Default How would new MJ music sound in 2019/ the 2020s?

I was thinking about this last night.

Just another fun question which I'd love to have a discussion about. Ignoring the subject of MJ's age and the fact he wanted to pursue other ventures, what do you think he would sound like now? In terms of the kind of music he would be doing. I personally believe we'd be getting things similar to Invicible, BOTDF and HIStory, but massively 'evolved' with every new release. Imagine the vocal styles he'd go for, the beautiful instrumentals he would craft! The short films!

I think if he took breaks between new albums, as he did anyway, his music would sell very well- if Mike was given creative freedom, was able to work when he wanted, and his work was promoted properly.

Mike always adapted his style to 'invite' listeners of all ages, while also staying true to himself. This is the other reason I think he would sell, because adaptability= longevity.

There are a lot of "IFS" in those musings!

I think he'd stick with the formula that worked for him and would follow his roots....POP, R & B, etc. Romantic ballads, similar to Beautiful Girl, One More Chance, Fall Again, Break of Dawn, Whatever Happens would be forthcoming and I think he would continue to collaborate with young, up and coming artists, writers and producers. He wanted to work with Lady Ga Ga, for example.

The classical album that he dreamed of doing might become a reality and I can also envisage him working on movie soundtracks, as a way of tapping into that genre, once and for all. I would hope that his age wouldn't mean the end of the edgy, angry rock songs, with some raspy vocals.....but perhaps it would. Maybe he'd start to do the unplugged, acoustic versions of his songs that some of us dream about.

Ultimately, though, I don't think we would have seen too many more albums from Michael, had he lived. Considering that he left years between albums during his life time as it was, I think maybe we would have one more....two at the most, before he moved onto something else. I think he would have concentrated on his children's lives and where they were headed, as time moved on.

I always feel like Michael would have made a smash comeback single, something huge and up tempo that you couldn't ignore. Then imagine most of the album would have been more musical in terms of it's instrumentation, compared to Invincible (I think Michael wanted to get back to more melody hook driven tracks)
I imagine he would have released songs like You Rock My World, Break Of Dawn and Xscape style. Were they are brand new fresh sounding tracks but they still have that familiar Mike feel to it

I think Michael always adjusted well to the music scene, and not many artists that were prominent (20+) years can do that. Generally you just see them touring on their older material, and even if they do release a new album or single; people don't react to it or appreciate it like they do the older songs. Michael would most likely have stayed contemporary without disparaging what we have always known him for. I mean, Love Never Felt So Good was written in '83 but people gravitated towards it in 2014. So imagine if he created something new today, it would be stand out in the best way possible.

Since Mike tended to use whatever sounds or producers that were hot at the moment. I'd guess it would sound like what's on the radio now. Like Cardi B, Maroon 5, Pitbull, Migos, etc. Quavo from Migos is on Madonna's new album. Paul McCartney was on a song with Rihanna & Kanye West a little while back. Maybe a Latin pop sound like the song Janet Jackson had last year with Daddy Yankee or trap beats. There might be a track with DJ Khaled shouting "We da best music!" or "another one" several times on it.

I really hope his music wouldn´t become the music we hear today. Actually I don´t listen too much music that´s made today, because in my opinion most of that music is horrible.

Probably he would have been torn apart thinking about doing it exactly that way (in order to stay "relevant" in modern music biz) and doing something he truely likes. And in the end it would again have been a mix of both. As some newspaper over here put it when Michael died... "he was the best possible compromise between commerce and art".

Michael Jackson’s new music in 2019/the 2020s would have sounded like the current sound from the current producers.

If you look back at his career, whenever he released a new studio album, he would simply follow the current at the time sound.

Unlike what many of his fans like to think, in terms of the sound of his music (from ‘Off The Wall’ to ‘Invincible’) Michael Jackson was almost always a trend settler, not a trendsetter.

The main reason for that was that Michael Jackson’s philosophy was to create hits with great commercial success, and he knew that in order to achieve that he had to supply a sound that the audience was very familiar with at a given period.

‘Invincible’ is the most telling example, when he relied a lot to the sound of Rodney Jerkins’ music, a sound that at that period was the norm and also a sound that was already very successful by other artists that this producer was working with around those years.

Cool Re: How would new MJ music sound in 2019/ the 2020s?

Imagination is all we have. I don't think it would ever be.
I think he would have stepped back and like previous posters said invest the time in his family. Ideally he would have done a bloody groundbreaking one off collaboration with my favourite guy, don't even get me started..

And maybe some other artists he particularly liked. but aside from here and there, one off projects. not much in the way of music.i think music would still be there obviously . You can never take the art trait, want, or need out of an artist but it'd be sparse? Or unnamed? I'd not think he'd do apperances Especially electronic music or festivals.

I could one hundred percent see him on film family though with Prince Taj and Bigi.
When I watch that, ohh it's easy to get caught up and *see* him there too.
Knowledgeable Mr magoo in his reading glasses. Yeah I could see that as a say, monthly, maybe every three months treat.maybe would have directed film?

No snap chat. No Instagram . No twitter.. Well maybe twitter. But very little social media in my opinion.

Let me buy you an "I think"...

I'm not arguing against your trendsettler point, but I think it was even worse.
Sounding current and beyond might have been the approach and philosophy in his mind, but ultimately he was way behind trends with his last albums. There was absolutely nothing current about the HIStory album at the time. Apart from the songs with an otherworldly timeless feel (like Earth Song, TDCAU), the songs that did follow formulas (This Time Around, the Hiphop beat sections in the song HIStory etc) sounded years dated at release. The fresh exciting sound of the time (1994~1995) was Timbalands production style, which, by the time Michael finally adapted to it ("Heartbreaker" with Rodney), had been copied by the whole music industry a thousand times before. Invincible again overall sounded dated as hell on release.

And guys just sayingif he did do more music like he used to right , how would that have been promoted? Through a tweet?..you've got to be kidding me. Through a story on his Instagram going live? Nah. No way. the magic had to end.

    You don't think it's awkward/surreal /funny when mj tweets?
We were only allowed a limited contact with Michael Jackson.
    Fan letters.
    Fan clubs.
    Fanmania.
    Rare appearances.
Now all of this, the concept of it, is obsolete!
And what he said in interviews, about no one understands me... Or, to quote him,

"I sit in my room at home and sometimes cry. It’s so hard to make friends. Sometimes I walk around the neighborhood at night just hoping to find someone to talk to…but, I just end up coming home."

~"My fans truly are a part of me. We share something that most people never experience"

Being a mj fan was more than being a fan of someone's... Anyone's!..
The magic. The thrill of the magic. Someone spectacular. Someone resilient. Larger than life.. The hype. That was the whole point of it. And no, we couldn't relate So it doesn't make sense if he was now out there on the Internet being one of your Facebook (or equivalent) "friends " or "follows YOU".
I don't know how he'd have promoted his art without it being.. Not *Michaelmagical * if that make sense?

Sorry, time made it so. The electronic age made it so.Internetkilled the video star. I'm sorry...
Mind you, any more short films would have killed you tube!
I would loved to think, he'd have gone through that platform, and somehow retaliated with the current Internet situation.? and maybe pursued some kind of ground breaking something there... But then, you tube would have been too mediocre for him?..it goes around in circles to the point where nope I just can't see it.
