About a month ago completely out of the blue “heaven can wait” came to the fore front thanks to social media. This resulted into massive streaming gains for the song. It went from 10+ million streams to 13+ million streams in a few weeks on spotify. The same trend was noticeable on other platforms like apple.
The same thing happened last year with They don’t care about us due to the George Floyd protests, though I can’t measure how big the impact was on streams.
I did not think this was possible but it seems now that it could happen again and I sincerely hope it will. Question to you people, what song do you expect to be the next big thing in MJ’s catalogue.

Personally with all the climate change talk I still expect a resurgence of earth song sooner or later. A song I really would love to gain momentum is “ who is it”.

What about yours?

I would imagine maybe a song from Thriller, but which one I’m not sure. I thought The Lady in My Life would have a moment, but not her. PYT seems to consistently chart in the Apple Pop Charts. would also LOVE to see Who is It since it’s one of my favorites. I would really love more from Dangerous, HIStory or Invincible so they get more traction.

Love shout what we should do is pick a song and let's champion it with streaming use you tube etc. What do you all think?

Who has made these songs move up so much is there an actual group to join to do this?

I always think the public sleep on Remember The Time, not only the song but the short film.

The short film is phenomenal and is a better representation/history lesson on what Egypt would have looked like

Michael loved black culture, perhaps he wasn't given enough credit, due to subtle ways in which he incorporated his culture into his art

"For all time" just popped up on my playlist, this song really is a perfect fit for a romantic dance movie. The two romantic leads performing a routine hand in hand. Ryan Gosling in the lead to get the girls screaming and Zendaya as his partner she is an MJ fan after all. But there is an age gap isn't there? Ideally this film then becomes a box office success and the song soars. Just thinking out loud lol

Apparently Kate Bush scored a nr 1 hit again on online charts after the usage of her song “running up that hill” in teen serie “ stranger things”.
it gets streamed millions of time a day on spotify. In comparison heaven can wait gets about 300 000 streams a day. So the massive streaming gains for HCW I talked about in my first post are relative and actually quite small.

Anyway this shows the impact of that a beloved tv show or film can have on someone’s music. Over the years I was always puzzled why MJ’s music almost never gets used for these kind of things. It is basically the best possible promotion you can have. Does the Estate not allow it? Does it cost too much to use a song? Perhaps God forbid nobody wants to burn their fingers on using an MJ song post LN?

Heaven can wait is only a small bump in terms of streaming gains now that we can compare it to Kate Bush’ song. After checking some daily spotify charts, HCW never trended either, it never reached the daily top 100 songs. So all in all the success is only relative.

Overall MJ is nr 104 in most streamed artists of the week, up eleven places from the week before. This is purely on the strength of his old hits as there hasn’t been any promotion for MJ’s brand for years now ( quite the contrary in fact) It’s going to be very interesting to see how luch he will gain with T40 in the coming weeks.

For what it’s worth the likes of Queen and Elton John are a lot higher, are they still harvesting because of their successful biopics a couple of years back?

Also Eminem and Linkin Park are a lot higher, I was totally not aware these 2 acts were still that popular. Are they still recording or something?

While HCW’s success is relative compared to Kate Bush’s songs hitting #1 it’s important to consider context. Stranger Things is an INSANELY popular tv show. It’s been gone for 3 years, I believe, and so it’s return is a huge deal. It’s definitely not (just) a teen show. Literally everyone I know watches it. That is a massive platform. Interestingly, I think for Season 2 they used Thriller in their trailer, but did not include it on their soundtrack (I could be wrong about that) so I imagine there may have been a bump then.

Meanwhile, HCW blew up out of absolutely no where. Literally just promotion on Tik Tok. Considering it’s not one of his well known songs and there was zero effort made on the part of the estate to make that happen, and it just happened organically, that is freaking amazing! It really speaks to the strength of his music that this can happen at all. But keep in mind TikTok is largely young people, where ST appeals to all age demographics and is obviously much more far reaching.

For what it’s worth, MJ has been in the top 100 artists on Billboard since I started regularly checking it this spring. Right now I think he’s in the 80s, but I believe he ended 2021 in the 40s. That is insane for an artist who not only has been gone for such a long time and with no promotion, but who has also been actively discredited and disparaged relentlessly by the media in very recent years. When you consider ALL he is up against, it’s remarkable that he’s still so popular!

From what I understand the estate is hard to work with for licensing and whatnot. I am sure they are getting in the way of themselves. I doubt that people aren’t using Michael’s songs because of LN, though if that’s the case, I doubt it will last. As for the other acts you mentioned, I do think the Queen and Elton John biopics made a massive impact. Also, Eminem is still pretty massive from what I can tell, but he also performed at the Super Bowl this year which has always, historically, bumped sales/charts for any artist. I am at a loss about Linkin Park lol

Anyway, that’s all of my nauseating silver lining for you 😊

Linkin Park probably won't record ever again. Lead singer Chester Bennington took his life in 2017

I know I’m going off topic now but time really is running out. The general consensus is that Michael did something wrong with children, I keep hearing it everywhere when for some reason his name drops on the radio or tv. Just last week I read a newspaper article about fallen stars etc and the writer clearly stated that “the pendulum is clearly swinging in the guilty direction”. Things like this hurt, it are little seeds that planted into the readers brains until it becomes the only truth.
T40 will be a huge deal, if it doesn’t come close to T25‘s success alarm bells should start ringing. Maybe they better concentrate on clearing MJ’s name i stead of music because in the long run the pedophile stamp will kill every opportunity at a celebration.

I will give another example. The biggest radiostation in Belgium regularly holds celebratory artists weekends. Last weekend they celebrated Lady Gaga. So a lot of attention goes towards her music and life. I can’t remember the last time they did this for MJ. They did it for Abba, Queen, Elton John, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, Madonna, Prince the past year. There are sometimes angry callers bemoaning the fact that MJ gets airplay. I’m sure it has impact on the radio’s decision making. His airplay dropped, I don’t have statistics to back this up but I notice a downwards trend.

There really needs to be a big u turn. I don’t know what’s holding back the Taj documentary but really time is running out.

I’m very sorry for this negative post but it continues to bug me and this forum is an outlet for me.

I worry about this stuff, too. I don't think we're out of the woods yet.

Imagine if Threatened is on the soundtrack for Stranger Things, it could really blow up and enter the charts worldwide.

The show is currently set in 1986, if they go by chronology they can't use any song that isn't from Off The Wall or Thriller.

Maybe if someday Stranger Things in set in 1997, they can use Ghosts or Is It Scary.

Looks like i’m missing out with stranger things. Maybe I have to subscribe to netflix for a month
