"Michael", a biopic about Michael Jackson, is officially happening.

That's not how I see it, personally. To me, the biopic is a great opportunity to get the general public's interest in Michael peeked to the point that other companies will see a positive reason to invest further in him. I see the biopic as the beginning in some sense. After the biopic I would love to see more documentaries about specific times in his life, theatrical releases of concerts, more music released, more positive books, memorabilia everywhere, etc.

Basically, I want Michael to have what The Beatles have. Just all around, general acceptance of him as the legendary artist he is.
I hope you are right, that would be amazing! And as you said MJ deserves it. Thanks for helping me see things in a more positive way :)

No one deserves it more!! The biggest barrier is the mainstream media and general public questioning him. If we can bypass that, the world is open!! anything can happen :)

Thanks for helping me see things in a more positive way :)
Always :)

While I'm not really invested in this whole thing, I do have to agree. Public perception of Michael has been extremely unfair at times, and because of that, anything that humanizes him and actively makes the public sympathize with and respect him is a positive to me. Depending on certain factors I might give this project a chance; I just tend to be a bit hesitant every time there's a hype about something, since there's always a chance it'll be a letdown for at least a section of the public. Personally, at this point, I'm just gonna wait until it releases and see from there.

That's probably never going to happen, even if the accusations had never existed, because The Beatles are considered a rock act and Mike is not. The mainstream journalists who write about music are generally focused on rock music where Mike is considered more like a Sammy Davis Jr style old fashioned vaudeville entertainer who sings and dances. Although the term didn't exist until around the NSYNC & Backstreet Boys era, the Jackson 5 is now considered a "boy band" and so by the rock press means that Mike's origins is a teenybopper idol for Tiger Beat readers. R&B in general has never been given the same importance as rock music (or just plain blues music) by the mainstream music magazines like Rolling Stone & Spin. Jimi Hendrix is considered rock and not R&B, plus he plays guitar, which is more important to rock writers than someone who dances.

R&B in itself has never crossed over like hip hop later did. Today hip hop is automatically "pop music", but with R&B a small percentage acts got some crossover to Top 40 radio. Most of it was ignored by mainstream radio and media and was only on R&B radio stations that had a primarily Black audience. R&B is less documented than rock music too. There's also the case that Mike is the wrong race/ethnicity (in the USA). It's like Elvis Presley is given more importance than Little Richard & Chuck Berry. Elvis sold way more than them too. Elvis also has over 30 movies he acted in that are shown on TV all the time, so he can get new audiences in a way that the other early rock acts can't.

they wouldn't continue to be made.
that don't mean they are good. Bad Bunny was the #1 Spotify artist in 2022. Does that mean he is any good? nope. he was indeed the most listened artist and all, but his music is straight crap.

That's your opinion and not the people who listen to him. A lot of people think Michael Jackson's music is no good either and that's their opinion. I recall that Rolling Stone's readers in the late 1980s voted Bad the "worst album" and the "worst comeback" of the year. I probably still have the issue somewhere. The point is the same, Bad Bunny (like biopics) make money. It's called "show business", the "business" is more important than the "show". 😅 Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold more than any other entertainment item in history including Thriller. So that means video games sell, so makes money.

I hope the community understands that this film does not target the MJ fanbase (us) but the mass market to reach new target audiences. And it will NOT be a documentary solely consisting of facts. It is a movie about Michael for a wide audience, and thats it. And it will be positive for sure. The question is in what way they will deliver the negative-looking phases of MJ's life..
If it's a film just for the mass market then objectively they would just never touch the "negative looking phases". They're not gonna end a movie about the greatest artist of all time winning his court case, going to Ireland, and being put to death by an idiot doctor. At least I hope not.

And it's not gonna be an "Invincible is underrated" fluffpiece either. Maybe they'll dwell solely on MJ's philanthropy, all the good things he did none of us ever saw. That's the number 1 way to accrue all the sympathy and Fans, showing just how great and unparalleled a humanitarian he was.

Well it will be a box office success it seems inevitable and with success comes money and then all the negativity will just blow away because people think there is money to be made with MJ so the controversies are not important any longer.

