if you include albums+singles, music dvds she's at an estimates 130 million records

Impressive. And to think most of those numbers are under estimates.

I heard so something about how she needs them recertified

I feel that Janet being MJs sister helped her in the door but she has had an amazing career on her own. I feel if anyother person has had the success she's had, they would get more praise than she does. For women, I think she is just as important to pop culture as Madonna even though Madonna is known more worldwide

I agree she had an easy entrance inro the industry but being a jackson can only do so much you have to work to become astar on your own no matter who you are. I also think it's hard being related to Michael if you are in the music industry because he set such a high standard which you are expected to match up to. No one matches up to him but Janet did great for herself as a female artist, heck as an artist in general. I do think being Michael's baby sister diminishes things a bit compared to if she was any other female artist but i don't think she'd have it any other way. She's accomplished alot and has a ton to be proud of, Michael always said how he was proud of her.

That's excellent! I didn't realize that Janet was so popular...

True... It was even hard for mike to live up to mike sometimes. People are like "she good, but she ain't mike"lol. I would hate to always be compared to my brother who is the sh*t in the industry. No one was/is f**king with mike.. I don't care what anyone says.
People fail to realize that she had two albums before she hit it big. I feel like her contributions should be appreciated more. I would hate for to have to die to get her due(like they did with MJ). She may not be the best singer but she is good at what she does and her rhythm nation album sh*ts on anything that some of these female artist put out today. People always talk about her sexual image but she had two full albums/eras where she wore all black, with long pants and long sleeves. At the end of rhythm nation she finally showed her stomach and thats all she really showed. She never shook her behind and was always half naked like artist are now just to make it big.

Very impressive, and lots of them are too low aswell, Janet hasn't had them re-certified in years, control since 1989 !!

Together Again is way out, its listed as one of the best selling singles in history with 6 million sold, lots of the others are out aswell.

Yup, being compared to Michael you never get you due but like you said he wasn't even fully appreciated until he passed. Michael aslways had respect as an artist but people tried to downplay his success the last decade and a half of his life.janet isn't the strongest singer but she's a great entertainer and unfortunately like all great artist you aren't fully appreciated till you're gone and it'll be the same for Janet.

Rhythm Nation is one fo my favorite albums, it's one of the few albums i could listen without skipping a track. I like that she used to cover up as well because no one could saying she was only good for her body but that was part of her insecurities which i'm glad she shed.

I agree... It's sad that most won't get their due until they are here to see it

Certification - 5x platinum
Soundscan - 505,018
BMG Club House - 883,000

= 6,388,018

Control is obviously 6x platinum. Columbia House was comparable in size to Sony BMG Music Club, so it has probably sold the same amount there as in BMG. So Control could be 7 or 8x platinum.

janet_jackson_rhythm_nation_1814-SP-3920-1101418982.jpg

Certification - 6x platinum
Soundscan - 1,389,047
Sony BMG - 1,100,000

= 8,512,047

Some of that total is in the Soundscan era. No one knows how much this album truly shipped other than A&M. But the figure ties in nicely with the NY Daily News estimate of 8.5 million

cd-cover.jpg

Certification - 6x platinum
Soundscan - 7,025,727
Sony BMG - 860,000

= 7,885,727

janet. should obviously be 8x platinum, probably more.

Certification - 2x platinum
Soundscan - 2,439,001
Sony BMG - 1,480,000

= 3,919,001

Obviously should be 4x platinum. As it continues to be one of Janet's best sellers in her back catalog, it could be 5x platinum.

The-Velvet-Rope.jpg

Certification - 3x platinum
Soundscan - 3,237,266
Sony BMG - 420,000

Sony BMG - 100,000

AFY should be 3x platinum. It COULD possibly be 4x platinum.

Soundscan - ~180,000+ (double disc over 100 minutes, so it counts twice); 360,000+

Total estimated U.S. album sales = 36,410,876

Her RIAA certifications are obviously at least 40 million. She sold 4,743,000 albums through Sony BMG Music Club. As stated previously, Columbia House was comparable in size so you could tack on another 3 or 4 million albums. If you factor in other club house sales, reshipments, etc, I estimate her RIAA tally to be about 42 million max.

Janet's team really needs to re-certify her entire catalogue worldwide, they haven't been re-certified since a couple years after each release and it is obvious she has sold much more since they were last certified, she must be at at least 150 - 200 million records sold and not the 100 million she's been at for years

Wow..I am shocked. Her numbers are much lower than I'd have expected.

I can't believe her biggest album, RN only sold 9M...especially in the 90s.

9 million in the US is not bad at all, its more than Dangerous is certified for, released at a similar time and re-certified much later than Rhythm Nation (7 million in the US as of 2000) where as Rhythm Nation was last certified in 1992, and both albums have sold very well.

yeah but dangerous sold way more than rn did as whole, worldwide.

nice sales though.

Oh definitely, I personally think it should have done better in the US though, its a complete masterpiece!! I always thought Dangerous deserved to outsell Thriller.

Anyway compared to her contemporaries at the time though Rhythm Nation sold extremely well, Madonna's Like A Prayer is 4x Platinum, Whitney's I'm Your Baby Tonight is also 4x Platinum, only Mariah Carey's self titled album which is 9x Platinum is similar in sales.

I agree with you up to a point, don't forget the Dangerous era was literally cut short because of the first allegations. And only Black or White went to number #1 Janet had a flawless era with RN & Janet. For a while she was the "alternative to MJ" aka the "normal one"

I agree. I think if he had toured the states the sales would have went up. Oh, I often wonder how things would have been if 1993 didnt happen.
Also, I dont know if youre American or not but this time period in the states, New Jack Swing was kinda on its way out. He was late to the party. If he had released the album a year earlier it would have done much better hear (like Janets Rhythm Nation).

I agree. Its also not fair to compare anyones sells to Mike lol..
BTW.. Rhythm Nation is one of my favorite albums.

If you compare anyone to Michael they will fall short so it's not really fair to.. lol!!

Janet has proven a force to be reckon with on her own, she's a HUGE success in retrospect of reality..

Michael was NOT reality, he was in a league of his own.. It's only crippling to anyone to be compared!

This is from the Chartmaster-Analysis for Janet Jackson:

The gap in performance in streaming of Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson is so big that a low song from the latter is one of the biggest streamers from the former. Scream is close to 10 million plays, enough for the 6th spot among Janet Jackson’s list but barely Top 50 inside a similar Michael Jackson ranking.

People can say what they want about her being Michaels sister and how it helped her career.. truth to it? sure! but people bought her albums because they were good.. stack her sales up to any other Jackson aside from Mikes and see how far the name got them in a solo career.. Need I remind people she wasn't even part of the Jackson 5 or Jacksons group.. she was "just" the little sister. Did not have the notoriety all the other brothers had to launch a solo career.
