ABC is perhaps the best studio album solo or J5 MJ was involved with. True love can be beautiful, don't know why I love you, la la means I love you are also very good besides the two well known hits. It just missed out on my top 10 MJ albums, sitting at nr 11

I've been wanting to know this too for some time. It appears they didn't do much concerts in those years given the lack of info. Perhaps fatigue from the extensive world tour from 73 till 76?

May 24 '77 London at Hammersmith Odeon

January 22, 1978 &#8211; first concert, place unknown
February 24, 1978 &#8211; Port of Spain, Trinidad

February 26, 1978 &#8211; San Fernando, Trinidad
March 3, 1978: Concert in Oakland, California

I'm very much hoping for footage to emerge from these years as this is when Michael started his peak vocally as an adult (imo) which lasted till the Victory tour. So far the only real live footage comes from the Musikladen TV performance and the Venezuela TV performances which are both ****ing incredible. No touring/concert footage is available till now.

Looking at the 1978 dates I presume there must have been more dates in February, March and April at least.

Thank you. Yes, all the other tours seem to be quite well documented, but 77/78 is all over the place, as far as information goes. I&#8217;ve been reading some old newspaper articles and they mentioned Venezuela, Europe, and the USA, but without any details.

I agree that these years are very interesting regarding the development of MJ&#8217;s adult voice, and I&#8217;d really like to hear more.

Right now, I&#8217;m just trying to string those concert dates together. There must be more than a handful. :D

Some fans must have close(er) contact with one of the brothers, they only need to ask :-D

I wouldn't be totally surprised though that the majority of time went in rehearsing/filming the variety show and the touring is most probably touring Europe to appear in tv shows like Musikladen and Top Of The Pops. My main gripe with these tv shows is that performances were usually mimed (by all artists btw).
But I'm sure quite a bit actually concert dates are missing too. Michael performed "got to be there" and "never can say goodbye" during those known dates, I'm dying to hear adult Michael singing those songs, he also did "find me a girl" during 1978.

They're TV shows, not concerts. Why would you expect live singing/playing? Their main purpose was to promote the acts latest single. These shows generally had low budgets and it was cheaper and faster to have lip-syncing. A solo singer didn't have to pay a band or background singers, they could appear on the show by themselves. Without these kind of music programs many artists would not have video footage at all, especially acts considered to be "one hit wonders". Acts with one hit were not likely to have concerts filmed. They might not have performed concerts at all and are just a studio group. Disco songs often had large string sections who would not fit on a show like American Bandstand or Soul Train. It would also be too expensive to have a large band just to perform 1 or 2 songs for a TV show.

Well, one piece of the puzzle is MJ&#8217;s lung collapse on July 4th 1977. After that they had to reportedly cancel a number of shows, and after he had recovered, he was busy filming The Wiz. So, there&#8217;s that. But the spring tour in Europe did happen. MJ talks about it in interviews from the time, but only generally. I can&#8217;t find out the actual dates and places.

not all of the Jackson 5/jacksons performances on 'top of the pops' were mimed. here are just a couple:
the bbc actually showed this on tv a few months ago in pristine quality :)
 
Amazing performance of "rocking robin" much better than the album version!

How often was MJ at TOTP? Didn't they perform "push me away" there once? Was it Live?

It's funny how michael use be shy but as soon the music starts he just being to dance etc. :laughing: he even said it himself. hahaha.

Awesome performances! i notice with rockin' robin his voice is changing alittle. i agreed we need more HQ footages of these performances.
 
with 'rockin' robin', Michael's voice was clearly going through that difficult transition. well, at least that was the case for his live singing.

that's also evident in this snippet of my favourite j5 song; 'looking through the windows'. notice how he has to adjust the melody.
this performance of 'destiny' is live. this, as well as 'show you the way to go', almost match the recording :) it was released as a single. 'push me away' was not.
this was mimed for obvious reasons, but I love it :)
overall, j5/jacksons were quite successful here in the uk. 'show you the way to go' was actually the first number 1 that Michael had over here. they toured, and performed twice for the queen. I have yet to find footage of their second royal command performance in 1977. I wonder what songs they sang..
 
Yesssss love the destiny performance, especially the end :-D

I'm also very curious to what songs they performed live during 77/78. Apparently got to be there, never can say goodbye and find me a girl were in the setlist that period and I'm dying to see footage of those. Who knows what else they did!

I really hope Motown will release some more concert albums of the J5. It's such a forgotten era , it's like mining for gold, you're sure there is gold you just have to dig for it. Motown dig, please!