I hope it will contain references to Bohemian Rhapsody. That film referenced Michael Jackson the same could happen with someone mentioning that MJ is in the recording studio with Freddie (perhaps mention the llama, whether it or is a true story or not doesn’t matter). This will in turn get people talking about the recordings they did together which will lead to releases or reworks of those songs.
I mean it is an MJ biopic, the film should be extravagant and over the top. We cannot have a simple dry biopic. Stuff that should be included is Neverland in all its glory, fans screaming while Michael gets on top of his car (this actually happened lol). Show that HIStory statue floating, show Michael alongside the military in his flashy costumes. Make it crazy. Show the young people of today how big of a mania he caused.

🙌🙌🙌 ALL OF THIS!!!

I need magic! I need otherworldly extravagance! I need to be transported! This to me is what the Whitney movie was missing, but was Elvis did right. But I want it 10x more insane for Michael! 😍

Do you guys think MJ will ever have another hit song?
Interest in his music flared up after his death and got some unreleased stuff in the charts, maybe a biopic can also have that effect.. do you think it will? Could MJ ever have another hit without a vehicle like a movie?

You mean aside from Love Never Felt So Good, Chicago, Don't Matter to Me, or Heaven Can Wait?

I still have a feeling Fabio 'jackson' will play MJ, or a part of it....
Its just a guess, I dont say I like it to be or want it to be.!

I hope you're correct!! Not disagreeing at all BTW, quite the opposite. I'm just always a bit anxious in the back of my mind.

Haha, Michael himself was already flashiness embodied! A dry biopic would just alienate fans I think, both old and new. Flashiness was 100% part of his appeal - the sequined glove, golden clothes, bombastic performances, expensive short films... That's just who Michael was. I absolutely need it in a biopic about him! So, hard agree there too.

If Mike was alive and actually released a new record, I doubt he'd have a hit single with it, except maybe on the Adult R&B format. They play new songs by veteran artists over a certain age. Top 40 is for young rappers & singers. Paul McCartney got a Top 10 hit by being on a song with Rihanna & Kanye West. That's the 1st time Paul had a Top 10 (in the USA) on the Hot 100 since the mid-1980s. That's probably the only way Mike could get a hit today, by doing a feature with a currently hot act. Otherwise, Top 40 radio is very unlikely to play someone who first came around during their listeners grandparents or even great-grandparents era. I Want You Back came out in 1969 and Mike would be 64 today. That's almost retirement age. His old songs might become a hit by being on a popular TV show or a viral TikTok video. That happened kinda recently to Fleetwood Mac & Kate Bush.

I hate to say it, but he's right. Both of MJs latest #10s had guest features/were good features too.

Guess it's time for the Duets album.

Michael can achieve a hit in two ways.

First way would be to get a younger & contemporary artist as a feature on a MJ song. Examples would be Justin Timberlake on Love Never Felt So Good or Drake on Don't Matter To Me.

Second way would be if a Michael song is featured on a popular TV show or movie, such as Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill that blew up after being on Stranger Things. It is unlikely that a popular TV show or movie will want a Michael song on their soundtrack, thanks to Leaving Neverland.

A film about the trial/court would be awful. MJ is much more than those fake allegations and it's about time focus was put on him as a talent, and as a person. The film will do both.
I wouldn't mind one. If done right and with the existing facts it could sway a lot of people. People are more likely to watch a film than plow through countless of articles regarding the subject.

If the biopic is a big success than someone may actually bankroll a good documentary to prove his innocence and hop on that bank train.

Then we'll get our soundtrack.

There's always Sony made films and tv anyway. They can put it in their videogames even lol. Miles Morales can have some MJ on his playlist.

I don't entirely disagree, but I really hope the biopic won't be that (which I don't think it will, but hey, you never know).

I would say 'Love Never Felt So Good' and 'Chicago' were hits in the slipstream of his passing, 'Don't Matter To Me' too but even more so because of Drake and I don't know about 'Heaven Can wait'; was that a hit..?
