john bettis was the one who wrote the lyrics that ended up on the final version of 'human nature'. they were not about a child being bullied (though that was the initial inspiration that steve Porcaro had). i'd rather hear from him and how he reshaped it to fit Michael's experience.

Michael also added the crucial 'why-oh-why' refrain, that caused the song to soar to another level. that particular part was also famously sampled by r&b group s.w.v in the 90's. it was a team effort. Michael was involved in the creative process of all the songs in some way - even the ones he didn't write. he had those natural instincts since 'looking through the windows' with the Jackson 5 as a child.

the original 'human nature' demo sounded sombre and a little scary. Porcaro, and toto as a whole, were right to doubt it. it would not have been a hit in that form - especially without Michael's magic touch.

'human nature', despite being impactful and one of the highlights, was not the biggest hit off the 'thriller' album (it didn't even get a u.k release). that honour goes to Michael's self written songs; 'billie jean' and 'beat it'.

there's a tendency to reduce Michael's role to 'just a singer and dancer' - although there's nothing wrong with being that at all. however, he was a full well rounded artist.

this is a rock based media, and they're clearly biased.

I interpret the lyrics on the final version to be about a person experiencing freedom in the big city (probably new York, because it's known as the 'big apple') on their own for the first time. observing their surroundings, and finding wonder in the little things that most take for granted. it could relate to Michael's fame forcing him to live a sheltered lifestyle. we'll only know the truth when john bettis, who wrote the final lyrics, speaks about it.

Michael's social media accounts celebrated the release of the 'human nature' single 37 years ago yesterday they used the single cover where he has the famous yellow vest and white broach that song is definitely in my top 5 as the best ever the only ballad that I like in general.
