Default Statement from the Estate of Michael Jackson

    Hello, #MJFam:

We want to share the below message from the Estate with you all. We know that the community is emotional and exhausted due to all of the attacks on Michael this year, but*the Estate*wanted to*let*you know that there will be more actions coming in the following weeks with regard to*Leaving Neverland*and to also take this opportunity to share with you*their*perspective on*the musical.

    Best,
    Alicia
    MJOnline
The Official Online Team of The*Michael Jackson*Estate™

    STATEMENT FROM THE ESTATE
Last week, John Branca, along with Estate attorneys, were invited to speak at Harvard University. They used the opportunity to raise issues about how Leaving Neverland violates every notion of fairness, while pointing out the gaping*lies and*holes in its narrative. They also spoke with members of the media, such as Billboard, who were present at some of the events [https://www.billboard.com/articles/n...ing-neverland]. And you can expect more news from the Estate in the coming weeks.

We also remain focused on long-term projects that we believe will enhance Michael’s legacy moving forward, including the Broadway musical. We can assure you that all those involved in this production, including the Tony Award-winning director,*Christopher Wheeldon, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, Lynn Nottage, are devoted MJ fans. That’s why they are committed to bringing this show to Broadway.

If we get this right – which we will – theater audiences will have an even deeper appreciation for Michael’s creative genius, just as they did when they watched This Is It nearly 10 years ago. In fact, we believe this will*be*as poignant an*experience, one that connects the audience to Michael in a way in which he is appreciated both as a person and as an artist.* The role for Lynn and Chris, among other things, is of course to entertain, but also to depict*the events of Michael’s life and his struggles, both internal and external, that molded him into the person, the artist and the creative genius that this musical celebrates. *Simply put, if we didn’t trust Lynn and Chris to do justice to Michael, we would not be working with them.

While we appreciate that, on an emotional level, fans want Lynn and Chris to join the public battle against Leaving Neverland, from an intellectual perspective we believe it is important to understand why Lynn and Chris, to protect the integrity of the musical,*should not*take a public position at this time one way or another about any issues in Michael’s life. They are biographers who at this stage have been assigned to dispassionately observe their subject’s life and craft their story. Their role is to*entertain as well to*understand how all of the events and unique personal challenges Michael faced throughout his life shaped him, and molded the character they ultimately present on stage.*The*story is still a work-in-progress, as they have stated.

As with the two Cirque du Soleil shows and with Spike Lee’s acclaimed documentaries, we are collaborators. We have significant input and say in the final*show. But we believe it is important to give all of our creators the freedom to draw upon Michael’s experiences, in this case, to create a well-rounded and in-depth stage character of Michael Jackson. To that end, we have spent a significant amount of time with them sharing our personal knowledge of Michael and our experiences with him as well as*introducing*them to others who were an integral part of Michael’s life, so they can fully understand the very complicated and talented artist and man that he was.

Michael was constantly judged throughout his life – as he continues to be in death --- by those who never bothered to look below the surface. Lynn and Chris will not do that. They are looking at Michael’s life with the goal of helping audiences understand the challenges and pain he faced away from the spotlight and how it shaped a man who shunned society’s norms to such an extent that 10 years after his passing he still commands the world’s attention.* We have asked Lynn and Chris not to give us a superficial Michael, but to delve into his humanity, his goodness and his faults along with the conflicts and difficulties he encountered at different stages of his life, so people can understand what fed the fire of this incredibly unique creative genius.* With the benefit of having read drafts of the book, being in the room for readings and being present at labs at which we see the musical coming to life, we see and feel Michael’s presence in a way that we do not think would have been possible with anyone*less talented*than Lynn and Chris.

A musical of the caliber that we are confident is now taking shape will not only pay tribute to and celebrate Michael Jackson’s genius but take audiences on an emotional journey that will surprise fans and non-fans alike as they witness his magical, complex world.* Since we all know it is not possible to judge something that you have not experienced yourself, we hope you will all have the opportunity to sit in the theater and experience this musical for yourselves and we look forward to your reactions once you have that opportunity.

Give us money to see our show made by two people who think he was a pedophile.

NO THANKS! I’ll stick with the work MJ gave us in his life!

Can’t believe the estate is doing this. Create a project which makes the gap between them and us, the fans, even bigger.

New music, HQ concerts, remastered short films sourced from the original reels is what we need. Don’t know what to say anymore.

    A Broadway musical. WTF.

