Person of the Year 2009

Michael Jackson - Person of the Year 2009 - TIME

Michael Jackson kept his most stunning performance for the very end. Always able to command an audience, he knew how to bring whole arenas to fits of exultation with his moves and then silence them to the point of tears with his poetry. He was brilliant, excessive, maudlin, tacky and possibly criminal, but you could never ignore him. So it was fitting that in death, he momentarily silenced the largest arena humanity has ever known, the Internet.

News of this middle-aged man's sudden passing nearly broke the Web. Google's news section malfunctioned under the weight of "Michael Jackson" searches. The volume of Jackson-related tweets reached 5,000 per minute the day he died; Twitter was so overwhelmed that some users couldn't get into their accounts. Wikipedia buckled temporarily after hundreds of edits were made to Jackson's page. Across the Internet, more than 24,000 Jackson collectibles were offered for auction or sale. Jackson was crowned the King of Pop back before new media helped crack the monolith of radio pop into innumerable subgenres, from hip-hop and house to praise rock and adult contemporary. But the old-media monarch showed, one last time, that he still reigned: the world stopped for him for a few hours on June 25.

Michael Jackson's death 'most talked about event of 2009' - Telegraph
The King of Pop, who died in June, was preparing to get back on stage for the first time in more than ten years with a series of concerts at London's O2 Arena.

But as rehearsals reached their final stages, he was found dead at his home in Los Angeles.

The father-of-three's death led to an outpouring of grief from his fans, with a reported one billion people across the world watching his televised memorial service.

Second place in the poll, by mobile phone recycling company Home Page — Phone Piggy Bank was the Swine Flu outbreak, followed by the ongoing recession.

''Michael Jackson was a huge star and loved by people of all ages," a spokesman for Home Page — Phone Piggy Bank said.

''When he died, it was a massive shock, especially as he was due to perform his live shows just weeks later.

''Everyone was waiting for his big comeback, but instead we were watching his memorial service.

''It was a tragic story and one that many people will remember when they think back to 2009.''

Fourth place in the poll of 3,300 Britons was Jade Goody dying from cervical cancer at the age of just 27 on Mother's Day.

After being told the diagnosis live on the Indian version of Big Brother, the reality star filmed her battle with the disease and her wedding to Jack Tweed before her death in March.

Barack Obama moving into the White House to start his job as President of the USA was voted in at number five followed by the MP expenses scandal which has rumbled on throughout 2009.

During the second half of the year, X-Factor dominated most conversations and came seventh in the poll while Katie Price and Peter Andre's very public and bitter split was at eight.

The pair, who met on reality show I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here in 2004 had a fairytale wedding in 2005, just months after she gave birth to their first son Junior.

But since announcing their split in May, Katie has been on a downward spiral, losing fans and public support, while Peter's career has gone from strength to strength with his comeback album going to the top of the charts.

The continuing debate about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was voted in at number nine while X-Factor's controversial double act Jedward completed the top ten.

Michael Jackson owned 2009 but will 2010 be the same?

As 2009 winds to a close, New Year's Eve is always the time for reflection on the year that has past.

2009, of course, cannot be remembered without thinking about Michael Jackson.

Sadly, the world lost the King of Pop this year in what marked a tragic demise for arguably the world's greatest entertainer. But even in death, Michael Jackson illustrated the star power that most can only dream of in life. From topping the charts, selling out tribute concerts, and even climbing to the top of the box office heap, Michael Jackson owned 2009.

Today, Fox News conducted a public poll that places news of Michael Jackson's sudden death at the top of 2009's biggest entertainment stories.

For Michael Jackson, a life cut short, 2009 may have only marked the beginning of a new era for Michael Jackson's success and his musical legacy.

While the likes of Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga will go on to record new albums and new stars will be born for future generations, Michael Jackson could very well remain on the charts while remaining lodged in the hearts of millions of fans who will never forget the King of Pop and continue to share his music with younger fans for decades to come.

Yes, 2009 was the year of Michael Jackson. And 2010 may not prove much different.

The Associated Press offers evidence of such this week with the news that Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video will find a home among the nation's treasures in the world's largest archive of media recordings that have defined pop culture for generations.

The 1983 music video was selected among 25 films to be preserved in the 2009 National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
