The smooth sounds of Bossa Nova

Azymuth are about "crazy samba" lol they incorporate a lot more jazz into it, you're right but that's how i like my Brazilian fusions
f_smiley.gif
but they did a lot of vocal bossas as well back in the day.

and this one's a lot more soulful than anything else, but worth a listen:

Laurindo Almeida & The Modern Jazz Quartet - Samba de Una Nota

bloody sublime.

Here is a track from 1964 called I'll Remember April by Johnny "Guitar" Watson, who's playing piano here.

great thread.

Gabin - Sweet Sadness, from their first album Gabin (2002)

Gabi

that's two Italian bossa artists mentioned in this thread, lol. weird. (other being Nicola Conte).

the only time i've come across Gabin is because of Conte's remix on their Freedom album.

something else.

^wow. this is so freakin percussive :wild:
i like it more than the original version, but it's not on Gabin's Freedom album, i have only this one track:

actually i find such modern fusions of bossa nova, electro jazz and other styles much more interesting than traditional raw bossa nova music, and since such innovative fusions of different styles are being made mainly in europe now, its not so weird that we have 2 italian artists here :)

Ok...This is not bossa nova but is amazing for me!
Caetano Veloso, a very famous singer here in Brazil, singing "Bellie Jean"!!

lol, i was wrong, that remix is included on Freedom album, as you said, on the 2005 edition. while edition from 2004 which i own includes another track Africa instead. i didnt know that.

going back to the topic and to the roots of bossa:
here is Antonio Carlos Jobim again and his beautiful piece Insensatez, based on Chopin's prelude no 4:

since then this melancholic theme was incorporated into many pop songs, for example Black Eyed Peas Sexy, lol:

again not a strict bossa but it's interesting how it works in totally different styles.

that's beautiful, but so short. i've something similar by the prolific Zimbo Trio where they covered several classical classics in a compilation:

[1972]

Pavane [Fauré]

Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte [Ravel]

Preludio Nº 2 [Bach]

Lago Dos Cisnes (Theme From 'Swan Lake') [Tchaikovsky]

but i'll be on the lookout for more of these classical covers, again that Chopin piece is awesome.

dug into my Zimbo files (most of which i still haven't listened to) and just found this nice cover of our Mike:

Zimbo Trio - I'll Be There [1971]

Michael Jackson In Bossa Moments

this is part of a new campaign by Universal to celebrate Bossa Nova's "50th anniversary". churned out some sweet MJ covers:

Monique Kessous - Remember The Time

Deco Fiori - I Can't Help It

Marcela Mangabeira - Human Nature

Barbara Mendes - Billie Jean

That’s cool. I always enjoy listening to classical covers, never heard of that trio before, but they sound really good.

Also great idea to make such smooth bossa-flavored MJ covers with warm sensuous vocals.
I like especially smooth-bossa-jazzy interpretation of Billie Jean.
and instrumental version of I'll Be There. great stuff.

Basia ~ Baby You're Mine

Pat Thomas ~ Desafinado

Astrud Gilberto ~ So Nice

some nice songs from the newest Nicola Conte's album Rituals:

Karma Flower

I See All Shades Of You

Black Is The Graceful Veil

Caravan (cover of the song which was written by Duke Ellington/Juan Tizol)

beautiful stuff, cheers for the notice i'll be copping this one for sure. Conte's a great musician with such a cool collection of influences in his bag.

i love the whole album, it's really good. just bought it a couple days ago and thought you'd be interested since i noticed that in the UK it comes out 2 months later :)

My God! Only now I saw this topic: Brazilian music. Our music is very rich. Someone here has heard of Vinicius de Moraes?

Songs Berimbau and Canto de Ossanha - Vinícius de Moraes, Toquinho and Miúcha:

Elis Regina was another great Brazilian singer. Your voice is wonderful. She is the mother of singer Maria Rita.
