So I stumbled upon a video that says an audio engineer who has worked with Janet Jackson and Rodney Jerkins is also working with Rodney on a documentary with never before seen footage of Michael

Many speculate that it's for Invincible, I do remember that last year Rodney teased something with Invincible so he could've been referring to the documentary, but why didn't it come out on the 20th anniversary of the album? It can't come out this year because of Thriller 40, so is it coming out on the 25th anniversary? It would be ironic that Invincible is getting a celebration and not Dangerous and HIStory which are more known albums.

It is not ironic that 'Invincible' is getting a celebration and not 'Dangerous' and 'HIStory' which are more known albums.

Apparently their move suggests that they want the 'Invincible' album (which is a less known and a less successful album) to get more exposure and recognition via a potential documentary.

Besides, comparatively speaking, the most footage (of all his studio albums) comes from that specific album mainly because newer technology helped them to document in video almost everything that they wanted to.

For instance, Rodney Jerkins some years ago also spoke about having in his personal video cameras many hours of stored footage from those sessions which wait for a proper release.

Also, the 'Invincible' album due to having so many different producers and songwriters involved in its making can give a broader spectrum of accounts and stories (for a documentary) about those sessions.

It's ironic in the sense that no one would see it coming. The Estate doesn't acknowledge albums that isn't Bad or Thriller so them pulling out a documentary on MJ's lesser known album would be quite the surprise, especially when they didn't even say anything about Invincible's 20th anniversary.

I wish it would also come with an album with new demos, after Bad and maybe Dangerous Invincible is the album with the most number of outtakes and it would be a waste to never release them. I can only dream that the album would come with The Gloved One, Monster and Rise Above It All...

It’s possible that Rodney’s working on a career retrospective/documentary that just so happens to include footage of Michael. Like AChanceToDance said, I can’t imagine the Estate would give Dangerous and HIStory passing glances but devote an entire piece to Invincible.

I can get behind this, having a documentary that focuses on his career similar to Janet Jackson's documentary would be interesting. A lot of his recent documentaries either focuses on his troubled life or on the allegations so it would be a nice change if they focused on something more positive and not as often talked about, not to mention that it could increase his stream numbers the same way Janet's documentary did.

Edit: I went back and saw that you meant Rodney doing a documentary on his own career, but it's still something the Estate should consider doing as well.

I like Invincible. I just wish they had separated the YRMW Intro from the song. Its really annoying.
My only gripe with Invincible is the Teddy Riley tracks, they feel like fillers and they would've been better off if they were replaced with other tracks, putting Escape and A Place With No Name would've improved the album greatly IMO.

There is life in Invincible, the most streamed tracks of the album bar the 2 radio hits YRMW and Butterflies are Heaven can wait, Unbreakable and Break of Dawn. These songs are "successful" because unbreakable was also on the album "scream" it gained a lot of streams that way and the same for break of dawn which was on "number ones". Now TikTok popularized HCW so it means the album still has potential.

Break of Dawn is similar and better sounding IMO. Only reason Heaven Can Wait is charting is because of TikTok, before that it was a bit of an unheard song.
I always thought Heaven Can Wait was a top 5 song off that album. I think part of the problem is the arrangement of order the songs have on that album. I guess this is where somebody like Quincy Jones was missed.

I’ve always felt “Heaven Can Wait” was one of the worst songs in MJ’s discography, especially in terms of vocals. It’s one of the few head scratching moments when I can’t help but wonder, “He said no to all these songs but he said yes to THIS?”

Other than that, I like the Riley tunes. “2000 Watts” is charmingly weird, “Don’t Walk Away” is stunning (and massively underrated), and “Whatever Happens” is the closest thing to a masterpiece on Invincible.

The screaming of vocals on Heaven Can Wait I never really cared for. But I love the R&B feel to that song. 2000 Watts, now that's filler.

The HCW end vocals aren't great but the subject and melody are great, so is the first 3/4 of the song, its far superior to 2000 Watts, there is nothing "charming" about it lol

This album continues to divide, everybody seems to have different favorites lol
I personally don’t give a “ peep” for 2000 watts. Though I really want to hear the extended version, it supposedly ran 2 minutes longer with an Instrumental outro. I do like the beat. The vocals though, strong dislike there.
I also don’t care for whatever happens, again mostly because of the vocals and the Santana contribution felt like a retreat to the succes he had with “smooth”and “maria maria”.
Then we have “threatened” which is just another thriller but not half as exciting.
I mean 20 years on and It still hasn’t grown on me one bit. Heartbreaker though, that is my jam! I also generally like the real urban r&b sounding songs.
Just like with HIStory, trim about 5 or 6 songs and I got myself a stellar album left.

Weren't a lot of the vocals for this album done over the phone? Or at least I thought I read that. That just doesn't seem right and maybe explains some of it.

Not only doesn't 2000 Watts lyrics make any sense but the song always felt more like Teddy's song instead of Michael's since Teddy sings more than Michael himself, to me it can easily be removed from the album.

Don't Walk Away sounds cheesy IMO, I would rather have A Place With No Name in its place. Whatever Happens isn't bad but then again, another song could've taken the spot.

The highlights of the album comes from the Dr.Freeze and Rodney Jerkins songs, even their outtakes sound better than a lot of the songs Michael released in his life and if I could choose the album would have no other producers but these 2.

Songs like Butterflies, Heaven Can Wait, & Break Of Dawn were like the neo-soul sound that was popular on R&B radio at the time. Neo-soul didn't really crossover much to Top 40 pop radio, maybe Erykah Badu & D'Angelo did a little. Floetry, who wrote Butterflies, was one of the neo-soul acts. Neo-soul tended to be mid tempo or slow ballads. Sort of like Sade or Anita Baker mixed with a hip hop vibe. Not a lot of uptempo dance songs. Neo-soul usually appealed more to middle-aged R&B listeners who weren't as interested in Usher, Brandy, & Destiny's Child.
