Up to a million people are set to descend on the city - as fans learnt at 6pm last night whether they won tickets for the event.

And a LOT of the people travelling to LA are British.

British Airways today said there has been a "huge influx" of reservations in the last few days by people from the UK trying to get to LA.

Farewell ... Michael Jackson
All flights are expected to be sold out at the end of the day.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ.com - which was first to break the news of *****'s death - declared, "The British are coming" as airlines last night said London to LA flights were jammed.

American Airlines said: "We're fully booked. You can't get a ticket on that route now for love nor money.

"People are flying to neighbouring cities and driving or taking connecting flights."

Over 1.6million fans who registered for the memorial service will find out tonight if they have won tickets.

Fans had to register for free at the Staples Center Web site yesterday for the random drawing of only 8,750 names.

Each person selected will receive two tickets would have been notified by 6pm yesterday evening.

The tickets will admit 11,000 people to the Staples Center plus 6,500 in the Nokia Theater overflow section next door.

Jackson family spokesman Ken Sunshine said in a statement that AEG will "scrub" the entries to eliminate duplicates and any suspected of being made by automated systems.

Winners will receive a unique code and instructions on how to pick up their tickets tomorrow at an off-site distribution center. When they pick up their tickets, a wristband will be placed on their wrists.

Fans must have both the ticket and the wristband to enter Staples Center on Tuesday. Wristbands that have been ripped, taped or tampered with will be voided.

Mr Sunshine said those steps are being taken to prevent ticket-scalping.

Set to perform ... Diana Ross
Police and city officials in Los Angeles warned anyone without a ticket to stay away from the Staples Center.

They fear as many as 700,000 people may try to reach the arena, and authorities were urging fans without tickets to watch on TV instead.

A host of channels will be broadcasting the four-hour memorial tribute. They include the BBC's 24-hour news channel as well as rivals Sky News and CNN.

Private

The Sky Arts and E! Entertainment channels will also air the event, which starts at 6pm UK time.

The global TV audience is expected to top ONE BILLION.

The major US networks, including NBC and ABC, are also planning to screen the whole event live.

Broadcasters across the world have been given access to a pooled feed from the Staples Center to allow as many fans as possible to watch the proceedings.

*****'s enduring popularity in Britain was made clear last night when the official pop charts revealed he has an incredible 13 singles in the Top 40 - and five of the Top Ten albums.

The 50-year-old King of Pop, whose early hits with the Jackson Five included I'll Be There, will be laid to rest at Hollywood celebrity cemetery Forest Lawn.

The private family service was due to start at 8am Los Angeles time - 4pm in the UK.

Two hours later a galaxy of stars from across the generations will gather to sing his best-loved songs.

Justin Timberlake, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Usher are among those who have been approached to perform at the biggest memorial gig of all time, The Sun can reveal.

The memorial show will end with VIP friends and family joining hands and singing his 1992 hit Heal The World. A source told The Sun: "We want to celebrate Michael's life and make him proud.

"And the best way to do that is to get artists who he loved and respected to perform his songs.

"There will around ten performers singing his best hits.

Secret

"The artists will cover all generations and will all be performers Michael loved.

"They are all people Michael has talked about in recent months and years and will give an excellent example of where his musical tastes were when he died.

"There will be one or two surprises. Man In The Mirror is a big moment and the show will end with the singers all joining forces to perform Heal The World, which will be the emotive grand finale.

"As Michael himself said before, it will be the greatest show on Earth." The exact line-up of performers is still being worked out, and organisers are keeping the line-up a secret until the show.

They are also considering replacing the celebrities' normal red carpet arrival with a BLACK carpet as a mark of respect.

Supremes legend Diana Ross, 65, is set to read the eulogy, after *****'s will named her as his choice of guardian for his three children in the event his 79-year-old mother Katherine is unable to care for them.

Stevie Wonder ... set to join stars in Heal The World finale
The source revealed: "The details are still being confirmed and there is lots of bickering about exactly what should happen. But the line-up is close to being sealed and it's very exciting. It's going to be a huge, huge show, one of the biggest the world has ever seen. Michael would be proud."

*****'s planned 50-night run of concerts at London's O2 arena this summer was due to be based around the environment and saving the planet - so his family now want his memorial gig to reflect that.

The source revealed: "The family want the theme of his London shows to come through in the concert.

"For that reason Heal The World will be the theme of the day. It's the message and legacy Michael would have wanted to leave."
