Default Specific Tours Recorded on Film/High Def

The Jackson 5 (1970-1974. Concerts and rehearsal fragments are known to exist. Although no specific information currently.)

    The Jackson's:
Destiny Tour (Oakland, snippets and performances have appeared on YouTube and a snippet included in Journey From Motown to Off The Wall.)

Victory Tour (Confirmed back in the day during a special that aired covering the performance in Chicago, it was revealed that more than 30 miles of film footage had been shot up to that point. It is unknown what has been filmed following this particular date, although Los Angeles is also believed to exist.)

    Michael Jackson:

BAD World Tour 1987 ("Kerry, hello. We started out in Tokyo with 1 beta cam and soon purchase a 35mm BL 4 and a 16mm camera. Eventually our crew grew to 5 and we shot miles of color neg at shows in Tokyo and Osaka. Moved on to Australia and more shows. I was his DP/director until we came back to the US to regroup for Europe. Several changes happened and I quit the show. A few of our original crew continued, but I departed. Miles of 35 neg, shows, interviews, moments with MJ, some great stuff. Have now idea where it is now. Rather certain entire UK shows were filmed. Later..bp")

BAD Tour 1988 ("My first real grading job was on the Michael Jackson Bad tour in 1988, directed by Patrick Kelly. I was an assistant telecine operator at Visions, located in Soho, London. As an assistant I laced the film, loaded the film cleaner and pressed REC on the 1” VTR.

The concert was shot on a mixture of 35mm and 16mm film, it seemed at times they were shooting film for fun! The crew filmed 2 nights out of the 5 Wembley stadium gigs, film was also fed from the earlier tour legs in Australia, Japan, and Europe. As an accompanying piece to the concert, an “on the road” documentary was also filmed at the same time. The concert was cut in a 4 machine 1” online edit suit, not offlined. This was before Avid of FCP offline so the alternative would have been a lowband umatic or ¾ edit. As soon as the film came in from the lab we would be transferring it, feeding the footage on to 2 hungry edit suites.

It is still the biggest music project I have ever been involved with in terms of volume of footage. We would load each negative film lab roll onto the Rank MK111 telecine machine then set the counter to a known sync point on the film. So LR 10 would be TC 10:00:00:00. The sync point would be the start mark on the film leader.

The single “Another part of me” was cut from some of my early telecine work. The music video was cut from footage shot in London and Paris, that shows you how tight Jackson’s performance was. As far as I know the complete concert and documentary has never been released. A disappointing waste as the film managed to capture Jackson at his peak. Jackson never came into Visions during the project but Frank Dileo, his cigar smoking manager, visited a couple of times.")

^^ Other shows that are believed to exist to some degree: Madison Square Garden, Minneapolis, Munich, Wurzburg, Roundhay Park, Milton Keynes, Hamburg, Werchter, Tokyo, Montpellier, Lausanne, Cork and Aintree Racecourse.

HIStory World Tour (Munich July 4th & 6th, Leipzig August 3rd. Currently their is no information regarding any other shows at this time.)

    30th Anniversary (September 7th & 10th 2001)

This Is It (7 unreleased Rehearsals: Dirty Diana, Stranger In Moscow, Heal The World, Dangerous, You Are Not Alone, We Are The World (Band/Vocalists) and Will You Be There.) Other songs are also rumoured to exist including: Don't Stop til you get Enough, Rock With You and You Rock My World. Not forgetting meetings, interaction with the band and crew etc.

If any of you have any additional information or some things that I may have missed that would be greatly appreciated and will be added into the first post. Thanks.

MSG 2001 wasn’t shot on film or in HD. What’s the source for this?

MSG 2001 was shot in high definition. Have you not seen the raw 1080i video file?

That broadcast was upscaled from Beta sp or U-matic source.

Yeah it’s just the original tape source broadcasted onto a HD channel - not uncommon in TV

I understand what you're saying, but from curiosity have you checked out the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary concert on Blu-Ray from 1992? It was filmed with early high Def cameras. A resolution of 1080i, certainly looks tape sourced but the reason for that is because it wasn't ready at the time for contemporary standards. This is why I think it's possible that Michael's 30th anniversary show was captured using similar cameras.

    9641-6-1080p

Additionally worth noting is the Sony HDCAM first Introduced in 1997, its also possible this is the "rare format" (referred to by the estate) Munich and Leipzig were captured with.

    PENTAX-Image

"HDCAM, is a high-definition video digital recording videocassette version of digital Betacam, using an 8-bit discrete cosine transform (DCT) compressed 3:1:1 recording, in 1080i-compatible down-sampled resolution of 1440×1080 (4:3 aspect ratio), and adding 24p and 23.976 progressive segmented frame (PsF) modes to later models. The HDCAM codec uses rectangular pixels and as such the recorded 1440×1080 content is upsampled to 1920×1080 (16:9 aspect ratio) upon playback. The recorded video bit rate is 144 Mbit/s. Audio is also similar, with four channels of AES3 20-bit, 48 kHz digital audio."

That screenshot alone proves the point, it’s way higher quality than MSG

Really? I re watched the lossless 1080i WOWOW Japanese broadcast and it has more detail in not only the hair but also the teeth, less artifacts too. Some angles are different quality, for example shots of the audience etc.

Man.. watching that BoW clip again.. I so wish we can see one of his shows in this quality one day.. I keep thinking of all the different songs.. Billie Jean etc

I also think Bad 25 Blu-Ray should've included the 1080p versions of the APOM performances used in the montage.

It looks incredible doesn't it, Tokyo had a warm place in Michael's heart and it shows... I think that's the city he performed at most out of them all? Do you think they recorded just BOW simply because of the Slash feature? Would be a shame if Dangerous was the only tour that couldn't be released in High Def... Now for your second point, that would have been INSANE! My personal favourite is Minneapolis, just imagine that performance from the front angle displayed on a 200" 4K screen.. I'd faint, haha..

I wish they re edited MITM moonwalker instead of using VHS Wembley at the end of bad25.
