. Even if retired, it doesn’t mean we have unlimited hours to donate. Coming to bail you out of your problem impacts our lives greatly, yet some people out there have the audacity to complain about our methods, if we are abrupt on the phone, or say that you may have to wait in line.

It never ceases to amaze and anger me when I hear of snide comments made by people behind our backs, people who have no clue what we go through in our efforts to help both the feral cats and the communities in which they live. We always hear the comments and who made them, so don’t think that it won’t get back to us. The better thing to do would be to educate your self as to what Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) means then work with, not against us.

We receive many calls each day asking for help in trapping and removing a feral cat colony. We often find these cats are not really feral but a neighbor’s pet who became pregnant and had her kittens in the caller’s backyard. Sometimes the cat actually belongs to the person on the phone, pretending innocence in hopes of a free handout of spay/neuter, vaccines and flea treatment for the lot. Still, the key word here is “colony.”

Every colony, or clowder as it is known, begins with one intact female. When a feline goes into heat, she “calls” unneutered males to her with both scent and oral signals. One or more toms will answer that call, sometimes from MILES away, so don’t think living in a country setting far from civilization will keep your only female from being impregnated. The urge to breed is ingrained, and an animal will go to great lengths to fulfill that need. But back to the public and the call for help…

The clowder now consists of at least five or six cats, but more often the numbers are in the double digits. The question we want to scream into the phone is, “Why did you wait so long to call us?” Trapping five or six cats is one thing, requiring a few hours. Trapping a colony of 10-25 takes a few days preceded by hours of prep time and often several people.

The job has now just elevated from a simple TNR to, “What are you going to do with all these cats? They can’t come back here!” It has now suddenly become a Catalyst for Cats problem.

The responsible answer is to have all your indoor/outdoor pets spayed and neutered, and there are laws in most parts of Santa Barbara County requiring this now. Why then, is the public resisting compliance yet continuing to complain when we tell them we have no room to take their unwanted kittens?

Please understand we are not a dumping ground or rescue group for unwanted tame cats. We are dedicated to helping the feral, wild ones that dwell in the shadows and sometimes breed with domesticated pets. Yes, we do take in kittens to foster, but we choose the ones born to feral queens if they are young enough to tame.If your pet has had a litter of kittens they your responsibility, not ours. Please spay and neuter them all before adopting out; giving intact animals away does not help alleviate overpopulation.

Another major problem we have when dealing with the public is they don’t listen or follow directions very well. There are really very few of us who do the TNR, and we often engage the caller to at least take some ownership of the situation and participate in catching the cats. We always give specific directions from our tried and true experiences, yet many individuals decide to do it their own way resulting in no cats or too many being trapped.

Trapping is done only when appointments have been set up with a veterinary clinic for the following day. When these appointments are not kept, it impacts the schedule of the doctor and also our schedule for the TNR jobs waiting in our queue. We cannot just take in some other cat(s), because as with humans, the animals must have fasted before surgery.

TNR is a dance. To make it work, both partners need to know the steps. Please help us help you. Pardon my ranting, but sometimes it just needs to be shouted before people will listen.

It doesn´t take long until they are more.

First thing to do is when a new cat arrives is to try to find an owner, next thing is to spay/neuter the cat.
If you are lucky there are catshelters/organizations who can help, maybe there are a free or lowcost clinic.

In Sweden we don´t have lowcost clinics, but some veterinarians might give you a better price.
Some people here thinks it´s cute when an abandoned cat comes to their summerhouse with their kittens in the beginning of the summer and they feed the cats.
But they don´t call a catshelter until the end of the summer when the catmother just had another litter and the people are going back to town and the cats are not going to get food anymore.
It´s not easy for catshelters to take the catfamily at once.

It heartbreaking to see these poor kittens and the stone that was thrown after them.
It says it´s a school lunch area and it´s likely a child who threw the stone.

In some TNR-videos I´ve been posting they spay/neuter kittens too and release them.
They say kittens can be tamed if they are caught when they are very young and it is easier when they are younger than 8 weeks.
For older kittens and adult cats it just take longer time to get social.
For TNR you should take in kittens, social cats and release feral adult cats, but I understand there are too many cats and not many homes, especially for feral kittens and to have them netered/spay,release them and care for them outdoors are the best you can do.
If I knew about feral kittens who they throw stones at or sick where I live, I wouldn´t hesitate i would trap them and take them home until I can find other homes for them

I´ve had feral kittens who were more scared than Angel.I think she must have had a little contact with humans before or they have been working with her.
To have a social, friendly cats is worth gold if you want to socialize feral kittens/cats

There has been another fire in a catshelter.
It happened in the night, no volunteers were there and this time there was no door for the cats to escape through.
It seems the house didn´t burn down to the ground but 80 cats died from the smoke,
investigation is ongoing.
Nothing can save the cats now but please pray for those who work at the shelter to give them strength.
It´s no work you get paid for, you do it because you love cats and when the investigetion is over they have to take care of 80 dead cats.
Cats they wanted to give a better life here on earth.

Here is a report from a volunteer at the catshelter

"Yesterday, we had access to the facility.
Bjorn and Maria could begin the terrible task of taking care of all the dead cats.
We were helped by the Animal Ambulance Skaraborg to transport them to Floby for cremation.
We can be thankful that it seems to have gone very fast for the little cats to die, one of them lay on his favoritechair just like he still was sleeping.
The fire started in the kitchen and was due to some sort of error, but the exact location (stove, fridge, microwave ...) We do not know."

If you don´t have smoke alarm in your homes, get it

The video of a black cat soothing a Canadian baby to sleep has gone viral online. Baby Connar is shown in the YouTube clip crying and writhing until along comes black cat Stewie who manages to lull him to sleep with patient and gentle strokes on the head.

Baby Connar seemed not to appreciate Stewie's effort to comfort him at first. The baby waves his arms over his head and wriggles as if to say, "Hey, get your hands off me, moggy!" But the patient cat persists and soon Connar stops crying, and falls sound asleep.

After the cat had lulled the fretful baby to sleep, it paused to look at the camera. The cat's big bright yellow eyes, according to Daily Mail, seemed to say: "Hey, look what I did!"

The video was first uploaded in September by Connar's father Aaron Grant, 35, a Canadian, but did not attract any attention. But after it was featured on a video-sharing website it became an instant hit and has gone viral over the last few days.

YouTube viewers are amazed at the video because the cat appears to be acting with human intent. A viewer commented: “Can't you guys see the cat and the baby are telepathically having a conversation about how drinking milk rulez!! (sic).”

There are debates if the cats should be fed or not.
I don´t want cats to starve to death, but you got to work to get the cats spayed/neutered too.
In Israel arabs ,ultra-Orthodox ones, other catlovers can work together to help the cats-and dogs but there are always problem to afford veterinarians

Overpopulation is the greatest killer of cats and dogs in Israel

Some spend their money to spay/neuter cats

If you don´t have the cats spayed/neutered there will be more and more cats and you have to buy a lot of food for them

I spent 7 months in Israel 1980.There was a cat at the kibbutz who got kittens otherwise I don´t remember I saw many cats.I know outside cats can be close but they are hiding so there are not seen
My hebrew is bad nowadays and I don´t know what they are saying, but the cats are beautiful.
