RIP Kenny Rogers. I love his song with Michael Jackson.

As for Michael doing a country song, other than his aforementioned song with Kenny, songs like Destiny & Don't Walk Away always gave me country vibes. Even Much Too Soon, that came out posthumously has a country sound to it imo.

For whatever this is worth, my understanding is that at one point, he threw around the idea of making the Smooth Criminal video Western themed instead of with gangsters. Not sure how true that is since the original song was Al Capone, but it's an interesting idea.

Michael had a very well-rounded and diverse musical palate, so I'd guess he had at least some interest in country. Like others have said, there are a couple songs in his catalog with country/folk influences (e.g., "Black or White," "Don't Walk Away," "Much Too Soon," "A Place with No Name").

I'm not a fan of country personally, but admittedly I'd like to hear what a full-blown Michael Jackson country song would sound like.

That's from The Jacksons' TV variety show.

Several of the siblings have said that their mother Katherine has always been a big C&W fan and that they used to sing country songs while they were living in Gary. Mike sang this song (For The Good Times) for his mother in 1984. Although he wasn't the first to release it, country singer Ray Price was the first to have a hit with the song. Elvis wasn't the original either like the person who made this video has it "Michael sings Elvis Presley". Al Green had a popular R&B version of the song too.

Jermaine was on one season of the competition TV show Gone Country, where singers from other genres have to write and perform country songs.

The Jacksons visited Nashville's Municipal Auditorium in August of 1981 and grabbed this photo opportunity with William Lee Golden of the Oak Ridge Boys immediately after serenading him with "Elvira". James Lowry (guitar Oak Ridge Boys and Rambos), William Lee Golden (Oak Ridge Boys), Michael Jackson, Jackie Jackson, Donna Jean (ORB office staff), Rusty Golden, Tito and Randy Jackson. I'm not denying the fact that he may have had that idea, however, the footage from Private Home Movies that is supposedly Michael coming up with ideas for the Western themed Smooth Criminal short film looks more like him rehearsing for the 1990 L.A Gear commercial.
The short film for Smooth Criminal was shot in February/March 1987 and the footage shown in PHM is apparently from 1988 and it looks like it was shot at Neverland (which couldn't have happened before 1988).

I think the fact that the idea that MJ originally had for SC was a western is true but as you say, the video is the LA Gear rehearsal. I think the editors just wanted to visualize it in some form. The year gives it away though.

The song Destiny is a country song, or very close to it.
