Q: What about the later music you put out?
A: A lot of critics also s–t all over “Whatzupwitu,” which I recorded [in 1993] withMichael Jackson. But 20 years later, Michael Jackson is gone, and not a lot of people have footage of them dancing around in the clouds with him [as in the video for “Whatzupwitu”]. That’s part of my history, now.
Q: How did you get him to be on that song?
A: I asked, and he did it! I knew Michael since he was 19. The whole Jackson family was really warm to me. I was just hanging out with Jermaine a couple of months ago.

Michael wasn’t “***** *****” when he was with me. He was a real person with his family and kids, but he could turn on the persona of Michael Jackson instantly.
I remember being three feet away from him on the video for “Remember the Time” [which starred Murphy]. When someone yelled “action” and he started dancing and doing all that s–t, it was like he plugged into a wall.

That video is a trip. And it does make me smile .

i really like whatzupwitu especially the line "let the children sing"

Oh god. i love this song. Especially when he just goofs around.

Whatzupwitu is only embarrassing in the fact that Michael completely steals the show.

Other than that, pretty fun song.

Nice words from Eddie Murphy. I don't think he's talked about Michael since he passed has he? Love Whatzupwitu. Michael's so adorable in it :D

Cringey cheesy song, but it's still fun and fantastic ha!

Eddie I got told off by my parents for ringing up The Box music channel to play/support it 300 times plus.. back in the day. This vid was SOo original and made my creativity FLOW. I got Michael's nick name from here...this input of this video, you are both silly and I love you both so much in it

I love this video too yes Michael did steal the show as always i like the part at the end too when Eddie cover Michael mouth that was so cute as if to say stop sing Michael. Eddie and Michael both had fun doing this video and that was nice to see. Eddie was a true friend to Michael he never that i know of say anything negative about Michael.

I sometimes forget about this song.
Forget Lost Children and Little Susie.
Whatzupwithu is definitely the worst Michael Jackson song ever. Fortunately, it's not really HIS song, though.
Eddie never topped his classic "Party All The Time" :D

But if you guys like it, great! :)

Whatzupwitu has a good beat and Eddie's singing is actually pretty good. The video I always thought was neat too.

Also, just me personally, when I first saw the video it seemed like Murphy was kinda flirting with Jackson. Maybe I'm reading into it a bit much but he was touching up on the guy quite a bit! I guess anybody would be excited to be in a Michael Jackson video.

I only copied MJ part here from Eddie's recent interview with The Guardian

You recently told Rolling Stone: “I can’t make a wack track because I know what wack is.” But most people panned your 1993 single with Michael Jackson, Whatzupwitu.

You know, I was dancing around in the clouds with Michael Jackson. However wack anyone thought Whatzupwitu was, there’s not a lot of people that have footage of themselves dancing around in the clouds with Michael Jackson. I do have that for ever.

And obviously you’d known Michael, and imitated him in your standup about a decade before collaborating.

Yeah, I knew Michael for years and years before that track came out. What’s interesting, when you watch that routine from Delirious when I’m doing Michael Jackson jokes, that was actually the first time anybody even did a joke about him. It’s not mean-spirited at all, it’s just all about how he was so sensitive. And then I sang. Michael loved Delirious, it was playful and fun.

How’d that compare to Saturday Night Live, where you imitated Stevie Wonder while stood right beside him?

Michael and Stevie were people that I knew, and they were part of my social circle. I was able to play around and poke fun – they would never get mad. If you look at it, and compare it to the stuff that people are doing now, it’s totally not mean-spirited. And going back to what I was saying, people are allowed to not like something. And maybe a lot of people did think Whatzupwitu was wack, and that’s what’s cool about music: you have a visceral response to it, and you either like it or you don’t, as soon as you hear it. The good thing about that is that if you come with a hot track, they’re gonna like it. So just because somebody didn’t like a track I put out, that never stopped me. I’ve always written, recorded and produced – I never stopped doing it. I stopped putting music out, but I didn’t stop making it. Then it got to now where if you listen to Whatzupwitu and then you listen to Oh Jah Jah, you can tell that I’ve been in the studio working at this.

I like Eddie's MJ parodies.

And this is the Stevie Wonder one.

And one other I loves was the James Brown parody.

every time i see this video it makes me smile despite how corny it is lol and Michael's voice is so beautiful

Such an funny and sweet video. Not very serious, but I guess that's the whole point. Just having a good time and laugh...

Yes! This! I always feel like everyone (both male and female) always sort of fell in love with Michael if that makes sense. He was just so loveable and charming. All. The. Time.

My same thoughts :D and honestly can't blame them! Michael's aura is... pure magic

...ugh this is so sad.. the best director ..ever

I can enjoy this video(Whatzupwitu)...it's easy to digest. It has a similar feel to Blue's Clues to me and I always thought Steve Burns was so fun doing stuff like these two are doing among the animation and such. I kept waiting for Mailbox to show up or Side Table Drawer...lol. Blue's Clues entered the scene about 3 years after this video in 1996.

Thanks for posting the Eddie interview and the video. :)

Oh, also, that James Brown segment from Delirious is hilarious. hahaha.