I can't believe that the Estate has released 1 [poor quality] full concert since MJ's passing. We're soon passing the 10 year mark. Unbelievable.

Because the two people writing the show expressed doubts about Michael's innocence and now there's a lot of concern that said doubts will be put into the show. If that happens, it's going to make the fans look bad, the neutral parties continue to question (and perhaps lean towards the negative, because God knows the media will put out reviews of this that will push them to that point), and the haters will be cackling with glee.

Maybe I'm being over dramatic with the above, but it's possible. The most we can hope for at this point is that the show ends up not being as bad, or the Estate forces them to re-write it so the audience isn't left questioning/leaning towards guilty.

You guys are beyond dramatic. First off

    1. These two have never said they believe MJ was a pedophile. The UK interview was twisted around. If you read the more updated and recent NYT article, they remain neutral but mention they want to create something truly special that makes Michael proud. They mention they hope MJ is not guilty, and that they want to create something different and totally unique.

    2. I guarantee you this broadway will not portray Michael as some sexual deviant. It's going to be dedicated to his music and contribution to society (dance, fashion, music, songwriting, etc). Will there be hints of controversy? There very well might be. But guess what? MJ was a controversial figure, depicting a broadway musical dedicated to him with all rainbows and lollipops would be a disservice to who he was.

    3. The estate has final creative control, they would NEVER let a show of this caliber be about pedophilia and scandal. Like get real guys! It's a business for them, they want the glowing reviews, big crowds and money. That would never get that from a negative scandal driven production and they know it.

So yes, the two people in control may be staying neutral right now. This METOO movement is powerful and dangerous, and they won't be coming out with waving flags about how these two kids lied (even though that truth will continue to come out). I know how bad MJ fans want everyone involved in his projects to think he was some saint, but the reality is simply not that. I'd personally rather have this play be an award winning smash hit that gets people talking rather than a Disney edited version of sunshine and rainbows catered to MJ hardcore fans only. MJ was a controversial guy who was always walking the line of whats acceptable in society (gay/straight, girl/boy, innocent/guilty, theme parks, monkeys, surgeries, larger than life persona). It's the very reason we all love him so much. So I personally am going to give this thing a chance. I have a good feeling.

Post Re: Statement from the Estate of Michael Jackson

@travis3000, no one here is claiming MJ was some perpetually immaculate "saint". Jermaine Jackson even released Word to the Badd!! after Michael hired and occupied the time of the very same producers that were supposed to work on Jermaine's album.

What we have a problem w/ is the fact those two figures (Wheeldon & Nottage) publicly stated that they believe Leaving Neverland to be "very believable" even AFTER that movie was debunked in many angles; by the time they gave that interview, they were fully made aware of all the debunking.

And yes, Nottage literally said she believed the accusers to be truthful. I hate it when figures say something, and then attempt to make it sound like they meant something else instead of acknowledging what they said (and fully retracting and apologizing if they have a genuine change of heart and mind).

And this is precisely what Corey Feldman is now doing!

    Previously:

Wheeldon & Nottage do not seem that neutral to me at all! They are so transparent and many of us see right through them or we would not be demanding they be fired!

All we want is the musical to be written and directed by competent people who FULLY believe Jackson to be 100% innocent of grooming and child sexual molestation (imperfections of Michael may be portrayed but not anything having to do w/ grooming and child sexual abuse). Is that asking too much? If so, the whole project should be cancelled altogether.

And #MeToo be damned! I first supported that movement as I thought it was beautiful, thoughtful and important, but it's been hijacked by unscrupulous opportunists, the radical Left, and isn't it weird that throwing (false) accusations is okay, siding w/ (false) accusers is okay, being neutral is okay but siding w/ the accused and claiming their innocence is now becoming politically incorrect? We've got to stop that trend and reverse the tide NOW!

While I could understand reasons to have resentment towards the Estate.. If we spent more of that energy in helping Michael's legacy over putting into what upset us over how the Estate is not doing what we "would do" - we would do much more good.. at the rate we are going, we will find everyone to be an enemy.. That is counterintuitive.. I say make the suggestions and do what you can to help his legacy if you care to..

You put anyone in charge of the estate, there are going to be flaws..

Honestly I don't care at all about a Broadway musical (I wasn't even enthusiast about MJ ONE), most fans demand worldwide releases (I mean new albums, concerts etc.), not a show that only people who live in the US or have many money to travel there can attend.
